[Yamatai] Chiaki-class Escort Destroyer

Well I am not sure what happened to what I posted about this ships main gun in the Approved forums. I am going to try to post something here

Anyways Jimmy volunteered to at least attempt a UV mapping. As antimatter technology affects all of us, I think it goes without saying that we should all give him any support you can ^^

Afterall, If it works maybe we can send something to wes so it looks like realistic bullets are coming out of the magazines as well as completely some old pages about antimatter.

Finally Doshii... I was curious... What are the Starship Stats for your Destroyer? <--- (Doshii pointed out they are already there. She has also address my other questions.)

To simply things here is the basic shape Jimmy is modeling: http://img227.imageshack.us/f/trapa.jpg/

-Points out the main gun issue again with the unusually high ROF for a SDR 5 weapon.-

I think Fred and Wes are doing work on this, too, so I would like the submission to be on ice until they give me the go-ahead.

Actually the ROF was changed to

Rate of Fire: Once every ten seconds

Little bits that might need consideration:

1- Seeing you changed the Armory for weapon lockers and mecha armament storage in the cargo bay, you probably should adjust the medical center's entry, which mentions its location based on the armory.

2- The Chiaki presently uses gravimetric STL engines. Seeing how it's built after Plumeria components, wouldn't Turbo Aether Plasma engines make more sense?

1. Right right; I'll get that one.

2. OK, this is actually a good question. The Plumeria's Turbo Aether Plasma engines are the bigger ones farthest out from the ship's fuselage. The inside ones are the weaker gravimetric engines.

https://wiki.stararmy.com/doku.php?id=st ... ry_engines

It doesn't matter to me one way or the other which I use, but if I'm following canon, the Chiaki's using the smaller gravimetrics. Not sure how to handle this one.

*headscratch* Oh, it's only the outer ones?

I thought Wes wanted to make a departure from the gravimetric STL drives because they were harder to define (and also were kind of close to how CDD worked, making them an odd choice for auxiliary thruster-based engines). That's why I assumed the Plumeria only had turbo aether plasma engines - I was apparently mistaken.

I don't see anything, though, saying the Plumeria's auxiliary engines are actually gravimetric ones. Am I just not looking around well enough?

No, I didn't see anything that directly said it, either. It's only inferred:

Because the small size of these STL engines has always been one of the design's limitations, the 1D upgrade features additional, more powerful sublight Turbo Aether Plasma engines.

Because TAP engines didn't exist when Sakura was around, I assumed they had to be gravimetrics, and that the "additional" meant the big two were being added to the smaller gravimetrics.

That sentence could be read to imply that the smaller engines are TAPs, too, just weaker. However, if they were lifted from the Sakura-class, then that reading doesn't wash.

Clarification: On the latest Plumeria, all STL engines are Turbo Aether Plasma.

Hey Doshii,

Range: Though the range is technically indefinite, the Chiaki has a practical range of about 10 light-years.

Care clarify why the ship has a range? It should be able to travel as far as it wants? So why is the practical range 10 light-years?

This would preclude the 2XF from using it to escort any of its ships since they jump considerably longer distances.

With Aether power, it's a lot easier to judge range via the time it can stay out without getting new supplies, generally a number of months.

Kai and Nashoba have a point, Doshii. It's probably more sensible to say the Chiaki's limited by its small cargo space (a.k.a. limited foodstuffs and maintenance components, reactor coolant and other supplies). However, in cases where the Chiaki is going around with more solid logistical assets (a cruiser carrying extra cargo to help resupply its Chiaki escorts, etc...) the escort vessel could go much further.

The practical range was based on speed, not "range," per se. Since the Chiaki has no fold, it can't respond very quickly to any incidents any farther, really, than 10 light years. That's why I said "practical."

I broke it down into "practical" and "effective", and explained both.

One small question. if there is no Soul Survivor Pod, is there really a need for a Type 30 Mental Backup and Transfer Unit?

Other than that if no one else has any issues, I plan to approve this tomorrow 24 Jul.

Definitely!

That's hardly only a system that benefits the Soul Savior pod only. If crew personnel perish but have taken ST backups beforehand, then they can be restored to life.

Doshii, I know this is a work in progress and that you're in no hurry to use it presently... but Nashoba has a new gunboat work-in-progress that looks like it might overlap roles with the Chiaki. Considering that, it might be a good idea to see it go active after all.

I've personally no problem with seeing the Chiaki-class approved so it can see deployment, as long as work can still be done to iron out some wrinkles and flesh out more details out of it.

* * *

Additional adjustments needed:

If I remember correctly, the Chiaki's damage capacity heading should read...
Hull: 8 (Size 1, Yama-Dura)
Shields: 20 / Threshold 2 (4 shield points)

It was a design decision to have the Chiaki remain in the Size 1 (10 SP) category in order to not toe in on the purpose and relative power of a Size 2 Plumeria-class light gunship. Despite the Chiaki being 20 meters longer than the highest length figure for Size 1 vessels, it's still pretty light and slim, justifying it sticking well in there.

The problem is Fred that the from the Type 30 MTBU page
On starships memory backups are stored in a Soul Savior Pod.

So without a Soul Savior Pod. Where would the backups be stored?

And for the record the Hayai-Class is not in competition with the Chiaki-Class. The Hayai-Class is a replacement for the Yuuko-class Gunboat which as the Wiki page says, only six were constructed, even though you will find lots more of them in the Fleets. And the Yuuko-class Gunboat was a flawed design, the Hayai-class when submitted will fill the Gunboat niche. Which is different than the Escort roll.
