Hey all... Khasidel your latest SARPiverse newbie here...

Well... here's my first character... hopefully there isn't anything too far off the mark with it and it can be quickly fixed up if there's something wrong.

https://wiki.stararmy.com/doku.php?id=characters:yamatai:tachihara_reika

For the moment, I can be most easily contacted by PM if you need to get a hold of me. I've got the next two weeks off work, so I'll be checking my mailbox regularly and I'll have all the time i will likely need to get this character up to speed, I hope.

I'll purchase the equipment and add the inventory for the character tomorrow morning.

You're new and you already have art for your character?? Whoa.

It's not quite exactly the look for the usual star army uniform, but I don't think you'll see Wes (the site's admin and he person in charge of the Yamatai faction) complain about it, especially considering how it flatters certain front and center elements - then again, it also seems to be a SAINT uniform and it's not like they have that firmly established standards for their gear. She's also one quite muscular lady.

I'm unsure that a SAINT intelligence operative (especially the black ops style) is that much of a good idea for a new player, but the art alone shows already a large investment in that venue. I suppose making her an intelligence officer would have her be able to fit the niche usually held by science officers in combat plots with a tactical lean to it.

Or, maybe you can actually find some people to play SAINT agent with if getting on a plotship is not your immediate focus. I think Nashoba handles some SAINT leadership, and DocTomoe plays the only active SAINT-affiliated player character.

...I could swear I've seen that artstyle somewhere before.

Yeah, I couldn't spot any real images for SAINT field gear on the wiki so I went for a kind of stealthy bodysuit design that I thought would probably be acceptable.

As for the art style, I'm actually a only a so-so artist myself and I usually have to heavily reference other peoples work to make anything even halfway decent... and it takes me ages to make anything. That image I'll admit is heavily based on the work of a guy that goes by the handle Blackmyst... you might have seen some of his art before if you visit the website http://www.drowtales.com, in the Space Age sci-fi comic there. Though you have to pay to view stuff in that section of the site.

I was planning on applying the character for a position on the Eucharis- the wiki says there is an available position for an Intelligence Operative- assuming I managed to get the character approved here first.

Ah. I suspected it'd be Drowtales. Space Age does have a preview too. I got character art done for an NPC villain from the person that drew Demon Painter myself.

Personally, I've a really good feel on your bio. You wrote it fairly well and it's obvious you invested a lot of time and research in this. I'd see your chances of getting on a plotship such as Eucharis as pretty good. I know if my own plot allowed me to pick players, I'd be favorably inclined too.

My worry is that your bio might be a bit too ambitious for your own good as a newly arrived member with this being your first character. Your character is painted as extremely competent and that sometimes backfires on new players as writing "is a kung-fu master" and actually writing it out well during the roleplay are two different things. I've seen many players faceplant there when their esteem of their character's ability did not match the impression of the GM in charge and might not pull through contextually in the situation at hand. Death or humiliation typically follows. ^_^;

Another is that most of your specialized skillset as a black ops agent might not see all that much use on a plotship... where I personally believe more intelligence-related tasks would find the character see more use and participation in such a setting. Not that what she has isn't good in a just-in-case scenario (since not all plots have characters ideal to perform the things your character does - which might be why the Eucharis needs one), but I think there would be way to maximize her participation by putting more emphasis on other talents more in the veins of an intelligence officer rather than an operative. I personally believe it'd be more plotship friendly for you.

Actually that uniform is pretty close to the idea behind the Saint Operative Field Uniform

As the creator of the SOFS, I wouldn't mind using it there, but the image needs to be moved to the wiki, no images hosted from other sites is a rule.

The skill-set I chose is admittedly most suited for planet-side missions; I was thinking the character could have a number of uses on planets, stations or in away missions in enemy ships- scouting behind enemy lines for the friendly military force, sabotaging equipment and vehicles to reduce enemy opposition, attempting to assasinate enemy commander's or other VIP's whilst trying not to get killed in the process in order to cause enemy confusion. Infiltration of fortified areas for the purposes of data extraction, planting false information or sabotage, or maybe helping to rescue captured personnel, etc kinda sounded like fun. Plus, as you noted there are few if any other characters of the type around (not that I noticed anyway. The player character I spotted was Helen Klein, and she seems more geared towards being an Intelligence Officer / Interrogator sort of character rather than a field operative). There's quite a few uses a ship captain could put Reika to if it came down to it. Though just because she's trained to do it, doesn't mean she'll perform perfectly in the field (how often does a mission ever turn out 100% how one expects?) and the GM's are always free to add little problems or impediments to Reika's tasks to make things more interesting, difficult or flat-out impossible so that she'll have to back off.

Reika does have some but not all of the skill-set that would probably be required of an Intelligence officer; mostly information retrieval via computers and the ability to code and decrypt information. She doesn't have the Leadership skill that would be needed to fully qualify her for a position as an Officer (required for making tactical analysis's using available information and then making recommendations to the ships commanding officer, etc. Plus as a new character, I don't think she has the rank to be an officer of any kind)... but that's perhaps something the character can work towards down the line.

According to the wiki article, an Operative is expected to perform whatever ship-board duties are required of her; whilst she isn't trained for any specific ship work at present, Reika does have the basic training (Mathematics, Technology Operation, Fighting and Communication) required of all Star Army personnel. Actually, when supplemented by the SAINT training, the skill-set she has probably qualifies her to be able to work in an Information Technology / Information Warfare capacity- to a degree at least. I also don't doubt there's some empty position aboard any ship she could temp for with just a little extra training- she probably won't be perfect, but at least competent enough to get by and not be a burden on everyone (even if its just doubling as a cargo and supply specialist).

BTW Nashoba, I moved the image to be hosted on the wiki instead... didn't know how to do it at first. :)

Looks like you have all of this very well thought out.

I aired my comments and issues on the bio, and while I'm not a character bio reviewer, I do recommend Reika for approval.

Actually, just one question, in the Communication skill: Did you find this line or come up with it on your own?
She has also been trained by SAINT in the mental discipline of erecting barriers and shielding against external telepathic attacks should an encounter with a hostile telepath occur.

Actually I kinda made that one up on my own, because I thought it stood to reason that intelligence operatives and spies would be trained to resist interrogation of various types (and with there being telepathic species around, there would likely be methods introduced to prevent telepathic enemies from easily lifting secrets out of the minds of captured agents).

If I missed something or it contradicts established canonical information, tell me and I'll remove it.

Best to remove it. An NH-29 able to resist telepathic warfare is unsupported by canon. Counter-interrogation tactics normally used to resist things such as torture are completely acceptable, but NH-29 at present do not have the capacity to truly rebuff a psion in the SARP.

The good news is that a PC is extremely unlikely to ever see one.

Character approved

The next step to to request orders in the Star Army Communication Network forum. Conveniently, two other players are joining the Eucharis right now (Tylium and Gabriel) so you should be able to make an intro post at the same time they do (they're arriving via a shuttle).

Thankyou...

I've also finished up the inventory and made the correction to the communication skill set, Doshii Jun.
