Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Tom narrowed his eyes in concentration, giving his instructions a once-over before making his move to the hatch.

Yukari's communication came in, and he relayed that information in a general instruction to the rest of the technicians: don't flip the breakers that Yukari was going to shut down.

It bothered him a little bit, but he didn't complain. There was obviously a good reason for it, especially for Yukari to use telepathy on him.

Nao... Rin,

Are either of you two suited up for potential vacuum exposure? I need someone out by the starboard wingpod to shut a valve manually. I will handle the other one.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Masako grunted as she continued to block her target's assault, each time wishing for more time to attack rather than defend. However, her weapon of choice was soon disabled and left her with only the LASR-SLAG on her back. Thankfully, Nimura provided the Warrant Officer with a prime opportunity. Detaching the wrecked plasma rifle from her armor, she tossed it aside and quickly brought up her LASR-SLAG while the assassin's back was still turned. Boosting back towards the discarded saber-rifle and arm, Masako took careful aim with her rifle and launched a HEI round at Meni, making sure Nimura wasn't in the line of fire.

The raven-haired Warrant Officer would then paused by the saber-rifle and brace her shield for any attacks as she dropped her LASR and began to attach the saber-rifle to her DAISY.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Nyton wished he could be impressed but there was little time for that. Again he sent out orders via text to the team members.

Code:
Great shot Nimura! Send some subspace missiles at Eve while Mani is occupied. Combine that while picking away at Meni. Kurohoshi, good job but keep Meni busy to give Nimura a chance to give us some missiles. Press your attack now while she's weakened!

Code:
Second Wave, keep Mani busy and try to pin her down. Don't let her interrupt this burst of missiles. Nakamura, Westwood, box her in, Gunshin, don't give up. Keep at it and wear her down while Mani is focused on Westwood. Force her to fight all three of you, not just one! Explosives may be able to push the chaff away and force her to remain busy!

With those orders sent and Kotori in danger Nyton had to risk getting closer. Eve had proven her speed in the Akuma but it was still not as fast as a smaller Mindy. Not that it mattered too much given the sheer amount of power she wielded. He had to exploit some angle though. The way she had just crushed Kotori's Akuma just did not seem right. There was no way she was that good and he had seen better fighters in battle.

Pushing his suit boosted agility as hard as he could the Nepleslian maneuvered himself around Eve's flank to get behind her. Telemachus continued to deliver lances of plasma out with every step until Nyton had positioned himself. At that point Nyton would then fire out two solid five meter streams of guided plasma. One would wrap around Vermillion's unoccupied arm and the other around the head but clear from the mouth. As though trying to climb atop the back of a wild beast the man would jump/pull himself up onto the back of the larger Armor. From that angle it should be hard for Eve to counter him with her aether beams/claws without him evading. At the same time it could occupy Eve long enough for Kotori to get in a point blank shot or for the subspace missiles to hit their mark. Either that or he would be going for a very interesting ride.

"Why so cold, Eve? Do you need a hug? A little birdie told me you like hugs. Maybe it's just been too long since you've had one." Nyton responded while moving in.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Freeman-Juni,
I'll do it. I'm close to it and I'm already in an AMES suit.
-Rin

At least it was something else she could do. Rin double and triple checked her AMES suit and headed towards the door which of course it didn't open automatically what with the vacuum on the other side. She took a deep breath as she had the atmospheric shield come up, to prevent air loss once the door was open.

A fact about a neko's physiology came up in her mind just before the door opened: neko's can survive for a while in space without a suit for a good while. Somehow, Rin didn't find this particularly comforting before going wide-eyed at the destruction that was literally right next door to where she had been working for so long. She of course knew that the hull integrity had been compromised, but she wasn't ready to see that bad of damage to her home. It took a good couple moments for her to get over her shock and to refocus.

The sprite carefully floated herself out the wingpod and into the wreckage. She followed the green spray of coolant towards the valve.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

A bead of sweat went down her brow and into Nao's eye. The memory of a great heat and strange, suppressing pressure fluttered by. 'Just one more. One more!' The sprite's hand reached out to the final rung, the muscles of her arm and ravaged back tensing as she exerted herself. With a finality, Nao heaved herself up and out of maintenance shaft. She just wanted to just flop out there on her belly and fall asleep. 'But she knew she can't do that. Oh no. That wouldn't do. She has a job to do!' Nao thought to herself in third person.

Freeman-Juni,
I'm out of the maintenance shaft; Rin is en-route to the valve. Awaiting further orders.

Usually, if it were an object she could have held responsible, Nao would have entertained the idea of kicking it. As the shaft was...well, a shaft, she opted for the next best thing. Putting the covering back on with a solid thump.

As a jolt of stress and pain ran down her arm and into her scapula, Nao regretted that.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Doshii Jun said:
"Saito-Juni, leave MEGAMI off-line. If you safely can do so, return to the bridge. We could use your expertise."

... hai.

It was a confusing order to Miyoko--in the armored cavity housing the MEGAMI, she was well-insulated from sound, and the constant buzz of encrypted telepathy wasn't anything surprising during a combat situation. She was blissfully unaware of the fight going on outside. Miyoko finished up the repairs she was working on, leaving the MEGAMI in almost pristine condition, but simply deactivated. Being able to turn it on quickly when the time came certainly couldn't hurt.

When she stepped back out of the access hatch to the MEGAMI, the new reality of the situation came to her quickly. The distant sound of something massive stomping on the floor was an easy hint that all was not right in Miyoko's world. It was another long, straight shot down the central hallway to get back to the bridge, with no friends in sight... the only nice part was that the fighting sounded far away, too, but she'd be heading straight toward it.

Nothing to do but to do it. Miyoko drew her pistol again, the weight reassuring in her hands, and set off toward the bridge cautiously.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Having Suzume and her power armor around did a great deal to relax Miyoko's nerves... she was well aware that her pistol would barely even be an annoyance to a power armor. Of course, if she ended up sandwiched in the middle of an armor fight in the narrow corridor, things still likely wouldn't turn out well for her.

But, thankfully, that didn't happen. She arrived at her destination without incident, dipped a thankful bow to the sprite, and stepped onto the bridge. Before she could greet Yukari, Hinoto's unconscious form caught her attention, making her give a surprised gasp. The view of the fight Yukari had displayed on the main screen just made things worse. "It... looks like I've missed a lot," she said as she crossed over to check Hinoto for injuries.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Masako let out an uncharacteristic curse from her lips as she was launched back into the changing room. The Warrant Officer had always known she was going to be facing veteran combatants, but witnessing those skills in person was enough for a chill to go down her spine. However, the young Neko was quick to stand up with shield forward and saber-rifle at the ready.

Now, this was an awkward battle. While she Yamataian training had involved some blade combat, it usually didn't come to sword/shield play. The Changing Room started to blaze as its tatami mats began to combust.

There were no words from the Warrant Officer. While Meni was a veteran, Masako was as well and the raven-haired Warrant Officer wouldn't go down without a fight. But charging in wasn't going to keep her alive. Instead, Masako began to close in on Meni with cautious steps. Her shield and saber still at the ready for what was to be a brutal battle.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Asher growled, seeing the Mindy pilot blast off and away from him after his attack failed to connect. Even worse was how she was able to pepper his armor so quickly after. With his blood pumping fast with the risk of death on the center of a crosshair, the Malifarian made a quick judgment of the situation.

Mani had set herself in a far off position that would make it easy for her to pick them off. So far, the only plausible strategy was to evade her attacks until something else came of it. No, that didn't settle well with him. Twice already in the fight he played the distraction, and so far, none of that worked. Third time was a charm, but it left a sickening pit in his stomach to simply try and hope he was agile enough to dodge. In that same moment, it seemed the first team had managed to damage Meni. Their leader, Nyton, however, was not doing as well.

So, Asher decided to pull a Masako, figuring he had little patience for an enemy he couldn't fight. He broke rank, and blasted off to the biggest, nearest thing he could hit. That biggest thing was Eve's mecha, which had Nyton in a two-handed grip. In all honest, the Hei's only thought at the moment was hitting something. Then, he figured, with this movement, he'd at least prove a distracting target to Mani should she fire at him.

Though, as he approached Eve, his simple mind started doing figurative algebra:

Eve + Arms(Nyton) = Bad

Eve - Arms(Nyton) = Not as bad.

The Arms. If Asher could somehow reach the arms and reasonably disable one with his fusion cutter, perhaps Nyton would have a better chance of releasing himself. Indeed, this sort of genius put Asher on Cloud ⑨, and what made him more proud was that he was able to devise it as he hurtled on the way towards what was perhaps the most diabolical being in the galaxy. So, he readied his Fusion Cutter as he came down on Eve.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

A shiver went through Tom at the predicament Miharu was in, as well as the helplessness Tom felt. The best he could do was make sure the retention fields were kept up, but they were only running on Hoshii's computer and half, if that, of their power sources were running.

He signaled Rin to turn her valve and began sealing the flow of coolant on his side.

Code:
Shosa,

I'm very concerned about this change of plans. If we were to lose the computer or our remaining power in any way, we would lose the retention fields and the ship would decompress...

...please tell me you have a plan.

-Freeman-Juni

Frustration was creeping into him as well. Being stuck in damage control mode made him feel like he had done something wrong, that he could have done something better to prevent the current predicament that had befallen them and threatened to end their lives with the finish line so close in sight.

Nao's standby command came in.

Nao,

I'm awaiting further information from the bridge. Please standby.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Rin gave a nod to Tom, before she carefully reached out to the valve. She braced a leg against a nearby piece of warped metal and began to try to shut off the coolant. Silly space physics. So many things could go wrong like the lucky survivor valve becoming not so lucky and breaking off, or the brace also breaking off, or other things in general breaking.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Nyton's sudden release of air was audible as he felt his lungs empty themselves. Their parley had gone on long enough. "Kill myself over a short lived bioengineered bitch like yourself? I come from thousands of generations of killers and you're going to die like the millions who have come before you." he replied with a bit of effort as he struggled to get air back into his lungs. He cut off the open channel and resumed secure comm. He then switched power to the barrier system to try and buffer some of the heat but with a readiness to change over to the gravimetric propulsion to enable him to slip out the moment Eve loosened her grip on him. He had to continue fighting. There was no way he could stop now, not with Kotori trapped under him.

Ignoring the pain, his mind raced as fast as possible to keep up with the other team members. How the hell are they doing this? he thought as he glanced at sensor data. Nimura being dropped was not helpful in the least but he still had a trick up his sleeve. This time he sent a message to all team members.

Code:
Kurohoshi, get ready to react! Gunshin, teleport right behind Meni and strike. Nakamura, Westwood, keep an eye on Mani and close in on Eve. Nakamura, bring the subspace missiles in close and hit Eve at point blank range. Westwood, just do what you do best.

Hopefully the force of the blast from the teleportation would unbalance Meni. Even if Meni managed not to be knocked away from the blast and into Masako's waiting blade, Kyou would be too close to react to and get run through. With Mani too far to be engaged they had to change tactics: using Eve herself as a shield. The added firepower of Kai and Asher on Eve might give him a better idea as to just how it was she was moving so fast.

Nyton sent a remote command signal to Nimura's Armor. The signal activated the Armor's healing routines to try and revive the sprite while another signal went to her missile pods to remote launch subspace missiles at Eve. One or the other was going to hit even with Mani at a superior vantage point.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

As his quarry zipped away and began to snipe upon Asher from a distance, Kai thought of what he may be able to do. Still under stealth but now not firing, he was probably no more than a speck to the Mindy's sensors, practically invisible since he was so close to the Hull of the ship. He thought about his resources and what he could do with it- And then Nyton broke his train of thought by giving him orders.

It had been stupid of the Yamataian to sit there and think for so long when there was a much more threatening enemy so close to him. Using Asher's rush of movement to mask his own stealthed movements, the Yamataian closed in on Eve, Unleashing a volley of Subspace mini-missiles before taking similar actions to Asher- He began to fire his Plasma rifle at Eve's arms, hoping to at least damage one satisfactorily.

As an afterthought, Kai released his drones and asked them to watch Mani in case she made any sudden movements- he wouldn't be surprised if their new tactic caused the veteran to close in and try to kill them while they were all gathered.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

As soon as she'd read her part of the latest set of orders, Kyou had the coordinates for the jump dialed in, and teleported, doing her best to come out of the teleport already cutting at Meni from behind. Failing that, she was going to do her best to force Meni into a fight on two different sides, hopefully counterbalancing her experience against opponents on opposite sides. As the teleport engaged, she gritted her teeth.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Nao actually growled a little at that. 'Nothing? Nothing? There has to be something for me to do!' She was growing irritable from the pain returning to haunt her again. 'Of all stupid rotten luck, the thing just had to have flare up and burn me while in a skintight suit! Who the hell designed it?!' As she made her way to the nearest console, a little shy of Yuzuki still, Nao came up with a few things possible. Sadly, the poor sprite wasn't given an easy time; things were a mess. Where could she start? Could she even do much from here? Nao gulped. The fastest, easiest thing she could find was to close off bulkheads so the fields could be powered down to save that much energy.

Nao's hand danced across the volumetric display as she did her best to close off the wounded ship from the empty void.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Kel said:
"It... looks like I've missed a lot," she said as she crossed over to check Hinoto for injuries.
"I stunned her; she should be fine. Take over for her. Keep you pistol in your lap."

Yukari winced as the battle raged before her. She was not able to contribute, sitting there, as they were losing their only computer. Though the computer did not concern her as much as Nyton and Kotori's battle.

Tom, however, was right. They could not run without a computer going. Especially with Hoshi going deeper under Eve's control.

"Saito-Juni, slowly activate Miharu. Raise the MEGAMI's defenses first, then have her take over the retention fields, then focus on taking over other systems from Eve. Do not take back the weapons. Let Mara handle them."

She leaned back in her chair, and readied herself to reconnect with her SPINE. Her focus started to narrow in on her plan, the best way she could imagine distracting and fending off Eve's pursuit of control of the ship. Her breathing slowed.

"I will be your first line of defense," she said to Miyoko. "If I can, I will make Eve go through me to get to Hoshi and Miharu. Be ready to shoot me if I appear to be turning." It meant giving up herself to thrwart Eve's intrusions, but if it worked, Miyoko would have time to win back more systems for Miharu.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

@ vs Meni:

As zesuaium blade and zesuaium shield clashed together, Masako made the dismayed observation that having lost one arm really hadn't seemed to slow Meni down a whole lot. The kuroneko's movements had simply turned to economy of movement rather than frenzied attack.

The Juni made other discoveries, such as the way her newly acquired weapon could either form up a single blade that could erect a defensive field potent enough to parry an aether-lit saber-rifle; or split into two bladed prongs which allowed her weapon to manifest aether attacks. She also had 35 seconds left of battery power to operate her weapon either for attacks or defensive field parries.

Meni's Black Mindy was wholly zesuaium armored, with its flexible points covered with zesuaium mesh. If Masako was going to compete and somehow beat Mani, she'd have to strike her with aether, because even zesuaium blades could not handily cut through zesuaium armor.

The exchange of blows continued, with their armors hopping around the burning tatami mats as they dueled, until suddenly Meni had enough room to bring her arm up so to point her scalar cannon rather than her forked aether weapon. Remembering how Nimura had been struck down in a single shot and that she herself also had her barrier down, Masako let out a cry and impulsively launched herself to the side, gracelessly crashing through the thin sliding doors and into the public baths proper.

Her tumble came to an unceremonious end as her Daisy cracked through a shower stall, ceramic tiles shattering apart. Ruptured plumbing caused water to geyser upward, and a moment later a downpour drummed over her power armor's armored skin.

Meni had not had the luxury to take advantage of Masako's brief moment of vulnerability: Eve's telepathic voice had cried out "Meni, incoming teleporter behind you!" and Masako's opponent had barely had the time to turn around and brace herself to parry Kyou's attack-upon-entry with her weapon closed-up.

Defensive fields crackled between Meni's and Kyou's lit double-pronged blade before Meni broke the stalemate with a sharp kick to Kyou's shin. That caused Gunshin to stumble back, ever briefly, giving Meni her window of opportunity to spin around her newest opponent's guard to try and cut at her helmet with her remaining elbow blade.

Hindsight saved Kyou. Having lost several companions to the deadly close-range zesuaium strikes of the kuroneko twins, a yelp and a fearful duck avoided the attack. It did not look good, or brave, but it did save her life.

@ vs. Eve and Mani:

When Asher came in like a speeding bullet, Eve had one of Vermillion's claws let go of Nyton so she could twist it around to intercept Asher.

No problem! Asher wanted to wreck one arm anyways so having one turn his way accomplished part of his goal to help Nyton out. The Malifarian had his M10 dart aside in what he thought was a clever dodge to avoid the claw's grab attempt at him and then spin around on it to use his fusion cutter.

Only... he got caught. Eve had apparently made a grab for where he would dodge in the first place!

Aether-limed claws burned off the remainder of his barrier before Asher found himself and Shikaku chucked toward the kitchen in a prodigious throw from the larger gaygoyle-shaped mecha, with Westwood then experiencing what it felt like for a wrecking ball to crash into kitchen appliances as his power armor did exactly that. He ended upside-down with his back deeply embedded into a kitchen oven.

Next Vermillion teleported, avoiding Kai's missile attacks and Kotori's attempt to strike at Eve with Surtur's remaining functioning claw. Vermillion appeared right before Kai, its barrier absorbing his plasma rifle's attack as if it was trivial, before its tusked maw snapped open to unleash a torrent of roaring-hot plasma in counter-attack.

The blonde Yamataian was surprised - he never expected something as large as an Akuma to be capable of teleportation. The sheets of deadly ionized gases swept around him, destroying his drones and severely depleting his barrier before he leaped back and out of Vermillion's almost dragonbreath-like attack.

No sooner was Nakamura clear that Mani opened fire upon him from her distant vantage point, her aether submachinegun drilling into his back, first collapsing his barrier and then striking into his fusion thruster pack. One of her many attacks struck the thruster pack's fuel supply, causing the whole dorsal module burst in an explosion that sent poor Kai careening away.

Nyton, for his part, was slightly better off, but not by much. Having only one aether-lit claw grapple him over one arm and his torso with Telemachus focusing on barrier regeneration had kept him alive, though it only seemed to delay the death Vermillion's searing grasp promised. The heat was starting make Nyton feel faint - he was at his limit.

"What she's doing... it's not WARMS!" he heard Kotori say on the squadron's comm channel. "She's got to have somekind of sixth sense, a way to foretell the near future and avert it!"

@ Tom and Rin:

With both sprite and Daisy-suited engineer straining against the valves, the copious twin leaks of ship coolant dwindled and stopped. Miharu's coolant reserves had been sadly depleted from that, but at least it wouldn't get any worse for the moment.

@ Nao:

Nao was unfortunately reminded via the interface she was accessing that Miharu had next to nothing in the way of emergency shutters and bulkheads. The vessel's designer, an elf named Firiel Morningmist, had apparently deemed that the room shutters occupied could be omitted for economy of space reasons, instead having those replaced in function with the 'more elegant and state-of-the-art' atmospheric retention fields.

In retrospect, Firiel Morningmist had meant the ship to be an exploration vessel, not a warship. She probably never expected Miharu could survive this much abuse in the first place.

@Hoshi's bridge:

Miyoko's brief observation confirmed Yukari's claim: Hinoto had been stunned unconscious.

Yukari's SPINE access to Hoshi's command interface proved less than she had hoped for. She never even got the chance to embark on her counter-hacking plan as it got shot down in its infancy: she was simply given blunt 'ACCESS DENIED' notices for her troubles.

With Hoshi's AI keeping them out, there was no way Miyoko could restart the MEGAMI from Hoshi's bridge. She'd have to go do it via the hardware tinkering she had left behind when Yukari had summoned her. Reactivating the MEGAMI also seemed to have big caveats: right now, it being shut off was protecting it from being subverted.

As for Miyoko's 'expert opinion' of Yukari's plan: If Eve was a NH-23, there wasn't even a ghost of a chance that Yukari - as much as Miyoko respected her - would be able to make a damned difference (and she was hardly a ship's avatar too). They couldn't do much about the mostly benign NH-23 Kotori being in charge if she desired, and now even less with Eve... and Eve actually meant them harm.

If their NH-23 Kotori had still been around they might have had a fighting chance via cyberwarfare, but as it was, they couldn't achieve much on the level of software short of killing Eve and hoping that Signaler Kotori's abilities could kill the Eve's software presence just like she had accidentally destroyed her original's.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Plan easily cast aside, Yukari looked blankly at the main screen. The fight continued, with the Black Knights soundly losing.

"Freeman-Juni, Miharu cannot be reactivated as I thought. You will have to continue without her, manually maintaining barriers if you can. ... I am sorry. I miscalculated."

It was up to Mara. Yukari's body might have been on the verge of busrting into some form of activity, but she was completely out of the fight.

She waited.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

The heat was becoming unbearable. Darkness was entering Nyton's peripheral even as Telemachus was warning him to the damage being done.

Code:
Sir! Do not pass out now! Suit integrity is being compromised! Initiating pilot restoration protocols!

Telemachus began hitting Nyton with stimulants and pain killers but it really was just throwing a bucket of water into a volcano. The searing heat Nyton felt was breaking his endurance. It took all his effort not to lose himself to the pain and begin yelling in agony.

No I will NOT pass out! I can NOT die here! I will KILL this damned bitch! I WANT to kill her so much!

Nyton's thoughts strayed to imagining how he would kill Eve. He saw his hand digging into Eve's head and gouging out her eye balls from the sockets before digging his teeth into her face and tearing the skin off. It kept filling him with enough rage to keep from slipping away into the abyss before death.

"What she's doing... it's not WARMS!" he heard Kotori say on the squadron's comm channel. "She's got to have some kind of sixth sense, a way to foretell the near future and avert it!"

Nyton listened and for a brief painless second thought back to his research. It only made sense she would possess some sort of precognition. Come to think of it there was a neko aboard the Gate with precognition-that's IT!

Struggling now just to speak Nyton forced himself to focus long enough to shout. I must go beyond myself! There is always more strength inside! The human will is....un....BREAKABLE!!!

"Kotori! The neko -ghr - from beFORE! With precog! Nnnnnnnyou BLOCKED her! You can block Eve too!" Nyton shouted before releasing an agonized scream.
