[Task Force Phantom Prologue] Ambition

Location: Chiharu Star Fortress, in Orbit over Daichi. Five days after NMX attack on Daichi.

Tachibana Hayate’s eyes scanned the corridors of the star fortress as he walked. One grey and one green, and his gaze could have been almost disconcerting to anyone who didn’t know him. They were a statement. Something from his past that he had kept throughout his career – it set him apart from the rest, and he liked it all the more.

His katana was sheathed, held to his pistol belt where an equally-deadly pistol hung in its holster. They were a statement too.

He slowly led himself along the corridors, biding his time until he finally arrived at his destination. Being too early to a meeting with Mikasa Sorano-Taisho could have been taken badly, and being late reflected horribly to anyone of superior rank to him – a mere Taii. It grated on his nerves. It irritated him more that he knew little of the Taisho, or what the meeting was about. But he had his own plans – if he could get the favor an admiral, there was no limit to where his career could reach.

Better to try, than to wait until it’s too late. He thought, turning a corner.

There before him was the door to the Taisho’s office. With a sigh, he informed the AI of the star fortress that it should alert her of his presence. He would learn how to act soon enough.
Sorano sat at the end of the conference room table. She closed the personnel dossier in front of her.

I have damn few seasoned officers, taking one of them with potential for this assignment is risky. But Hokamo thinks he's the right man for the job. We will see how he reacts to the offer. she thought.

She looked out the window at the ships gathered; the fleet was still running on alert after the surprise attack five days ago. She looked at Todako sitting so calm given that he was recommending a soldier for a possible suicide mission.

Hokamo Todako-Chusa sat at the end of the table to her right. His blond hair was cut in a crisp high and tight fashion. Sorano had to look closely to see that he in fact did have eyebrows they were so pale. He relaxed in his chair and sipped his coffee. The black panels of his Type 30 uniform clearly marking him as a member of SAINT.

The station AI notified her that Todako had arrived, and with a mental nod to the AI she signaled for the AI to let him enter. "Tachibana-Taii, the Taisho is ready to see you, please enter." came the AI's voice from the speaker on the wall.

Tachibana stepped through the doorway, relieved that he wasn’t turned away. He cast a surprised glance at the director of special operations, sitting off to one side of the Taisho, but quickly put his attention to the Taisho. He bowed, saying “Good evening, Taisho. Chusa. I’m so glad you could work me into your busy schedule.”

He pulled up out of the bow, already thinking of the next thing to say – he was a very careful man.

"The Chusa and I have been keeping some late nights since the recent raid. Which is why we've asked you here. We have a proposition for you. Please take a seat." Sorano said motioning to the chair to her left.

All thoughts of his own plans stopped – for the moment – as he sat.

Could he be in trouble? No. He wouldn’t be brought to the Taisho without an armed “escort” to make sure he was in shackles before he was even in the same room with her. What then? What could it be?

“Proposition, Ma’am? What kind of proposition?” Will I like it?

Sorano watched as Hayate crossed the room and took his chair. It was apparent that her comment had rattled him, and it brought a wry smile to her face. "Hokamo-Chusa and I are putting together task force. One that is high risk, uncertain success potential, but one that is essential none the less. Since the NMX surged into the Kikyo sector almost a year ago all we have been doing is trying to slow them down and shore our defenses up, and we want to change that." She said.

"...You want to go on the offensive, or prepare for one." Hayate supplied.

Todako looked at Hayate and then at Sorano, "One of the things we desperately need is Intelligence. We know where the NMX forces are here in the Kikyo sector. But it’s only a portion of their force. We have no data on their home world, the infrastructure. What we are proposing is to put together a task force that will be one part Intelligence gathering, and one part hurting the enemy where it will do the most good. In their own backyard so to speak. I have suggested to Mikasa-Taisho that you might be the man for the job."

Tachibana Hayate narrowed his eyes, looking from the director to the Taisho. A hundred problems with the idea jumped into his mind, and it took a moment to look for anything good about it.

It would be a way to strike back at the NMX.
It would be a way to ease up pressure on the frontline.
But best of all, if he and that task force survived long enough, he was a shoe-in for a fast track promotion. That in itself to him made it almost worth it.

For a long few moments he said nothing, and then with his most dazzling smile he said: “How may I serve the Empire?”

"Think carefully about what you are saying. This is in all likelihood a suicide mission. But it is yours, if you want it." Todako replied.

“Oh, I am sure. Someone needs to do it, and I’m not sure if your second or third choice will accept either. I have to do this, and I don’t mind doing it.

"Very well. At the moment we do not have any ships for the Task Force, which will be called Phantom. So we will be building them for you. I want a list of your ship requirements on my desk by 0700 hours tomorrow. I will instruct the construction teams to put them on expedited priority." Sorano replied.

"We are working on some new equipment and will make that available to your group as soon as it is ready. After you have made your requisition, report to Personnel and start reviewing anyone who’s available. Lacking any candidates, we can always manufacture soldiers for you." Sorano said,

Hai! You will have your report, Ma’am. You will have your Task Force.” Hayate said, smiling. The NMX will have to dance to our tune now, Mikasa-Taisho. And before this war is over, I will have my promotion.
