Nepleslian Command:

First expedition to the galactic northwest has proven successful. Preliminary research on Planet X indicates strong mineral deposits as well as potential habitability for a colonization effort. Attached is our science team’s findings:

-CAPTAIN JACK MILLER
NSS ALLIANCE

Quote:
PLANET X COMPOSITION:

Planet X resides in a star system approximately 10 LY to the galactic Northwest of Kxi’ran. The system consists of two gas giants and a single planet orbiting a sun. Of these, the two gas giants are located fairly close to the star. Distances are measured at 45 and 68 million miles, respectively.

Of more interest is the lonely planet in the star system. Due to the relative size of the star and distance from Planet X (hereto referred as “X”), conditions for atmospheric development have been ideal.

The atmosphere is considered habitable, although it should be noted that slightly higher-than-normal levels of Nitrogen and Helium in the atmosphere should be closely monitored, as any unnoticed imbalance may prove harmful.

X itself is a moderately-sized planet, measuring approximately 30,000 kilometers in circumference. Of this, 80% of the planet’s surface is water, of which 70% is undrinkable. The remaining 10% of the planet’s water is considered drinkable after minor filtration efforts, as there is a high level of bacteria in the water.

This is mainly a result of the composition of the hard surface of the planet in relation to the drinkable bodies of water. X has a single, massive landmass dotting around the planet’s equator. This landmass stretches in a stubby “S” shape from the poles. As such, temperatures tend to range from balmy in center of the continent to arctic at the tips. Furthermore, climates on the surface tend to be varied as well, ranging from tropical to desert-like.

Of particular interest is the vast underground network of tunnels that seems to run down the planet’s surface. These tunnels connect to rich ore deposits that can be utilized for mining operations.

We recommend immediate development and excavation operations for the planet.

CORE STATISTICS:

Planet: “X”
Type: Varied
Circumference: 30,000
Surface Gravity: .9 G
Length of Day: 18 hours
Length of Year (estimated): 295 days

END REPORT

After the report was sent, Captain Miller reclined in his chair, contemplating his next course of action for the day.

Morning had come, but he had no inclination to go exploring until AFTER he checked with the engineering teams in the subdeck to verify one thing: that they’d have a damn medical lab.

Just as the Nepleslian motioned to get up, the console on his desk beeped loudly.

It was a message from Central Command. His eyes darted back and forth until he finished the text and, with a long sigh, he slouched in his chair. Looks like the vacation was going to be short-lived.

They were going to Elysia.

"Ally, inform the crew, wherever they are on the station. I want them here by Noon."

Adrian woke up in a small alley way lying in a heap of trash with a throbbing headache and his shirt back pulled up over his head. At that moment he vowed never to drink absinthe again. Unless he didn't have to pay for it.
He stood rather shakily and stumbled out of the alley, digging through his pockets to make sure he hadn't been ripped off in the night. Through some incredible twist of fate, all his stuff was still with him. He wondered if he could make it back to the ship in his current state.
Would be easier if I knew just where the hell I was...
He saw a group of slightly more sober marines talking amongst themselves. He breathed a sigh of relief and yelled to them.
"Hey guys! You know how to get back to the Alliance?"

The musty apartment room slowly filled with brackish sunlight as morning dawned. The room itself was one of the cheaper varieties, fairly evident through the shoddy patchwork furniture, various unknown stains littering the floor, and the indescribable smell wafting from what could’ve once been a restroom. It was in these humble setting that Rico jerked awake from his face-down position on the couch with a loud yawning snort.

It took a minute for Rico to realize where he was, but after a few moments he rolled onto his back and looked around the apartment, hoping to gather some information on what exactly happened last night.

Okay. No woman sleeping next to me, guess I was too drunk to care.
Alright, head feels…moderately fine. Must’ve taken some medicine before I slept.
Mmmkay…shitty apartment. What a surprise…

Rico smiled after his check-up, quickly got up and stretched a bit, and commenced with a few morning exercises. He felt like taking a shower, but after quick look at the bathroom door, he realized he didn’t need one that desperately. After finishing up his routine, Rico took a moment or two to groom and admire himself in the broken mirror next to the door, turning his face side to side to make sure he didn’t miss anything important.

“Lookin’ good Rico. Damn good.” He said to himself with a slight smile as he ran his hand through his hair again.

Before long, he was out on the streets again, walking aimlessly, trying to figure out what to do with the day.

Two armed ID-SOL guards flanked her. Each had a stone-faced expression, several large bags, and huge high-powered rifles; the kind you gave your guards not because you expected combat, but for showing off the fact that you were important enough to bring out the big guns.

The woman who called herself Soreta, flanked between the two soldiers, certainly loved to feel important.

She didn't have the looks of a diplomat, however you sliced it; being a Geshrin she had the same sickly good looks as every other PNUgen model, hiding them under what could be, of all things, good clothes for jogging; a form-fitting red windbreaker with white trim and markings, and warm black cargo jeans. Her hair, too, was genetically designed, an unnatural cyan hue that draped over her shoulders, and bangs that completely obscured her eyes from view.

Her mission was, according to her handlers, to go to Elysia, and make a deal for peace; or perhaps even an alliance down the line. It was deceptively simple; Nepleslia, with the support of the Nerimians, could easily wipe out the dwindling 'Angel' population in any armed conflict. But the Elysians were proud, and they may not take so kindly to associating with the kind of riff-raff Nepleslia represented.

Well, that was good too. Soreta loved a challenge.

Soon enough, Jack Miller's attention was demanded by the young diplomat, who requested official permission to board. Sure, she probably could just waltz through the airlock right then and there, but that would be far less fitting of someone in her position. She needed to impress.

Sure, she could probably do her job without all the fuss, but what would be the fun in that?

The marines had been kind enough to point the medic to the ship, especially once they were promised extra morphine if they ever got shot down. Thus, the hungover, disheveled, and rather dour soldier found himself standing about 10 feet behind a blue-haired Geshrin diplomat with two ID-SOLs who kept giving him extremely nasty looks.
Of course, Adrian was way too far gone to notice. After a bit, he simply walked forward, tapped the oddly clothed woman on the shoulder and asked a simple question:
"Hey, can you please just hurry up and go through? I seriously need a shower and some different clothes. The door's unlocked, man."

Soreta turned around and glared - or at least, seemed to glare - at the rude soldier who grabbed her attention. The two ID-SOLs next to her pointed their guns at him menacingly, but she waved them off.

"I'm trying to contact your captain so I can gain formal permission to board...although I don't suppose a grunt would know anything about protocol." Diplomatic immunity did have its benefits.

"Captain, our dignitary is here," Ally said, carefully brushing her hair. "Shall I escort you to see her?"

Miller shook his head.

"Inform her that I am currently distracted by ship maintenance procedures, but that I will welcome her at my earliest convenience. Give her an officer's quarter to rest in and tell the kitchen staff to prepare something special for her arrival."

"Yes, Captain."

With that, the A.I. disappeared out of the door to meet with the new arrival.

Adrian answered the glare with a raised eyebrow and a slightly confused expression. He wondered what was up with her rather unorthodox dress, considering that they were on a military installation about to board a military vessel. Probably some civilian scientist with an over-blown ego.
"Yeeeeah, listen, I'm pretty sure you have all the clearance you need. Miller's pretty loose. Just go on in. And, uh, can you tell your friends to stop pointing the shooties at me? Not like I'm gonna stab or you or anything..."
He rubbed his eye with his left hand and remembered the person had no idea who he was.
"Uh, I'm soldier third class Adrian Decane. I'm the medic."
He held out his hand in an offer for a shake, but kinda doubted it would happen.

"You will address me as Soreta," was all the woman said, as she and her bodyguards disappeared into the airlock and completely ignored the offered handshake. From the look of things, Adrian's guess wasn't too far off the mark.

Adrian watched her go and muttered a stream of profanity, mostly consisting of the words "Hard-assed bitch."
Once she was inside he followed and headed to the showers. The ship was running with only a couple techs here and there, and the Alliance felt very empty. Kind of an odd feeling for someone who had been totally surrounded by others his entire life. He stripped down and turned on the hot water. It felt awesome. As he stood in the spray, he kept wondering just who the hell the woman was. He doubted scientist, considering the rather mean looking security detail. Which led him to assume politician.
Just what I need. Some snobby punk running all over the place spitting in my face...

Jet had casually boarded a day before and had been lounging in his quarters, thinking about where to center the security of the ship when he'd heard about the dignitary. He could only think how much of a pain in the ass it'll be to cater to some idiot. Of course he had gotten up to go greet this person and groaned at the sight of the guns. "Overzealous are we?" Jet mused to himself. "You must be the dignitary that was mentioned would come aboard. I'm Lieutenant Endurain." He said with a passing greeting.

A clean-out-of-the-shower Benji watched the Diplomat and one of his to-be fellow crewmates interact. He cast a single glance at the ID-Sol's accompanying the Greshin and heaved a light sigh. He read over his tiny paper of written orders and then looked up at the ship again. He sighed and then reached down and effortlessly slung his heavy pack over one of his shoulders and started off towards the ship.

As he approached he ran a metal hand through his hair, spiking it. Of course it natturaly stuck out at odd angles, but sometimes it needed a little direction change. It was instantly clear he was a cyborg, especially because of the glint of sunlight off of his light steel limbs. From the shoulder down his arms and hands were all metal and wires and of course adjustments to his muscles and spine to support all the weight. That and his eyes, each of them used for diffrent things.

When he finally walked up to the ship he studied it and then, not sure of what quite to do, he asked for the CO of the ship with a request to board, being a rookie and all. He had no idea what to expect and wasn't about to waltz onto some space ship with out somekind of introduction, formal or not.

Kokuten Gaiasis Chiaki the 5th had awoken early that morning. It was finally his time to go and board his first ship. He had heard stories of ships like these, he had heard stories of the might and fury the soldiers on thes ships weilded. Though he was never sure of how true these stories really were. He had heard most of them from some drunk bastard in a bar.

He was standing outside of one of these ships, this one called the 'NSS Alliance' smoking one of his favorite cigars. The tall Nepleslian adjusted his medic band so it faced outward, and then straightened his beret. He shifted his duffel bag into a more comfortable position on his shoulder. Kokuten made sure to load up his duffel bag with all he could. Most of it is contents were clothes, though it had more personal contents as well: a small picture of the family, his .45, a few dirty magazines, and a case of his favorite cigars.

Cybernetic eyes clacked as they blinked open and closed, cleaning the metal eyeballs under them of foreign particles. His metal arms shinked and clanked as he moved them around to make sure they working properly. He didn't want to look like a mess in front of his new crewmates, his arms had a bad habit of making horrible screach if there was build-up that the cleaning parts inside them missed.

He took one last puff of his cigar and let the smoke fly, promptly dropping it and stamping it out with his foot. This greenhorn of a medic approached the ship and entered. His only hope, that the guys on this ship arn't as hard on him about being a rook than the guys at the bars.

"Move, boot dude!" Ran pushed the newly arrived medic out of the way as he ran into the ship, his pack rather lumpy and suspiciously chinking with what sounded like glass. Outside, two vomit-covered police men frantically searched around the port for someone, and soon gave up as they saw several more Marines entering the port to re-deploy. Breathing hard and peeking around the doorway, he sighed in relief and hid again, seeing a very angry-looking Neko girl and her..."chaperone" search for him as well.

"Fucking assholes...just leave me alone already!" As they left, he stood back up and helped the Medic back to his feet, brushing off whatever dust he got when he fell down. "Sorry 'bout that, son. Name's Sergeant Ran." He heaved the pack over his right shoulder and bent down, looking the medic square in the eyes, that mohawk on top of his head looking like some terrible hairy creature ready to pounce. "I hope you're in my squad, son."

With that, he smiled wierdly and ran off to his room.

The Soldier 3rd class stood there, wondering what just happened, and what just talked to him. He shuffled his Duffel Bag, stopped, then looked inside to see if anything had fallen out...

Cigars... Check... Picture... Check... Yummy Yamataian... Check... Assorted Clothes... Check...

He then placed his Duffel bag back over his shoulder.

Hm, squads... The CO of this place should be able to let me know what squad I'm in or if I'm Medlab Personel.

His right eye clacked, then his left.

Where would I find the CO...

Two men introduced themselves to Soreta; as common courtesy demanded, she bowed at both and told them her name. "Could one of you show me around the ship? I need to know my way around if I'm going to be stuck here for the next little while." At least she was a bit more polite than she was with the grunt who interrupted her entry.

The two guards flanked next to her saluted at the soldiers - evidently, they were not of high rank.

On the spread out futon Chris shifted as a message kept trying to get his attention. Grudgingly forcing himself up he looked at the notice with a stern disgruntled look.

Time to go back huh? Well I can't say it is been a fun shore leave. Still I could of at least been allowed to sleep in for a few more hours.

With the complaints out of the way he took his time getting ready to leave, paying extra special attention to his long orange hair. After applying some product he brushed it over and over until it had a nice shiny flow. Finally he added just a soft touch of blush to his checks and headed out.

Arriving at the ship once again met with what appeared to be a commotion.

Oh boy I just love it when things like this happen. Probably some male trying to appear important or one of the dumb-asses avoiding the law.

Valo having carried more then one person back from a bar the night before had just finished cleaning the vomit off of and sanitizing both his uniform and synthetic flesh.

Valo began to make a normal patrol of the halls of the ship. The massive Custodian stopped as the new medic came into view. Valo lifted a large hand in salute "Welcome aboard Sir"

He turned into the direction of a voi-

D-GOH, HOLY SHIT.

The 6'2" Nepleslian stared up at the tall 8 foot custodian droid that had just spoke to him. Needless to say, Kokuten was taken aback by the size of it.

"Er, sir? What do you mean, sir? I'm Soldier 3rd Class, man, but thanks."

Jet Endurain wrote:

Kokuten's left eye shifted in the Nepleslian who mentioned the captain of the ship. Now he was getting somewhere, at least, if this one was sane.

"Me, right here!" Asher said, waving his left hand, since his right was occupied by the Duffel Bag. He rushed forward to keep up with the Nepleslian leading the way.

"Guh!" Fian vel Steyr nearly vomited, his stomach spasms jerked him upright from the bed. The vague memory of the events yesterday and the uncertainty of his present state made his head swim. What the, who the, where the, how th-... #$&@($%&# *Facepalm* .

Karl Vel Styer watched his elder brother sit upright. Fian had been making so many funny noises for the past few minutes that it might have sounded like he was gonna die. Karl rolled his eyes at the anticlimax and rummaged through his pockets, fishing out a packet of tablets that was previously on Fian. "To make things clearer: Take this tablet, and a giant robot brought you back here yesterday night." He said, handing his brother a pill and a glass of water.

Fian took the medicine without complaining. He laid back on the bed with an arm over his forehead, blocking the glaring morning light from the window. F***ing sun.

"I see that you settled in fast on your new assigment." Karl said, crossing his arms. He remembered there was only once Fian had stumbled back like this, in which he promised Karl never to do again.

Fian nodded his head. The elder Vel Steyr could read what his younger brother was thinking. Yep, and I feel so bad that I wanna take whatever that you are going to say next lying down.

"And thats good!" Karl exclaimed, uncrossing his arms.

"?" Fian was in no mood to think of what this meant. He was just about to ignore whatever grouses Karl would have raised about his present condition.

"You are always so reserved towards other people except our family. Its good to see that you have made some friends on board!" Karl said. "I cant look after you all the time now that I'm swamped with work, you know."

A weak smile crossed Fian's lips at his brother's sarcasm. "Bastard. Leave me alone." Were his first (mumbled) words of the day as he Turned over and pulled the blankets, leaving Karl the company of his back. "Let me sleep for half an hour more..."

"Captain, new recruits have arrived and are being escorted by Lieutenant Endurain to your office," Ally's voice spoke from above. "Shall I inspect them for you?"

Miller gritted his teeth.

"What am I, a babysitter," He snapped. "Have the Lieutenant give the recruits a tour of the ship. Tell him to help them find their rooms and unpack so that they can be briefed of our situation at noon in the cafeteria. And where is Lieutenant Wazu? If he's on ship, have him escort our guest diplomat."

With an irritated huff, the Captain resumed multi-tasking at his console. So many things to do, so little time.

~~~
Jet would soon find Ally intercepting him and the line of people he was dragging behind him.
"The Captain wishes for you to handle orientation procedures yourself, as he is quite busy," the beautiful woman said cheerfully, with a slight nod to the newcomers. "Welcome aboard the NSS Alliance. I am Ally, the embodiment of the ship's artificial intelligence. Please use the next few hours to get accustomed to the ship. At noon, we will be having a crew meeting in the cafeteria. Military dress is required."
The woman mentioned nothing of rank, but the silver and black bar on her green uniform's shoulder discreetly revealed her rather commanding position on the ship.
With one final nod, she turned and left, her heels clacking on the metallic floor. She walked with a sexy sashay that utilized her assets to their fullest.
Moments later, she vanished around a corner.
Soreta growled slightly at the artificial woman; it was quite clear that this 'Ally' was a sexualized piece of trash meant to give the Nepleslian grunts some eyecandy...and perhaps give the captain someone to hold in the long nights (something that she would begrudge him).
Yamatai had its own eyecandy AIs, of course, but she didn't like them either. Soreta, just from the expressions on her face, looked like the kind of woman who hated just about everything.
The bodyguards looked to Soreta, who simply sighed. "They know I'm here. They'll send for someone, and if not, we'll have a talk with the captain. We stay here for now."
Ally would come back around the corner in short order, leading a man in a full military dress up to Soreta before disappearing again. The discomfort he was showing upon seeing Soreta was something that you didn’t need to be a telepath to feel. The two soldiers beside her saluted and upon returning the salute he said in a commanding voice, “DIS-MISED!” He then turned to Soreta, “I am the acting first officer. You may refer to me as Sir. I’ve been instructed to show you the accommodations set aside for you and give you a tour of the ship. You’ll be sleeping in your own room separate from the crew and I do suggest you keep your door closed and locked at night. Ally will be keeping an Eye on you while you stay here.”
Jet blinked, noticing Ally's appearance as she gave her message. "Ah alright, yeah not big deal Ally, thanks." He said and gestured to the small group that was following him around. "You guys come on, I'll show ya around like muscles wants." he said and started off in another direction, leading them toward the medical bay first so they know where to go. "It still needs the finishing, if you got questions about, ask about it now." the white-haired lieutentant said briskly.
The medical bay was nothing special but it was well stocked and almsot ready for operation with it is shiny new metal beds gleaming in the light. Most of it was the standard metallic grey color everyone knew, except the padding on the seats were a standard black. With Valo out, there was no medical crew there at the moment. However, engineers milled about the area, bolting in regeneration tanks and other important medical devices as well as other things.
Despite the fact that he seemed uncomfortable with her presence, Soreta was calmed by the presence of Wazu; he seemed to be competent.
"You will call me Soreta. I would like to be shown to my room, first; and I would also like you to inform Ally that I do not want to be watched by her." Slightly unpleasant, but she didn't seem to coat her words with venom with Wazu like she did for the others. "The bodyguards will follow me and take my bags to my room; I have a few things in there I need to unpack."
“You are not here as a soldier in this military and you will not be treated like one. As far as I am concerned you are unranked so you will be treated like any civilian on this ship. Ally will watch you for the safety of this crew and you will be carrying your own bags. If I feel for any moment that you are endangering this ship I will not hesitate to carry out the maximum penalty for such an offence.” At the moment the now dismissed bodyguards were happily leaving the sides of the diplomat as the newcomer and the first officer traded verbal blows. “Now you will follow me to your room If the bags are to much for you to carry by yourself you can come back for them later.” Wazu then turned around and headed towards the room that had been set aside for her.
"Leaving so soon?" Karl asked as his older brother walked to the door. He had just come back with a cup of coffee and a handfull of reports to pour over while they talked.
"Melchoir is busy, you are busy, I am busy, we are all busy." Fian said, putting on his usual green jacket. "I was just told that all the marines are getting recalled back to ship. Would like to stay longer really, but I dont think I have much to tell you since I was here just two darn days ago. Crazy Nerimian FTL technology."
"Ah." Karl took a sip from his mug. "Just dont get youself killed, as usual."
Fian checked his pockets, he tended to drop things when he sat or lied down for extended periods of time, even so when drunk. His Savtech AI Computer was still here, Elsae(The AI) had only earlier relayed the recall order to him. Wallet, ID and Service Pistol check. Then Fian's fingers chanced upon something unusual. He pulled it out of his pocket and laid it down on a nearby mantlepiece.
Karl raised an eyebrow. "A lemon flavoured lolipop? I thought you were too wasted to care. "
Fian laid one hand on the doorknob. "Dont worry, I'm surprised too. Dont tell her I came back, just slip it into her bag quietly or something."
"Elsa probably thinks you are some kind of wizzard." Karl grinned.
"The girl is only 6, Karl. Stop ruining her childhood." Fian waved just once as he left the room. Karl was in the middle of another swig and responded by shaking his documents in which he held slightly below eye level. "Laters, Fian."
"I can carry my bags just fine; thank you, lieutenant, for dismissing bodyguards who are supposed to be with me at all times. You have just overstepped your bounds. ...no matter." Looking at the bags dropped upon the ground, Soreta endeavored to pick them up all at once - somewhat surpried when she found she couldn't. Instead, she gave one of the heavier bags to Wazu, and opened up another - what was apparantly a number of weapons within: A Ketsurui Type 28 SMG, a linear rifle of unfamilliar design, and a traditional daishō set; along with a belt to holster the weapons on. She promptly did so, fishing a Type 29 out of her pocket and holstering that as well.
"As you can see, lieutenant, I am perfectly capable of defending myself, even without my guards. And before you ask, yes, I can use those swords, and quite effectively, too." It almost sounded like a threat - almost.
Benji eyed the AI when she appeared and listened to what she had to say and made note of when and where they were to be meeting and also that they were to be dressed in uniform. He snorted softly and then followed after Jet. Upon seeing the new Medic Bay Benji lightened up a bit, at least they would have some kind of aid if this little trip turned out to be more exciting.
Waiting patiently Benji shifted his pack to it rested over both of his shoulders and rocked back on the heels of his boots, his eyes scanning his orders again. He felt into the pocket of his coat and then found what he was searching for and popped a piece of gum into his mouth and silently gnawed on it, making sure he knew where they were going.
Kokuten eyes clacked as they were shown the unfinished Medical Bay. He looked at what would be where he would spend most of his after-battle time. Though the fact that it was 'unfinished' bothered him, if he had understood correctly, the ship had recently finished a strain of sorties.
"So, this ship was sent out unfinished on it is last mission?" Kokuten asked the Lieutenant leading them.
He was already walking away from her and after getting a few steps away Wazu turned to the side and looked directly at her. He was not there to pick up the bag which she was trying to hand him nor did he make any motion to. He stood still while Soreta worked with her weapon holster. He timed his response to fall right after she said the word Lieutenant, and in a stern voice common to senior officers.
“Please try and keep up. I would like to finish my assignment without delay.”
Upon completion of this sentence Wazu turned back toward the hallway and continued walking. He headed toward the small room that had been converted for her use. Though the panels had been changed to read ‘guest quarters’ no one had bothered to remove the old panel of text which had been placed on the door. It merely was left to lean against the side of the wall, keeping its text “Storage room A-6” hidden from sight.
Chris pushed his way past the marines who didn't follow Jet on the guided tour, and headed down to his room. He did overhear something about a med bay, and was interested to check it out, but since everyone went that way he decided to go the opposite.
I'll just spiff myself up a bit then head to the cafeteria. Everyone probably forgot breakfast to get here so I expect they'll all be wanting lunch.
His stomach growled, reminding him he completely forgot about breakfast too.
Plus I'll make a little something for myself.
Soreta seemed to be keeping up just fine; though the look on her face was one of annoyance and discomfort, and not from the lieutenant. Though the room looked somewhat barren, she didn't expect the comfort of KFY vessels; it would do just fine.
"Thank you, lieutenant," Soreta said...not honestly, though, because she had nothing to thank the lieutenant for. She stepped into the room and placed her bags on the floor.
“I will be escorting you for the duration of the captain’s orders. I suggest you avoid the mess hall and the crew quarters during your stay. I forget the specifics of you body type but you can pick up a large role of condoms from the medbay if you can’t shut of your pregnancy feature. As far as a tour of the ship goes, this is your room, down that hallway is the mess hall and I can show you where the medbay is. This is a military ship, and if you are seen in any area of the ship you will be considered a spy and shot on sight. If you need to speak with the captain make an appointment with him through Ally.”
After his speech, the first officer merely stood at ease just inside of the room given over to the diplomat and while he was done talking for the moment he produced a datapad from inside of his uniform to type a quick message.
Soreta went red. She didn't know if he was being courteous, ignorant, or simply purposefully trying to piss her off, but she didn't care. She immediately took one step towards the lieutenant and backhanded him across the face.
"I don't care what you'll do to me for that, but you do not imply that I am a slut, no matter what! Do you hear me?"
Wazu continued to type and finally send his message while the new diplomat responded to his earlier statements. The message contained a simple request for him to speak with the captain when the time was appropriate.
“I will exchange the word Geshrin for slut when I imply things in the future,” was Wazu’s short reply.
There was an un-restrained giggle from out in the hall. Benji had wandered away from Jet, gettign himself hopelessly lost to find himself eavsdropping on their conversation. With a sharp intake of air Benji put on a mask of stone and then folded the orders and other papaers in his hands and stuck them in a pocket in his coat. He strided right past the door, pretending he hadn't heard a thing.
It took a good five minutes before Benji finally found his room along with the rest of the crew quarters. The first thing he did was change into his uniform and snack on the dry fruit he'd snuck aboard. Pulling out his MP3, he stuck it in his shirt pocket and slid his headphones on. Taking his time he pulled out a skinny book full of papers, some with the layout of the ship on them and studied them. With a satisfied nod to himself he piled everything on his bed and then left for the mess hall.
Matthew couldn't help but let out a sigh as he entered the ship after returning from his leave. He was lucky his father was planetside this time instead of out on a job, allowing the two nearly identical individuals to have some quality father-son time together. Time that involved a nice visit to a neighborhood pub and a few good drinks.
The young warrant officer could only be grateful that he didn't have hangover when he had received the message to return to the ship. With a brief fair well, the younger Lionheart was out of the house and away towards the spaceport.
Now, here he was, back on the Alliance and hopefully ready for the next mission. "Well...at least I'm around a power computer again," he commented as he wirelessly connected to the Alliance's systems to download a status report.
Kokuten broke off from the tour group and decided to find his own room, he wanted to get that duffel bag off of his shoulder. He looked left and right and asked for directions occasionally. The cyborg soon found the crew quaters and quickly laid out his stuff in his room. After double checking to see everything was there, he decided to hunt down the Mess Hall and see if there was something to eat.
These arms use more energy than my body itself...
He reached into his back pocket and pulled out the case of his favorite cigars. Opening the box he pulled out a cigar and lit it, then stuck it to his mouth. He loved the test, and he loved the smell, almost as much as the smell of food.
Kokuten found his way into the Mess Hall and looked around, it was time to meet some new people.
After Rico had received the message from the ship to return, he released a heavy sigh. The effects of his questionable drinking last night still had some undesired effects on his stomach, and he had been hoping to work it off before returning to the ship. After giving himself a moment to regain his composure, he quickly spun around and started towards the port.
“Jeez…guess leave is over for now.”
Rico arrived at the docked ship a bit later than the others, but was there to witness the handful of new recruits being toured around the ship. Rico also heard a few choice words of talk about the new civilian onboard…but not as much as he would’ve preferred. Rico figured he would hear more about things later. Rico also got a good look at the new greenhorns as he passed through the ship interior towards the mess hall. A few of them looked quite young, while a few others looked ready to slit some throats… Rico smiled lightly and gave the few who actually looked at him a friendly nod. After they passed, Rico continued into the mess hall.
Miller's stomach growled. He was hungry, and skipping breakfast left his body feeling like a great injustice had been done to it. Nevertheless, he was pleased to see the fruits of his labor in the form of the near-complete medical bay. The light on his nearby data pad flashed blue, drawing his attention to Wazu's request for a meeting. Without second thought, he approved it and waited for his arrival.
Upon receiving approval Wazu quickly made his way to the Captain, leaving Ally to watch the Geshrin Diplomat. When he arrived his body snapped to attention, "Sir, I would like to make a complaint about the choice of diplomat for use on this mission."
"At ease, Lieutenant," Miller said as he spun in his chair to face Wazu. "What complaint do you wish to register?"
"The diplomat is highly aggressive, confrontational, and even worse than that she is a Geshrin that comes from Yamatai of all places. I do not believe we can be sure of her loyalty, much less her ability to successfully negotiate with the Elysians." Wazu said flatly
"Oh really," came the reply from the Captain. "I haven't had the chance to meet her myself. Is she causing waves already?"
"Perhaps you should have Ally playback the recordings of her arrival for you." Wazu said, easing up his stance a bit, "She arrived with two bodyguards and once I dismissed them she became immediately confrontational and proceeded to arm herself but that isn't what I am concerned about. We are sending a Geshrin to negotiate on behalf of us. Not only is she trained on Yamatai but she carries their mannerisms completely as if she was freshly out of a body bag. As a Geshrin she represents everything that has caused the Elysians problems. Yamataian neglect has destroyed their post-war economy. Their fleet has killed and consumed untold numbers of their people, heir policies have involved them in wars that they probably had no wish to participate in. On top of all of this the diplomatic style that their kind employs is the kind that a conquering nation uses. I do not believe the Elysians will be willing to simply lay on their backs for this."
"You make several good points, Wazu," Miller said, scratching his chin. "But, could it be that this woman is simply on the defensive because she's surrounded by men? Marines, no less. I am, however, as concerned as you are with her being a Geshrin," he continued. "You'd think Command would have more sense than this, but the orders are right here." He handed his data pad to Wazu, which read the order in full. The ship was to escort the diplomat to Elysia where negotiations for peaceful relations would begin. "To tell you the truth, I'm a bit scared that we're going to be shot at the second we enter Elysian space. Free empire or not, we did use to be part of the empire that was at war with them... and we know the consequences of that war all too well."
"I fully believe that she is not acting in an aggressive manor because she is surrounded by men. I have not known their kind to be aggressive for that reason." Wazu took a deep breath as he read the data pad. "This will be an important meeting. One that will set the stage for how Nepleslia will be viewed by Elysia. I can not stand by and let a geshrin represent us. I also believe these orders do not say that she has to be the one negotiating. She merely must be transported to Elysia." Wazu said in a much calmer tone.
"The amount of hoops we'd have to jump through to get this order changed would be tremendous," Miller let out with a sigh. "What are they planning to do--offer the Geshrin up as some kind of ritual sacrifice?" He chuckled at the thought. "But seriously, I can send a complaint to Command, but I'm not sure of the good that will do. If they strike it down, it is up to us to make the best of this bad situation."
Wazu paused for a few moments before saying, "I can think of two options in the event that the complaint is overturned. The orders contain no provision for allowing her to do the actual talking with the Elysians. If we follow the orders to the letter we can let someone else to the negotiating. The alternative to this would be to send someone down there with her to keep an eye on her."
"Knowing the Elysians, we'll be sending plenty of escorts down there," Miller said while crossing his arms. "But who do you suppose can perform negotiations in the place of a trained diplomat? Hell, I don't even know how to address the damn winged things."
Wazu looked down at the data pad and brought up her personnel file. He then looked up at the captain, "Negotiations with a foreign people is not to hard so long as a mutual respect is maintained." He paused for a bit again before bringing up his next point, "Her training was on Yamatai. Regardless of how she was trained I can not believe that it will help her as even if she is well trained she will act as if she is a diplomat for Yamatai not for Nepleslia. On top of this I feel obligated to question her loyalty as she is not a native born Nepleslian."
The captain's brow furrowed on these words, and he thought for a few long seconds before speaking. "As much as our conspiracy theories may or may not hold water, I think it’s in our best interests to sit down and talk with this diplomat, so that you can bring your issues up to her in a place where she can defend herself. The last thing we need is to piss Command off over some wild fox chase." He walked back to his desk and sat on the edge of it, his arms still crossed. "Have you heard complaints from the rest of the crew as well?"
"No sir, I have not. But Ally would be a better person to ask than I. My time has been spent babysitting her since she arrived." Wazu said.
The Nepleslian captain cleared his throat. "I've made a decision. We're going to have a private meeting with her one hour before the scheduled briefing in the mess hall. The command staff will attend and we will have an inquiry of sorts to see if she can suspend our suspicions long enough to perform this mission. Do you have any other thoughts on the matter?"
"No Sir," Wazu said.
"Then inform the rest of the command staff of the situation and have her here at the appropriate time," Miller said as he returned to his chair. "I must take care of the finishing touches of this construction and recruitment documentation. Dismissed." He turned away.
Wazu snapped to attention upon hearing Dismissed, then turned and left to return to his position 'escorting' the diplomat. "Ally, I need you to relay a message to the Command Staff..."
I don't know why I did this...surrounded by distasteful marines, travelling on a virtual garbage scow, and what's worse, that lieutenant is probably snooping around about me. ...well, I did want a challenge, and now I've got one. Those thoughts ran through Soreta's head as she examined her SMG, lying on the uncomfortable bed and half-wishing she hadn't taken this mission. If they aren't incompetent, they're going to be overly suspicious of me. Invasive, even...I suppose, then, it is time to put my talents to good use.
Ally's voice projected into the room. "I can handle your communications needs myself if you would like." The computer began patching her request through, notifying the person in question that someone wanted to talk with them and waiting for their response before making the connection.
To Chris' dismay the kitchen was empty of staff. Either the others had not returned yet or they were somewhere else on the ship. This changed his plans for the meal. If he had to cook enough food for everyone on his own, it'd have to be closer to instant, and boy would it be chaotic. He didn't even want to think about it, having to rush from spot to spot removing this and placing that, but it was his job. With the determination of a mother he set out to begin cooking.
"Rice or mashed potatoes? Hmmm, mashed potatoes should do nicely. Now what should go with it? Remember it is lunch not dinner, maybe rice instead? Ah!!!! First let's pick the main course then plan the side dish. Lunch.. big group of people... no not sandwiches... defiantly needs meat... hmmmm. Tacos! That should do it. With that I can take off the side dish completely. Oh you're so smart."
Adrian stretched as he walked to the cafeteria. He had changed up and felt absolutely froody in his sharp looking uniform. He had some reggae going on his music player. He walked into the large room and looked around, hoping to see someone he felt like talking to.
As Rico entered through the mess hall doorway, he took off his beret and took a huge breathe of the air and released it with a laugh. He smelled food, and it smelled heavenly. Rico looked around at the men already seated, trying to spot a familiar face. No sooner than he had started Rico spotted Adrian moving a bit ahead of him, his ears plugged with his usual choice of music. Rico decided to seize the moment, sneaking up beside Adrian and clapping his hand on his shoulder. "Yo, Adrian! Still got that goofy shit in your ears, eh baby?" Rico spoke jokingly.
Adrian jumped at the hand that smashed him on the shoulder. He popped the earbud out of his left ear and looked cheerily to Rico. "Oi, man. This shit ain't goofy. Where'd you go last night, anyway?"
Benji wandered the halls of the ship, going until finally he found what he was looking for. Arriving soon after Adrian, Benji walked into the mess hall and then looked a good look around. At the moment the techno blasting through his ears could be heard by anyone without their own music players. He walked over to the table and took a seat. Upon noticing someone sneak up on Adrian, Benji shifted in his chair to watch as Rico clapped his hand on Adrian's shoulder. With a heavy sigh he decided he might as well be social and turned off his mp3. Taking the headphones out of his ears he tucked them into his pocket and then pulled out his crumpled Beret and straightened it out before setting it on his head and tugging it down.
Kokuten puffed his cigar, looking at all of the people already in the Mess Hall. With eyes clacking with his blinks, he scanned around to see if he could join any recruits as green as he was. He looked and saw someone who may have been on of those people. The Cyborg strolled over and sat next to Benji, who seemed to be fitting his beret.
"Hey man, you new here too?" Kokuten said, raising his cigar.
Benji looked up at Kokuten and then eyed the man. "Yup, I am... how about you?"
Kokuten scratched his head with a metal hand. "Eh, Just got settled in the room, saw my place of work. Hell, it is not even finished yet. Can you believe that these guys went out with an unfinished medbay?" Kokuten shook his head, puffing his cigar.
Sighing heavily, a red coated lieutenant walked into the mess hall and looked around a bit. "Great everyone's here EXCEPT the dunce that called his meeting as usual." Jet sighed. "But I guess that Miller's busy with his own shit." Jet said as he looked around the grunts. Jet continued to look over the new recruits, stopping to stretched a bit until he popped his back, and went over to take a seat in a chair. He looked over at the newbie’s for a moment but kept silent as he quietly pulled out a data pad and began looking over the layout of the ship for a space to use for the security hub.
Benji turned to see Jet when he appeared and started talking about Miller. With a shake of his head and a sigh he turned his attention back to Kokuten. He sighed and then leaned back in his chair, bored as ever. He considered taking out his mp3 again, but didn't. Instead he prodded Kokuten's leg with his boot.
Kokuten shifted his legs over to the opposite direction of Benji, and puffed his cigar again. "Hey man, watch your legs." Benji let out an evil chuckle and then leaned over and poked Kokuten in the ribs instead.
Rico laughed again, putting his free hand on the back of his head. "You got me baby. After drinkin' all that shit last night, I'm surprised I'm not in a tub of ice missing my kidneys!" Rico swung his head around, trying to look for a free table with some moderately friendly faces. His eyes fell upon two marines having a small conversation. "Common' baby, let's sit with the new kids." Upon reaching the table, Rico caught sight of Fian as he entered, and attempted to catch his eye and motion for him to join them at the table.
Fian checked his watch, although he slept in during the morning he still managed to get back with plenty of time to spare. He walked right up the ramp of the Alliance whistling a tune. He paused for a moment to notice the new arrivals that seemed to be all over the place. Upon reaching the mess hall doors, Fian was ejected into the cafeteria by the insane traffic of greenhorns outside. His hair was messed up and he hoped there were not scratches on his favorite coat. He quickly re-checked his personal inventory to find that thankfully nothing is missing. Catching a friendly wave from Rico, Fian shrugged once to express his current condition and then waved back, making his way to his Cleaning Alcohol drinking friend.
"Hey hey Fian! Plant it here chief, come and meet some of the new guys!" Rico laughed and he and Adrian took a seat in front of Kokuten and Benji. As Rico sat down, he ran his hand through his hair and put on a friendly grin, ignoring Kokuten's complaint. "Hey there baby. Name's Rico. Welcome to the Alliance, Nepleslian ass-kicker number one!"
"Hey man, glad to see that you’re still alive!" Fian said, playfully punching Rico on the shoulder. Fian then turned around to look at Adrian. "And you too! Did the bot carry you back or something?"
"Unless he thought home was a pile of trash, no. We were gonna terrorize the new kids. Care to join us?" Adrian walked over to some of he new guys and grinned evilly at them. "Hola, newbies. One of you the new medic we're supposed to be getting?" He crashed in a seat next to Benji and wrapped his arm around him. "Is it you? Or your buddy? Come on come on, tell me!" Adrian spoke loudly, with a slight mock in his tone.
"Nope, not the medic... I got too much muscle for that job..." Benji said with a meaningful grin at Kokuten. He watched the medic and then shook his head and stretched his legs out in front of him.
"Hey chill out you guys, I'm concentrating on something important here." Jet said, looking over at them out of the corner of his eye.
Just before Kokuten was about to blow smoke into Benji's face, he turned and looked at Rico. He looked to be some sort of suave man. "Er, yeah, pleasure's all mine, the name's Kokuten Gaiasis Chiaki the 5th." Kokuten said, putting his cigar in his mouth and offering that hand for a shake. While holding his hand out, Kokuten looked at the guy who asked who the Medic was. "Nah, this guy's more of a pecker checker, I'm the Doc over here." Kokuten said, with a grin.
Rico cocked an eyebrow at the new guy's name, and after a moment or two returned the handshake firmly. "The 5th, eh baby? You a clone or just a big family?" Rico said jokingly, not really expecting an answer. "This here is Adrian and Fian. Not as good lookin' as me, but they're decent guys."
Fian paused a little again. He was normally a little apprehensive about meeting new people but considering the two of his buddies were socializing, he figured he should go with the herd. The Vel Steyr sat down, took a deep breath and then offered his hand to the two. "I'm Fian Vel Steyr. Welcome abroad."
Kokuten nodded, "Moreover an old Yamataian tradition that my father wouldn't give up." He looked up at Fian who was offering his hand for a shake and replied it with a firm grip. Fian looked at the man in the eye. "Kokuten eh? Good to meet you." Fian expressed respectfully.
Benji turned his eyes to silently study Fian and Adrian and then Rico. "Benji Storm, all muscle no brain..." he said in a flat monotone, shaking no hands. He just kinda sat there, very silently.
Adrian grinned at the recruit. "Hola then. You get to be my bullet sponge." He stood and smashed the medic in the back. The force of Andrian's strike, his body went forward, his head went up, and down went his cigar. Kokuten began gagging on his cigar, coughing harshly as he tried to cough it up. "Oi, didn't they teach you that smoking was bad? Anyway, who else has met that bloody civvie that brought on board?" Adrian asked, his expression turning into a look of slight distaste.
"You mean Soreta?" Jet asked Adrian. "Yeah, whatta bitch." He said, over hearing that comment about her.
"Soreta hmm? Better avoid the lot of us if she wants to leave a virgin." Benji said with a conspirator snicker.
"Oh?" Fian asked, anxious to change the topic. "I just got on board, do tell."
Rico turned his attention to Jet, his attention fully diverted towards the new topic for conversation. "Hey, I heard about that! Heard some talk about her. What's she like?"
"Just ignore her you guys, she isn't worth that kind of attention, and I bet she likes women instead." Jet chuckled, joining in the conversation.
"Whoa-ho! Now I'm interested!" Rico said with another laugh.
"A bitch..." Benji interjected "I over heard her and her escort talking earlier... she’s got some rough vocabulary for a lady..."
"I'd rather shoot her with a few rubbers." Jet muttered.
Fian laughed a litte at the Lieutenants comment. "Heh! We are dealing with the enemy here, we need some intel!"
Benji chuckled at Jet's comment. "Heh, rubber bands and paperclips are more effective..."
"I mean with a riot control bullet nitwit..." Jet sighed and shook his head
Rico nodded as everyone put in their own comments about Soreta, trying to make a mental image of her...it was a little hard without more physical evidence. "Okay, so we know she's a tough cookie. I'm more interested in the looks baby! I'm guessin' Geshrin, right? Got curves in all the right places, eh?" Rico jabbed a rib into Adrian as he made the last comment.
"Not really Rico. Think little boyish." Jet groaned, his distaste for the subject fairly obvious to the rest of the group.
Adrian turned and nodded profusely to Jet. "Yeah, she and her bodyguards are fucking dicks. When I came back here this morning, she's standing there with her two mates, and I ask her if she can just go in and let me in. Her friends looked like they were gonna kill me, and she just bitched at me about how she needed 'clearance' or something…” As Adrian’s voice trailed off, he noticed Kokuten’s sudden fight of gagging. “Oh shit, Kokuten, you all right?"
Kokuten coughed, pointing to his throat, smoke billowing out of his mouth with every cough. "Ci..." He hacked, "...gar!!.."
Fian took in everything with an interest. But the sudden appearance of a chimney that was Kokuten distracted him. "Uh... Medic?"
Adrian blinked at the man in front of him. "Uuuuh. We didn't go over this in school..."
Benji chuckled again and gave Jet a knowing smile and then turned towards Kokuten. He sighed and then got up and curled his hand into a fist and shoved it into his stomach and pushed up. A rough, but effective move. Kokuten grabbed his stomach as what looked like a black turd flew out of his mouth and onto the table. "Mother..." He wheezed... "Fucker..."
"You're welcome Koku..." Benji said shortening the medi's name up. Benji gave a grim smile and then sat down again and relaxed. "Am I the only one here who actually paid attention in school?"
Kokuten raised his hand in response, thumbing ash off his tongue.
Rico couldn't contain his laughter anymore, and as the soggy cigar hit the table, he burst out into a laughing fit. It took him a bit to recompose himself, and wiped a tear from his eye. "Oh man...I can tell you two will get along great here." Rico said giddily as he flicked the cigar off the table.
"Crap, that looks disgusting." Fian said, looking at the piece of cigar that came out. "I'll get you a glass of water." He stood up from his chair and made his way to the dispensers in a hurry.
Shit. Our new medic can't even smoke a cigar without almost dying… Adrian shook his head, but her perked up again as he turned to Benji. "Alright then. Benji, nice move.”
"Kokuten, no more smoking while talking for you...” Jet continued and sighed. "The med bay isn't quite ready yet to remove it from your lungs if you choke."
Benji got to his feet. "I'm gonna go get some food." He said solemnly, getting up and wandering off.
A few seconds later, Fian arrived and set a glass of water down in front of Kokuten. “I would have bought you a beer or something but I'm afraid your insides would explode, you know, hot ash and all."
Kokuten nodded while downing the water, he felt his throat feeling better. Then, setting the water down, promptly stuck another cigar in his mouth and lit it.
Fian looked at Kokuten, who evidently has not learnt his lesson, and sighed quietly. Figuring he needed to check out his bunk before the meeting started, Fian stood up and walked off quickly without telling the people present.
"Oi... Where's Fian going?" Adrian asked as he watched Fian leave the mess hall.
"Yeah, I didn't thank him for the water." Kokuten said as he attempted to spot Fian.
"Ah let him go." Rico said as he glanced over in Fian’s direction. "Wasn't lookin' too hot anyway. Must've had too much to drink last night."
"The lot of you got crocked didn't ya?" Jet sighed with a chuckle. "Makes me glad I didn't go do that."
After that, there was a rather awkward silence, as if everyone was trying to remember what exactly they were talking about before Kokuten’s little incident and two of their table-mates’ quick escapes. Before long, however, Adrian smirked and reignited the previous topic of the table; the new civilian passenger. "Oh, and Rico, Soreta’d probably bite off your dick rather than sleep with you. She doesn't seem to like anyone under the rank of El-Tee. So when you're captain, maybe you'll have a chance."
Rico chuckled at Adrian’s last comment about Soreta, and nodded his head, putting on his smoothest grin and raising his eyebrows. "I'd like to meet his Queen Bitch sometime."
"Oh really?" Jet said and sighed. "I don't like that Geshrin whore personally." he said and sighed, again.
Kokuten eyed Rico real quick, "I saw the chick come in with two ID-SOL's, fucker's carrying doomsday devices too. Don't think she's much for social interaction." He said, throwing down his bit.
"I bet she's banging the ID-SOLs she came in with" Jet chuckled, walking over now that he was done. "Hey mind if I join you guys?"
"Come on over Jet." Adrian motioned to the officer
"Thank guys." He laughed and went over and took the open seat.
"Not at all chief." Rico spoke, patting Jet's back as he sat down.
Adrian leaned forward onto the table, trying to get into a more comfortable position. "I wonder if the Elysians'll eat her or something. That'd be fuckin' sick." He laughed to himself.
Jet shrugged. "They say the one named Nariel uses nekos and geshrin like furniture. Maybe they could find more use for her."
Kokuten's left cybernetic turned in Adrian's direction, his right focusing on the water. "Elysians...?"
Rico laughed lightly at Jet's joke. "Heh, sounds about right baby. Can't think of anything else I can give them Elysians credit for." Rico turned to Kokuten to answer his question. "Yeah, rumor going 'round says that's where we're headin'. Some peace talk shit."
"Yeah.” Adrian added, “I heard some shit about how maybe this chick we have is going to go chat with the angels about something. Not sure about what. But they might get along fine. The Elysians are assholes too."
"Peace talks? Hah, bound to be some sort of assassination attempt while we're there." Kokuten said, focusing both eyes back in, and twirling his cigar with a chuckle, letting smoke loose with every breath.
"I'll take an elysian girl over that bitch any day yo." Jet said collecting a drink from one of the servers passing by. "…but I can't yo, gonna be a dad in a few months." Jet put in and nodded, taking a quick drink from the glass.
Rico lightened up a bit after he heard Jet's comment on a possible father status, choosing to ignore the crude joking he started. "Wow, a dad, huh? Didn't picture you a family man Lieutenant." Rico laughed.
"Must suck not bein' there when the kid arrives." Kokuten closed eyes with a clack and sucked in some smoke.
"Well I just got the mother pregnant while on shore leave so it'll be a while, I just hope Miller isn't such an ass that I can't get leave for it." Jet chuckled a bit. "You guys remember that blonde chef we had? Tall woman, large bust?" he asked. "That's the mother"
Adrian blinked twice. "Wait... just this shore leave? Wow man. Quick worker." He sat back in his chair. "I guess becoming a dad beats the shit out of waking up half-dead in a pile of refuse."
Rico thought back, trying to remember the woman Jet was talking about...however, he had never seen her. "Ah, yeah, I remember...wow, good job on that chief." Rico lied.
"How did the woman deal with the news?" Kokuten queried.
Jet looked at Rico and then to Kokuten. "She was pleasantly surprised really, she'd told me a few times before she wanted a baby." he said, his face turning a bit red.
"Though, back on the peace thing, why would we need to call a peace conference?" Kokuten scratched under his beret. "I mean, aren’t they on the same terms as we are with Yamatai?"
Rico shrugged as Kokuten's question, putting his hands behind his head and leaning back a bit. "Well, I ain't no diplomat, but we're currently kind of in a territory war with the bastards. Sharing space isn't an option when we need all the resources we can get."
"Well we're pretty close to Elysia really." Jet said, picking up on it and pulled the pad out and pulled up a star map with Nepleslia and Elysia highlighted. "See? It’s probably a good idea to make nice with them; perhaps they'll share their tech and supplies with us." He said. "it is a tactically sound idea."
"PFFT!" Rico snorted at Jet's addition. "We don't need anything from Elysia, except maybe some new planets to colonize. If anything, I'm wonderin' why we still tolerate the snooty winged bastards." Rico said venomously.
Kokuten nodded his head, "Well, we need to make more friends than the Mishhu." He then turned to Jet. "But, the Elysians are separated into two branches right? Plebian and Patrician, if read correctly, and the Patricians are the ones who run Elysia. Last time I checked, those guys were a bunch of elitist assholes. Which makes our chances of a 'sharing' relationship unlikely." Kokuten huffed angrily...
Jet nodded to Kokuten, ignoring Rico for the moment. "They are but perhaps we can appeal to them somehow. If not, we'll just cap 'em right?" He smirked wickedly.
"That'd be nice, but what we truly need is more space," Adrian weighed in. "Look at Funky City. The entire Star Army of Yamatai would collapse if they tried to stick a toe in there. We need to disperse that population before we can do anything outside of our little space.” He nodded to Kokuten. "Yeah, the Patricians hate humans. No way we can really accomplish anything with them..."
Kokuten gritted his teeth, if it was one thing he hated the most, it was being looked down on. "I agree with Jet, if the feather wigs don't want to cough up peace, we’ll just give them our stronger side of business."
Rico nodded in agreement as he listened to everyone else, trying to weigh in the situation. He shook his head and smiled after a moment more. "Hell yeah. Negotiations are always quicker if we're pointing a gun. And really, I'm ready for another shore leave whenever I can get one...I haven't touched a damn woman in at least two months, and I was too drunk last night to prioritize."
Jet chuckled a bit. "But negotiations can go sour on the end of a gun." he said. "It’s best to be intimidating at first to show them we're serious. Then if things go to pot then we start doing what we soldiers do best." Jet continued. "Miller'll tell you the same thing and even though he's a meathead sometimes, he's a good dude so listen to him alright?"
"Wait... Why can't we just send one of our diplomats...?" Kokuten said in realization.
"Soreta's probably representing Nepleslia." Jet said. "Or else she'd have gone on a Yamataian ship."
"That's weird thing though, we're sending 'her', and she’d probably moreover say that they need to nuke the shit out of us than represent." Kokuten put out his cigar. "How do you think a war with Elysia would go anyway...?" Kokuten asked again.
Jet sat back, giving himself a moment to think before answering Kokuten. "A war? Well considering it is rumored they have a lot of the same tech those neko-fuckers have, probably badly right now. And the brass know it."
"Yamatai tech? Psshh. The only thing good to come out of Yamatai are those uniforms on the female officers. Can't go wrong with those skin-tight jumpsuits." Rico joked, running his hands along ‘invisible’ curves in the air.
Adrian laughed. "Yeah Rico. Gotta love those."
Jet laughed to Rico. "Indeed, maybe I can get the other girls working as cooks to wear 'em one day for you if you promise to keep hands off."
Rico lightened up and laughed softly at Jet. "Heh, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd appreciate that chief."
"I have an email to send some friends at Kyoto; I've got some pictures to attatch to it too. I haven't written the mail ahead of time, so could you take a listen?" Soreta smiled for the first time since she came in the ship, and seemed quite...diplomatic, with her choice of words.
"Ahem...'Hey Satoshi. I've been spending a few months on Nepleslia, and it is really not as bad as they make it out to be, as long as you stay in the right places. I bought a car while I was there; I had to replace the sparkplugs, but then it ran just the way I wanted it to. I've attached some pictures of my stay, too, I hope you enjoy them. With love, Soreta.' And I have the pictures in a storage device; I presume there's wireless somewhere around here so you can just take a look." Soreta raised a small spherical device; presumably the storage device she referred to.
Ally appeared in Soreta’s room, smiling and sitting down on an invisible chair while pretending to write down her message on a paper tablet. She looked up and answered Soreta with, “Yes, I can download, attach, and send your message and pictures now if you would like.”
"Right now would be great," Soreta said with a slight smirk. "Tell me about the crew of this ship; about anyone who I might be able to talk to without wanting to smash their heads in. Chances are I'll be here a while." Figuring that the AI was female (in theory) and that she might understand her a bit better (despite her appearance), Soreta decided it was best to make friends with the AI.
The meat simmered on the stove, in massive proportions, while the cheese was grated; none of that pre-shredded crap. Various vegetables and condiments were also available to add to the mix should the soldiers choose.
Cooking was sadistically fun in it is chaos at times, and soothingly relaxing at others. Chris enjoyed the rush from one project to another and working with his hands. He enjoyed catering the food greatly, and it was then he realized it was just like the time in the med bay. That thought was very comforting, but he soon realized a more immediate problem.
The ingredients were all there in massive quantities, as per the supply, but there were no pre-made taco shells. That was the one thing he was willing to have pre-made since making the shells himself would take quite awhile. It was time to improvise.
"Well everything's fine except the shells. Guess we'll go with burritos instead."
And with that he began making the rolls.
"The crew is mostly Nepleslian or ID-SOL with few exceptions including your self." Ally replied as she processed the message, checking the picture for microdots on orders of the first officer before transmitting the data. “A few of the cooks are good natured and get along with just about everyone but the serving staff and marines have a history of discontent between each other.” Without breaking pace Ally continued to her next piece of business, “If you do want someone to talk to the captain has called yourself and the senior staff to a meeting which will be starting soon.”
The cooking was finally done and the food was laid out. It was in a self serve manner, starting with the burrito rolls they would move down the line adding what they wanted starting with the ground beef and ending at the sauces. His work complete he yelled out to all the people waiting on food.
"Get your food and quit your bitchin'!"
Benji, who'd wandered back to his room, walked back in through the doors. He had his headphones stuck in his ears, with loud techno (sandstorm) playing. The sleeves of his shirt were rolled up, showing the metal of his mechanical arms. He took a sniff of the air and then looked over and low and behold there was food. Of course he didn't hear Chris tell them to stop bitchin.
Following his nose, he strided over and helped himself to a burito. After filling it full of meat, cheese, lettuce and a thin layer of sauce, he rolled the whole thing up and scarfed it down on the way over to a half empty table. True, he had almost no manners, but he was a marine and that was his excuse. If he was hungry, he was gonna eat. It didn't really matter how or what or where. Of course not realizing that Chris was a girly man didn't make things any better.
The bathroom was filled with a deep, booming "HOARRRGHH!!" and the sound of a heavy stream of vomit filling the bottom of the toilet bowl with cloudy, red and orange bits of food, as the bowling ball in his stomach became a bit lighter. "Uh, fuck..." He breathed rather heavily, his throat physically hurting from vomiting for over five minutes. His cheek on the relatively clean rim of the bowl and his hand gripping it, he spat the last bits of vomit out from his mouth and showered, cursing the bartender who sold him the last bit of high-proof liquor.
"Fucking bullshit..." He muttered to himself, not bothering to put on the top of his uniform. It was too damn hot for him at the moment, anyway, so he resorted to wearing a white wife beater while talking a nice little walk down the decreasingly wavy and wobbly hallways of the NSS Alliance, ignoring the salutes from lower enlisted men and frantically saluting any officer he met on his way to the cafeteria. "If that fuckin' sugar-tit caretaker gives me any shit..." He muttered to nobody in particular, just the two boots that hit the floor every time he stumbled.
Fian sat in the bunk for a while, putting back some of the things he took with him on shore leave and taking out a fresh uniform from his locker. Along the way to the showers he answered some polite questions from the new arrivals, who now seemed to have lessened in the corridoors and are now settling down. Along the way he choose to stop by the new Medibay to take a look.
Having waited till the excitement over it had simmered down, the Vel Steyr had an unobstructed view of the medical room and its shiny apparatuses. He looked at each of its equipment and tried to guess its function. A small smirk made its way across his lips. Hmm, I wonder if they have anything for that Red whose face I caved in.
Fian gasped and caught himself. Something inside him said that it was wrong. But he had it comming, yes. The bastard bought it upon himself. The Vel Steyr quickly shut everything from his mind untill he turned on the shower knob, hoping that the hot water will wash away more than just the dirt on his body.
Still no sign of the rest of the kitchen staff. The only thing worse then cooking by yourself for a large group of people was the dishes after. Fortunatly aside from the pots and pans used for the cooking, only a tray was needed for the soldiers to eat off of. Another benefit of having burritos. Chris made a burrito for himself, all the while staying in the kitchen.
"Seems I'm gonna be stuck in here for awhile."
Kokuten strode over in the line, and picked up a tray and loaded some food on it. He was glad to have met some of the crew, now he didn't feel like a stranger.
Some of these guys are pretty weird, but hey I just coughed up a cigar, so what.
The Cyborg took his tray over to one of the tables and sat down to eat.
AFter a little bit a young girl with brown hair and blue eyes stumbled in a bit sleepily. "Sorry, I overslept." She said, this was Ayumi, the youngest cook, but also the most talented. She had a unique creativity when it came to large meals. Soon after her, her older sister Rin came in, she had lighter brown hair with green eyes and her skin was a bit darker in color. "Well I tried to wake you up." she said to the girl as she walked in. "oh hello"
His feet kicked up a tiny dust storm as he hurried to the ship in port, hoping that he wasn't all too late. He cursed at himself inside his head for not getting up earlier, he was never late. He practically charged up the ramp him and his two small bags having multiple near-misses with other people. As he finally reached the top of the ramp, he took a second to slow his breath. He had been in such a hurry to catch up that he hadn't really been able to take a look at the ship, but now he was inside it. Slowly looking around in awe, he completely lost track of where he was. He dropped the small duffel-bag in his left had and slowly ran his fingers along the metal making up the walls, almost convincing himself that he could just feel the strength of the ship by touching it. He gathered himself and his dropped bag as he began to walk through the halls, not really knowing where to go. He had heard there was an advanced AI on this ship and hoped that it could give him some directions. So he looked up tentatively towards the ceiling and spoke a little nervously.
"H-hello, ship's AI? I am looking for my quarters and current instructions. This is Gran Keats, Soldier Third Class, Technical Sentry."
A young blonde haired woman with green eyes appeared in front of Gran, her female Nepleslian uniform and short green skirt hugging her body as spoke, “Hello Gran, I am the Avatar of the NSS Alliance though the crew has taken to calling me Ally.” Her face held a soft smile to accent her cheerful tone, “I’ll show you to the crew quarters, Please follow me.” She made a quick turn, causing her skirt to lift up slightly before turning her head toward Gran and saying, “You should also introduce yourself to Sub Lieutenant Jet Endurain when you get the chance. He has been put in charge of handling the newcomers during my stop at the station.
He had been expecting a disembodied voice to descend from somewhere on the ceiling, so needless to say he was quite surprised when the beautiful female materialized right in front of him. He dropped the smaller bag in his right hand as he jumped a little, a few screws spilling out of it. He stared for a split second, amazed, before quickly looking down and tending to his dropped bag, hoping that Ally wouldn't think him rude for staring. He couldn't help but watch her as she turned, his mind and body in conflict over the reality of this woman: she was a hologram, but she was right there in front of him. He quickly stood up, picked up his bags and cleared his throat as he followed her.
"Thank you... Ally. Um, that's a wonderful name."
He smiled as he thought about how glad he was that the ship's representation was something more personal than just a voice that emanated from the shadows. Thinking more about who he was to report to, he continued.
"Sub Lieutenant Jet, where would I be able to find him?"
Rico spent a good while sitting in the Alliance’s mess hall doing absolutely nothing. The rest of his group had either quieted down to eat or sauntered off to pursue their own agendas, leaving Rico feeling a bit left out. He didn’t feel hungry, and with the free time before the captain was expected to make a statement, Rico decided to take a stroll. He had always felt better walking…felt it gave more justice to his good looks.
“Eehh, I’ll catch you guys later. I’m gonna take a walk…”
His leisure stroll wasn’t turning out any better…just a few new guys here and there. Nepleslians, ID-SOLs, the usual fare. However, upon reaching the corridor to the crew quarters, Rico spotted something interesting heading in his direction; a regular looking Nepleslian, sporting a set of curly brown hair…and the look of a new recruit. However, Rico was more focused on the figure leading the greenhorn; a shapely Nepleslian woman in full uniform, blonde hair, and a great stride. Rico was quick to remove his beret, and ran his hand through his hair to straighten it out, taking a sharp glance at a reflective panel of wall to make sure it was in order. As the two groups neared each other, Rico stopped in front of Ally, putting on a relaxed smile.
“Hey hey…haven’t seen you around here before.”
Rico hadn’t ever seen Ally’s physical representation before. He hadn’t really paid attention to the crew when they talked about her, either. In truth, Rico figured this female figure was the infamous Soreta his buddies were talking about, since the rest of the crew never gave him an actual physical description of the new diplomat. Rico kept his eyes on the blonde while stepping behind her a bit, and put his hand on Gran’s shoulder, speaking to him in a low voice while pushing him lightly to the side.
“Mind if I speak with your lady-friend here for a sec, chief?”
After that, Rico turned his full attention back to Ally, moving in front of her again and leaning against the side of the corridor slightly, always smiling. Ally made a motion to speak, but Rico was quick to cut her off before he had his say.
“Well now. I don’t think we’ve met before…name’s Rico. I’m gonna take wild guess…you must be Soreta. Am I right?” Rico asked, trying to flash his most amorous smile. It was then that he actually noticed the Lieutenant pin on her uniform...although, he figured he'd worry about that afterwards.
Ally stopped in front of Rico and smiled good naturedly, “That is a great guess but I’m the ship’s avatar. Soreta just left the bridge and I will be happy to introduce you to her if you would like.”
She then turned slightly to look at Gran, “And thank you, I will have to pass on your compliment to the one who named me. Right now Jet is on the bridge but I believe he will be heading to the mess hall soon.”
Rico quickly brushed a free hand through his hair again and chuckled, apparantly not convinced. Although, Rico thought her voice was vaguely familiar.
"Can't say I've heard that one before. So, if you're not Soreta, care to give me with a name to go with that pretty face? I thought I heard the new kid call you Ally-"
Before Rico could finish, he heard a small snicker behind him. He turned his head a bit to catch a glance at who it was...two marines a bit farther down the hall. When they saw Rico looking at them, they both burst into a fit of laughter. Rico didn't know whether to laugh with them or be annoyed by the interruption. Finally, Rico turned the rest of his body a bit to address them.
"Hey guys, common, we're kinda havin' a moment here." Rico said making a slight gesture towards Ally.
"Rico, that's the fuckin' ship AI, ya dumb shit." One of the marines said in-between his giggles.
Rico gave them a funny look for a few seconds, his brain processing the situation. He turned back to Ally and stared at her for a few moments with a quizzical expression sprawled on his face, before picking up his hand and stretching it out towards the center of her chest. Of course it went straight through her, to Rico's slight surprise, and he quickly retracted his hand and flexed it a bit. There was an awkward silence in the hallway for what seemed like years to Rico. However, gathering his bearings as quickly as possible, he cleared his throat and put on his flirtatious smile again.
"You know, I always said you were a very beautiful ship."
Gran was too well absorbed in looking over the interior of the ship, marveling at it is sometimes simple, powerful grandeur, to notice Rico approaching. He almost stumbled a little as Rico edged him away.
"Huh? Uh... I guess."
He had quite a confused look on his face as Rico spoke with Ally, and he was about to correct him when Ally spoke. He then smiled at Ally with a 'You're welcome' for the compliment and a 'Thank you' for the information on Jet. He looked back at Rico, wondering who he was and why he seemed so interested in this Soreta... He smiled as the marines hassled Rico and he stuck his hand into Ally. He wondered how she felt about him doing that, or if she felt at all.
Benji who had suddenly decided to stalk Rico [ Very Happy ] listened to this with not even a flicker of emotion. He was well aware that Ally could probably sense he was there, but he really didn't care. After Ally's last comment Benji was hit with a wave of un-controllable laughter. He was still giggling as he walked out from where he'd been standing and over to Rico.
"So Ally, so true..." Benji said, followed by more giggles. He put a hand on Rico's shoulder and tightened his grip so that he was pressing against a pressure point in the man's shoulder. After he was sure Rico's shoulder was numb, he let go and put a hand on Gran's shoulder. " 'Nother Greenhorn eh?" he said and then gave Gran a hard pat on the back. "Good, after you've put your stuff up, go up to the mess, self serve buritos and the captian's eventually gona come down and talk to us." He said and then looked over at Rico, "Dude, get a life... a REAL social life... and AI's don't count..." He looked at Ally "Catcha later..." and walked off, back towards his room.
Rico slouched and rubbed his shoulder, mumbling a few choice words at Benji as he wandered off. After he was out of sight, Rico felt another awkward silence settling in, and turned back to Gran and Ally. He relaxed a bit and straightened up, putting his hand in his pocket and laughing shortly before speaking again.
"Well. Guess I owe you a dinner then, eh sweet cheeks?" Rico said with a grin. Rico then turned his gaze to Gran, his eyes sizing him up for a second or two. "Tell ya what baby, I'll do you a favor and take the new kid on the dime tour." He said, quickly reached around and pulling Gran foward, then slinging his arm around his shoulder. "After that, we can talk about your rules on wanderin' hands in more detail. Sound like a plan cutie?" Rico joked, shaking Gran lightly as he spoke.
Gran was a little surprised as an explosion of laughter preceded another person joining the already growing pow-wow. As Benji came over and grabbed Rico on the shoulder, Gran almost cringed a little knowing how uncomfortable that grip must have been. As Benji addressed him, Gran nodded his head with a small smile, proud to finally be serving his people. He lurched forward a little, definitely surprised, as his back was hit. He smirked and thanked Benji as he informed him about the waiting food. As Benji walked away, he leaned sideways to Rico and whispered:
"Betcha he's jealous you got to her first."
Gran didn't know whether Rico was actually flirting with the AI or if he was just out of his mind.
"Umm, I don't know. I mean Ally is the ship's AI, she surely knows every part of the ship down to a nanometer. But if Ally wanted to do the specs and locations and you the hangouts and fun stuff, I guess that'd be pretty nice. Unless, of course, you don't want to or if you have something else to do, Ally."
Rico listened to Gran talk, a bit surprised by his manner of speech. Shit, this guy sounds like he's about to piss himself... Rico thought silently to himself. Never the less, after Gran was done talking Rico turned back to Ally and puffed his lips into a false-pout, trying to look as sickeningly sad as possible.
"Yeah, unless you got somethin' else to do, Ally." Rico said, trying to imitate Gran the best he could.
Rico laughed and whirled Gran around, his arm still tightly slung around Gran's shoulder. Before Gran could say another word, Rico started walking, bring his poor friend along for the ride.
"You heard the lady! Let's start with our beautiful luxury suite, just down the hall!"
Gran gave a little bit of an incredulous look at Rico as he could tell he was being mocked. Was it wrong, or at least unnatural, for him to hold women in such high respect? As Ally encouraged him to go with Rico, he almost questioned the decision, but this train of thought was cut short by Rico still clamping onto him like an adjustable spanner. As he was whirled about, his bags swung a little in the air, straining to not spill their contents. He followed Rico's step as they traveled down the hall. He turned his head to take a quick look back at Ally.
"Thanks and I guess we'll see you later"
He then looked forward smirking, trying to show Rico that he wasn't a tight-wad.
"Does this 'luxury suite' happen to be a small room occupied by 40 other men?"
After half an hour of scrubbing and primping, Fian exited the showers spanking clean and in a freshly pressed uniform. He re-straigthened out his shirt and dusted his pants again. Ahh, feels like I'm born again. He thought. Satisfied, he looked around to see if he anyone in the area could compare to his current tidiness.
Comming down the hallway was Rico and another newbie. The more muscular nepleslian was completely roughing up the new arrival. On top of that, the Rico-Davis complex was swaying left and right due to the uneven distribution of weight. Fian grimaced, he didnt want to be involved yet, not in this pristine state.
He silently took four steps back into the shower room, closing the sliding door and hoped he was not seen.
"40 sweaty, smelly, muscle-bulging sons-of-bitches, if ya gotta ask." Rico laughed.
Rico was a little relieved when he saw Gran lighten up, and slowed down his pace. They walked quietly for a few moments, and as they neared the bunk area Rico stopped at the door. He then released his shoulder-grip and offered a hand to the new arrival, smiling in a friendly manner.
"Name's Rico, chief. Marine. Sorry if I rubbed you the wrong way back there...got an image to keep up, y'know?"
Gran smiled at Rico's comment, and he had guessed the same was the actual truth. He looked up and noticed the foot of the person retreating back into the showers. He decided to ignore it, since he was kinda focused on relieving his arms of their baggage, which seemed to get heavier every minute. As Rico released his shoulders, he rolled them around a little, jokingly making sure they were still functional. He gently set the bag in his right hand down, and smiled as he shook Rico's hand firmly.
"Gran Keats, Technical Sentry. No problem, I understand. So, is this your quarters too? Or am I in this mess by myself?"
He finished with a smirk.
"No shit, a gear-head, huh?" Rico said as he released the handshake. Rico took a quick look around...just two marines snoozing quietly on the farther end of the room.
"Yeah, I sleep here too...sleep being a very loose term; can't sleep for shit with the snore orchestra you get sometimes. Just throw your junk on a bunk that doesn't smell like ass; those are taken." Rico joked, laying on the bed behind him, casually crossing his propped-up legs and putting both hands behind his head. "Just tell me whenever your done unpackin' baby. We probably gotta stop by the armor and lauch bays on the way to the mess hall. Gotta show ya where you'll be workin' and all. Afterwards I can introduce ya to some of the guys." Rico smirked, turned his head straight and stared blankly at the sky above him. He waited patiently for a few moments, his eyes glued to the low ceiling while he listened to the silent rustling of Gran unpacking, the snores of the sleeping marines continuing behind the scenes.
"Yeah, a gear-head that gets shot at." Gran replied, laughing a little to himself.
He browsed bunk to bunk for a few seconds, not daring to take the advice of testing by smell, before settling on one that was across the aisle from Rico, thinking that he could get along with him quite well. Gran grimaced sarcastically.
"They all smell like ass."
He proceeded to set his bags on the bed. He pulled a palm-size, half-inch thick, rusty gear out of the smaller one, placing it on the metal of the bunk above him, a small magnet on the back securing it into place. He looked through his bags, stuffing a pencil and a small notepad in his pocket. He didn't really have anything to unpack, so, sliding the bags to the foot of his bed, he stood up shortly and leaned on the post of Rico's bed.
"Well, I'm done. Ready to go?"
Ran's cigarette glowed orange in the inky blackness of his room, barely lighting up the already over-stuffed pack that lay at the edge of his bunk. News of his transfer had come rather late, and without really giving it any thought, Ran walked out of his room, past the enlisted men's quarters and to the Captain's quarters. His intention was to say goodbye, but it was a rather bad time, and he was sure the Captain would do well to replace him.
And walking from the NSS Alliance, he took a look behind him, biting down hard on his cancer stick. "Don't fuck up, guys." He said outloud, strangely thinking his squad mates would hear him, as he walked off.
Adrian stepped into the bunks thrashing on an air guitar in some similarity to some blasting tune on his headphones. The medic's eyes were closed, and so he didn't see the newer recruit until he literally smashed into him. The 6' 4" soldier tripped and hit the deck, blinking several times.
"Wooah. Sorry, mate." He stood quickly and brushed himself off. He stared and the guy for a second before realizing he'd never met the man.
"And what do ya know? You're a new kid," Adrian smashed him on the shoulder. "I can see you've met my buddy Rico here. I'm Adrian Decane, I push your guts back in after the kitties tear 'em out." The medic held out his hand and grinned widely at Gran.
Gran nearly fell right on top of Rico as the large medic ran into him. He turned around quickly, seeing a person face-down on the floor. He stood stunned as he stood up and introduced himself. "Gran Keats, Technical Sentry I fix the guns that shoot the kitties." Gran took the handshake firmly.
Rico sighed loudly, and quickly sprung up from the bed with unbridled energy. He quickly pulled his beret from his pocket and placed it on his head, grinning as he watched Adrian and Gran shake hands. He then quickly reached past Adrian and clasped Gran by the shoulder, motioning him up. "Yeah yeah, hugs all around. I'm takin' Gran on the tour...catch ya later baby." Rico laughed.
Gran jumped a little as Rico grabbed him; he turned and nodded to Rico. "This guy promised me a tour, I'll catch up with ya later, 'kay?" He waved and took one last look at his bags, making sure he had all he needed at the moment.
Fian waited for ten, maybe twenty seconds until he thought he heard the last footsteps fade away. He exhaled a long sigh and wondered if there was anyone out there, if only he had that neko six sense thing. The Vel Steyr pulled out the card shaped hosing that held Elsae from his pocket and held it at face level. "Are they gone?" He spoke to her. "Unknown." She replied in a serious voice befitting the current situation. "I cannot access the ship's wireless network from the shower block." Fian sighed again. "It is however heavily implied that Soldier Third Class Rico is intending to show Soldier Third Class Gran Keats the layout of this Nerimian Destroyer. I suggest we remain stationary until it is statistically proven that they might have left the area." Elsae continued. Fian pulled a face and remained where he was, trying to think of an alternative course of action.
Just as they were about to leave the doorway, Rico's ears perked up at a peculiar sound coming from the showers. He could barely make out the words, but he knew what he heard; a woman's voice. Without bothering to let go of Gran, Rico whirled around and headed straight for the shower curtains. He hesitated for a moment before putting on a sly grin, and ripped the curtain open, only to be met with Fian's surprised face. Rico leapt backwards with a yelp and closed his eyes, holding a hand to eye level to shield himself from such horrors. "G-Holy shit Fian! Are you naked? Please tell me you're not!"
Gran started to reach for something in his bag as he was nearly ripped off his feet by Rico. He stumbled a few times before he gained his footing back and was about to ask what was going on. His face paled a bit as he was dragged into the showers and was about to curse as Rico ripped open a curtain. He mimicked Rico's shocked movements to the letter. "Whoa! Are you outta your mind!?"
"Ack!" Fian shouted, he nearly dropped Elsae from the shock of suddenly encountering Rico. He hastily pocketed her while his ambusher was momentarily blinded. "No-no, I'm good." Fian stammered, unable to craft a proper response both from the shock and from the slight aerial juggling action of storing his Savtech.
Rico slowly opened his eyes, trying to keep them as high on Fian's body as possible. When he saw the hem of Fian's uniform, he signed loudly and loosened up. "Jeez...my bad baby. I thought I heard...uh..." Rico quickly flitted a look between Fian and Gran. "Err...nevermind." Rico was silent for a second or so before brightening back into a smile. "Hey Fian! You're just in time, I was gonna take Gran here on the grand tour. Feel like taggin' along?"
Gran's eyes opened slowly and took in a well-suited and pristine marine. He half-relaxed as Rico invited Fian to their little ship party. His mind began to have doubts about taking on Ally's recommendation of having Rico show him around, he had practically dragged him throughout the ship so far. He smiled at the one Rico called Fian. "You should come."
Fian tried not to look distressed, he had enough of the Greenhorns but he did not want to disappoint Rico either. Who knows? It might be fun anyway, and that new kid looks kinda decent. He put on a small smile and started "Well, I ..."
"Good!" Rico said loudly with a grin, and grabbed both Fian and Gran by the shoulder. "Let's start with the command deck." Rico said, leading them out of the doorway. Adrian was still standing at the bunk, watching and wondering what the previous commotion was about. Rico smirked and waved his head towards the doorway. "Common Adrian, you're commin' too."
...could- *Ugh!*" Fian grunted, within a short few seconds and some grabbing, he was now in a position to realize that Rico was not wearing any cologne under his armpits. Welcome to the Star Army of Nepleslia, Fian. Resistance is futile.
Adrian nodded and grinned. "Of course. We can't break in a newbie without medical attention nearby, right?" He walked briskly out and followed Rico with a smirk. He stuck his arm out, pointing down the hall. "Onward! To victory!"
>>>>> A few minutes later, outside the bridge doorway...
Adrian hung his arm behind Gran's neck and looked him square in the eye. "Aight, it is time for a run down of the crew. There's me, Fian, n' Rico, we're the pimps in space here, you need something, come find us. As Rico said, el capitan can be a little dickish, but he's pretty tight." He looked at the other two marines. "You guys, help me with this."
Rico smiled as they reached their destination; a large closed door, clearly labeled Bridge. He reached over and shook Gran lightly to get his attention. "Yeah. So, this is the Command Bridge. Us marines won't get to see the inside much through, unless the captain calls ya." Gran had been looking at the walls and various doors and panels on them when he was jarred back to attention. He blankly nodded as he noted the location. Thinking that the only time he might be called there would be for reprimand. "So, you met the captain yet Gran?" Rico asked, keeping his eyes on the door. "Nice guy...bit of a tightwad to me, but better than most."
Gran continued to look at the door and shook his head ‘no.’ He smirked as he looked at Rico. "I bet everyone's a tightwad compared to you." He laughed a little at Fian's obvious enjoyment of their quest so far and restricted himself from rolling his eyes at Adrian, as he smiled widely. "Got it."
"Now this is exciting." Fian said, sarcastically. Although he had not been inside, he knew how it looked like inside from the holomaps Elsae and shown him before his first mission. Fian continued after Adrian. "And then there is the all female cooking staff at the cafeteria." He thought that there was something wrong with that statement but continued anyway. "Its the only place you get to see real ass on this ship, other than Soreta's room that is." Rico laughed at Fian's comment. "Damn right! We have a few fine lookin' ladies working in the kitchen. Though I don't think you should get near 'em...Captain's got some tin can keepin' an eye on 'em. Custodian droid I think. Other than that, yeah, you're not gettin' much action here baby."
Adrian chuckled. "A. One of those caretakers is really a guy. His name is Chris. He's a little sketchy, but he can cook alright. B. Soreta would most likely sick her ID-SOL buddies on you if you went near her room."
Gran smiled as the guys ranted about the other passengers on board, especially the women. He grinned as he turned to Rico, teasing. "How 'bout that Ally huh? You seemed pretty interested in her not too long ago."
Fian sucked in his chest and roughed up his voice in is best imitation of Rico. "Shes a freaking hologram." The Vel Steyr then did some thrusting motions with his arm. "No resistance, no sale."
Rico's smile drooped a bit, and he quickly peeked back and forth between Fian and Adrian. He chuckled slightly and tugged and the colar of his uniform a bit. "Uhh...yeah..." Rico gave Gran one of those 'drop it' looks, and started stuttering trying to form a solid reply.
Adrian cocked an eyebrow. "The ship AI?" Adrian burst out laughing.
Gran's grin widened considerably, seeing this as his chance to push back at Rico, if only playfully. "Yeah, man you were all over her. I saw it all." He even stuck his arm around Rico as he pulled em close. "You keep swingin' slugger, I'm sure you can reprogr- I mean seducer her sometime."
Rico's sarcastic grin was quickly turning into a sarcastic grimace as he tried to explain his situation. "Uh..." Rico said quietly, his eyes dancing between the other three marines. "I was...just sharpenin' my skills. Gotta keep them workin' for the real deals, you know?" He laughed, silently hoping they bought his excuse.
Fian halted his motions after noticing Rico's distress. He put a hand on Gran's shoulders. "I think thats a conversation of another time, yes." He then twirled the newcomer towards the direction of the armor bay hallway and gave a slight push. ."I'm sure you'll derive more pleasure from the Power Armor bays, thataway."
Rico sighed and gladly followed behind the others as they continued down the corridor. Rico shook his head and thumped his skull a few times. Pull yourself together dumbass. "Besides! What's the difference, huh?" Rico said jokingly, taking a false stand with renewed confidence with a sly grin. "I mean, looks like a woman, talks like a woman...that's nearly everythin' I need baby."
Fian's suspicions were confirmed. He flashed a killer look at Rico and put his right hand into his pocket.
>>>>> 10 minutes later, at the Power Armor bays...
"Alright then! This is our supremely sweet power armor bay. This is where you'll probably be spendin' the day baby..." Rico said, spreading his arms out in front of him as they entered through the bay doors.
Gran's eyes looked like they were nearly about to pop out of their sockets. He had seen just about each of the models in training, but those were beat-up, rusty and overused. These however, were the top of the line, at least most of them, pristine as the day they came out of the factory. Completely oblivious to Rico, or any of the other marines for that matter, he reached out his hand and slowly walked to the closest armor and played his fingers over the access panels and plating. "How many of these are there?" He said without turning his head.
Rico laughed lightly and jabbed Fian with his elbow, cocking an eyebrow at Gran's sudden interest. "Well, depends. Nerimian shit is made on the spot in those things..." Rico lifted an open palm towards the assembly machines farther in the room. "...but these NAM suits are always together. Good pieces of work, too. Can't wait to fuckin' pilot one."
Fian Vel Steyr was startled by the new addition to the Power Armor bays. He was not so interested at Gran's obsession but more to what was being obsessed over. NAM suits. Its like Melchoir handing me a gun and asking me to shoot someone. But Fian was curious anyway. He walked right up to the Power Armor and touched it gently with one hand, trying to feel his elder brother's intention.
Rico's eyebrow raised a bit higher as he watched Fian move up to the armor and begin to feel it. He smirked. "And you assholes were hasslin' me for touchin' the damn AI." Rico said loudly. He shot a quick glance to Adrian, holding out a hand towards the other NAM suits. "You want a moment alone with the armors too baby?"
Adrian was smiling slightly deliriously. "Heh. Shiny." He shook his head. "Woooah. Forgot my meds this morning. I'll meet you guys in the cafe in a while. I don't take my meds I go batshit." Adrian then quickly whirled around and started towards the main elevator, holding up a hand to signify a quick farewell.
Fian was unsure of his own feelings, so he turned towards Gran and asked. "Do you like it?" Gran simply smiled as Rico teased, he didn't care, and Fian spoke, he still did not turn his head from the armor. "it is like touching the power of a god." Fian looked away at Gran and back at the Armor. Then he looked at Rico and Adrian who was leaving. "Um, Rico, I think I need some time alone here. A personal moment. I'll get back to you when I'm done."
Almost immediately after Adrian made his exit, Fian also expressed his desire to stay in the armor bay. Rico sighed and nodded, noticing a bit of sincerity in Fian's voice. "Well...shit, fine. Common Gran, we got a few more stops before we're done." Rico said, quickly grabbing Gran by the shoulders once again and pushing him out the bay doors. "Jeez...wonder what Fian's beef is." Rico said as he and Gran continued down the hallway.
Gran knew the grab and pull was coming, he didn't stumble as he was jerked back to reality, but kept his fingers on the cold, powerful metal for as long as he could.
He took one last glance back at Fian and softly smiled before turning back to Rico. "Beef? I don't think it is that, I mean those things are the most incredible pieces of work put out by human-kind, how can you not have a respect for them?" He sighed softly under his breath as he quietly and solemnly said "Melchoir Vel Steyr you have given power to men that we could never have imagined."
Rico's head perked up a bit at the mention of Melchoir Vel Steyr. The name sounded very familiar to him. "...Melchoir Vel Steyr...you mean the head at NAM?" Rico suddenly remembered, his eyes focusing and unfocusing at empty space while his head processed. Gran smiled and his eyes widened with even more interest.
"Yeah, you know him?"
"Nah..." Rico said. As they neared the main elevator of the ship, Rico shot a glance back at the armor bay corridor, a quizzical look strewn across his face. "You know, Fian's last name is Vel Steyr." Gran's eyes wondered towards the ceiling as he followed Rico to the elevator. "Fian Val Steyr" He muttered slowly. He smiled as his eyes softened a little when he thought of Fian's wish to stay in the power armor bay, and compared his face to that of Melchoir's he had seen in a news article. "I would say they share some resemblance, do you think they could be related?"
Rico decided to ditch the serious face, and laughed loudly as he patted Gran a few times on the back. "Well hot shit, we know a fuckin' billionaire! Wonder if Fian can hook us up with some of that cash NAM is pumpin' in." Rico joked, quickly hitting the button on the elevator as they both stepped in. The lift quickly brought them to the second deck, and Rico took a deep breath before stepping out. "Right then. That way is to the crew quarters...just a buncha flyboys and the cooks. And the new diplomat." Rico then quickly pointed in the other direction. "And THAT way is to our five-star slop bin. Shall we?"
Gran smiled a little as Rico slapped him and they entered the elevator. He couldn't help but be serious for a few more seconds as he thought of the implications. "A billionaire..." He spoke lowly, thinking deeply. As the elevator opened and they stepped out, Gran smiled brightly. "Well you guys keep talking about this diplomat, but I think I might starve to death if we don't get something to eat first."
"Yeah, some dignitary the main command sent us for some Elysian peace-treaty shit. I hear she's quite the ice queen." Rico said with a sly grin. "But, I've melted colder women before, eh baby? Let's get you some chow."
John leaned quite comfortably back in his GI bunk and sighed happily.
"I Guess the ladies just aren't used to booze around here."
John looked around for the sarge, getting up and wondering about, he came across Fian, getting him in a headlock and nooging him.
"Nice doo!"
He chuckled and walked off in the direction of the Training room.
After a half hour or so of chatting around with the other marines in the mess hall, Rico decided to take his leave and head up to the recreation area for the VR simulation.
'...wonder why Fian didn't say anythin' about bein' related to Melchoir?' Rico thought to himself as he quickly punched the elevator panels. He watched the lights between the crack of the door appear and disappear as the elevator ascended. 'Pfft, hell, it is not like everyone doesn't have their own problems,' Rico dismissed nonchalantly, and hastily resumed his famous grin as the elevator door opened.
When Rico entered the Recreation room, he was surprised to see a few people already relaxing and killing time there. He planted his back to the wall next to the door and shot a few glances and nods at a few of them as he waited for the rest of the marines to file in.
Valo decended into the VR Simulation room. Part of the reason was to ensure no serious injuries went unchecked during the training and yet at the same time Valo felt compelled to watch a combat situation. Even if it wasn't real.
Valo knew it was a pointless decision and yet he still stayed motionless. Even for a machine old habits seemed to die hard.
Fian ran his hand through his hair. Not that he really cared about combing, but after being jumped by John and Rico before that, he figured that it would be in a total mess now instead of the organized ruffle that he liked. Geezus, I'm getting too comfortable here, letting my guard down too much.
The Vel Steyr filled in some forms at the bay administration to have a more through look see of the new NAM Power Armors. The engineer in charge handed him a manual and was reading one himself. "Dont cha turn it on or move it or anythin'." The grease monkey said. "Non of us know how to fix it if ya cause any trouble."
Having already examined the external components of the M1-2a AIR Power Armor, Fian stood on the side of it by stepping on its oversized skirt armor which was parted wide as the mecha was kneeling. Takes up quite a bit of space. He noted. Finding the pickup microphone near the neck of the machine, he wispered the authorisation provided on the forms. "User guest. Password default." He rolled his eyes at the obviousity.
The neck of the armor pulled back and the chest of it lurched forward in a few short seconds with the sound of vented gas. The insides of the armor was well lit by a few white luminous stripes. Fian instantly noted that the crotch level needs to be adjusted before the pilot jumped in but that was not what he was looking for. Ally's announcement reminded him that he did not have much time. Casting a bit of manly pride away, he flashed a look at the manual he held in his hand.
Reaching in with his other hand, the Vel Steyr opened a panel under the neck. Pressing the depression that was revealed, a metallic card shaped housing was ejected. Etched on the surface was the words 'Savtech Slot and Combat Data Storage." Carefully placing the manual on the AIR's shoulder, he pulled out Elsae with his free hand and slid her into the housing and replaced it into the depression. "Find out anything you can, I'll be back later."
"Close." Fian whispered, and the AIR closed itself back again with another hiss of vented gas. Checking his gold watch, he calculated his available time and started jogging to the VR room, obvlious to the presence a small red dot on the mecha's shoulder that eyed him as he left.
Gran had been enjoying the tacos set up by the caretaking staff, as he was finally able to get something to eat. He got to know a few of the other marines that he had sat by. He had quite a good time, even though he didn't talk a whole lot. His mind still wondered back to Fian and the armors every once in a while, he would have to try to talk to him about that at some time. He began to scarf his food as the announcement came calling for VR training. He quickly hopped up along with the other marines at the table and stashed his tray, his mouth still full of food.
As he entered the recreation area, he looked up and around at the many others in the room that he still didn't know. He slowly walked around, cooling down a bit from his rapid jog as he awaited further instructions.
Istvan entered the Rec-room room, bouncing as he walked, and sat on the center floor, performing some warm-ups. He was new, but he wasn't insecure. He was confident, and self-assured. He was having a good time showing off his flexibility and strength with the "warm-ups" as he waited to be told what was happening... He wanted everyone good and intimidated, as he desperatly needed "Mojo". He was not going to be bottom of the pecking order here.
Anyone who looked carefuly, though, would notice the tell-tail signs of usage of "Big K". Istvan's palms were sweaty, and his iris's were contracted. He was "High" on some of his stimmies.
Kokuten wiped off the food from the tips of his metal fingers. It was pretty good for standard ship food. His cybernetic eyes trailed around the room, his left one looking in one direction, his other one going in another direction. When he heard the announcement he gathered up his waste, cracked his neck, made his arms do a quick whir of gears to make sure that there wasn't something stuck inbetween them. The Cyborg stood up and walked to the trash can and dumped the trash in, promptly dropping the tray in it is proper place.
The Medic then dropped into the recreation room, taking note of the load of equipment and the few Neps already in the room. He saw one Nepleslian jacked up, supposedly on some sort of stimulant.
I thought those were for combat situations, my instructor always said those things cause a case of Supersilo...
He then noted a rather curly haired Nep catching his breath, the cyborg decided to keep to himself. It was his moment to smoke, and with that, he whipped out a cigar and lit it.
The newly-medicated but still quite mentally unstable Adrian strode into the room with a slightly psychotic glimmer in his eye. He saw Kokuten lighting up his cigar and clicked his tongue.
Told him not to smoke...
Adrian walked stealthily up behind him and grabbed his left shoulder before smashing a foot into the back of a kneecap and using the one remaining hand to go for the cigar.
"Come on Kokuten, remember what happened last time you smoked?"
Rico, who had been watching silently on the wall behind them, quickly stepped in and snatched the cigar from Adrian's unsuspecting hand. He stepped back a bit and flashed a mischievous grin, then took a big puff of the cigar, letting the smoke flow through his nostrils as he watched their expressions.
"You're one to talk baby. How much fuckin' medicine did you take this mornin'?" Rico said with a laugh, coughing ever so slightly at the powerful aroma of the cigar. He then tossed it back in Kokuten's direction. "Let the man have his smoke baby, anythin' to make this VR sim a bit more fun's okay by me."
Istvan noticed the fighting over the cigar. He snorted softly to himself, and quit the warm-up stretching to walk over to the group. He almost bounced as he moved, and there was some twitching going on, though whether that was because he was on "Big K" (or just because he moved that way normally) was hard to tell.
"I don't recognise you," he said, his slavic features making his broad grin look warmer. "My name's Istvan. Nicotine doesn't have all that much kick, I really would advise other things."
Benji appeared a bit later, not listening to a thing anyone was saying or doing. He had a long cable in his hand and was wearing his trench coat over his uniform. Benji seemed almost distracted from what he was doing. The big man took a look around and then walked over to a chair where he could easily kick back, relax and plug himself into the system. He sat down and then took one end of the wires and stuck it into a small outlet on his arm.
He shivered lightly when he felt the connection. With a small sigh he reached down/over and plugged himself into the ship and felt a cool, clamness wash over himself. He produced the needle that he'd tucked into his belt and then carefully stuck it into a vein on his neck and injected the stimulant. With a careless half wave, half salute he closed his eyes and put his head behind his head. he passed out minutes later, his mechanical parts taking over and waiting for the sim to start.
Kokuten straddled as everything happened, first he lost his cigar, then he got it back, then he gets an introduction. There was only one thing Kokuten could do that seemed right.
Puff.
Puff.
...
Puff.
After he got that flow he got his balance as he tripped away from Adrian, keeping his left eye in his direction, just in case. He then gave a 'thank-you-salute' to Rico and then extended a hand to Istvan, his right eye following in that order.
"Don't recognize you either, Kokuten Gaiasis Chiaki the Fifth." He nodded and continued. "I smoke cause it tastes good, and anyway, I wouldn't recommend stimulants for work out sessions, sometimes causes a case of Supersilo."
Adrian grinned malevolently. "Well, Rico, I took... uh..." He scratched his head "I forgot... no matter! Anyway, I can see we have another young crew member," The medic motioned to the large marine. "Istvan, is it? Sweet name. My name would be Adrian." He held out a hand, keeping it out even as his body gave a slight but rather noticeable spasm.
Gran had been wondering around the rec room, looking at the equipment and talking to a few marines. Most of them seemed pumped up and ready to go, he himself was a little nervous. He heard a small commotion going on behind him. He turned and recognized Rico. He walked over realizing that one of the marines seemed a little to happy for his own good, and another one that looked way off his rocker. He walked over, but kept his distance, not wanting to involve himself, but wanting to know what was going on.
Rico quickly took of his baret and ran his hand through his hair as everyone shook Istavan's hand. Rico himself instead chose to wave his hand, giving Istavan a small smirk as he introduced himself while he gazed up at the tall Nepleslian. "Name's Rico, baby."
After that, Rico turned to the other and relaxed his smirk into a good-natured smile. "So, you guys ready for this? All psyched 'n' shit?" Rico said in a sarcastic tone. "I'm hopin' to try out one of those new NAM AIR models...those things are fuckin' beasts! If any of you guys are in my squad, just try not to fuck up...I've had enough guard duty to last a few years, know what I'm sayin' baby?" Rico said with a laugh as he slapped a friendly hand onto Adrian's back.
Istvan shook each of their hands back with a nod. His grip was firm, but not crushing. "Pleasure to meet you. I need the stimmies... They keep me calm," he said to Kokuten.
He turned to Adrian. "Your name is also sweet."
He noticed the shakes. "Got the shakes? Eh, I do too sometimes when I don't get my stimmies..."
And to Rico he responded to the wave with a nod of the head, his eyes glinting.
"Don't worry about guard duty, it can always be worse. I've been in the Nepleslian army for three years and haven't been promoted because I was never anywhere near a major battle.... Fucking up can be taken for granted, but I'm fairly sure your squad can minimize damage."
Valo wandered the room looking at the men preparing to enter the training simulation. He was running surface diagnostic scans on the soldiers as he passed them. The scanners in his eyes shifted focus between the men quickly . While Valo could not force them to skip the training it wished to make sure they were all physically capable of performing without further injury after the last conflict.
"Minimize damage?" Rico repeated, his cheeks slightly filling with air as he resisted a burst of laughter. It didn't do him much good, which became apparant as he let it loose in a quick guffaw, throwing his head back as he did so. "No offense chief, but this is a VR sim. I've been playin' these things when I was fuckin' five years old, and I plan on enjoyin' this."
As he finished his statement, Rico flipped his beret back onto the top of his head, straightened it, and turned a bit towards the front of the room where Lieutenant Wazu was standing patiently, Ally standing a few feet to the side. Any time now, old man...
Kokuten scratched the hair on the button of his chin, while smoking up the rest of his cigar.
"Hrm, I've never used a power armor before." Kokuten said, his right eye on Rico, and his left checking out Gran real quick, then back to Rico.
"I was mostly taught small arms and syringes." The medic shifted his Medic strap into an outward position, then puffing his cigar.
Istvan stiffens at Rico's statement, his smile staying, but the rest of his face looking like it was trying to slide away. "Try not to taunt Murphy." he says "Maybe it is just me, but taunting murphy seems to lead to bad situations." He smiles thinly.
He too is ready for the simulation to start... he may be a bit superstitious, but on the other hand he was still alive...
