Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

The damage inflicted to the Koyryu and Oiwa gave Nyton images of it's crewmembers being obliterated. He wondered if any of Eve's actual younglings had been killed by them. No time to think much about such things because not only was the Takumi fast approaching but the Miharu had shifted yet again.

"Taii, turrets on Koyryu! Aim for the bridge or the starboard nacelle! Heisho, disable Oiwa via hacking!"

With honed reflexes the Nepleslian was able to train four turrets to fire several rounds into the heavily damaged nacelle region this time more prepared for the navigator's tricks. Rather than a tight shot group like before he opened it up just enough so that regardless of which way she twitched it the Koyryu's bridge region would be hit.

The two remaining turrets were not idle however as Nyton quickly set them to track the crippled Oiwa in an attempt to finish it off.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

@Miharu:

In an instant, Miharu was repositioned out of the killing zone of Tamamo's aetheric shock array, appearing further below with its arrowhead point directed at Koyryu while backing away at 3000 kilometers per second.

Tamamo reacted swiftly, making a high-energy CFS spin maneuver to point its prow at Miharu before it fired the positron railguns it had saved for after the aetheric deflagration was over, adding to it a spray of projected energy beams from its Combined Field System.

The beams glared white against Miharu's dorsal shields, both positron discharges following them to cause the shielding to crackle violently. The regenerative shields, following their promised specifications, held against the assault: they did not weaken, they did not allow the positron attacks through and seeing that Yukari had reinforced them the target point of the attack - the starboard slope of the rollbar - sustained only minor damage to the armor.

Undeterred by Tamamo's added firepower from its mobile weapon pods, Miharu loosed her own attacks, crackling cobalt bolts enjoining her with Koyryu and Oiwa - seeing those two gunships were moving slowly, Nyton enjoyed great accuracy with his attacks.

Koyryu's remaining nacelle shattered in half from the attacks, spraying armor plates and the inner workings of its sublight engines while the next particle beams struck over the bridge. Hitting the bridge directly once was enough to threaten it with an hull breach and severe equipment failure, but the second hit was enough to spell the doom of its occupants: the bridge dome violently burst open as the air inside was released... and to someone whom bothered to look, the scorched electrocuted bodies of the bridge operators would be seen spiraling out helplessly into space.

Oiwa found herself in an equally bad predicament. Before Nyton could swing Hoshi's turrets to fire on her, Miharu and Miyoko were already hard at work effecting cyberwarfare against the enemy gunship.

Going on the assumption that Oiwa was eagerly awaiting renewed comm uplink with Tamamo, Miharu adopted Tamamo's IFF signature, matched its previous communication frequency and cleared that channel from jamming so it could speak to Oiwa. When she succeeded in getting Oiwa's ear, she went for something 'simple' - she didn't go after the MEGAMI and rather attacked one semi-independent function of the Sakura-class' life support system: the blast shutters.

Usually blast shutters were activated when a ship entered alert conditions and then they could only be manually opened, but when hostilities were over the ship's computer was capable of automatically retracting all of them. Of course, if there were hull breaches, the gunship's MEGAMI would keep the shutters necessary to the ship's survival in place.

So, in this instance, Miharu made an override on the monitoring status of the blast shutters and then sent the end-of-combat signal to have them open up again. Before Oiwa's MEGAMI could countermand the hacking attack, the gunship's innards were opened again to space with the atmosphere blasting out and the hull groaning from the structural stress and the threat of decompression.

When Nyton's two particle beams struck Oiwa, they impaled through the light gunship as if its superstructural frame was made of wet toilet paper. It was too much, and the Sakura-class nearly folded itself in two before it exploded into smithereens.

"That's four!" Miharu announced gleefully. Nyton had two main gun pulses worth of power in the capacitors, but the main gun was still overheating.

The only opponent left was the Tamamo, whom did not seem to like its chances as it put its sublight engines into overdrive and - at 0.75c - swerved around to then speed toward Takumi. Miyoko noticed the last enemy gunship disengage its interdiction field to start shrouding itself in CFS stealth.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Well, the NH-18 were easier to spot now. Growling slightly, Masako switched out her plasma rifle for her LASR-SLAG and checked her loadout again. A single SLEX round backed up by a couple of Airburst rounds were still in the magazine, just as she planned. The NH-18s were not their original target, but she had to disrupt or destroy them before they reached her squad.

Waiting for the rest of her team to move past her, Masako leveled her SLAG at the two and launched her SLEX round in between the two. Shifting her LASR to the side, she then launched her first Airburst directly to the right and behind of one slug. Another shift and Masako would launch the second airburst to the left and behind the second slug.

"That should do," she commented and used her inertial flight to back up into the corridor to follow the rest.

"Continue to the second power room," she told the Black Knights she followed. "We'll cut across to the Main Corridor and to the next section. Maybe we'll find a working control room there."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

@Amaya's Gate:

The Black Knights' five M6 Daisy power armor made their tactical withdrawal, hovering back silently with their skin stealth gone.

They had made it about halfway through the utility corridor to the control room when the NH-18 pincer-slugs rushed after them, turning themselves into waves of grey slime as they flowed in to attack.

Fortunately, by then they were far out of the way of the mishhumachina's tentacle weapons and the Black Mindy did not appear inclined to go after them - that, and the task of killing NH-18 no longer held any secret for Kai's team.

Daisy forearm weapons from Kai and Kyou efficiently stopped the NH-18's charge before Asher dropped in and released a 7-second long stream of superheated plasma at both targets, turning them into carbonized heaps on the ground. Masako and Nimura covered them while they did so to avoid any ugly surprises.

The task done, they moved on. The Black Knights passed into the control room, then dropped down the chute into the corridors they had previously fought the NIWS before finally making it to the first power room Masako's team had previously gone in.

Just as soon as they made their entry, though, aether flechettes greeted them. Cursing, they hid back behind the cover of the corridor's threshold (corners ravaged by the previous battle against the two NIWS) and realized that four other mishhumachina tentacles had been lying in wait for them.

While Kai's team remained the one on point with Masako guarding the rear, a communication got to them. "Black Knights? Mara here. We're under attack. Nekomachinas came first and that wasn't so bad, but now it's a mishhumachina. We-"

"Crap! Tsuya, your barrier's out! Both of you, get back in here while my shields still last."

A burst of static. Then: "Damn it!" There was a pause and finally, Mara spoke again: "I'm in bad shape, but I managed to get safely out of sight. Who made those things pack dozens and dozens of mini-missiles?!"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

The kill count was climbing and Nyton briefly grinned despite himself as he glanced at the Koyryu bridge crew being flung into vacuum. He would have to review that footage later when he had more time. With the heavy damage suffered he almost counted the ship as dead except that the hull despite being ruptured still maintained enough integrity to hold it's shape unlike the recently deceased Oiwa. Nothing was left of that mess. An automatic firing routine was set to completely wipe out the Koyryu with the turrets so that he could focus on a more pressing issue.

The Tamamo was making a run for it. A prudent move but Nyton was ready for it. There was a Subspace Detonator torpedo already loaded earlier in the conflict which had been configured to explode at a smaller radius to give the Miharu enough room to not be caught by it. There was no time to waste as the enemy vessel had begun to engage it's stealth. You're not getting away from me, bitch!

With triangulation and tracking data that had been fed to the tactical station from the sensors section he locked the Subspace Detonator torpedo to the ship and area where it occupied and fired. With the Interdiction Field having just been dropped the torpedo should have no resistance to it's trajectory. Even if the ship completed it's shift into stealth, when the torpedo detonated nearby the CFS should drop and thwart their attempt to stealth, thereby making the Tamamo a visible target again on top of losing it's shielding.

With both torpedo chambers empty Nyton quickly sent the command to load another Subspace Detonator and Anti-Matter torpedo in preparation for the next engagement. Along with torpedo refreshment he looked for any means to activate a cool down function for the main gun. He would need that weapon very soon.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Masako-Juni? Which way? Sounds like they need help back in the bay, but we're none too well off ourselves..." Kyou queried, deploying a Tactical Drone and using it to peer around the corner, trying to spot if this opponent had happened to leave itself a bit more exposed then the last one.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Yukari was glad for Nyton's initiative. She put Miharu on a course to intercept Tamamo, but she didn't push the ship above 0.1 c via CFS. She was happy to let the vessel think it could escape. Her ship could surpass lightspeed; she could catch up to it if she had to. She also wanted to give the turrets as much time as possible to put Koyryu out of its misery.

She angled the shields aft as they left the lead Sakura gunship behind and headed toward its sister.

At that moment, her mind was formulating an answer to the problem Takumi presented — with few torpedoes and a stressed main gun, which could not operate at peak efficiency anyway, destroying the large cruiser was not likely without some help. Getting too close to the enemy vessel was also impossible without Kotori.

She shook her head and refocused. One demon at a time.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Miyoko couldn't help but let a tired grin spread across her face as the Oiwa and Koyryu both fell in quick succession... one versus one was more like her kind of odds. That the Tamamo tried running just showed that they were aware that things were swinging toward the Miharu. Of course, better to finish them now so that they couldn't spring out and stage a surprise attack later...

But then, the point of stealth was that it was hard to see with sensors. While Nyton fired a torpedo toward the retreating ship, Miyoko activated the Miharu's interdiction field to keep it in place... not to mention make it completely blind if they did go into full CFS stealth.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

@Miharu:

Particle beams pounded into Koyryu's right flank. Directionless, slowly moving and with its shields largely ineffective against the incoming attack, the Sakura-class' hull soon tore open. Internal anti-matter explosions had the light gunship spew large chunks of itself out of the gaping breach before its aetheric generator lost scalar field containment.

The ensuing aetheric explosion expanded and briefly engulfed Miharu, but the cruiser soon outranged it, unscathed thanks to the reinforced rear shielding.

Nyton's torpedo also did its job. Even confided inside a single ship's interdiction field, it was still able to hit FTL speed sufficiently high to give Tamamo little chance of escape. As the last enemy gunship's shielding and FTL propulsion powered down, it spun around on thruster power, intent on delivering a parting shot with its positron railgun. It was a long shot, given how Tamamo was 275 000 kilometers away; Yukari would have an ample 1.5 second to dodge.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Masako felt as if something heavy had been deposited into her stomach as she listened to the communications chatter from the hanger. Grimacing, she willed herself not to think about that as she switched weapons again to her plasma rifle. "Black Knights, concentrate fire upon the tentacles," she ordered with a steady, almost like a cool glacier as she stamped upon emotions that could get them all killed.

"Mara-shoi, try to evacuate with what you can," she sent via an encrypted, burst transmission. "And I want a status report." Masako continued as she peeked over the wall and began to unleash a barrage of plasma fire at a single tentacle. "Nakamura-heisho, how many tentacles does this thing have!?"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Fuckin' up what matters!" Asher said in response to Masako's orders as he raised up his Plasma rifle and unloaded into the tentacles that had been placed in waiting for them. If he could be the first one to shoot, maybe, just maybe that Black Mindy would take a swipe at him. Oh ho ho! What a joy it would be to get his hands around his opponents neck, or at least make her bleed. If she bled, this hide-and-seek game would be a whole lot easier for them.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Tom received Nao's message and quickly replied. The PSC seemed to be checking out well enough, so he focused on the sprite's report.

With that, he reported to Yukari via a text message. The green text floated off to the side of the busy pilot.

Code:
Shosa,

As you're probably already aware, we're stressing one of the engines and the main gun is overheating. We have to win this battle quickly, or buy the relevant systems some time to recover, or we're going to be in trouble. The coolant is running low... I don't think we can quick-fix both these problems and the armor with our remaining supplies, so we have to be prudent.

-Freeman-Juni

Tom took a deep breath and checked on the rest of the sprite crew, making sure that repairs were being done as efficiently as possible.

-----

@Rin

After the two sprites squirmed out of the suffocating crawlspace, Eiko, who was on her back a few feet from the opening, first looked down at her bloody abdomen, then angrily kicked at the metal around the crawlspace.

"Stupid, stupid... thing!" Tears of frustration welled at the corner of her eyes, but she quickly shook her head at the mention of going to the sick bay.

"No," she said, "I'll be fine in a few minutes... the cut isn't that deep. We have work to do... it's not fair to you or the others if I go off and get treated."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

@Amaya's Gate:

As Masako and Asher unloaded over one of the tentacles, making its double-pronged pincered end explode, Nimura provided the answer for Kai: "30 total. 10 each for its right, left and rear armored segments."

Masako and Asher ducked back behind cover, with Mara's voice filtering in the comm channel to report. "I'm out of the mishhumachina's line of sight, outside the hangar bay. Shields got taken down by a missile volley and I took some armor damage from its aether beams. Sigurd and Tsuya are fine."

A new voice sounded over the team's shared comm channel: Kotori's. "Black Knights, there are three mishhumachinas in your vicinity. One outside the power reactor chamber you retreated from, another just outside the one you are presently and yet another in the nearby hangar Mara just vacated."

"Kurohoshi, take your team and power through back to the hangar." The Taisa ordered. "Don't bother damaging the mishhumachina, just lure them both into the hangar and then scatter to the outer corners of the hangar - my fighter-bomber will take care of the rest."

Kotori, using her Ryusei II's computer to boost her signal, sent a telepathic message to Miharu. "Yukari, the Black Knights are getting pinned down by heavy resistance. Once you finish with that last one, swing around to make a close pass with the Gate's upper left hangar to drop off Tom, Ichigo and Nyton - they'll join in."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Blinking out of the way of Tamamo's shot was simple enough, but with a pair of notices piling up, she was pressed to not just dodge, but put the enemy out of its misery.

Yukari closed her eyes to do the calculations inside her mind. She had half a second to spare. The ship's microjump placed them about 1,000 kilometers off Tamamo's dorsal side. Miharu's bow was lined up just right for Nyton to let loose a positron volley.

"Acknowledged, Juni. Takumi is on its way, too."

Then, to Kotori: "Acknowledged, Taisa."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Once again Yukari's piloting brought Nyton in line to fire at the enemy. Getting used to these light speed maneuvers he was able to quickly bring four turrets to line up with the Tamamo's bridge area. Being a little more familiar now with the Sakura class's ability to dodge he opened up his firing group enough to allow quick reaction for any tricks the pilot might use to avoid his volley. With the Interdiction Field now working in their favor along with the enemy's shields being gone Nyton eagerly fired once his instincts and experience aligned the turrets with the enemy.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Rin stood idly by, though rather awkwardly, as Eiko took out her anger on the crawlspace. She reached out a hand and wanted to say something, but retracted it.

"You really should at least get checked. But, if you really don't want to... then I suppose we should get back to engineering."

Having caught her breath back after that cramped time in the crawlspace, Rin reached down to Eiko, this time actually giving a hand in order to help her up.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Understood, Taisa," Masako replied with a grimace. And just how were they going to get out of this room without at least pushing those tentacles out of the way. "All right everyone," she spoke to her team. "Unload everything on those tentacles, we're breaking through to the hanger!" the raven-haired Warrant Officer ordered as she began suppression fire upon the tentacles.

"Move, move, move," she called out to her team. She no longer felt that heavy feeling in her now that she knew everyone in the hanger had made it out. Now she just had to get her comrades out of here.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Yes, ma'am." Kyou complied, opening fire at the tentacles. She couldn't quite tell if the tentacles themselves were shielded or not, so she decided not to send any missiles that way, firing slightly more rapidly with her plasma rifle instead.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Asher, Think you can lure that thing to the Hangar without getting Killed?" Kai asked, knowing the Malifaran clone would love to jump on the idea, and would probably be the best at it of any of the PA pilots Present.

As for himself, the Heisho knew the best way to avoid a Mishhumachina was to keep moving, as they were large ponderous beasts despite their many armored tentacles. He fired as many shots as his Plasma rifle could handle, while keeping his shield between himself and his enemy, using his heavy fusion thrusters to boost towards his destination.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"How tha' hell do I lure a bunch of tentacles? They ain't got no eyes." Asher grunted back as he opened a hail of plasma fire and five missiles onto the tentacles and it's source. Even if it sounded like a great idea, the Malifarian had little idea of how to tempt tentacles in his direction. He had an idea of how one would do it, but that only made him shiver.
