Since escaping the wormhole the day before, the heavily dented, burned, and pockmarked YSS Resurgence had been limping around the Second Fleet's battlefield performing minor rescue operations and support for the mop-up operation. The Mishhuvurthyar were back with a vengeance and had unexpectedly given the Star Army of Yamatai a bloody nose for leaving the Kikyo sector. It unsettled captain Aoba and as he oversaw his ship's efforts he couldn't help but wonder the implications of a galaxy that might contain more of their archenemy, the Mishhuvurthyar, than anyone had previously imagined. It was as if they were being supported by an outside factor that had fueled their regrowth and change. Due to the extent of the damage, the ship would likely be in repair for some time once they arrived home, but for now Aoba felt it best to render whatever aid he could.

Down in the ship's wardroom, chef Rossa had put out one of her famous breakfast spreads, and the dining area smelled of steamy fresh eggs, salty bacon, and freshly brewing ground coffee. The crew who didn't work all night began to rise and show up for food in a hodgepodge of duty uniforms and exercise uniforms.

YSS Resurgence - Wardroom

Okimi practically bounced into the wardroom, a ball of enthusiastic morning energy. This was helped in no small part by the fact that Poppy had cleared her for duty less than an hour before. After being forced to spend a couple of days recuperating from her own foolishness, the caretaker was more than ready for a change in both pace and scenery. Okimi had only stopped at her quarters for a shower and to change into a fresh uniform before heading out and was now feeling like a new woman. Looking forward to breaking her fast, as well as hoping to meet some of the new crewmembers, the wardroom had been her very next thought.

She quickly and efficiently put together a breakfast tray, offering a quick "Thanks, Rossa-Heisho!" to the chef, before looking around to see who else amongst the crew was present that she could sit with. Okimi knew most of the crew by sight, but couldn't say she knew everybody yet, so hopefully there would be new people to get to know so the caretaker could start turning them into friends.

Wardroom

With her eyes trained on the datapad balanced against her palm and thumb, Mineko didn't look at much else in the room save for the morning spread. When she got to the serving area outside of the galley, her blueish red eyes hungrily flitted up from the pad and went down to the offerings. She smiled, a wan expression that was mostly a self soothing measure and less of an expression of genuine happiness. Tucking her pad between her jacketed arm and torso, she moved away from the food and pulled a warm mug from the tray. Idly, she poured herself a cup of black coffee and tucked back into her reading as she trotted up the stairs to sit in the more unused second story gallery section of the wardroom.

Only when she sat down did she take a moment to set down her datapad and look around the room below as her fingers gripped her mug and she sipped her coffee. The analyst looked at the people that had been in battle just yesterday and the people that had supported it, like Okimi and maybe even Rossa. These people all fought so hard, but it had only barely been enough.

Her eyes went down to her pad once more but this time they were glazed as she thought about what she had been working on. The Mishhuvurthyar had shown intense tenacity, almost equal to what Mineko's fellow Yamataians had fought with. As scary as their drive was, the enemy's passionate resolve wasn't anything new. It was those abilities she had bulleted in her report to central intelligence that were, though. And it was those abilities that made her look worriedly down at her compatriots now.

Mineko took a lasting swallow from the coffee mug and set it aside then picked up the datapad with two hands. Her focus had shifted back to her report. Back to anything she could do to help stop the worst from happening. Whatever the Mishhuvurthyar were doing, it was her job to inform Star Army Intelligence of what they had done.

Sleep was light this time. Flashes of the battle kept playing over in her head. Yoko shooting down missiles and the bombers attacking the Renaissance. Dueling with the enemy PA. Being glad time and time again that she chose to put starship-grade shields on her Mindy and extra armor in exchange for her mobility and area of effect weapons. Stepping out of the Power armor bay to blast away boarding pods. Nearly getting launched into the void by a torpedo. Watching the Rippers land and hosing the group down with Aether rounds to keep them off Mineko's hide. And the ~-RUSH-~ she got when she battered one of them down in melee and let her shoulder mounted weapons melt the unlucky Ripper. It was exactly what Yoko had sought when she requested transfer out here. She rolls over in her sheet, warmly humming her satisfaction at the memory.

Alas, she knew better than to express that. The successful retrieval of the Wakaba had led to the discovery of the 2nd fleet's remains. Not that it was destroyed entirely of course, but she felt it would be a long time before it came anywhere close to its normal strength again. In fact, once she had breakfast and a short respite, she was assigned to escorting the retrieval shuttles to and fro along the wide field of wreckage. Salvage what and who they could and all... Grim, but even that couldn't really damper her high spirits. Besides, the Star Army of Yamatai had enough dour types.

A short shower later and a minute to pull herself together, she made her way out to the wardroom to obtain breakfast. Admittedly her small patrol craft at her previous assignment was... limited on such niceties. This was a full warship though. And the extra crew meant certain perks for doing their job well. The smells that hit her as she enters was one such thing. A deep inhale and a happy sigh escape her lips. The raven haired neko approached to assemble her breakfast. Though she had to look up to the chef, she gives a warm smile and a simple "Thank you, Heisho." She had admittedly been all business up to this point. Had to be, this was a big and important posting. Had to be sure she didn't look bad in her superior's eyes.

H
appy with her selection, she wastes little time in finding a seat and digging in. Voracious for such a short woman, but she clearly remembered that she was infantry. Not an officer with fine dining. Gotta eat and get moving, even if she didn't actually have a pressing assignment waiting for her. Training still had a hold on her behavior.

Haunted by visions of writhing tendrils entangled in chaotic heaps, and diminutive grubs bearing vicious fangs, Erika's dreams were a battleground of nightmares. Academic papers and field reports on the Mishhuvurhtyar played out like a grotesque conglomeration of reproductive technogothic and eldritch cosmic horrors. What was theoretical in her mind just yesterday was now made manifest, but they still retained an intangibility. Synthetic beings themselves, warped reflections of the NH series, perhaps there but for the grace of the empress walked her.

Then there was the other side.

The tang of adrenaline when her life was threatened, the intoxicating surge of elation when she downed one of them tapped into something primitive within left by her creators. In her operative training Erika was taught methods of manipulation, social engineering, and assassination. The implication had always been that any mission she undertook would likely tread within ethically ambiguous hues. As mentioned, there was some tragedy with the Mishhu, but if anything, that made killing them easier. The only brand of co-existence they would entertain was one Erika found utterly unconscionable. Their extermination was logical, a simplicity that brought no small measure of comfort along with a wicked smile to her lips.

Her answer to these racing thoughts was the Dojo. Here, she could strike, surge, and sprint, shedding the weight of her thoughts through the kinetic rhythm of physical exertion. The skip rope was a deafening roar to anyone sharing the space. The skip rope was a deafening roar to anyone sharing the space. Only once she felt she was once again at her baseline did she leave for the Wardroom, tossing a comfortable hooded jumper over her sweat damp sports top before heading out.

Crew Quarters

Yoshiro was wide awake and getting dressed for his duty shift. He had been exhausted basically from all of the fighting and rescuing the Wakaba from the Mishhu. He fought hard, but now he could relax. He stood up and went to the wardroom to get some breakfast and think about what to do.

Hallways

So he jogged lightly on his way to the wardroom to get some breakfast and some coffee. Had to work up an appetite, after all. He stepped inside the wardroom and got some food.

Wardroom

He grabbed some bacon and eggs with some toast. He got some coffee with two creams and two sugars and sat down. "Okimi, how are you doing?" He said as he sipped some coffee. He ate his breakfast with gusto as he talked to Okimi.

YSS Resurgence - Wardroom

Before she could find a seat, Okimi received a quick update from the Resurgence MEGAMI with a confirmation of her work schedule now that she was officially cleared for active duty once more. The caretaker quickly reviewed the information, missing Mineko's arrival while she was distracted, before mentally logging her acknowledgement and acceptance of the schedule. It seemed a lot of fuss for what essentially boiled down to pulling extended shifts for the next five days to allow Julia Meadows some extra down time, but that was only fair after her fellow caretaker had taken on Okimi's workload while she had been stuck in the medical center.

Returning her attention to the occupants of the wardroom, Okimi spotted a stranger and quickly surmised that she must be one of the newly transferred crew that had arrived aboard the Renaissance. Her first impression was that the darker-skinned neko was definitely one of the shortest of her kind she had ever seen, although she certainly seemed more muscular based upon how her clothes fit to her body. The stranger also seemed intent on devouring her breakfast as quickly as she could, so Okimi decided to introduce herself before she could finish and leave. With a smile on her face, the caretaker approached the soon-to-be-friend.

"Hi there! I'm Fujikawa Okimi, one of the Resurgence's Caretakers. Welcome aboard!" Not wanting to give the new arrival a chance to refuse her welcome, Okimi slid her tray onto the table and sat opposite Yoko. She picked up the cutlery, using the fork in her right hand to hold the bacon whilst she used the knife to slice it into smaller strips. "How are you finding the ship, is there anything I can help you with?"

Before she could ask any further questions, Yoshiro arrived at the table and turned the duo into a trio. She nodded at the Jôtô Heisho's greeting. "I'm well, thank you for asking Yoshiro, and glad to be out of the medical center so I can get back to work." She nodded at the new crewmate opposite herself. "I saw a new person and decided to say hello. Judging from the cornflower blue panels, she's one of our new combat specialists." Okimi turned back to the green-eyed neko. "That's right, right? Yoshiro here is one of our valiant defenders, so I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot of each other!"

Having not stopped with preparing her food while she spoke, the caretaker put down the cutlery and took up the chopsticks. Deftly pulling a strip of bacon forward, she placed a slice of egg upon it and added a piece of pickled daikon before pinching the bite-size offering together with her chopsticks. Okimi lifted the morsel to her mouth and let out a pleased hum of appreciation as the flavours burst across her tongue.

Before she could assemble another attempt at triggering a mouthgasm, Okimi heard someone enter the wardroom and glanced up out of habit. Spotting another crewmember she hadn't previously encountered, the caretaker decided that she was on a roll and waved towards the silver-haired neko. "Good morning! Welcome to the premiere session of Okimi's Informal Orientation and Integration program! Please, come join us when you're ready!" Oh yeah, this would be great!

Cabin 5

Sanda's internal clock woke her after just a few hours of sleep. She swore some in her heart language before rolling over and going back to sleep. She'd skip her workout routine today. Heaven knows she'd busted her butt the last few days fighting the Mishhu. She got another 2 hours sleep before hunger woke her up.

Sanda went and grabbed a shower. She had gone straight to bed after finally receiving the order to stand down. She allowed herself a luxury of taking a long shower, thoroughly washing out her long dark brown hair. She rubbed the knots out of her shoulders as the hot water ran over it. Maldita sea, esto es exactamente lo que necesitaba. Sanda mumbled to herself before finally getting out and drying her hair and body with a towel.

Dressed in a tank top and workout shorts, and with her still damp hair hanging limply down her back Sanda headed to get something to eat. She was starving and knew that Rossa would have a delicious breakfast waiting, as usual.

Wardroom

Sanda headed straight to the serving line and loaded her plate up. Half a dozen eggs and a dozen pieces of bacon along with a giant cup of coffee that she sweetened with a few fingers of Rum from her flask. She glanced around to see who was around. She saw one of the new girls wolfing down her breakfast which Sanda could certainly sympathize. She should go and say hello, but in all honesty she really wasn't in the mood to socialize. Not just yet. She was way too hungry. Besides the new girl had Yoshiro and Okimi keeping her company.

Sanda was a tough Nep with blue lighting tattoos covering her body and a thunderbolt over her left eye. Many saw her as unfeeling and mean. In reality she was actually quite nice and caring, once you got through that tough outer shell. She didn't usually warm up to new people right away. She still hadn't warmed up to Yoshiro and Okimi. They were both a little too happy going for her taste but the were beginning to grow on her. But even so, she'd probably slam one of them on the floor if they tried speaking to her before she had a chance to eat. She was quite hangry at the moment.

Sanda sat down a little ways from the rest. Close enough that she could hear their conversation and join if she chose to but far enough that it was clear that she wasn't going to say hello right off and began tucking into her food.

Yoko's habit of eating quickly came from an old encounter during her training. One of her peers tended to take her time eating. Their instructor disapproved rather intensely. Kept telling her to keep eating more since she had 'allll the time in the world'. Held up the entire platoon enough to embarrass her and breed a bit of anger from her teammates. The point was made though; you wouldn't always have time to savor what sustenance you got. Ships like these weren't common and though she thought she'd be fine if she did take a moment to slow down, it was a hard habit to break so far.

Luckily, she had a reason to pause in the form of a curiously purple skinned neko approaching her. She knew her kin could come out looking like that, but had met very few who had. She hastily finished her bite and put down the fork as the woman introduced herself. No rank was shared, so this was informal enough. Helpful for her current wariness of the ship's overall 'culture.' "Hi hi! Never had a caretaker on board before... Well maybe there was one on the Renaissance, but my time on there was so brief I never saw them. Anyway, Name's Fujiraki Yoko! Just Yoko is fine, I'm only a lowly grunt." She hadn't yet done anything yet to climb the ranks, but she was fine slumming it with the other Hei. She glances over at Yoshiro and gives a smile, "Yep! If you need some muscle to protect our crew, I'm your gal. I'll probably be taking after you, Yoshiro-san. I don't know how formal or casual the attitude is here. But I'm sure we'll be smiting squids together before long!"

Yoko looks back to Okimi and her smile turns a bit wry, "I've got the general maps downloaded, thank the empress. I do believe my bunk is right next to yours though! Don't worry, I'm fairly quiet at night. Got plenty of ways to burn energy around here so I shan't disturb you when you're trying to sleep. I'll be a good neighbor, promise."

Erika threw the energetic Neko a simple thumbs up and a thin-lipped smile before she went and got a plate and utensils. Ever the astute observer, an idea of the kind of person she was dealing with was already forming in her mind. With her face turned away she let out a long exhale as she mentally prepared for the ordeal she was about to endure.

She’d need energy, fortunately the spread seemed fit for task. Protein, carbs, only thing more you could want was it to taste and smell good. She leant forward and gave it a cursory sniff and looked down at the bacon and eggs she’d collected with some surprise, though none the less pleased expression. She made a confused frown and shrugged before walking over to a vacant seat near where the energetic Neko continued to prepare food.

“Hey, I’m Erika.” she said curtly, taking her seat. Once settled she gave a slight smile. “Sorry, I’m famished, let me get stuck in.”

She passed the fork to her left hand, while the knife left in her right was left with the blade towards her body. The knife then spun around in her palm a few times, passed it between her fingers and then let it fall to her palm in a comfortable position. She then deftly maneuvered an egg and some bacon atop the toast before skewering it with the fork and cutting it with her knife.

“I’m glad there is some kind of induction, even if unofficial. Feel like I was thrown in the deep end.” Erika said, looking up at the energetic Neko with a smile after she finished a bite. “Here’s your transfer orders, by the way on your way can you help deal with these manmade horrors beyond mortal comprehension?”

"Well, welcome to the Resurgence, Yoko-San. I think we'll get along great. Just remember that if you have any questions that you want me to answer, I will do so to the best of my ability." Yoshiro said with a smile. "As for the squids, they are going to pay for what they have done to the galaxy. They are going to hurt real bad for it. Just remember to do what you're ordered to do and we'll do just fine." He said as he ate.

He remembered when his mother had told him about his father's death and swore to fight to protect his family and his people. It filled him with a new resolve to do so when he saw the Mishhu again while rescuing the Wakaba from the Mishhuvurthyar. He finally found purpose in his life and wouldn't stop until he either died, they surrendered, or somehow the war had ended.

"If you need anything from me, Yoko-San, remember that my door is open and I am always or will try to be available to talk about whatever it is you need to talk about." Yoshiro said. He meant it too. Now that he was in a leadership position, he had to try and help whenever he was able.

Yayoi

Yayoi was awakened somewhat by swear words in her sister’s heart language causing her to turn in hopes of sleeping some more. The battle before had been long and tiring and she wanted to rest, but she was losing her battle with awakening, so she sat up. Her eyes went to the clock on the side of her bed and muttered “May as well get up.. Yuri is likely awake and the chances of her getting into trouble is high” as Yayoi left her bed, she stretched her arms and went to take her shower.

Unknowingly copying Sanda as she did so, but unlike Sanda she didn’t take as long of a shower. “I should check in with Poppy, and see how she’s doing as her trainee. “ Yayoi muttered again, her words covered up by the rushing water. She eventually leaves it “ok, food, then training, ” she said to herself as she got dressed and walked towards. “YURI! QUIT FLYING SO FAST, ARE YOU A CHILD?!” Yayoi barked as she saw her daughter flying ahead of her and shook her head with a stern expression on her face.

Her daughter’s presence close by the door, made the doors to the wardroom open up. This allowed those in the hall and the wardroom to hear her. Yayoi walked in after her daughter and a few of the crew and made her way to the line.

Yuri

When the battle was over and they were back in safe space, Yuri was pleased to be able to go to bed, as it had been dramatic and worrying about boarding, and the possibility of her mother dyeing weight heavily on her. But now that the battle was over, and they could stand down, and added the fact she didn’t see her mother in the tank, she decided to take the bed nearest Oimi and go to sleep.

Unfortunately, when she woke up and saw the clock she nearly had a heart attack before she remembered she was in the medical bay, and that the Technicians hadn’t yet fixed one of the clocks. But even so, seeing Okimi wasn’t there, she hurried to shower , and flew to the wardroom as fast as she could. She wanted to be there for breakfast and not be late.
Unfortunately, her mother saw her, and ever the strict disciplinarian, Yayoi had yelled, causing her to be embarrassed, and lowered herself to the floor. Her presence had caused the door to open, meaning those inside could hear her. Yuri had spotted Okimi immediately and desiring to wait for food, she hurried to her friend. “Friendship bomb!” she said as she immediately wrapped her arms around her. “Hii!” she said before she spotted the new crew members. “Ohh new friends! Hiya Welcome to the Resurgence!” Yuri said with a big smile on her face.

“I’m Asakura Yuri, santo Hei and medical serving under Poppy-Sepai. Speaking of Sempai, I’m sure she’d want me to remind you, if you hadn’t already to go to the Medical Bay to get checked out, and to back up your ST. I take it you did already, Okimi-chan?’ she asked her friend, as she remembered Okimi had spent some time in the medical bay so Poppy likely had done it already.

YSS Resurgence - Wardroom

Seeing the second of the new crewmates give her a thumbs up and smile in reaction to the invitation to join them, Okimi nodded and turned back to the conversation at her table. As she twisted, she spotted the thunderbolt-decorated Nepleslian Sanda and offered a small nod to the experienced soldier before finishing her turn. As Yoko started to introduce herself, Okimi continued eating her breakfast. Now that she thought about it, she never had the chance to talk with the caretakers aboard the Renaissance, like she had planned back during the rescue of the Seelie. She savoured another morsel as Yoko talked with Yoshiro. Once Yoshiro had offered his services as senpai, at least that's how Okimi chose to interpret the offer, she responded to Yoko's information about being bunked together.

"Oh, really? Nice! I'll have to introduce you to Yuri at some point as she's in Cabin 7 too. And don't worry, the great thing about these smaller ships is that it doesn't take long to learn where everything is. Its not like the Wakaba - did you see the size of that ship? I bet you could get lost for hours inside that behemoth!" Back in the medical center, Okimi had looked up information on the Shari-class battleship and had seen the deck plans, so she knew just how accurate her words were. The caretaker turned to see the second new crewmember had now joined them, breakfast tray in hand.

Okimi mentally matched the name with Erika's face and smiled. The smile became a little strained when she saw the white-haired neko using her cutlery in the wrong hands, deliberately focusing in order not to show any further reaction. She still hadn't managed to stray from the etiquette training she had received back during the socialisation month after her birth and often had an overwhelming urge to say something when she saw others not following it. But, she had so far managed to control this instinctive reaction and this time would be no different and forced her attention back on Erika's words.

"Well, its definitely more unofficial than it is an actual induction. More me helping to ensure that you have everything you need to get through the coming days as you settle in. Fortunately, you've got the opportunity right now to meet Heisho Yoshiro here and over there is Nitô Heisho Hoshi." She tilted her head towards where Sanda was seated. "Between the two of them, I suspect they'll be able to handle any issues with your duties on board." She smiled at the two new crew. "As for anything else, I.." She was suddenly cut off as the wardroom door opened and the raised voice of another of the ship's combat specialists was heard as Yayoi berated her daughter.

Shaking her head in amusement over Yuri's antics, Okimi received the 'friendship bomb' with as much grace and dignity as she could, although she was certain to squeeze her friend in return. Her amusement continued as her friend gave Yoko and Erika the Yuri Experience and suggested a visit to the medical center may be in order. She nodded in response to the question directed her way. "Yeah, Poppy took care of it all when she cleared me for duty about an hour ago. I thought about waking you, but you looked far too cute to disturb. Plus, you know, after spending so much time looking after me the least I could do was let you get some more sleep." She smiled at Yuri before turning back to the others.

"Now, where was I... Oh, yeah, if you need anything outside of your official duties, let me know! I can't promise I will be able to help, but I'll do what I can!" Okimi nodded in confirmation. She considered keeping the morale and happiness of the Resurgence crew at a high level to be one of her responsibilities, after all. Hmm, maybe once they were done with the cleanup there would be time to do something special for the crew? Then again, the Kikyō no Sekku festival was just around the corner and would be a chance for the crew to unwind...

Erika’s smile turned into a smirk as she noticed Okimi’s expression tighten. She gave each persona a polite wave from her seat as they were introduced. “I’m teasing, I know things are hectic. Mineko was also kind enough to show me around. Specifically, the most important places, the dojo and onsen.”

The mention of backing up her ST made Erika’s own features tighten. None the less she forced a smile. She devoured another bite while Okimi and Yuri continued talking.

“Well, I suppose I’m wondering what you do for fun on this ship.” Erika asked after they were done. “Aside from pumping Iron in the dojo and messing around with the VR. Oh, and is there a good place to go if I need some space from my cabin mates?”

Sanda half listened to the conversations going on around her, but mostly she focused her attention on her food. She was shoveling her food in with a spoon in one hand and a strip of bacon in the other. She was starving. It was the first real meal she had had in the last 36 hours. Between fighting the Mishhu and helping the techs fix the Res she'd been super busy.

The tattooed Nep made sort work of her breakfast. She wiped her plate clean with some toast then washed it down with a big drink of orange juice. Ah, that hit the spot. She leaned back in her chair and stretched her long legs out in front of her. As she began sipping her coffee she studied the two new girls. Both Nekos but quite different in appearance. One was super short, not even 5 feet. The other looked to be about the same size as herself. Both held themselves in a competent and professional manner. That was good at least.

Sanda eyed the tall one over her cup. She caught the knife spin before she had started eating. ¿Otra chica del cuchillo? Eso debería ser divertido. Sanda thought to herself. Her study was interrupted by Yuir's entrance and Yayoi's yelling at her. Sanda cringed into her coffee cup. How did a kid from such a straight lace mom get so wild? She shook her head and sighed, feeling her battle sister's frustration.

When Okimi mentioned Sanda's name she merely nodded in acknowledgement. When Erika asked her question Sanda smiled. "I didn't know there was anything more fun than running simulations in the VR room or working out in the Dojo." She sipped her coffee. It was very good. "When I need some time to myself, I usually reserve an hour or two in the VR room. Or there is always the observation platform in the roll bar of the ship."

Yoko's smile widened as she was offered guidance and greetings from the three who took note of her. "Okimi-san, Toshiro-senpai, and Asakura-san... Thank you for the warm greetings. When I get back from my shuttle escorting duty, I'll happily take the grand tour. But gotta make sure I'm well prepped. Never know, the squiddy bastards could have left behind surprises in their wreckage for unsuspecting recovery ops. Wouldn't put it past them." Her contempt for the Mishhu was clear. Yoko was the sort that definitely bought into the usual propaganda put out by Yamatai, even if not entirely wholesale.

"And hai, I'll be sure to get my backup set on here. I'd hate to trip a mine and have that be the ignominious footnote of my service. Thanks for the reminder Asakura-san."
Though she intended to have the same Mindy setup as before, the likelihood of her taking actual damage was low. She wouldn't have any trouble keeping up with the slow recovery shuttles regardless.

The young Hei was definitely a cheerful individual, Smiles came easy to her and she was rather perky in tone. Even when talking about grimmer subjects she didn't seem to lose any positivity. Of course she was going to survive any surprises on today's duty. Of -course- she had nothing to fear from explosives or traps. Perhaps that made her sound reckless, but her confidence was at least not unbearably saccharine. The tanned neko would be an eager addition to the crew, if nothing else.

“Sometimes you just need some space, you know?” Erika mused, her utensils left hovering over the plate. She leaned back in her chair, her golden eyes glazed over as if she was miles away. "Can’t always book the VR room whenever you want, so it's nice to know there’s an alternative." She then chuckled as her eyes refocusing on Sandra. “Besides, nothing beats the thrill of reality. Base jumping in VR? It’s fun, but it’s just not the same as feeling real wind against your face.”

“I always get this weird feeling whenever I go for a backup,”
Erika admitted after Yoko had finished “I haven’t experienced...you know, being restored from a save. But the mere idea of suddenly losing days, even hours of memories? It’s a disconcerting notion.”

Erika then turned to the tanned Neko with a smile. “Stick with me when you’re out there Yoko. I’ve got some tricks to help I-D certain types of traps and explosives, at least ones that use electronics and sensors.” She turned back to her meal and began cutting it up as her cadence became introspective once more. “A back up is nice to have a safety net, but one I’d would rather never have to use. Don’t know about you.”

As the crew got breakfast, captain Aoba entered the room, causing the chatter to momentarily stop. The captain stood up in front of the window and told them, "I want everyone to make sure your dress uniforms are ready to go and perfect, because we've been invited to appear in the Kikyo No Sekku parade in front of millions of people. Following that, the Empress wants to meet our crew again and has an updated mission for us. We're headed home to Yamatai soon. That's all for now." After this he went and made a tray of food.

Pidole, Euikoshi, Cassie, and Poppy, who were all roommates, also had come in and went to go meet the new crew members.

"Oh gosh," Cassie blushed. "It's Hayden," she said, spotting a dark-skinned new infantry team member. "We, uh, hooked up once, but it was before I started identifying as female," she told Euikoshi in a low voice. "This could get complicated."

Poppy went over to Erika first and greeted her. "Hello! I don't believe we've met yet. I'm Poppy, Resurgence's medic."

YSS Resurgence - Wardroom

Without delay, Mineko's jaw dropped as her fingers gingerly released the datapad and let it clatter on the table below. Her eyes swept the room below, trying to see if everyone else was as taken aback as her. Cassie had begun whispering fervently, but as Mineko's ears honed in on the conversation, she felt embarrassed for her intrusion. Instead, she sat back and chewed her lip as she reflected about the announcement.

She had heard the rumors about the Empress' role in the Resurgence's missions, but they had seemed so baseless at the time. Now... she wasn't so sure. The confirmation of Himiko's hand guiding the ship felt unreal to be in the middle of. Her fingers idly drummed the table starting with her pinky and through to her index finger in a metronomic motion as she indulged herself in ideating on what it would be like to receive a mission from the sovereign.

YE 45.5 - 4 weeks after the rescue of the Wakaba

Central Fleet Depot, Yamatai

It was a rainy evening in Central Uesureya when the YSS Resurgence's battered figure appeared in the clouded skies of Yamatai. A mist of splashing water hung over her and streams drained off her sides as spotlights revealed armored hull covered in burns, craters, holes, and gouges. As she neared the ground, Resurgence eventually landed with the careful assistance of space tugboats on a set of supports specially built for the ship since its landing gear was lost in the fight with the Mishhuvurthyar, just outside the massive old hangar where the ship had received its last rebuild, which concluded a month ago. A hydraulic groan filled the air as the ship slowly slid into the hangar.

YSS Resurgence - Bridge

Captain Aoba stood from his captain's chair as the ship finally came to a halt, and picked up his intercom handset. "This is the captain, set condition 5 throughout the ship, systems on standby mode. We will release the crew for liberty in five minutes. As a reminder, all crew members are expected to participate in the upcoming Kikyo no Sekku parade. During the maintenance period, you will need to stay at a Star Army barracks or personal residence and must remove all personal belongings from the ship. Additionally, the Empress has invited me and any crew who wishes to come, to meet her at her palace in Kyoto. Those who want to go are welcome to join me at the cargo bay door. Enjoy your time on Yamatai, but maintain readiness. Star Army Engineering tells me we'll fly again by YE 45.6." The captain picked up his Type 36 Officers cap and his black Type 32 Coat, his sword, and his umbrella before heading down the bottom of the ship where the crew was starting to gather to be released. As he passed through the bridge doorway, he took one last look at the bridge as the lights went dim.

Cargo Bay Ramp

"Every time this happens they put everything back to factory designs," Pidole said to Euikoshi, "That's why lately I've been submitting my modifications to the factory designers," she said. Her big blue beetle nodded happily in agreement from a perch on top of her head.

Poppy spotted Erika and half-jokingly threatened, "This doesn't mean you will escape your medical exam forever!" She mimicked the again of slapping on a latex glove, before grabbing her duffel bag.

Erika turned her head to face Poppy, her expression deep in thought as she carried her duffel down the ramp. It took a moment for her to process the Neko's 'threat', causing Erika's eyebrows to raise and an amused smile to unfurl across her lips. "Here I was resigned to my fate, but now you're just making it into a game."

Just in time to catch the way Poppy was miming with her hands, Mineko took long strides down the ramp. Though Poppy was capable of extraordinary feats when it came to saving lives, she still buoyed the ship with her entertaining ribbing and games. It was only a matter of time before she had roped the newest recruits into one such amusement.

Erika held short the end of the ramp, waiting for Mineko to catch up. "You going to the meet with the Empress?" She asked, matching her stride with the neko.

"Wouldn't miss it for anything," Mineko replied cheerily. Only when she had caught up to Erika did she add more faintly. "Didn't hear me tossing and turning all night? I think I got three hours of sleep. Anxiety's normal before meeting her, right?"

Erika chuckled "Well if its not we can be abnormal together. Much more fan fare than I was expecting, that's for sure."

"I'll sleep like a rock tonight. You're welcome to stay at my apartment in Kyoto, by the way, there's futon to go around." Mineko offered, relishing in the idea of sleeping in her old place and the springy but stiff feeling of sleeping on tatami mats instead of the enlisted bunks.

"Much appreciated, I think I'll take you up." Erika replied, giving a beaming smile "Definitely beats the idea of being stuck in the barracks." She then gave a large sigh "Of course we'd get shore leave before my first pay cycle."

"I'll spot you!" Mineko said, but added, "Or you can do some work for one of my old bosses to get a quick buck. Pay's better than you'd think." Mineko was partly just excited to see her old friends and dance school again and knew part of the training there, like deep cleaning the hollow-wood floors and around the okiya, was rewarding work she'd be happy to do alongside Erika if she didn't want a free hand out.

"I wouldn't ask that of you." Erika said, as though in answer to Mineko's unspoken thought. "Doing some work on the side sounds interesting though."

A cargo truck from the First Fleet pulled up and its driver, a burly Kodian Heisho, offered to deliver everyone's bags to wherever they were staying.

Okimi dropped her duffel off with the Kodian Heisho to be sent to her assigned barracks while she was off meeting the Empress. When she had heard the Captain's announcement, it had taken all of .3141 seconds to decide that the caretaker was so going along on that trip and prepare accordingly. She'd worry about finding her way to the assigned barracks afterwards - its not like she could get that lost on the homeworld.

Cheilith wanted to see the Empress again, so she showed up to the Cargo Bay dressed in a nice dress uniform with the sword Himiko had gifted her with on her back. She waved, "Hey! Going to see the empress!?" It perhaps wasn't clear if the last was a question or an excited statement.

Yuri had her duffle bag along with her mother's dropped off with the Kodian Heisho to be sent to her mother's bar, to the residential area above it. She stepped into place as she moved to join the captain on the trip to meet the Empress. She wanted to see the Empress speak to her mother, only because her mother was amazing, though strict. She gently pulled on the collar, only to have her hand grabbed by her mother. "Stop, your damage it" Yayoi warned as she joined the group.

Sanda was dressed in her Type 35 uniform with all the trimmings. She even had met the empress before, when the Resurgence was first commissioned. That had been right after Glimmergold. Sanda had been recovering from that and hadn't really enjoyed her time. Back then she had still been a young and hotheaded Santo Hei. It had also been super cold and it had hurt her shoulder. Now she was an decorated and experienced Nito Heisho. It would be a much different visit.

As interesting as meeting the Empress of Yamatai sounded, Trowa had some higher ranking people to visit. Namely his wife and two kids. They took priority over even the Empress.

One benefit to being new to the ship was that Yoko had very few personal effects. Standard equipment and all fit very nicely into a single duffel bag. She had no real relatives or contacts in Yamatai itself, so the most she could hope for is the offer to see the Empress... Which she admittedly was fangirling inside a little bit over. She only hoped that the Mindy she used didn't record her battle chatter, as that would be a little embarrassing... She may have gotten a -little- patriotic in the heat of the moment.

Though speaking of embarrassing, she had not the time to get something more fancy than the most basic of formal uniforms for the event. She was going to look the plainest of them all. Real rank and file. That was okay though... She had only just joined after all. Yoko could hardly stand out among the crew who had fought and bled for the ship many times already. Though inwardly she mused that she couldn't stand out anyway being so short.

Yoshiro's quarters

Yoshiro was packing his gear and thought about what he had wanted to say when he met the Empress. Never in a million years did he even think he would have the chance to meet someone with such o high status as the Empress.

He had the duffel bag sent to his home with a letter saying that he would come to visit. He headed to the hangar to meet with the people who were meeting with the empress.

Hangar

A second vehicle pulled up out of the rain, this one was a government van. When the driver emerged, she wasn't in a Star Army uniform, she was wearing a white kimono, black boots, and red hakama pants with a gold trim, and carrying a samurai sword and an old Type 27 Nekovalkyrja service pistol. A Ketsurui Samurai from the Empress's private guard. "Greetings," she said to the crew, her eyes locking on Taisa Aoba. "If you're ready, I can bring you and your crew to the palace."

Yoshiro was awestruck. He tried to speak but he was speechless. He was nervous about meeting with the Empress all of a sudden but he followed the group to the van.

"oohh, she's pretty! and cool" Yuri murmured to herself as she caught sight of the Samurai's appearance. Yayoi stepped forward, hoping her daughter will be on her best behavior as she and Yuri made their way to the van. Telepathically, Yayoi reminded her daughter to review behavior on the topic of behavior while in the Palace to even meeting the Empress.

Suddenly it dawned on Okimi that meeting the Empress meant meeting the Empress and everything that would entail. She suddenly began reviewing every piece of information stored in her brain on the subject of deportment, etiquette and Star Army regulations referencing behavioral standards. Quickly realising that she was severely unprepared for the magnitude of the coming imperial visit, the caretaker did her best to hide her mounting panic.

"I'm ready!" Cheilith said, clambering into the car, "So have you ever met her before?" She asked the new crew member.

Cassie checked her Type 35 uniform and the position of her medals on it one more time before heading to the van. "Yes, when the ship was about to launch for the first time," she told Cheilith. "She's sort of the ship's sponsor, I think. Oh, I thought you were talking to me for a second."

Yoko didn't respond out loud. She wasn't addressed, and didn't want to be seen speaking out of turn. Protocol was surely intense around the empress. The worst case scenario of them blurting out some grave offense briefly flashed through her mind. Anxiety built upon itself for a couple moments before she shudders and blinks it away. Focus, focus... At least she wasn't alone in her nervousness. Glancing to the side, she saw the slight shaking of Okimi and reaches over. Partly to calm herself and partly to distract herself from her own stress. She pats her arm gently, "We'll be alright. Just get the bowing right and be modest, yeah?"

Okimi looked at the short infantry neko and gave her a hesitant smile. "Maybe. Its just, what if we get it wrong and somebody notices? Maybe they decide we offended the Empress and make sure we get reassigned to a garbage scow on loan to the Nepleslians?"

Erika overheard and gave Okimi a light flick on the head as she passed "Us newbies are anxious enough as it is. You don't need to be painting such hellish pictures for us." she said as she climbed into the vehicle.

Yoko scowls at Erika when she flicks Okimi. She clearly doesn't approve of that kind of treatment of their caretaker, but she doesn't speak up this time. There'd be a time and a place to set boundaries, but right now they needed to have themselves sorted before they appear in front of the Empress. She does quietly give the caretaker's hand a small squeeze to reassure her though.

Okimi blinked at the reprimand from the white-haired neko and tried to stop her lip from trembling. She turned her head so nobody would notice her suddenly moist eyes. She wouldn't cry, not over something so petty. She did make a mental note to not bring up anything that could be categorized as a personal weakness with Erika in the future though. She offered a smile to Yoko and squeezed her hand back.

The captain got in the passenger seat up front next to the samurai Nekovalkyrja, a raven haired old-school looking Nekovalkyrja with a classic hime-cut hairstyle and fair skin.

Pidole, Poppy, and Euikoshi hoped in the van. To make extra room, Euikoshi sat in Pidole's lap. Sakuko and Gabriela joined in as well, plus a few others. Hayden, one of the new guys, nervously scratched his head and stayed behind.

With her duffel having been taken away and now just in her Type 35, Mineko realized she hadn't worn it once since graduation. It was stiff around the wrists where the cuffs sat and the rounded collar kept hitting her chin, but she employed every bit of self-control to not tug or itch anything and sat straight as a board squished between Pidole with Euikoshi atop her. Her mind went to graduation and she kept her mind off of her mounting anxieties by looking into SAINT in-service training courses that would be available to her —and Erika if she so chose— while the Resurgence was being repaired.

Sanda smiled at Cassie, "We were young and hot headed back then weren't we." Sanda chuckled, thinking back to the first time they met the Empress. She looked over at Pidole. "I particularly remember you almost getting in big trouble because of little Bidole. Someone thought he was a pet and not a crew member."

"Just a bit, but we've grown and matured. Well, perhaps expect for Thad. I didn't know what I wanted to be back then. It took this ship, this crew to help me figure it out." Cheilith responded.

Yayoi turned her attention out the windows, as she silently observe the passage of cars and feeling as calm as calmness she embodied. "wowee! Pidole got into trouble?!" Yuri asked Sanda.

"Not really, some officer who wasn't around long enough for me to remember his name fussed some at her but nothing came of it." Sanda assured Yuri.

Yuri nodded her head in understanding as she relaxed. She liked Pidole, and Bidole she thought both were amazing.

The Empress Palace, Kyoto, Yamatai

After driving onto a transport ship, the van arrived in the Military District of Kyoto (also called the MDK) amidst the many skyscrapers, spires, and office buildings that made up the Star Army's headquarters in the military-restricted Western half of the capital. They drove past Star Army Personnel Command's headquarters on the way out, getting a sighting of Taisho Ketsurui-Shinjuku Hanako opening the door for someone on the way into the large castle-like building. They passed out through a security gate and into the heart of Kyoto, passing the blackened hulking monument of the Uesureyan Fortress, and finally through the gates of the Empress Palace at the center of the city.

Yoshiro was flabbergasted about what he was seeing. "Whoa..." was all he could say as his mind was blown from what he had seen.

"oh..my..gosh" Yuri said as she caught sight of the Empress's palace, and not only that, but the Imperial Premier herself! it amazed her and reminded her that if they were lucky, they could meet Hanako too. She could meet Hanako again, since Hanami Festival. Though she felt her mother stifen at the sight of Hanako, before she remembered hearing about her mother being stuck on the planet, during the war. Yuri wondered if her mother was embarrassed that the planet was still lost.

The van pulled past flowering bushes and gardens into a covered archway where they could enter the palace protected from the rain. Their samurai guide led the way through the elaborate door into the interiors, which had blue carpets, chandeliers, and a great amount of paintings of the notable people and accomplishments of the Yamatai Star Empire.

Yoshiro followed close, looking around and taking in the art of battles past. He was honored to be a part of this and he was reminded with each step that he took why he joined the Star Army.

The tension as Yoko accompanied the group could be cut with a knife. For her part she was contributing to lowering it by humming a light cadence. Even if it was a simple marching one. She wouldn't dare sing it out loud though. Not the official one or the cruder one the infantry liked to sing. Wouldn't be proper.

Cheilith babbled enthusiastically to whoever was close about the paintings and what was happening in them and the history that was involved.

"I think that's the battle of Glimmergold," Cassie pointed at one for Cheilith. "It must be new."

"I wonder if they painted us in the picture?" Sanda pondered. "It was one hell of a fight wasn't it?"

"Weren't we on the 'Presurgence?' at the time?" Euikoshi asked. "The refurbished Kyoto-class carrier? It's hard to tell one from the others."

Yayoi glanced to the paintings as she scanned them with her eyes. Yuri also looked as she followed but there was a thought on her mind, an idea that was forming that surely some may be displeased with. She moves to catch up to Okimi.

"Yeah, but we were still there." Sanda nodded.

"It's kinda weird there being a painting of something you were a part of here. Like a teeny tiny part, but still a part." Cheilith commented.

Yoshiro was looking at the paintings of the Battle For Glimmergold. He did not fight there and wished that he could have. "Whoever fought there, at Glimmergold, will forever be honored. " Yoshiro said with respect for those who fought and died there.

Okimi, a little calmer now her initial panic had died down, found instead that she felt like an intruder in the palace grounds. Here was a place for heroes. She was just a caretaker and was fairly certain there was nothing particularly heroic to be attributed to doing the laundry of a Fuji-class Gunship. During the later battles the Resurgence had recently experienced, she had just been stuck in a bed in the ship's medical center. Looking around at the records of Yamatai's heroes, she felt like a failure.

"Remember that time the Empress gave us ten million KS to buy information from Soon Bardoon on Sood Zadra so we could get the location of that star system?" Poppy asked the others.

If Mineko had been hanging back before, she was gravitating towards the group now with ears perked.

Erika's features had become hard and inscrutable as she walked the grounds with the group, particularly close to Mineko. Whether out of support for her fellow SAINT, or for her own she wouldn't say.

"I remember the time she ordered Senator Iemochi to be arrested," Gabriela said. "Something about illegal self-cloning."

"That was a weird situation all around. Like Iemochi isn't the type to betray the empire in any way. He's still a senator too. Like if you hated Yamatai, why would you do that? I don't think he did it." Cheilith liked the Elysian senator.

"That's not one of my faviorte memories. I had a lot of respect for Iemochi and hated that I had to arrest him. I wish he could see me now with my Heisho chevrons." Sanda said looking at her red chevron. Iemochi was one of the first people to encourage Sanda to push to become an NCO. Also one of the first people to really start treating her like one too. She really missed him.

"Kiyo told me about that, I honestly didn't believe her when she told me, so this was legit?" Yayoi asked as she looked towards the crew conversing on a specific topic.

"The dude tried to pass a self-cloning bill right before that," Cassie pointed out. "Anyway..."

"So? We do need to update our laws about that. Their just a patchwork that doesn't always fit together. He's a senator, it's his job to propose changes to make our system of laws better." Cheilith argued.

"Wonder what the Kuvexians know about the Elysian genome because of what he did, though," Mineko half-mumbled, her own interests on the intelligence the enemy had at play here.

"Whatever they have, I don't think it's because he gave it to them, it's not in his character." Cheilith pointed out.

"Not what the Empress thinks," Mineko said tersely, waking away from Cheilith.

"Down these stairs, please," their samurai guide directed them. They passed through a series of airlocks down into place under the palace where the ornate walls were replaced by high-tech metal plating and glowing lines of energy. There were faint rumors that there was an ancient star fortress buried under the Empress Palace but few knew it was true.

"Hai" Yayoi said simply as she followed their Samurai guide.

Yoshiro followed the guide and walked down the stairs. Quiet and respectful he stood, but nervous.

Erika said nothing, though there was a curiosity to her head motions as she glanced around the room and its sudden change in architecture.

"Thank you, Fujin," the voice of the Empress thanked her samurai as the crew arrived in a large open chamber filled with Nekovalkyrja cloning tubes and stasis chambers. "Thank you all for coming," she told the Resurgence crew. The Empress was a pretty Nekovalkryja woman with vibrant red eyes and silky black hair, and she was dressed in an ornate gold and blue kimono of considerable size. An ancient jade hairpiece was in her hair. She gave everyone a bow and then took a seat on a very fancy, very old wooden chair.

Yoshiro was starstruck. He bowed in response but this being his first time doing this he was unsure of what to do next.

It was happening the Empress was right there, infront of her, in the same room as her, addressing them. Yuri fortunately for her mother was polite, but she couldn't help but think the Empress was pretty. Yayoi had stood straight, with no slouch, as she prepared herself to properly bow then did so.

Yoko's eyes scanned the room as they entered. The chambers and tubes were not what she expected for a meeting with the empress. Was it meant to imply something? Her nervousness raised a tic at the thought. But of course, once her eyes fell upon the Empress, all other thoughts were chased away. She quickly bowed the lowest her small frame would allow, having to shift her legs to keep her balance. To her surprise, the Empress bowed back! To do that to a captain was huge! For the moment, she maintained her bow, not daring to look back up until given the command to be at ease.

Cheilith bowed respectfully, "We are at your service, your highness."

One of the tubes behind the Empress hissed and opened, and out of it came a clone of Mistress-Taisho Ketsurui Yui, commander of the Star Army of Yamatai. Her eyes glowed as Yui remotely took control of the spare body from her space station in orbit, and joined the empress at her side.

Sanda stood at attention then bowed with the others. She had seen the Empress before and again wasn't as star struck as some of the others. Her gaze began to wonder towards the Samurai. Now those were interesting characters. Some of the best fighters in the Galaxy. But her attention was suddenly back in it's proper place when Mistress-Taisho Yui came out of one of the cloning chambers. Sanda stood straighter and automatically saluted. Ok, now she was star struck.

Yuri widened her eyes in amazement as Yui had arrived, and she couldnt believe how lucky she was, as she bowed with the other members of the crew.

Herself fascinated by Yui's remote possession of her body, Mineko's mind raced as her mouth had parted slightly. After a bow, she looked lost in wonder at the sight of the Mistress Taisho's nude form, but in reality she was calculating the distance and possibilities of such a trait in the Nekovalkyrja series. Only Ketsurui Yui was able to remotely control another and the singularity of the feature made it all the more enticing to Mineko to know more about

It took a moment for Erika to register, caught off guard by the hissing of the chamber. Her expression hardened again as her mind caught up to the situation, though her features reddened at the nude form of the admiral. She was quick to join the others in bowing, as if to hide her features.

Now in the presence of not one but two august personages, Okimi put her self-doubts and fears to the side. She could deal with the crisis of faith later. For now, she bowed, deeply, as was only appropriate when meeting individuals of such higher station than her own.

"It's that beetle again," Yui chuckled, pointing Bidole out as a helper gave her a kimono to put over her body. Pidole just gave the Taisho a salute and stared, prompting Yui to say "stand easy."

Yoko made an audible exhale as she stood back up straight. Which didn't go very high, but still. The tanned neko finally took a good look at her two superiors. Her inner dialogue went something like 'eeeeeee'. The leaders of their nation were so powerful looking. Pretty, graceful and dangerous in her eyes. Her throat basically locked closed, unable to make a noise while she quietly fangirled her heart out.

Yoshiro was nervously fidgeting, not sure what he should be doing. He never thought about this happening so he was not as prepared for it as he thought.

Yuri and Yayoi stood up straight as the order came to stand easy.

The analyst's interest in Yui's technology had diminished slightly when the commander of the Star Army spoke gently about the beetle. Mineko's hairs raised on her neck as she realized that this was a real person with a real sense of humor. Yui wasn't some omniscient and cold Kami but a multi-faceted Nekovalyrja like Mineko. The straightened hairs tickling her collar had made her back as straight as a plank in an effort to ease the tickling feeling of goose flesh. Her blue and red eyes slid from the Taisho to the Empress as she began to speak.

"Captain Aoba and crew of the YSS Resurgence," the Empress of Yamatai began, "Taisho Yui has kept Us appraised of your progress and We have been pleased with your inventiveness and dedication to the mission and We have enjoyed your reports on the worlds of the Yamatai Star Empire. I admit I perhaps underestimate the amount of...interference with my mission that would be caused by the hostile forces again and again, which you have pushed through despite overwhelming odds at times. You assisted Nepleslia prior to the International Relations Conference, rescued our lost Wakaba for PEARL, and exposed a new Mishhuvurthyar threat, at great risk."

"For your actions in this last mission, I am honoring you all by giving you the Yui's Blood Medallion," Taisho Yui said. As she told them this, Nekovalkyrja emerged from the sides of the room and began pinning the ruby droplet shaped medals, which hung from red ribbons with thick pink stripes. "You all are recognized for extraordinary service that positively affected the future of the entire Star Army."

Yuri stood straight and silent as she heard the words of their Empress, and she could feel how proud her mother was to hear them too. Though Yuri had felt proud of all that the ship has accomplished thus far, and was looking forward to what happens next.

Erika's posture subtly shifted with discomfort as the empress recounted the crew's achievements. She felt out of place, having contributed little towards those successes, like an imposter. A feeling that only deepened when the induction was announced.

Yoshiro noticed Erika's discomfort. "If you want to talk about what's bothering you, we can talk after this meeting is over. " he said to Erika.

"I'm standing in front of the Empress and a naked Admiral, getting the highest medal in the Star Army and I'm not even 2 yet." Erika responded via telecoms, her inflection rather dead pan.

Sanda's mouth fell open. The Yui's Blood Medallion! The highest award that the Star Army gave. "¡Truenos y relámpagos!" Sanda exclaimed. Sanda was a Ranger and a Giretsu. She was also a Nep. She loved combat. Lived for it. But the though of receiving such an award turned the lightning tattooed woman speechless.

Yayoi's eyes widened in shock as she learned that their Taisho was giving them the medal bearing her own name, that was certainly the highest of honors she could achieve. It was amazing to hear.

Yoko was interrupted from her thoughts as the empress began listing the crew's accomplishments. She hadn't really known what to expect when she joined the resurgence. But apparently this was a busy ship. She knew she wasn't alone in feeling that she absolutely didn't deserve such an honor. But to refuse would be the height of discourtesy. She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes for a moment as a neko has to bend down to put the medal over her head.

Cheilith's eyes went wide. There were not many in the Empire who had the Yui's Blood.

Okimi started blinking as her body froze in response to the furious conflict that was awoken within her. On the one hand, she did not deserve to be awarded the Yui's Blood Medallion and really wanted to refuse it. Her induction could only cheapen the value of membership within. On the other hand, it was ordered by the Empress and you didn't refuse an order from the Empress. Did she refuse and thereby snub the Empress, or did she keep quiet and accept the unearned accolade like the morally reprehensible coward she felt like. Would her refusal ruin things for the rest of the crew? Okimi knew some of them were deserving of the recognition. Maybe she could just accept the reward and leave it in storage somewhere it could be forgotten about?

Mineko, too, felt like her medal wasn't deserved. She shirked when someone came forward to put it on her and her eyes flashed to her captain, as if looking up the chain of command to someone that could do something.

The Empress continued, "We have requested that Taisho Yui continues to lend Us the services of your ship for missions the in the interest of Our empire, and she has agreed," she told them. "However, recent events indicate we need a shift in strategy to remain safe and in control of our own destiny. As you celebrate the Kikyo no Sekku holiday, be prepared for even greater challenges in the future. We will call on you once again."

Yoshiro was not ready for this but he accepted the honor that was bestowed upon him. "Yes, Empress. I...I am honored..." He said basically speechless and he bowed.

"Essentially," Yui said, expounding on the Empress's words, "We've seen that the galaxy outside the Kikyo Sector is extremely dangerous and full of enemies and hostiles that are a threat to us. If we are to survive for the long term, the Star Army has to actively get out there and start taking them down. I will be getting together with my admirals in the near future to discuss plans for what we can do, but we're potentially looking at operations on a scale the Star Army has never done before, and a potential war with the Mishhuvurthyar. Once we decide on a plan, the Empress will make an announcement to the Empire. This is, of course, classified secret until the declaration, but your ship will be a part of it and I want you to know," the Taisho revealed.

"I understand and I am ready to serve," captain Aoba nodded.

"We are shifting the mission of the Resurgence from one of surveying the Yamatai Star Empire after the Kuvexian War to one of preparing for a great war across the Kagami Galaxy. You and your crew will be going out there to gain assets for the war effort by eliminating threats, helping those in need, recruiting allies at home and in the unknown reaches of space, and doing what you can to gather support for the Yamatai Star Empire," Empress Himiko explained.

Upon hearing the new directives they were given, Yoko began to understand. What they were being tasked with required a level of authority that could not stand to be questioned in the heat of the moment. Normally she'd assume something new would be made for such a thing, but this was how the Empress wanted to do it. Yoko bowed low, and saluted as she stood back up. "Our bodies, our minds, and our hearts are ever at your command, My Empress. Glory and eternity to Yamatai."

Cheilith bowed, "I have served, I will be of service."

"Ever in your service, my Empress. I shall live and I shall die for you." Yoshiro said with determination and bowed to Himiko.

What the Taisho had revealed swam through Mineko's head and she barely could comprehend the scale at which Yui was preparing her forces. The Star Army had fought massive wars with millions of ships and droves of Nekovalkyrja in the billions. The Mishhuvurthyar threat that required those numbers to fight against them boggled the analyst's mind. The work ahead would be arduous, but gratifying. If she survived.

Still stuck in the advanced version of a 'for until' programming loop with no exit clause, Okimi mechanically bowed once more. The caretaker just wanted this encounter to end and as much as she had wanted to see the Empress, now knew she should not have come.

Erika had gamed out a renewed conflict with the Mishhuvurthyar in her mind before this point. The Mishhu had kind of tipped their hand with the recent operation, and her analyst's mind had determined an expeditionary force was the best response. Of course, her analysis meant little, if anything on the fleet command level. It was somehow gratifying that command had come up with a similar response, though her mind still reeled from the method of execution. Questions? She had dozens, hundreds, but they all seemed inappropriate to ask in the moment.

"See you out there on the battlefield," Taisho Yui said with a grin, slipping out of her kimono. She climbed back into the stasis chamber on the wall and her body passed out as the cover closed.
