A day in the city

Yoroko sighed as she exited exited the wardroom. The bridge shift had seemingly lasted forever to the former neko and she couldn't wait to get out and stretch her legs. Yoroko almost ran to the rec rooms, she wanted to do something fun, and she didn't care what it was. Even before she reached the room Yoroko was already shuffling through the various recreation programs that the Miharu could do. Day at the beach? Done it before. Aerobics? Not today. Flying, Skating, Soccer? Yoroko just wasn't satisfied with any of those, nothing there was even remotely thrilling. Buried deeply within the list of programs, something caught Yoroko's eye. The title was some Nepleslian horror culture reference or something, but the description fit exactly what Yoroko was looking for.

DeBalzac city has been overrun with a zombie infestation. Supposedly there are cities to the north that you can escape to, but you don't want to do that do you? You want to blow the brains out of every zombie you see. All that stands between you and a future of brainsucking is the few remaining residents of your pathetic little town, your freaking amazing combat skillz, and your trusty pistol. If you don't think you can handle killing hordes of zombies, you could always run away like a pansy.

Gather arms, gather people, kill zombies.

Yoroko smiled as she read the description, sure it was corny and almost pointless, but she needed to do something exciting. This'll be interesting. Yoroko thought as she requested that Miharu load the sim up. Hmm, I should play with someone...what about that new sprite....I think her name was Yuzuki. Yoroko had first considered Asher, but he seemed kinda distant and preoccupied since their visit to Malifur. "Ne, Yuzuki-san. Are you busy right now?" Yoroko asked the sprite telepathically as she walked into the sim room.

[[OOC: So, this is a Resident Evil style Zombie Bash. It's been spawned from a discussion that Gallant and I had on IRC. If you want to join in feel free, just remember, you start with a pistol (9mm, 2 clips(?))]]

"No, Mizuno-Hei. I will be right up."

A short span of time later found the sprite standing on the holodeck with Yoroko.

Apparently, Yuzu had been doing something with oil that hadn't ended perfectly and had tried to clean herself up with a rag. She had rolled the sleeves of her jumpsuit up to the elbow, and most of the mess was already gone from her forearms and hands, but there were dark splotches on her orange paneling where something mechanical had sprayed her and she had missed a streak on her forehead from where she had pushed her hair back once.

"Please forgive me, Mizuno-Hei," she offered as the sim started up and her appearance shifted to that of a young, dark-haired Yamataian in a green, black, and beige Nepleslian peacekeeper uniform. "I will clean up afterwards, I promise."

It took a couple of moments for the hologram to register with Yuzu. When it did, she looked down at herself and pulled at the jacket. Then she took the pistol out of its holster and examined it like she'd examine an antique. After a little experimentation she managed to trip the slide, but when she accedentally let it snap forward, she jumped a little bit.

"Ah... ah, right," she mumbled. Screwing her nose up a little and staring at the offending slide, she pulled it back completely and checked the magazine. Then she flicked it forward, tripped the safety, and pointed it to the sky expectantly, ready to level it at the first thing in sight that moved.

Nothing obliged her, but she did hear things. Rather gruesome things which suddenly she was wishing she could unhear. The pistol didn't seem quite enough to kill whatever was making those people scream.

"Anou... Mizuno-Hei?" she offered a little apprehensively, "What are we playing?"

Yoroko thought the sprite looked pathetic covered in oil, not the bad kind of pathetic of course, the kind of pathetic that was so pathetic it was actually quite cute. Yoroko stood there, now in matching attire, watching the cute neko test out her pistol.

Yoroko had just started checking her pistol when Yuzuki had asked what sim that they were doing. "Oh, this is.....I think it's called ZombieNaught or something. It's pretty simple, just shoot all the zombies you see. Oh yea...don't let them bite you or anything like that....I think you might turn into a zombie or something." Yoroko glanced around one last time once her pistol checked out. "Ready?"

"Um..." mumbled the sprite, but she didn't say anything afterwards.

Far down the street, Yuzu could just make out movement. Some of the closer screaming had stopped. When she squinted, she saw why. The closest civilian had been dragged down to the ground by what Yuzu had originally dismissed as a corpse. Her stomach lurched. Maybe if she'd been sitting in front of a console it would have been a little less shocking, but as a few more shapes joined the first, shambling towards the woman, she swallowed hard.

They were eating her.

Responding to some strange, paranoid whim, Yuzu turned around and looked behind herself.

Like lightning, she lowered her pistol into a stable firing position and emptied a magazine into the enemy's torso. It staggered backwards, chased by bullets, but it recovered and kept closing the distance. It was far too close for comfort, and there were more closing in on them from behind. Yuzu's first magazine clattered on the ground as she released it from the pistol's grip and snapped another one into place.

"Mizuno-Hei," she offered, a vague almost childish panic creeping into her voice, "We have a problem."

Yoroko had just become aware of the oncoming horde of zombies. "Un, a big problem Yuzuki-san." Yoroko said as she lowered her pistol into position and fired at the beasts heart, resulting in the same effect. "Perhaps we should run now." Yoroko was suprised that the beast had taken a full clip of ammunition without dieing.

Yuzu suddenly became very aware of time constraints. How long would it take the zombies at the other end of the street to notice the gunfire? Why didn't they have silencers? It was so loud. Right now, Yuzu had the overwhelming urge to be very quiet and to appear harmless and inedible. She couldn't manage either.

Taking a couple of steps back, she also realized that she had no idea where she was going at all. She glanced back to the other end of the street, then returned her attention forward. She kept her gun trained on the oncoming forms, but that was really only for her own comfort.

"This is a game you've played before, right, Mizuno-hei?" the sprite offered, clinging to hope and taking a few steps closer to her senior. "You know where to go right?"

*Crack crack crack*

The sound of a 9mm pistol from about six blocks away, more or less, could be heard. After a few minutes, an all-too-familiar welding goggle-wearing, silver-haired Yamataian popped around the corner, firing two more shots before moving a little ways up the road. Catching sight of the other two, he made a quick shout.

"New players! Great, I was getting bored of clearing the city on my own!"

"HALLOOO DOWN THERE!!!" Nevaraon yelled from above on a rooftop "Zombies' can't climb ladders i think." He pointed to the ladder he had used himself aparently.

Yoroko looked to Yuzu before speaking. "Eeeto....actually this is the first time I've played a game of this type at all Yuzuki-san. I have no clue where I'm going." Suddenly Yoroko heard the sounds of Denko's pistol fire. "Wueeh?!!? Noboru-san?!" Yoroko asked surprisedly before she remembered that they were still surrounded by a horde of zombies.

Grabbing Yuzuki Yoroko ran toward a ladder that had seemingly been left there. "Up that ladder Yuzuki-san!! Up!!" Yoroko said emphatically hoping that they would make it up the ladder before the zombies got there.

Up the ladder Yuzu went.

Really, you didn't have to tell her twice.

Halfway up, she glanced back down to Yoroko. Suddenly it occurred to her that Mizuno-Hei was probably more important than she was. She had the sudden urge to do something like provide cover fire, or pull Yoroko up with her, or something of that sort. Really, it should have been her holding the ladder, even though this was just a game. Listening to the other two players had reminded her of this, since she had forgotten it rather easily once it had started. Holograms were pretty real looking.

She scrambled the rest of the way up, positioned herself immediately, and took aim at the closest offending corpse. From a top-down, it was harder to get a bead, so she took a couple seconds and aimed it out right.

The bullet struck the already bullet-ridden Nepleslian in the center of his crown, and with a final moan, he went down and didn't get up again.

Meanwhile, Noboru quickly wheeled and tossed a kitchen knife into the temple of one of the zombies, which didn't do much other than penetrate the skull and hang there like an ornament. Wheeling around, he grabbed Yoroko by the shirt collar and hopped onto the ladder.

"C'mon, up you go now," He said, climbing up the ladder with three appendages, using his right arm to haul Yoroko up after him.

Nevaraon pulled out his pistol and provided covering fire for the climbing pair. He glanced at Yuzu and asked "You alright? You look a little scared."

(Is this ladder like a fire escape off some building or what?)

Three shots from another pistol came sounded not too far off from where everyone was scattering to climb.

A nepleslian woman was on on the other side of the street, fending off a couple zombies that were attempting to corner her. Her aim seemed to be slightly off for some reason, as if she was having trouble aiming with both hands. One of the three shots was off, but by a stroke of luck it hit the closest zombie in the forehead, dropping it like the bag of bones it was. The second one was hit once in the shoulder and the second hit it's leg, causing it to trip and fall.

Her eyes found the other players gunfire. (As it was a bit hard to see in all the smoke and fire.) Taking the opportunity of disabling her attackers, she sprinted as fast as she could to the other side of the street towards them. She didn't see one of the ghouls that was hidden by nearby wreckage though.

It weakly grabbed her, which she responded by throwing it's arms off to the side and planting a sold kick on it's torso. It reeled back and fell down, but as always, it slowly got back up with a moan. It was all the opening she needed to get away from it though.

She stopped below the ladder, suddenly having a short coughing fit. It wasn't clear whether the smoke would actually impair a player's breathing or if the player herself was having trouble with something. Or it could just be an NPC for as much as anyone could tell.

About three rungs from the top of the ladder, Noboru noticed the newcomer. With a mighty heave, Noboru lifted Yoroko up to the people on the roof and then slid back down to ground level.

"You need some help?" He asked, drawing his pistol and killing the zombie that the girl was running from.

"No," Yuzu lied. It didn't sound particularly convincing. She grabbed onto Yoroko's arm and pulled her up onto the ledge almost singlehandedly, using the activity to disguise the fact she was shaking a little bit. It was kind of embarassing.

"Mizuno-Hei?" she asked, "Are you hurt?"

Yoroko nodded numbly in confirmation to Yuzu, she was slightly surprised by Noburo's dexterity and strength. Once on top of the ladder Yoroko stood bewildered for a second before she noticed the zombies starting to mill toward the ladder. "Cover her!" Yoroko almost screamed as she pulled her own pistol and shot at the zombies that were getting close to Amelia. The first shot surprised Yoroko, the former neko had fired an NSP before, but NSPs didn't have kickback like the pistol did and as a result her shot missed by a little.

"Ok, just checking." Nevaraon's lower hands and tail twitched in anticipation. His aim was fair enough to take out a few of the closer zombies. "Man, I hope they can't climb ladders.

(Yeah, it is a fire escape ladder, guess i should have said that. My bad.)

From another direction relative to the building that the small group of players was climbing, a couple of blocks away, a mob of zombies was milling about aimlessly. Occasionally one would find something or some poor NPC and begin feeding, such as was currently happening.

The five-year-old child shrieked as the sharpened phalanges descended toward him. Then his hair moved as if a breeze had blown by...the zombie stared at the kid blankly as the back of its skull slid to the ground, followed quickly by the rest of the head. The body tumbled to pieces like a slick jig-saw puzzle in surprisingly clean fashion. The boy watched in wonder as the other zombies nearby met similar fates.

Then he was staring into a pair of golden-yellow eyes with sclera white enough to seem to glow. The face the eyes were set in was as pale as that of the zombies, but was free of injuries or blemishes. The child became aware of a tingling sensation at the base of his neck and froze, another scream choked in his throat. Then the face was gone and another breeze brushed through his hair.

A wet feeling began to spread over his shoulders and his back and chest. Looking down, he wondered when his red shirt had become so wet...

---

A thin, pale figure wearing a black t-shirt, clean white gi pants, and calf-high combat boots with the gi legs untucked came to rest in an alleyway near the newbies. Nelew was becoming fond of this game. Endless zombies, endless practice dummies. The fact they rarely fought back was becoming dull, until she had found out that there were other players in this city with her. Maybe they would make this time more productive? To make things harder for herself, and to prevent...what was the term they had used? Griefing? Ganking?...Nel had made it a new rule to request the participation of any player characters she found. Although the hunt was inevitable for them, Nelew would only 'kill' her prey after asking if she may do so.

Speaking of which...

The reports from three...four pistols echoed from the walls around her. Nel looked up and tilted her head a little. Turning so her side was near a wall, she hopped up and pushed off from that wall with her left foot toward the other wall on her right. Repeating this wall-jump technique quickly got her to the roof of the building across from the one the players were taking refuge on. Overlaying her normal vision with thermal, Nelew crouched on the edge of her roof and watched the group through the walls. Two of them seemed rather experienced, but two of the others appeared to be newbies. Taking high ground was a good idea, though, at least they had that right.

Although most of her vision modes were useless in the computer-generated world (and would be anyway, against zombies without body heat), thermal vision was still somehow available and proving very useful in picking out real players. Nel wondered if the game had thermal goggles stashed somewhere, otherwise why would it replicate that particular aspect? Moving that thought aside for later investigation, the pale woman dropped back to the ground, making sure that her presence had not been noticed...but she was on the other side of a wall, of course they hadn't seen her. If they did, her coloration would probably have her shot on sight. Fun as that was, it wasn't part of her plan at the moment.

Maybe she would help them escape...clear the front line so they no longer felt endangered? And certainly start a little curiosity as those zombies suddenly were dismembered with no apparent cause. She shook her head. No, better to wait and see first.

((Okay, sorry for the insanely long intro. If you guys don't want to PvP, no biggie. She can join your group and I'll work in a handicap for her.))

[ Bring it on. ;) ]

Yuzu resumed her firing position, taking aim. Yea, this was getting a little more intense, but it was better with a number of people at her back. It was good to remember it was a game. Just a game.

The zombies were closing in on (what was recently identified as) the fire escape, and there were still folks climbing it. So far, the combined efforts of the people providing covering fire had prevented the undead from even trying the ladder, but by the looks of it, that was about to change.

She resumed picking them off, one by one, until she suddenly stopped doing so.

The empty magazine dropped heavily on the rooftop, displacing a couple of bullet casings, and Yuzuki snapped her second magazine into place.

Ten in the gun in the beginning, and ten in each extra magazine she had been provided at the start; Yuzuki was on her last ten bullets.

"Anou, Mizuno-Hei," she said quietly, "We can't kill them all like this."

Meanwhile, somewhere in an abandoned building just next to where all the others were... the sound of cricket bat against skulls could be heard with the satisfying sound of 'WHOCK!!', sending zombie guts splattered against walls and ceilings, and sometimes sending the heads far and fast enough to score sixes!

(Cricket Terminology Note: A Six happens when the ball is hit so far that the batsman is able to score six runs during that time. This also happens if it goes into the stands or over them.)

'WHOCK!! WHOCK!!' More smashing of rotten flesh and groaning bones as the figure burst out onto the emergency staircasing running down the side of the building.
