RP: YSS Aeon [Mission 5.0] Darkness and Ice

Kyoka continued to lay Aether into the creatures, as carefully as her systems could allow. After all, the potential damage of a misfire still weighed heavily on her head. She targeted the creatures heading for the Science team.

Between the crossfire of Kyoka and Saki, the two creatures making for the Science team were struck several times and exploded. The wounded creature, after succesfully avoiding the missiles, faltered when one of its protrubances caught on an ice fissure and it was flipped onto its back.

Yoshiro walked calmly to the front of the group he was protecting and aimed at the fallen creature. He stepped back a bit as he pulled the trigger to kill the creature and hopefully end its threat on the team. "Ugly b**tard!" He said as he fired.

Arkase also added his fire toward ending the creature, murmuring an unheard thanks to the others who had worked to defend his team. He also began scanning for new threats.

The fourth creature exploded as nicely as the others had. Raining more bits of flesh around.

A number of smaller creatures came out of the hole and scurried about after the bits of the larger ones. When they grabbed a piece they made back for the hole.

Trowa was regretting not bringing that big 50mm Gauss Bazooka. Gas pockets be Fethed, he wasn’t going to let those little buggers go. If they wanted the pieces of meat from the dead things then by Feth he wasn’t going to let them have it. He also didn’t like the idea of leaving a tunnel opening behind them when they moved on. “Stamoules-Hei, put a missile right into that hole. I don’t know what those buggers are, but I know I don’t like them. Blow them up and seal that opening.”

As the fourth creature exploded, Yuzuhara's sensors picked up the smaller variants coming out of the hole. Confirming the location of the others on the team, her hand moved to the trigger of the grenade launcher.

Making the necessary calculations in regards to distance, blast range, shrapnel distance and optimal detonation height. She initialized the AIES to guide the Air Burst grenade on it's trajectory. If she'd focus as much of the blast downward as possible she could collapse the hole and hopefully some of those creatures in the process.

Sharply she spoke, "Clear!" as her finger pulled back on the trigger. The Rifle roared as the Air Burst grenade exited from the launcher's barrel.

"Seems clear," Saki reported as she scanned her surrounding. She kept her gass guns lowered though and started looking around the team. This might have gotten some more attentnion and Saki wanted to be ready for it. SHe was also glad she was little more back then others, when she heard Trowa's ordered. Sealing the hole did not look like such a bright idea to her.

"Fire in the hole!" Athena said as she commanded the launcher integrated to her right wing to launch a mini-missile into the hole. She wasn't entirely sure why her launchers had fired before, but that was a matter to be settled with more advanced diagnostic equipment. Last thing she needed was her suit developing an AI.

The airburst grenade succeeded in melting the ice around the hold and fried many of the smaller creatures. The follow up of Athena's mini-missile detonating in the hole detonated the vapors released by the first charge. A gout of flame shot some fifty meters into the air, and a tremor shock the area. A second later a fissure appeared in the ice and flame burst from it in several places. Launching various size chunks of ice into the air. As quickly as they started the tremors ceased and secondary explosions ran of out fuel. The fissure turned into a collapsing of ice to fill some sort of passage.

Around the away team chunks of ice ranging from golf ball size to volley ball size rained down. Pelting the power armor clad soldiers with no real consequence.

The fissure followed a straight path, identical to the one the creatures had followed to attack the away team.

Trowa watched the resulting explosion with a mix of satisfaction and cursing. That was rash, to rash. If the NMX didn’t know they were here before they sure as Feth did now. Stupid piece of Feth, what were you thinking? “All right, we need to move. That explosion is sure to attract some unwanted attention. One person at the rear, one along each flank; the rest of you up front with me. Let’s move.”

Athena came back down to the others, a smug look hidden but her polarized visor. "Wow, when I said fire in the hole...I really meant it." She said half way down. She stopped for a few moments when she noticed the straight path of the fissure. She studied it and then proceeded to continue her descent.

"Well that is not natural. Wonder if the creatures were following an artificial construct." She said as she assumed her position within the team.

Apparently Tsubei needed to work on her attention issues. A few seconds of spacing, and some of her subordinates decided to launch an explosive into an explosive planet. Smart. Still, she had to give Trowa credit for at least ordering people into formation.

"Please refrain from launching explosives into the planet! Remember that this place is highly unstable! And we need to step up the pace, now. 50 mph, on the double! Trowa, please continue leading."

In a separate, private note she sent to Yamamoto-Heisho,
Code:
What the hell were you thinking? Were you not paying attention to the briefing? That order could have killed us all! Not to mention alert the squids to our presence!

"I'll keep rear guard," Saki said to others. She was on that spot already so why move anywhere else. She kept looking around and checking backwards too. She released her dron and kept it 30 meters behind her, cowering her backs. She made sure it was sending data by laser.

Trowa sighed as read the message. Yeah, he knew about the risk of exploding gas pockets; but he made the call to fire missiles and he wasn’t about to make excuses. He sent Kyoka a reply message.

Code:
Aye, Ma’am. I take full responsibility. That was unnecessary risk and in the future I will try to be more rational. Though, with due respect, it would be helpful if you would pay a little closer attention to what is going on, Ma’am. Let’s work together here.

Trowa moved up to the front and began a scan of the surrounding area. There was every chance that they had been compromise as a result of their brief skirmish and Trowa wanted to be ready.

As the Infantry team moved out, Josea moved up to the battle scene and took samples from the different creatures. He did not have the resources to do a detailed analysis on the planet, but he would definitely do one once back aboard the ship.

He then followed Shina as she lifted and they sped off in the same direction as their defense.

---------------------------------

Once the Away team cleared the mesa, the visibility rapidly deteriorated. Their sensors a little while later shows ghost images of something flying past them heading out to perhaps the site of the battle.

Once the team had regained it's formation. Yuzuhara kept to the right of the rest. Having a bit of trouble with the changing formation positions. She had been used to being rear guard in training as such she felt out of place on the other sides of the formation.

For some reason the makeshift group seemed to be just winging it. Those who should be in charge didn't seem to possess any tactical skills what so ever. Where this really the trained forces of the Star Army?

Shifting her gaze right, due to a sensor ghost. There was nothing that she could visually pick up. Visually things were just too bad for her to make anything out. There could be an entire army just out of sensor range waiting for them and they would never know. It didn't really matter as the group didn't appear to be much of a match anyway in case of something like that appearing. She doubted that she would be able to protect much in that situation. Nonetheless she would give all that she had.

Saki was moving in the back of the group giving good attention to her surroundings. She kept her drone as far as it was possible so it could still send data and saw her. She hoped it won't have to fly back to recharge before they reach the facility.

The visibility was starting to get even worse and Saki had to call her dronw closer. She has bad feeling about this all. They should have just bombed the place and sort whatever would be left. She sighed as suddenly few images showed up on her sensors. They seemed to not notice the group, or they made it look that way.

"Ma'am! I detect something flyin past us. Seem like they went to check the fighting. They will know we were there most likely." Saki reported to Kyoka, but others could hear her too.

The sensor ghost faded as it was obscured by poor visibility and the mount. After a few moments as the Away team was approaching the objective they intercepted the following chatter.

"Base this is Spotter 1....." crackle... "found the blast site.... looks like a Scrounger nest reached critical mass..... blew up and took out the brood cell... we have exploded Scroungers and little ones littering the area... Returning to base..."

The craft flew past the Away team as they arrived at the foot of the mount the NMX facilities was located on top of.

In the lee of the mount visibility was marginally better, there were three tunnels directly ahead of the away team. They were clearly not natural as they were perfectly round and reinforces with concrete.

"Josea, Shina Kim, Keep close to me." Arkase said gently, beginning to feel danger again.

It was Kyoka's job to complete objectives. It was Arkase's to protect the science team -- and he would.
