RP: YSS Genesis [Episode One] All the Queen's Men

"Yea, yeah. Nuff with formalities. The name's Yokoyama. Yokoyama Omitsu. But most people call me Yoko. Or Omitsu. Most Neppies don't get the thing about Yamataian last surnames goin befoa the given name." she explained, stopping in her tracks again, now at the edge of the mess hall.

A look of absolute terror was now on the engineer's face as realization dawned upon her. As the thought settled into her mind, both her hands came up to cover her mouth. "Now that I thinka bout it...which one's my given name, and which one's my surname?!" she nearly yelled, hands grasping her hair.

"Is my given name Yokoyama, or is it Omitsu, cause all Yamataian sounds the damn same to me, yaknow?!" the Nepleslianized Geshrin spoke in a frustrated panic.

Rüd wasn't ignoring those around him- Shinon and Fieke, that is; in fact, he was almost too heavily devoted to all the other soldiers and crew to really register they'd struck up conversation. By the time he was going to answer, a 'situation' had presented itself: some idiot pilot had gone wandering off.

"He had better find his way back, or be found- unless he wants to have the word 'TRUANT' stamped on his record in bold red letters," the Nightwalker bluntly announced. "And in the next hour or two. Once all that cargo is loaded, we're leaving, and I'm closing 'er up." He added a shrug as if to answer an unspoken question. "It's really no loss on our end. Plenty of other pilots would kill to have his position- and I'm sure they'd remember their discipline too."

"Ahh- Umm.. Y,Yes Ma'am" Shimei nervously answered Shinon, before looking quite cowed as Rued started asking her questions a bit less gingerly than Shinon had.

"W-well, Um, he was.. Kinda tall, and he had, um , he had sunglasses on... and..." Shimei turned around as if to get the others to pipe up, but they all suddenly made themselves keenly interested in things such as their fingernails, or the ceiling.

**********

Suddenly, an announcement was made over the PA- it was in Larai-Taii's voice. "Would all crew please report to the mess? Miss Merkur and I shall be giving you a briefing in there soon."

some of the crewmembers quickly dropped whatever they were doing and headed to the elevators to make it to the second deck, while others decided to wait out the rush.

Fieke soon found the Geshrin Engineer's hands on her shoulders, grasping her tightly and shaking her about like a rag doll. "What am I gonna do? What am I gonna do?! I don't even know which one's my own name!" She shouted at the Abwehran woman, a frantic look in her eye. "All these yeas an I don't even know what my first name is! Who am I?!"

"Say somethin Fieke!"

Yumeko looked up from her breakfast and noticed a commotion being made. She recognized the voice and stood up, waving at the flustered Geshrin. "Yokoooooo! Hey Yokooooooo! Good mornin' there! How ya doin'? Are ya hangin' with some friends? Mind if I join ya's?"

The neko stood up with her dish already in hand and began walking over cheerfully. She had begun moving before any reply had been given.

"Huh?" Yokoyama Omitsu perked up. Someone was calling the Geshrin by her potentially incorrect first name! The woman rolled up a sleeve and turned towards the voice. "Oh, why I aughta!" she started, furious. As here eyes settled on who it was however, Yoko quickly felt sheepish at wanting to pummel that harmless person. 'What was her name again?' she wondered. Either way, it didn't matter; this person was exactly who she needed!

The head engineer quickly abandoned her escort and hurriedly scurried over to the Neko. "Ey! Good to see ya again." she greeted Yumeko. "I'm doin fine, but I gots this, er, jam I'm in. Can ya help me?"

Shinon was about to explode on Rüd, but Shimei talked first. That gave Shinon some time to cool off. When Shimei was clearly done Shoi speaked ot her again. "Do you at least know his name? Think about it." She asked the nervous neko and turned to Abwehran.

"Mister," she started with tone that should show that she won't take any shit. "First thing. This is Star Army matter. Second you are not closing her up until all Star Army personell are on board. Only one who can to it is Laraii-taii. Are we clear about that? Or are you captain of this ship? Did not think so. Other things as I can see you have the lowest rank in the Orisec there is. I even doubt you could close it down anyway. Now pleasse let me deal with this and if I will need any hellp I will ask. BUt well... if you see any tall fellow with sunglasses send him my way. Am I clear?" She said. She knew she was stirring trouble right now, but she just won't take any shit from some Origin worker. He should keep his nose out of Star Army bussiness. Civilians playing cocky. Just what she needed.

Rüd just laughed at Shinon. "Low rank or not, your Laraii-Taii promoted me to head of security- and I'm sure you don't need me to tell you one of the primary functions of this door and ramp is security. You handle your business however you want, but I'm going to handle my business the way I want. Once this briefing is over," he thumbed in the direction of the mess, "We're closing up this ship. Now we have a briefing to get to, ma'am."

Surprisingly, the word ma'am was not spoken with any sarcasm. In fact, his whole tone of voice was very odd for an argument, if this could be called an argument. Rüd's tone was calm and even respectful, but also stalwart- he would not budge on his position unless some authority demanded it, in which case he would gladly oblige.

He left the doorway for the mess hall, and stood beside the main entrance, surveying those already present and examining those that entered. However, it was not with a suspicious nor scrutinizing gaze, but rather one of curiosity and intrigue. The Nightwalker wanted to know who these people were- as people rather than ranks and careers.

Shinon had to admit. She was tryin to get to him and he did not let her. Well played sir, she thought. She gave a little nod just to herself and looked and Shimei and her comrades. "Okay Shimei-hei, let's head to the briefing for now. Our lost soldier might be there. We will go looking for him afterwards if not." SHe said. Shinon sis not knwo if AI has full crew list yet. She could find the guys name that way. She cursed herself for the fact that she did not ask for list of crew yesterday.

"Whatcha needs Yoko?" Yumeko replied while settling herself on the seat across from and next to her escort. "Good mornin' everyone!" she then greeted to the others present.

Yumeko...so blissfully ignorant of Yokoyama Omitsu's plight! Whether the Neko realized this or not, it made her the perfect go to person in this case for the agitated Geshrin.

After all, how could she stay angry at a face like that?

"Er, yeah...you see, I've been living in Nepleslia for most of my life, and now I'ma little confused over something concerning the Yamataian bit of my background, yaknow?" The Geshrin started. "So...what's my first name exactly? Yokoyama, or Omitsu?" She asked.

"Cause Nepleslia and Yamatai both do it backwards."

Yumeko blinked a couple times as she listened to Yokoyama's concern. "I thought Yokohama was ya first name when we met." she replied first before she took another bite from her eggs. "Can't ya just ask ya mom and pop or check ya family records?"

A dark cloud began to loom over the Geshrin as her cautiously inquisitive demeanor melted away. With a slow deliberateness, she reached out and placed both her hands on the Neko's shoulders before drawing her in close to speak right in her ear, voice deathly silent.

"Not everybody's parents are still alive."

"Mine consisted of a group of scientists an' a hemosynth chamber. They don't exactly call or write ta me." Yumeko whispered back.

"Why we whisperin'?" she asked cluelessly.

Yokoyama Omitsu's mouth dropped open.

The Geshrin couldn't help but simply stare at the Neko, her perception of time, space, life, the meaning of everything - shattered. Needless to say, it took a few moments for her to collect herself. "Nothin. Nothin at all." She finally replied, taking her hands off the Neko.

"Maybe youa the wrong person to aska bout it..."

"Okey dokey pokey!" Yumeko replied somewhat too cheerily. She then motioned again to the security detail escorting Yoko. "So who are ya friends?"

Before anyone could answer Yumeko, the PA system came to life once more. "All crew, this is the last call to the briefing. Everyone must be in the mess, so we may begin. Tardiness is not appreciated." Larai-Taii's voice called over the speakers, cutting off nearly all of the chatter for a moment.

Those in the Mess would notice it had filled considerably in the last two minutes, and those not yet in it would notice that they were in the minority, and should probably get a move on; a few did, hustling toward the elevator.

Shinon was already headed for the elevator when she could Taii over the speakers. She frowned and looked at nekoes following her. "We should hurry up a little troopers." She said boarding the elevator and coming down. Then it was just a while of fast paced walk before she got into mess.

Yoko nodded with the Neko; okey-dokey indeed. It was probably for the best that the Gehshrin go by whatever she wanted anyways. Who cared about a name? It wasn't, like, your identity or anything. Still, she quirked up her eyebrow when Yumeko asked who the 'other' was.

"Huh? Someone else?" she asked. "Who did I have come al - oh yea! " Yoko thrust her thumb over her shoulder at the Abwehran. "This hea's Fieke I thinks. Whata bout her?"

As soon as everyone was inside the mess, the lights dimmed slightly, except for at one end of the mess hall. At that end of the mess hall, Larai-Taii and Sierra Merkur could be seen, The Jet-haired acting captain seemed to be readying himself for a speech, his communicator held up to act as a microphone. The redhead executive next to him was adjusting her glasses while fiddling with her clipboard, apparently trying to gather her own thoughts for when it was her turn to speak.

After a few moments, the Taii cleared his throat and began speaking. "Greetings, everyone, and welcome to the first major Joint Venture between the Star Army of Yamatai, and Origin Industries. This project is more or less an experiment, although officially it will go down as a training exercise. You see, the Star Army of Yamatai has done things on its own for so long that many believe we have forgotten how to work with others. As a result, tensions are high with our neighboring nations, even with a war that threatens all of us bringing everybody together. What this experiment is intended to do, is to show the Administration that we, the Star Army, are capable of working well with others.

I understand that there are several barriers, ones that are not physical but all too real, keeping us from working well. I have observed these barriers, even in the scant hour before this meeting occurred. My first act as acting captain will be to effectively strip you all of Rank. Instead of Rank, we will now be identified by our jobs. As a crew, every member is equally important, the only difference being our jobs. My Job is to organize and Direct, some of our jobs are to repair the ship, and yet others to provide security, and still others to affirm the protection of the crew.

It will be difficult at first, not hiding behind our ranks, but I believe we can accomplish this. We should still all understand that those in charge of us are still in charge, but those in charge should not see those that they organize and direct as lesser than they are, am I understood? This goes the same for interactions with Origin's crew- They are equally as important as you are. Do not treat them as if they are less."

Once finished speaking, Seth stepped back, and handed his communicator to Sierra, whom seemed almost surprised to see it replacing her clipboard, but she caught herself quickly, and stepped forward, looking around.
"What the Taii has said is true, Or rather, What Mister Laraii here has said is true. We are one crew of one ship, and should act like it. The only distinction between Origin and The Star Army should be the colors on our uniforms. Aside from that, you will all be eating, working, and rooming together, sharing facilities, workspace, and finally, My hope is you will share memories together. We from Origin are not a military, but I do expect you to hold yourselves to a Professional discipline, and to treat everyone as equals, and to defer to others not based on any kind of preconceptions of rank, but rather on their authority granted by their occupation, and how they hold themselves as a person.

Our Journey will begin in a few short days, and so I hope that by that time, you will all have learned to work together. For now, however, we do have a slight problem. Mister Laraii has informed me that one of the Star Army crew members has gone missing in transit. Of those of you whom arrived yesterday, being the most familiar with this ship and installation, could I please ask you to form a group and meet me outside in the hallway, as this is an important matter that we need to take care of."
With that, Sierra handed the communicator back to Seth, and retrieved her clipboard, then proceeded to shove her way through the mass of chattering people who were now making a bit of bustle and noise in reaction to what their two leaders had just said. before long, however, the determined redhead was outside of the Mess, in the hallway waiting for those she had asked for.
