RP: 4th Fleet (NSN) [Mission 4.1] In Before the Close

Alexandra relieved those prisoners to Bernhard, the medic from Phaedra's squad. She did not really cared right now, though she kept in mind to make sure that those two nekoes were captured by her and Henry.

When everyone started running she followed them, she knew that with her boosters on left side busted, she would have trouble moving aroung. She still had push/pull plates luckily, so she could use those to move if needed.

_____________
_____________

Lisa kept quiet. Constant chatter was not her thing all the time. Sometimes she enjoyes some calm atmosphere, especially when she was on enemy base. She was last in the squad, lettin three of her drones make a triangle shield and follow the unit in behind. If someone would ambush them from behind, the shield would cover most of the fire.

While others chattered, she was on her mindware scanning for enemy chatter, or maybe something withing their systems that would seem out of ordinary.

Cedric didn't give Black any mercy, "I wasn't asking if you were going to be crying yourself to sleep tonight, Marine. I just wanted to make sure you didn't think anything was gonna' fall off that shouldn't." He was glaring underneath his metal face-plate, punctuating his statement with a cough, "I've survived chemical attacks, gunshot wounds, stab wounds, I've lost an eye, I've been killed before, and just so recently I had the pleasent experience --" A sharp cough, "-- of having a lung exposed to open space." He looked as the elevator door opened, "So get over yourself Marine. You're gonna see a lot of people die in this line of work."

With that, he left the elevator as the two NMX prisoners were ushered inside the elevator. He was glad to be rid of the presence of a disrespectful Marine. He didn't expect his boots to be licked, but that Marine's response was entirely unjustified. Even under stress, a well-trained soldier knew well enough to respect the chain of command. As he was prompted by Bernhard, his answer was another sharp, raspy cough, and then he finally spoke.

"Greer, you know I'm made of tougher stuff than that." He smiled beneath his mask, "I've been killed before, so I doubt some squid with a mad-on for me is gonna' keep me down."

"Boohoo for you, Staff Sergeant! Cry more, why dont'cha?" Black called over an open channel for everyone to hear.

Not that it took much of their attention. The doorway, from which Rita and Henry had come, exploded violently, knocking them down. The stairway which the squad was using exploded, crumbling and dropping Samuel, Bernhard, Cedric, Matteo, Lisa and Alexandra a floor down. Phaedra, Sawyer, Henry, and Rita were left alone at the fifth floor entrance.

From the doorways nearest, six Rippers and four Mindy armors emerged, firing all their weaponry. Behind them from farther down the corridor, NMX Nekos and Mishhu emerged armed to the teeth with anti-armor weapons.

The corridor was shorter than the ones below. At the end, there was a door to what seemed like a large room. The Nekos and squids were positioned behind a makeshift barricade which blocked the door. They had even managed to set up a couple turrets armed with grenade launchers.

Because Henry and Rita had been knocked over, most of the fire hit Phaedra and Sawyer. Phaedra's shields were completely taken out and several NMX rounds had penetrated her right shoulder and wounded her. Sawyer's larger Aggressor was down to 10% shields and gauss round hit had broken his left arm while aether streams had come close to burning to stomach.

-------------------------------
In Orbit

The Nepleslian fighter squadrons had engaged the hundreds NMX battlepods farther out to prevent them from reaching the larger warships. But still most were slipping past the cordon and 4th Fleet's anti-fighter weapons began throwing out a wall of plasma, high velocity rounds and lasers to stop the NMX strike units.

Only through sheer numbers were NMX battlepods able to breach the Nepleslian's defenses and begin their suicide missile runs. Over four hundred battlepods had attacked the 4th Fleet warships. Only about one hundred were actually being stopped by the fighters. Even as dozens of battlepods bloomed in fiery death, more were able to release their deadly payloads.

The escorts Steadfast and Meteor listed and vented oxygen and debris as NMX warheads struck their port. Moments later, NMX battlepods crashed into the same warships' stern. The Meteor exploded as its engines and fusion cores overloaded. Steadfast began launching evacuation shuttles packed with wounded and shell-shocked crew. Only the bridge crew had remained to keep the guns firing and the ship in formation.

Sabre and Ardent suffered from similar attack from their starboard. Yet through a supreme effort, both ships continued to stay in the fight and maintain their formation to protect the larger vessels whose greater firepower was required when the NMX warships closed.

Only the Eclipse was troubled as its shields were reduced and its hull armor damaged in several places. However, its weapons and crew were unfazed.

Slowly, almost lazily, the NMX warships, now identified as two carriers, four battleships, four Cruisers, six Pillagers, ten destroyers, eight scouts and eight LP ships advanced.

"Send the shuttles to the moon's surface. Detach a flight from Grey Squadron to protect them," Admiral Valken ordered. He turned to his console and sent a coded message to Sergeant Volkov.

Code:
Fleet has engaged. Shuttles are en route for pick up. Fleet's survival paramount. You have fifteen minutes before I order the Fleet to withdraw.

"Captain, get the crew from Steadfast aboard," he looked for the nearest cruiser, "Warhound. The Fleet needs to buy the Marines twenty minutes, think we can manage?"

"Considering how slow the Marines always are, I'm surprised you're only asking for twenty. But, maybe," Ironside replied, trying to appear less stiff.

Valken simply nodded. The Fleet's survival as a naval fighting force was key to Nepleslia. Marines could be replaced faster than warships. That was the cruel mathematics of warfare.

Samuel was scrambling up the stairs, getting flashbacks from conditioning - it's not like he had gone up a couple million of these things in boot camp or anything - while trying to keep up with the squad. He was somewhere in the middle, jostling with the other squaddies, when the floor gave way with an explosive crunch and the sound of twisting metal.

Before he knew what had happened, he had tumbled back down to the lower floor, the squad forming a tangled mass of PAs on the ground. He started untangling himself as quickly as he could, to the sound of a battle going on above them, explosions and energy weapons splattering the remnants of the stairwell. Just once, he thought, just once I'd like to get into a fight where I wasn't made totally ineffective before it started. He pulled his arm free from beneath another Hostile (he couldn't tell whose it was) and reached for the ground, trying to inch his way out of the pile. "Come on back there, someone's got to move," he said, kicking frantically.

An explosion.

Dust and debris.

Pain.

Pain erupted in Phaedra's right shoulder as her shields dissipated and several rounds embedded into her flesh.

"Aagh! Shit!" shouted Phaedra involuntarily as she felt most of the strength in her right arm give out. She saw on her HUD that the rest of the squad was now a floor below her position.

"An ambush. You led them into an ambush. You let your squad die!" shouted a voice in her mind.

"No! I will not let them die here!" Phaedra shouted back in her mind. With a cry of agony Phaedra raised her MPR back up to her injured shoulder and began firing round after round at the nearest NMX enemies; each shot of the MPR sending the stock slamming back into her wound.

Without thought she used an entire five round magazine, reloaded and then began to fire again; firing EMP sabots at the heads of Rippers and Mindys alike.

She contemplated the possibility of falling back, and then the message she received from Admiral Valken confirmed it.

"Fall back!" said Phaedra, horrified that she was even speaking the words.

"Damn it; we were so close to acquiring the package..."

But whatever weakness may have first been apparent was now gone, replaced by a determination to keep her Marines alive.

"FALL BACK! ENEMY IS SUPERIOR! FALL BACK!" she shouted.

"EVAC INBOUND NOW! WE HAVE FIFTEEN MINUTES BEFORE THE FLEET WITHDRAWS!"

"FALL BACK CAVALIERS! FALL BACK!" shouted Phaedra, still aiming and firing at the closest NMX foes so that Sawyer, Henry and Rita could regain their footing and begin to retreat.

Sawyer being one of the two still up locked onto the oncoming powered armors with his monoeye and began firing his shoulder mounted plasma chainguns as well as firing several rounds from his AOP at the heavier armors. "I'll cover ya'll, I can handle this stay behind me and I'll do my best to hold them off until we can get the hell out of this place" he said as he went to full cyclic rate of fire on his shoulder weapons and firing volleys of bolts from his racks at the oncoming powered armors. "Run, I'll hold them off as long as I can and if possible rejoin you, otherwise I'll see you when I get recloned" he shouted continuing to send massive volleys of fire at the oncoming NMX armors.

Bernhard tried to get up and slip over someone else's shoulder. Then he heard something about Sawyer covering them. The fool! But a floor down, there was little Bernhard could do without exposing himself to more enemy fire. Screw it!

He pulled out both handheld weapons, HPAR in his right and plasma autocannon in his left. Bernhard activated his thrusters and shot up to the small landing where his stranded squadmates were. He fired at the first Ripper in front of him. "Get up!" he yelled at Henry and Rita.

"Aubrey, you arse, you realize you're gonna get killed?" Bernhard asked, adding his fire to Phaedra and Sawyer. The bright steady plasma beam and thundering moneyshots made a violent cacophony of sounds with Phaedra's MPR and the AOP's rounds.

Lisa only managed to look up when stairwell in front of her fell and most of the squad fell down. Pressing her against the wall. They were on the 4th floor while part of the squad was up there on the 5th and were getting hammered. She looked around noticing the door in the hall on the 4th floor. It lead right under the fifth one and it gave her an idea.

"SARGE!" She shouted Cedric'S way. "There is hallway right under those motherfuckers! How much explosives you got? You could explode the floor right under their fat assess! Bernie! How far in the hall are enemies?"

_________
_________

Alexandra tried to get back on her feet. There were stumbled peopel around her and shitstrom happening up front. She heard the call fo retreat from Wolf and it seemed like good idea. Alex did not like it, but it was order. Not to mention there were too many people on the stairwell and other medic of the team charged into combat. Her armour was already damaged and she decided to hang back in case somone got injured. She raised her AS4GS and covered teams back.

"They're all over the bloody place. If you can't cave in the whole place, its pointless!" Bernhard replied as a gauss round smashed his LPA and slammed into his hand. His shields were gone and he felt bones smashing in his hand. The pain was terrific, almost impossible for him to describe in words.

"All units, we need to get out! NMX forces are swarming from their underground barracks! We cannot hold the entrances for much longer!" the speaker was identified as Sergeant Hawkins.

-------------------

First Floor
"Thomas, set the charges! Don't let them use those elevators! Holmes, get your boys to cover the stairwell. If those Cavaliers are going join us, that's the only way left for them!"

Sergeant Rochester was shouting orders, pointing with one arm and shooting with the other. He watched Holmes' small unit of four head towards the stairwell. It also connected with the lower levels.

Goddamn, how could they have known the NMX were using this facility as a training facility for their PA units? And underground tunnels leading to multiple locations! "Roche, it's getting really hot out here! Squids are popping out of the ground! Shuttles are three minutes out!"

"I know that, Hawkins! Get some of the flyboys on the horn for air support!" Rochester yelled back.

Lisa frowned. Okay that was not going to hurt probably, not to mention that 4th floor might have been full of those buggers too. Lisa straigthened up and lowered one of her mortars, starting to work on her suits AI. For what she had in mind she needed it's help with piloting.

"Okay! Idea number two!" She commed to others. "You peopel actually listen ot sergeants orders and retreat and I will fire one of my mortars in as covering fire! How does that sounds?"

Her idea was od uing boosters with AI assisst to jump up so she could aim and ifre inside the 5th floor hall full of enemy. With AI she should be able to be stable and fire straight into hall. If anything, only one who will pay for it will be hers. She also programmed the suit to scan Mortart trajectory and if the point of explosion would be close then ten meters to not fire as a safety measure. Lisa could mess up the jump after all.

"I am ready!" She commed. She held onto the mortar waiting for orders to do it or get the hell out of here. She really wanted to do it thought!

Sawyer replied as he continued firing "everyone dies sometime Bernhard, at least if I die I can let the rest of you get away from this situation. That will make my death worthwhile if it enables you to live."

"AGH, SHIT!" Rita cried out in pain as she was thrown to the floor. She jumped to her feet in a jiffy and immediately started firing both of her weapons across the hall. That's when she had an idea. "I've still got some missiles left, I'll buy us a little time!" Rita shouted, as she stepped in between her comrades and fired her last volley of BOLTs... Into the ceiling. Hopefully, this would cause it to cave inward, showering her enemies with shrapnel and debris, while creating a smokescreen to help inaccurize incoming fire. She put her gun in front of Phaedra and used it to force her back.

"With all due respect, sir, your shields are down and you're made of flesh and blood! Me and the big guy will cover both of you, and we'll be right behind! Now get moving! GO!" Rita said, firing a sweeping line from her LPA and HPAR, while blasting incoming projectiles with the pulse lasers on her shoulders. "Sawyer, you go first!" As her comrades moved back, so did she, until she was at the edge of the destroyed stairwell. She jumped down as soon as her allies were clear.

It wasn't the rubble or debris that kept Matteo down.

It was the fact that several tons of Marine was standing on top of him. "Shit, get off of me!" a voice shouted over the comms. A hand burst out of the gravel underneath the other marines as the power armored man pulled himself out from the mess. "Way too soon Sawyer! The evac isn't even here yet - save it for the playoffs man!" he shouted over the comms. His thrusters briefly flared as he leaped out of the hole and up to the firing line. The large rifle in his armored hands started to chatter away non-stop as he tried to keep the enemy suppressed during the retreat.

"I still got next to all my mini-missiles left Sir - fire it along with Lisa's mortar?" Time was ticking, but unless he used what he had right, they were screwed.

Cedric didn't waste anymore energy on Black; a man who was obviously a Marine in name only.

In fact, as he entered the stairwell with the rest of the squad, he didn't have any time to do so if he had wanted to.

In a flash of smoke and debris, he suddenly found himself falling. Unassissted by the vacuum-like state that had once been on the first floor, the bulky and and otherwise unyieldy Aggressor's mass fell to the stairway below without any stopping it. Landing with a pained grunt, he just about bit his tongue to avoid screaming at the pain that lanced through his lung. Rolling down several of the steps, he barely stopped himself from going all the way to the bottom of the staircase, and managed to scramble up a few steps (grabbing his shotgun off the ground once again as he did so) before the real chaos tore the air apart around his fellow Marines still one floor up. As one of the senior NCOs of the team, he had access to a wider variety of information as a default, and so he winced as his HUD started showing some of the more grim-looking life-support readings from the suits of his squad (though one could also attribute the wince to the still tingling pain in his lung). The first one that appeared was Phaedra's, followed in short order by the team's only medic still on-field.

"Sargn't!" Cedric bellowed, running for the hole in the roof, "Get the hell out of fire!", He continued, "Bernie, get the fuck down!"

He had clicked in to command mode, "Negative on that plan for now, Lisa!" He aimed his shotgun up the hole to cover any enemies following any of the Marines who fell down, "Wait till people are clear!"

He finally turned his attention to Phaedra once again, "Where do you want us moving, Sargn't?! Fourth floor, or jump up to the fifth?!"

"Shit, SHIT, SHIIIT!!" Henry's composure had been broken by the sudden onslaught of NMX forces. He was thankful for being knocked over and avoiding most of the fire, but he wasn't without taking a beating. His mind was focussed on escaping. His first instinct was to throw up his shield drones, in all likelihood sacrificing them all so he could make a getaway and protect the others.

"I don't think we have fifteen minutes!" Henry yelled above the dragnet as he watched his shield drones dwindle and die on his HUD, one by one. He was trying to keep the group covered with HPAR fire, but remained on the defensive. He and the team had to wait until the cavalry came even though he and the team were the cavalry.

Then he realised that his shield drones were the only ones he had left. They were spent. Damn, he'd gone all in on the first round. He still had grenades. Plenty of grenades.

"NO ONE IS BEING LEFT BEHIND!" shouted Phaedra, firing her last sabot round and then returning the MPR to her back. She then drew her sidearm, pain singing in her shoulder.

"Sawyer, if I have to drag you out of here myself I will! Lisa, no mortars inside; save them until we vacate the building," said Phaedra as she ducked behind Rita's armored form.

"MOVE IT MARINES! DOWN THE STAIRCASE!"

Bernhard sighed and ejected the Aggressor's data core. If need be, he could transplant those memories into a cloned body. "Fine, do whatever you want. Sergeant, I'm falling back down the stairs." Bernhard fired his remaining mini-missiles but didn't stick around to see their effect.

He leapt back down to the fourth floor and began his descent to the first floor, jumping flights of stairs and slowing his landing with thrusters. Each time he moved, the pain in his left arm began throbbing violently. By the time he reached the second floor, Bernhard had locked the Hostile's left arm in place so that it would not move around.

"To all Nepleslian forces, this is Private Greer from the Cavaliers. I'm coming down the stairs, do not fire!"

-------------------

Bernhard's missiles crashed into the first rank of two Rippers, knocking them back. One, which recovered quicker, was then struck by Rita's plasma and moneyshots. It staggered for a moment and fell forwards with a crunch. Rita's BOLTs slammed into the ceiling, which groaned and buckled from the impact but did not collapse.

---------------------

Behind those Rippers, more NMX power armors fired mini-missiles and gauss rounds at Phaedra and Sawyer. In the nick of time, Phaedra leapt down to the floor below but Sawyer, still maintaining his position took the full force. As the smoke cleared, those still on the floor below could see Sawyer on his back and firing. But he did not, and could not, rise. The missiles and a gauss round had torn off his left leg.

----------------------

1st Floor

"Sergeant Volkov, we're holding the stairs on the first floor! NMX reinforcements trying to use it to get up from lower levels. Recommend you hurry the hell up!" a voice tagged as Staff Sergeant Holmes said across the squad radio.

"Roche, shuttles are here, the NMX have fallen back for the moment. Time to go!" Hawkins reported to Rochester.

"Not until those damnable Cavaliers are here! They're the whole reason the mission was launched!" Rochester said, putting a single moneyshot into a Ripper's faceplate.

"Sawyer! Fuck, god dammit!" Rita shouted, aiming both of her weapons at the ceiling above the Rippers and letting loose a full burst of ammo, hoping the BOLTs had weakened it enough to cause it to collapse when showered with molten metal and plasma bursts. "Not today, assholes! Let's go, pal!" She cried out, letting go of the grips of both her weapons and letting them fall loosely against her, hanging around her shoulders by their slings. She grabbed Sawyer and hoisted him over her shoulder, then leaped over the edge down to the floor below. She made sure not to hit any of her comrades in the face with her feet on the way down. "He's pretty badly wounded, if we're gonna go, we need to go NOW!" Rita yelled.

The Marines were retreating, dragging their stricken comrades from the upper floor, even as the wall shook with explosions. Samuel prepped his LPA as they went past; he wasn't particularly looking forward to the next few minutes, having to cover for medevac and extraction against God knows how many Squids upstairs. And yet, someone had to do it. Plus, it wasn't like he was doing anything else.

He ran over to the elevator and punched the down button; the doors slid open. Finally, he'd finally get to see what the ground floor of this place looked like. He waved his hand, signaling to the other marines to pile in. Downstairs, they'd have safety in numbers of a sort. Anything to get out of here as quick as possible, he figured.

Lisa scowled and retracted her mortar. It was understandable, but Lisa still thought it was worth the risk. THat mortar shelld would make bad day to all those enemies. When peopel started moving down from 5th floor, Lisa moved to side. Her shields were full and her suit only slightly damaged. Not to mention she had quite a lot of firepower.

"Move guys! I will cover the retreat!" Lisa siad and prepared three drones to patch the 5th floor entrance with shield to slow the enemy down.

Alexandra was a little lower one the stairs covering teams back. When she heard Rita shouting she looked up and said cyborg woman jumping down with Aggresor over her shoulder.

"Bloody hell!" Alex said and rushed to Rita. "Let me help you, we need to get him out of here soon! I need ho treat him within minutes or he will bleed out or die of shock!" She said moving to help Rita carry him down. Aggresor was heavy armour but two hostiles and help from Rita'S cyborg body should be enough.
