RP: YSS Miharu Mission 5, Part 2: The Fight For The Lost

Kyou stayed well wide of the fight, trying to stay close to one of the entrances to the room, so she could keep an eye down the passage for incoming unfriendlies. After all, there had to be some reason Melisson wanted them stalled here, and while she was also having second thoughts about opening the elevator (something about rippers coming out of the elevator and slaughtering their engineers), the hallways still bore watching.

@black Knights:

Nyton just barely outraced the explosions of the incendiary grenades as he closed in on Nimura, the later's pulse cannon shots being shrugged off by his augmented barrier. The Arethusa-aimed ASP connected with the two missiles trailing them, having them burst into dazzlingly yellow-white explosions; those had been flares.

The flares whitewashed his visual sensors, casting everything in their surroundings to highly contrasting illuminated surfaces and black shadows. He barely saw his rifle attacks connect with Nimura's LASR - he wasn't sure until Nimura herself discarded the now-useless weapon. At about the same time, her Daisy's barrier also came down.

Undeterred by being disarmed, Nimura pounced ahead - shield leading - to meet his charge.

"Ayumu, please send a medic to the bridge. The Taisa's in bad shape, and she's the only thing keeping Melisson out of our heads."

The nurse was startled out of her uncertainty while staring at Ichigo's empty tank by Miyoko's message. "Ah, uh, hai. I will see what I can do." she replied, looking around uncertainly. While some of the wounded had decided to get up and fight others were still not moving. Mostly the ones near death. Unfortunately most medic sprites were dead, Sanjuro had been unresponsive, and the only ones left were conscripts. She began to shudder at the thought of what to do but there was little else she could do it seemed.

I'm so sorry! Ayumu thought to herself as she looked at the patients who were still clinging to life. Aside from monitoring them there was little else she could do. Right now, as cruel as it sounded, the Taisa was the highest priority! Double checking her pistol and grabbing a bag with medical supplies she departed the medical center enroute to the bridge. "Saito-Juni, I am on my way! ETA one minute!"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

She's closing - this is it!

Nyton steadied himself and charged faster towards Nimura while maintaining fire from his LASR into her shield. Using his speed he attempted to make it harder for the sprite to react while at the same time Arethusa's nodal arm bearing the ASP extended outward as far as possible to aim at Nimura's left flank. From an indirect angle, Arethusa would open fire on Nimura's arm holding the shield. With the barrier down both the impact and the damage should be felt enough to force Nimura to veer off. Nyton suspected it wouldn't be much but for him it should be just enough to let go of his LASR (still attached to him via sling) and roughly grab onto her shield arm without crashing directly into the shield itself. At the moment of seizure Arethusa's nodal appendage would trace along Nimura's body and tear into the Compact Sensor Suite Pack on her back. The range should be just enough and by staying close to Nimura's body there would be little chance of her smacking it off course. He had to be ready to let go and fly off the moment his sensors detected the CSSP was offline to avoid the inevitable counter strike she would dish out. As back up to help defend from that the nodal system would have to defend him while he attempted his escape.

@black Knights:

Nyton charged in fast and furious, with Arethusa succeeding in angling a shot around Nimura's shield just shy of their collision, jostling her - that went as planned.

Nyton's grab for the shield arm ended up with him seizing the shield itself and then bracing against it while spraying hemosynthetic blood from Nimura's struck shoulder sprayed crimson and betrayed weakness in that defense, leaving her open - that also went as planned.

When thin, wickedly sharp limbs grew from behind Arethusa's back to stab toward the vulnerable sensor pack, Nimura released the hardpoint fastening the shield to her forearm and made to gracelessly fall on her butt, narrowly evading the attacks. She never actually touched the floor, but rather stopped and floated just shy of touching down with her legs bending just as Arethusa's nodal battle tentacles whiplashed the empty air above her - Nyton's plan shattered to pieces when Melisson's champion launched a trio of mini-missiles at point blank range.

With no time to reuse the shield left in his grasp, he had the time to twist around and dodge one of them. The other two SDM guided projectiles smacked into him, driving him back as their telltale electronic fizzle stripped Arethusa of her powerful barrier field.

...and Nimura, her Daisy's barrier reactivating just after the mini-missile impacts on Nyton, had both forearms pointed his way as she fired her pulse cannons. He tried to dodge, but Arethusa's gravimetric fields were also tied to inertial control and he proved too sluggish. Still, pulse cannons, even in the area burst mode, Arethusa could shrug off without barriers.

The same couldn't be said for his grenade bandoleers. One incendiary was compromised, cooked off, and the rest quickly followed in a chain-reaction that tossed Nyton back like a rag doll while Nimura shielded herself with her arms, her barrier flickering at it protected her from the worst of the explosions that had beset Nyton.

In an eyeblink, the M8 power armor was tossed back, spreadeagled, before a second explosion pushed it to the side and the rest followed, having it do a unsteady arcing corkscrew in the air from the added blasts of the other concussion and fragmentation grenades.

When Nyton touched down, bounding and dragging on the cracked calcinated semi-organic floor, he was still alive... but not in a good way. The man was on his back, helmetless and the nodal armor having slouched off most of his upper body and leaving Nyton exposed to the stifflingly hot air, while his legs were still encased but pinned down by the mostly inert material - perhaps the M8 Nadia still could function, but too much of it was carbonized at that time for it be be able to operate as a power armor until it self-restoration functions had a few minutes to renew it.

Feeling singed, battered, air blasted out of his lungs and stars dancing in his vision, Nyton could just bring his head up to see Nimura making unhurried steps through the haze of heat and smoke. Her right gauntleted hand reached up and retrieved the plasma rifle she had still in reserve.

@Defense Line:

The semi-automatic spray of frangible grenades, scattered in an arc and then detonating, fell through the bones of Miharu's main hull and mowed through the surging ranks of the Mishhuvurthyar horde. Some of the enemy fell, some of the enemy writhed and slowed down, others forged on with berserker fury only to be greeted by the eye-blinding explosion of the thermite round.

When things cleared up, Miharu's twisted near-skeletal shell was casting shadow over the smoldering remains of shattered Mishhuvurthyar shells.

"It's Kurohoshi-Juni!" Tsuya squealed, and many others seemed equally grateful for the well-timed relief. The next Mishhuvurthyar wave lagged some, the number of corpses ahead urging them to more cautious approaches.

"Those that are too badly wounded, get back inside and take a minute to recuperate," Mara spoke up. "Those with depleted barriers, hunker behind cover and let it recharge. Others, stand ready."

Two of the battered defenders left the line, dragging a third immobile Daisy with them. As they went by Masako, the many wounds of the unmoving Daisy - including an unnaturally twisted neck - indicated that one was beyond medical aid.

Chambering another Frangible into her Bazooka, Masako took this chance to switch her location to a bit of cover behind the defensive line with a good angle on the entrance the Mishhu were coming from. Seeing that corpse being dragged away only struck Masako as another failure on her part. If she had been here earlier, that may not have happened. Shoving the shield into her cover with her armor's strength, she shoved the ammo crate and empty magazine behind said cover before taking aim at the entrance.

With another thump, she launched the Frangible towards the entrance. She hoped it would detonate inside the entrance, but knew it would probably work well even if it detonated slightly outside. Afterwards, she ducked down behind the Shield and Cover to reload the magazine with six Thermite rounds.

"Please be careful! The Mishhu have been assaulting the front lines, and we aren't far away." Miyoko's drones, deployed at either end of the island containing the bridge and the medlab, hadn't picked up any enemies approaching, but that didn't totally reassure her.

Code:
Get that panel open! I don't have time to wait for this disgusting circus act to finish!

"Hai, Juni," Rin replied as she felt more and more pressure. It was as if she had already failed, and no matter how hard she tried, the blasted thing wouldn't open. That is, until it did open.

The insides of the panel was just... digusting. How could this soggy, squishy, organic mass even work like that? There was a difference between bio-engineering a neko and then the putrid excuse for internal circuitry.

Focus.

Rin followed Yuzuki's instructions, rummaging through the toolkit and grabbing the correct cable. She then opened up the teeth of the clip, the closed it around the mid-section of the cable. She then lifted herself slightly off the ground, before using another tool to sever the cable. Cutting a power cable seemed like a bad idea when she was covered in metal power armor, so it was better to not complete the circuit to the ground, right? After that, the engineer sprite attached the other end of the cable to the power feed.

During this process, the explosions behind her made her hands twitch and jump a bit in response. She made sure to ignore any 360 feeds or other armor's views of the action. They were a distraction and she just didn't want to even think about what they were doing.

Once Rin completed her task, Tom was already in motion, moving toward her position to run the mishu software running on his suit.

Hopefully, the bypass Yuzuki and Rin created would allow him to bypass the elevator controls and get the thing moving so that they could leave this godforsaken place.

Tom knew what was happening in the battle; his suit had notified him of Nyton's poor condition. He refused to look at the spectacle, however, his feelings twinged with shame.

At any other time, were it any other crewmember ... Yukari would do the same, she surmised. She loved all of her crew as family, no matter how they felt about her.

"Engineers, Continue working on the elevator. Soldiers, hold your fire unless I otherwise command."

Yukari, barrier charged and shield up, but weapons at her side, floated in front of Nyton. When her feet touched the ground, she was less than a meter away from his legs.

"You win, Melisson," she said over her armor's loudspeaker. "Our champion is defeated, but you will not kill him. Not in this way, under my command. If you want him, and all of us, dead, then suspend your games and end us. We tire of your puppetry."

The familiar explosion and disorientation surrounded Nyton. He hadn't felt like this since blowing off his original left arm as a teenager. Fortunately for him he had endured this before and it was unwelcome but not so long lasting that he was actually able to get his bearings back as fast as he did. Despite the ringing and stars and burning and other painful things. In fact they seemed to sort of melt away rather quickly as he looked at Nimura. Ironically it was his Yamataian body he had to thank for this, it having synced so well with his memory recorder. Before he had to use his will to command the pain to shut down. Now it just seemed to be an automatic response accelerated by the digital connection his almost two minds possessed.

Unfortunately those two minds were about to get splattered all over the floor soon.

You really need some storage pockets, Arethusa. Nyton thought before catching himself. No helmet meant no uplink to AIES. It was a bad situation he found himself in as he realized his legs were trapped and unmoving.

Odd, Nyton thought, I'm so calm. Here comes Nimura and right there is Death alongside her. And yet I'm so calm. Is this how a warrior faces death, Grandfather?

Nyton took in a breath of stifling noxious air and yet with Death staring at him again that air was almost refreshing. The body truly does appreciate everything at the last moment, he realized. It was then that a parable came to his mind about a man hanging by a branch that was about to break. Above him on the cliff's edge was a tiger poised to strike should he climb up before the branch broke. Below him was a lion, eagerly waiting to devour him once the branch broke and he fell to his doom. As the branch came closer to breaking the man happened to spy a single berry hanging from the branch. The man looked up at the tiger and then down to the lion and as he realized his doom was near he plucked that berry and ate it just before the branch snapped and he fell. It was the most delicious berry he had ever eaten.

A smile came to Nyton's face as he realized where he was, between the lion and the tiger. It was right then, at that very moment, that his finger happened to brush against something within the muck. Something that he had not been aware of before until right at that moment. Almost absently, his hand reached out to pluck the berry.

Only this was no berry. Still enjoying every last breath, still smiling in mad acceptance, Nyton plucked the ASP that had managed to land right there at that fateful junction. Without hesitation or doubt, not even concerned for how the recoil would affect him or whether he could see Nimura clearly through the smoke, he instantly aimed the ASP straight for Nimura's head and opened fire.

Even the sound it made seemed to ring as beautifully as a song in Nyton's ears.

The standoff was broken by Nyton's shots whizzing past Yukari to strike against Nimura, the first shot deflected by the barrier, the second collpasing it. Hardly touched by Yukari covering for Nyton, Nimura aimed her plasma rifle to counter Nyton and finish him off, even if that meant shooting through Yukari. Nimura had no reason to hesitate. Yukari herself proved a poor deterrent against killing Nyton - the blast of a grenade would suffice in ending the man's life.

"NO!" Whatever attack Nimura had been prepared to make was cut off as something transparent slammed into her Daisy with the roar of a rocket engine, knocking the plasma rifle out of Nimura's grasp as she was driven into the far wall at breakneck speed, crushing the back-mounted sensor equipment at the same time.

Nimura's new aggressor, another Daisy power armor that wasn't one of the Black Knights, misted into visibility after the hard impact and held Nimura against the wall. Nimura struggled, trying to wrestle her captor off her, but the power and extra weight of the latter's fusion thruster pack gave the newcomer a large advantage. Unfortunately, the newcomer provided ample cover for Nimura from anyone else - shooting at Nimura was much more likely to instead harm the person grappling her.

"Enough!" Ichigo screamed. "We do not harm our crew! I won't let you kill any of them!"

The feelings that began to crawl to the surface within Yuzuki stifled, for a few moments, the attention she had been paying to Tom and Rin. She still saw them, but viewed them in a kind of removed way, as if she had no hand in what they were doing. The process was simple - the Juni would use one of the hemosynthetic ports on his armor to link up, physically, with the node - the armor would provide the power, and all of the computational might that would open the doors. Yuzuki doubted they would even have to hack. Hinoto had been, perhaps, too dire in her evaluation of the technology. It was simple. Easy.

In front of her, however, things were neither so simple or so easy.

Like Tom and Rin, Yuzuki found it difficult to watch the scene unfolding; but, unlike the two of them, she could not so easily look away, and instead stared with rapt attention, the bead on her rifle never wavering. The sprite, all grown up, had seen death before - briefly touched upon it, in those narrow dark passageways of heat and steam, where the blood had floated in zero-gravity suspension like a ghastly pink and red miasma. And that was what she told herself. Yuzuki told herself that she was used to death. She told herself that she hardly knew the participants. The officer had never even looked at her, before. Nimura was the one engineer that Yuzuki avoided, out of a sort of odd reverence. Ichigo and she had been rivals, as much as they had been partners. Stubbornly, Yuzuki denied what she was seeing, with all of her waking mind.

Unfortunately she was lying. As Ichigo and Nimura struggled, Yuzuki heard screaming, and it took a moment to realize it was her own voice.

Ichigo... Nimura... Claymere-Taii...

They were family.

They were killing each other.

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Nyton thought as he held the pistol still in front of him. He had ceased firing and the new presence holding Nimura down registered in his mind along with the damage that had been done.

"NOW Suzuka!! Link Hoshi to have her override Nimura's suit and restrain her!" Nyton telepathically messaged to Yukari.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I will exercise extreme caution, Juni!" Ayumu replied back as she hurried through the ruined halls of Hoshi towards the bridge. Afraid for her life, as though a Mishhu were going to pop out at any second, the nurse scrambled madly at top speed. When she finally arrived at the bridge she found herself out of breath, mostly from fear, before stepping in.

"I-I am here, Juni. W-what is the, *gasp* Taisa's condition?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"Masa-chan! You're here!" Akiko called out from her position of cover over the radio. With her barrier in need of regeneration the younger sister had ducked down while Shizuka continued to contribute fire from her LASR.

"It is an honor to finally be fighting alongside you." Shizuka quickly messaged. Her magazine had run empty and she quickly moved back to reload.

"Huh." hrmphed Asher as he saw Ichigo slide in to stop the battle. He turned his gaze in between the different people involved. The Malifarian heaved up his flamethrower and readied it for action. "Y'know, this iss' juss' a suggestion, but we should probably go 'head n'kill Nimura since we got company comin' this way." mentioned Asher, he kept a vigilant eye out. "Y'know? Mel mentioned some extras if we interfered."

"That shor' looks like some interference." Asher pointed on at Ichigo.

Yukari almost lost her footing at the surprise shot that came behind her, but Nyton's mental shout rung in her ears. She did not see whether Nimura's SAS unit was destroyed, but she directed her CIES to co-opt the Daisy A's motor commands and those commands only. Her mind raced through a programming tree of instructions.

She had no time to quell Yuzuki. She kept her barrier and shield raised and prayed it would work.

Another body shot to the fray, rushing past Yukari with barely a tailwind. APR discarded in the muck - firing at the two wrestling sprites would have been counterproductive anyway - the new combatant joined the fray at full tilt.

In all things martial, Nimura was superior. After getting over the surprise of the attack, the warrior-sprite wouldn't hesitate against Ichigo. Even with a booster pack, that wouldn't work for very long. Yuzuki had seen enough. This was going to stop.

Surely the two of them would be able to restrain her against the wall long enough for somebody to do something.

Kai really, really wanted to move, to do something. This whole fight, getting them caught up in an enclosed space where they were practically sitting ducks, it all stunk to the Yamataian. but there was nothing he could do. He itched to move, to join the fight, to stop Nimura from murdering her superior officer, but he couldn't move himself from this spot. His LASR was kept trained down the passageway, the suit's 360 vision keeping him aware of what was going on in it, despite the fact that his helmet was craned towards the fight.

When Ichigo appeared, Kai almost jumped into the fray, but again, something held him back. He was fascinated, as if watching some sort of high speed vehicle crash, and as much as he wanted to join, he simply watched, doing nothing.

Then the screaming started. Yuzuki began to scream, almost yelling the names of the people in the fight, and she joined too. Kai cursed himself for being at this spot, across the room, watching the stupid door. He wanted to join, so very much- what the hell was stopping him? He couldn't pin it down, he didn't know anything more than the fact that his heart seemed to be beating as if it were pumping antimatter, enormous booms as the muscle contracted and expanded, pumping the Hemosyntetic fluid that served as blood for a Yamataian throughout his body.

What. The. Hell.

Kai continued to watch.

Yukari's plead. Nyton's defiance. Ichigo's arrival. The shrieking. The damn shrieking. The slamming of metal against metal and the hatching of improvised plans... It blasted into Tom's ears as he worked, crowding his already busy mind.

Ichigo was Nimura's sister. Of course she would have followed her. As for Yukari, Tom trusted that the Shosa knew what she was doing. But she was out near Nyton's downed armor, in the open, and had just tried contacting Melisson, who was probably 'evening the odds' now as they spoke.

They now had less time, more pressure and mounting chaos. It was like being in the subdeck of Miharu all over again.

Then, Yuzuki charged into the fray. Tom tried to reach out with his shield, but she was already gone.

"Son of a BITCH!" Tom yelled. It was too late to do anything to stop his rogue subordinate. Worse, both he and Rin's backs were now exposed to potential enemy fire.

"Rin! Cover our position! I'll handle the panel!"

Miyoko tensed as Ayumu rushed in the door, her anxiety putting her reflexes on a knife's edge and almost making her blast the nurse. Fortunately, she was at least disciplined enough to avoid that, and she took a step back as Ayumu entered, standing in a position where she could cover both doors. "I'm not sure. It's hard to do a diagnosis in power armor with no equipment. She's blind, and when she talked to Melisson, she mentioned blood vessels bursting... I think she's suffered ruptured aneurysms throughout her body, on top of the obvious." She was referring to, of course, the bruises and dried blood practically coating the Taisa at this point.

Unfortunately, it was the kind of full-body damage that would usually be treated in a hemosynth tank, and Kotori couldn't be anesthetized and still continued shielding the crew. Miyoko's finger rubbed up and down the stock of her gun as she spoke, fidgeting with it anxiously. "She also has a very high fever. I think resisting Melisson is making matters worse. I suggest starting by checking her blood pressure and seeing if we can find her intracranial pressure."

@black Knights:

Yuzuki came in just at the moment Nimura was starting to break free of Ichigo's hold, and the two pressed on in the hope that they could leash in a whirlwind.

But like some mythic elemental, Nimura defied their mortal efforts. One armored foot came up and smashed Yuzuki aside. Mini-missiles pumped out, striking both Ichigo and Yuzuki, eliminating their barriers. Armored gauntlet scrabbled for hold over Ichigo's breastplate, found purchase and pulled - with Nimura well-versed in how power armor were put together, a violent wrench pried off the breastplate of Ichigo's Daisy, exposing the hemosynthetic insert beneath.

...and she lost no time in pumping a shot of her forearm pulse cannons into the vulnerable area. Yuzuki had tried to rush back in, but the attack had been area burst mode and the blast pushed her back.

Ichigo stumbled back with a cry, the insert shredded and oozing red. Nimura's other arm whipped up to point at her twin sister's chest and another pulse shot out, the blast carving a dictionary-sized chuck out of Ichigo's ribcage, flash-frying the surrounding flesh.

In a flower of exploding blood, Ichigo was tossed backward and landed limp.

Being sprayed with her sister's blood had Yuzuki freeze ever so briefly, but it was an hesitation that gave Nimura enough time to pounce over to her. Luckily, when Nimura came by Yuzuki, the power of her Daisy faltered and instead of doing horrible things to her, Nimura just fell on all four.

"Stop," Melisson's mental voice cut in. "Nimura has her kill. I now return the full extent of her free will and remove her emotional limiter. I was well entertained, so, I will have her retain the muscle memory, somatic awareness and the functional layout of the motor cortex and reptilian brain functions I transplanted into her from Sharie Ketsurui."
