Fujiko IV

It had been 9 months since the events of the Norian Arrival spooked the leadership of the Fujiko Development Corporation into developing plans on how to better spread the Reds beyond their current place of exile. While they certainly had no interest in fighting with the Greens anymore, Reds being free to do what they wished seemed like the best middle finger they were going to be capable of flinging at them in the end. Initially plans were just to start expanding out into the former Samurai Military Sector and towards former Yamatai claimed systems to re-establish colonies in the face of the Kuvexian Remnant. While those are certainly still the primary goal, seeding reaches of space far beyond the Kikyo Sector became another primary goal.

While they certainly had adequate scientists for their cloning practices and engineers skilled enough at designing/building ships, the Nepleslian Reds were hardly renowned as explorers. But they were renowned for being pirates and much of the initial skill sets were much the same. Instead of using it to hide from the consequences of their nefarious deeds, those old skills were going to be the foundation for a new class of "warrior-scientists" as the Athena Foundation liked to pitch to the FDC's board of executives in meetings.

While work on the seedships that would be used to fling humanity in the form of the Reds back into the greater universe from the Kikyo Sector progressed, they were going to need to determine where they were going to send them to to hopefully flourish. A number of requests were made to the Scientific Studies Service Astronomy Department for star charts and studies by a group of young Athena and Hermes Type Reds calling themselves the Fujiko Exploration Corps. Too technical for the FDC to properly manage, they decided to place them under the Athena Foundation for operational control until the Fujiko Self-Defense Force was established.

It had been weeks since they had received the star charts they had requested were given to them. But they were still not close to figuring out which areas they were going to focus sending pathfinding teams to. It was already determined that they were looking to neighboring arms of the Kagami Galaxy or deeper to the "north" to sufficiently move far enough away from everything to stand on their own two feet. They knew there were likely to be a number of failures in the process, but that was the only way they were going to grow and learn in their opinion.

They still needed to determine where exactly they were going to go explore and hopefully expand into. Sun Horatio, CEO of the Fujiko Development Corporation, getting tired of not getting answers to that he picked 5 random people within the Fujiko Exploration Corps and directed them to finally come up with one.

The lucky "committee" members chosen were:
* Nadia Bao, a recently created olive-skinned female Athena-Type FSDF science advisor
* Richard Smith, a mocha-skinned male standard Nepleslian FSDF science advisor
* Angel Nkomo, a coal-brown skinned female Athena-Type FSDF science advisor
* Michael Guleria, a pale-skinned Hermes-Type linguist
* Kayla Flynn, a brown-skinned Raijin-Type FSDF infantrywoman with interests in exploration thrown into the mix for some reason.

Nadia Bao, with her eyes alight with the spark of curiosity, viewed the mission as an opportunity to expand humanity's knowledge of the cosmos. Michael Guleria, whose heart beat with the rhythm of languages lost and found, saw it as a chance to decode the universal lexicon of interstellar diplomacy. Kayla Flynn sought to prove that they were capable of conquering the cosmos much like their ancient ancestors once did. Richard Smith harbored a grudge against the recklessness he saw in youth on Kennewes, his journey fueled by a search for redemption in the stars. Angel Nkomo, pragmatic yet secretly dreamful, hoped to find solutions to questions she alone had.

Fujiko Self-Defense Force Headquarters

Fujiko IV, Shenhong City

In the sterile, dimly lit of a conference room in the Fujiko Self-Defense Force Headquarters on Fujiko IV, the atmosphere was charged with a blend of anticipation and fatigue as the 5 discussed the meeting's agenda. As the hours waned into the fifth hour, the atmosphere in the conference room had thickened with a mix of determination and exhaustion.

Nadia Bao, her olive skin almost luminescent under the room's artificial lighting, leaned forward, her tired eyes scanning the data that sprawled like a digital tapestry before her vision. Her fingers danced over the volumetric keyboard, pulling up charts and graphs from requested SSS data. Nadia's focus was unyielding, her mind a maelstrom of calculations and possibilities. She had been the quiet voice of reason in the room, her pointed contributions often steering the conversation back to the scientific underpinnings of their mission. Despite the fatigue that shadowed her features, her enthusiasm for the potential discoveries lay undiminished.

Richard Smith, his mocha skin contrasted by the faint glow of the display, adjusted his glasses, a silent signal of his growing impatience. The room's tension seemed to gravitate towards him, his presence as commanding as his experience. Richard's criticisms were sharp, a reflection of his high standards and deep knowledge he learned over the years. Yet, beneath his stern exterior, there was an undercurrent of excitement, a spark ignited at the thought of what lay beyond their known universe. His laughter, though rare, broke the monotony of their deliberations, a reminder of the camaraderie that underpinned their collective endeavor.

Angel Nkomo, stationed slightly apart from the group, her posture reflecting a calm resolve, watched the exchange of ideas with a thoughtful gaze. Her contributions were fewer but impactful, the weight of her words felt by all. Angel's insights often cut through the complexities, offering clear paths forward. Her demeanor was a bastion of stability, her coal-brown skin a contrast against the sterile environment of the conference room. In moments of doubt, her steady voice provided the reassurance needed to press on.

Michael Guleria, his expression betraying a hint of weariness, tapped a stylus against his lips, contemplating the linguistic and cultural implications of their choices. Michael's perspective was unique, his focus on the potential for communication and understanding with any civilizations they might encounter. His contemplative nature added depth to their discussions, his contributions a reminder of the broader implications of their exploration. Despite the fatigue that etched lines into his pale face, his passion for the unknown was palpable, a guiding light in their deliberations.

Kayla Flynn, her demeanor as steadfast as her military background would suggest, was the embodiment of determination, ready to venture into the unknown for reasons known only to her. Her dark eyes were alight with the prospect of discovery, her posture unyielding as she listened and waited for her moment to steer the conversation.

As the clock marked the tail end of what had been a grueling five-hour long meeting, the weight of their responsibility hung heavily in the air. The room, usually buzzing with the sounds of technological interfaces and soft murmurs of collaboration, had grown increasingly tense. Ideas had been proposed and dismissed, potential destinations analyzed and rejected, and the shadow of their mission's significance loomed ever larger.

"What about SSSC7119?" a Kayla Flynna asked her group of "volunteers". The tall brown skinned woman with dark eyes and dark brown hair was similarly dressed as the others: a white and onyx uniform used by the FDC science and engineering staff. The Type 45 Technical uniform consisted of a somewhat form-fitting white and onyx high collared jacket, onyx trousers, boots, and the Megumi Environmental Skinsuit that comprised the underlayer of many FDC uniforms due to the chilliness of Fujiko IV.

"You proposed that already and I tell you yet again calculations show it is too close to the Kuvexian region for comfort." A massive man with glasses, Richard Smith, replied back with annoyance. "Just admit that you only picked that green nebula because it makes you want to find some Green sympathizer again." he said, laughing with some annoyance thinking about when he found her talking to some Nepleslian in NSMC swimwear at Ternifac when they attended Summerfest. "You know perfectly well we have orders to keep away from anyone remotely Nepleslian Green."

The Kayla woman just humpf back at him in response, wondering why Richard can't let that incident die. Michael Guleria just rubbed the bridge of his nose. Listening to these two bicker like one of those old couples seen in the "human familiarization" productions for the last 4 hours. "We need to give the Board of Executives something or they are going to recycle the lot of us, hoping that the next iterations are less defective."

Angel Nkomo simply walked up towards the volumetric display and studied the incomplete galaxy map unseen by the others, but currently displayed within her vision. "Why don't we just first find a path of pulsars that the pathfinders are going to be using to navigate? Not figuring that out first seems like a really stupid way of doing things." she said in an attempt to refocus the group.

Without a word, Richard looked over towards the large volumetric display located in the center of the room and mentally willed it to display the information they were able to request or gleam from academic papers about their local area within the galaxy. Compared to the maps of the suspected appearance of the Kagami Galaxy, the projected information looked rather incomplete.

"Autumn Jade, display all known pulsars." he said, starting their analysis. A small holographic woman appeared on the edge of the volumetric projector's field. Dressed in what looked like a form-fitting qipao, amber colored AI construct reached up towards the incomplete galaxy map with two fingers. Spreading the two fingers to the side, all known pulsars appeared on the volumetric display as pulsating blue dots.

"Those over by that arm of the galaxy can be removed from consideration." Richard said as a number of pulsars disappeared close to the Kuvexian region. Another group closest to the Kikyo to the south and southeast were also eliminated with a flick of the wrist, he just had a hunch it was too close to something unpleasant.

"Wait stop, what about SSSC5718?" Nadia Bao finally said. As connected to the display as the Richard, a visual image of a red nebula appeared. A list of detected stars within or in proximity of the nebula was displayed next to the image.

"257 M Types, 275 K Types, 128 G Types..." Nadia continued to read out the exact numbers the SSS had discovered. The FDC's astronomers would have to verify with their limited equipment, but there was little reason to doubt the SSS's work. "Most are younger than a billion years of age, but there is bound to be promising candidates to colonize there."

"I think I see where you are going." Richard said as he looked closer. "A.J, make an overlay of the straightest path along the pulsars from here to SSSC5718." he said. The calculations didn't take long as the path displayed itself. While there were a few right angles within the path, the line was almost straight.

"Using quasars from Galxies 877C, 9232F, and 223C should help further refine navigation is for reason there is an issue using the pulsars." Autumn Jade said before turning to the gathered members. "I don't know about you all. But that is a beautiful place for some exploration." she remarked with a smirk.

Richard, with a nod of approval, signaled the end of the meeting. His gesture was more than a mere procedural formality; it was an acknowledgment of the ground they had covered, both intellectually and emotionally. As the participants began to gather their belongings, a silent understanding passed among them.

Edge of the Fujiko System

After the meeting Richard Smith had been selected as the commanding officer for the expedition to the region of space SSSC5718 occupied. Given priorities in building up the Fujiko Self Defense Force, he had resigned himself to having to make the journey in the smallest ship and crew they could reasonably expect to complete the task. Much to his surprise, the FDC seemed far more serious about the expedition than he expected. Instead of a single scout ship, he had been given command of the Mizumoto Class FDS “Spirit of Pioneering” (SoP) and 2 Red Hope Class Light Cruisers (FDS “Furious” and “Bravery”) plus an assortment of small craft, corvettes, and heavy corvettes.

Richard looked at the assembled ships from his position on the SoP's command deck. He couldn't help but not think of his time in the Reds' final defense fleets during the Kennewes Offensive. Then, as of now, the bridge was full of eager young officers moving about and conducting their activities. Each ready to conduct their job to the fullest of their abilities when they watched the ships of the Greens get closer to the effective firing range of their ships, himself being one of these such officers.

But unlike then, the challenge was not to survive against the Nepleslian naval juggernaut but the mission would not be any easier. Never before have the Reds conducted such a task, too busy over the centuries fighting against their bitter rivals for reasons lost over time. Who knew what dangers known and unknown would be waiting for them during this journey. But for a Red, that was part of the fun. People to fight and knowledge to conquer, that was the way of the Fujiko Red.

"Captain, receiving a hyperspace message from the FDS Redbeard. Waypoint 1 is clear of hostiles and they are currently holding position with HyperPhase engaged." the ship's XO announced to Richard. Waiting for the all clear, he snapped back to reality. It was time to get things going, they were not going to be back for awhile.

"All Hong elements, prepare to initiate jump." Richard said.

From the command deck, no one could initially feel anything. But quickly a sense of "wrong" began to grip less experienced members of the crew as the fabric of reality begun to wrap as energy poured into the hyperspace generator as the hyperfold mantle started to form around each of the task force's ships.

As the final checks were completed, Richard allowed himself a moment of introspection. The weight of command sat heavily on his shoulders, yet it was a burden he bore with pride. With 3,300 jumps calculated by the eggheads at the Fujiko Exploration Corps to reach their target area or roughly 62 days of non-stop jumps. But Richard had a gut feeling that it was going to take much longer do to unforeseen issues they are likely to encounter. The path is close enough to the suspected path the Kuvexians took to get to the Kikyo Sector, the Mishhu were mobile again, and much of the space around the Kikyo Sector was still largely unexplored. Though before he could think about who unknowns might be out there, the XO's voice cut through his thoughts,

"All systems green for jump, Captain."

Richard nodded, his gaze sweeping over the bridge. "Orange Sounding." he said, initiating the FSDF's standard warning for crew members of a immediate hyperspace jump. Normally hyperspace jumps is a smooth transition, but when you are dumping a massive amount of energy to end the very fabric of space/time, anything could happen.

Once the klaxon pattern was audible on the ship, he continued. "All elements, initiate jump on my mark... Three, two, one, mark!"
