SketchUp: Doga on Steroids?

Not quite. Remember a while back, I posted this lovely toy called Doga?

Well, I've found a replacement tool that's capable of exporting to even high end graphical packages. It doesn't include parts but the level of control is immense because you directly edit the model instead of parts.

And you can export parts to files which can then be combined and shared with other users. So say, if you build a rifle or a unit, you could separate the arms, legs, head, etc and let people customize what you built.

There are also plugins that support things like working in scale, special materials, physics, even material and flesh like stuff and texture generation if you look around long enough.

It's called Google-SketchUp and it rocks. It's also free.

Here's a link and some tutorials:

YOu can mod the models? I've been playing with it for a while and hadn't figured that out. Good job on that. On another note, yes it is very, very nice. It even has the, ummm... Excidium-class Star Detroyer(? I think thats the name), and with great detail. It also happens to be totally out of proportion, but hey, what's a little giganticness? :D

UPDATE:

Sketchup has some very minor bugs 99% of users will never see. It is by far the easiest 3D app I have ever used. After building my first primitive models, I thought I was going to cry because I was so over-joyed.

I know that sounds weird but for someone who's tried almost every 3D package and found the rendering and modelling tools hideously complicated, this is like the next coming of christ.

Wait.

Did I say rendering tools?
Meet Kerkythea. Photorealistic rendering for absolutely nothing (even for business usage) capable of exporting from SketchUp.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerkythea
http://www.kerkythea.net/joomla/

It supports the same output rendering tools as some of the most popular rendering tools in the world and it costs nothing. It's a little complex but the results are staggering and there's a tightly knit community who aim to help.

Kerky supports Windows and Linux and a Mac OS version is due March, since it's an open-source application.

I feel giddy really really giddy.
