RP: YSS Eucharis [Mission 11.3] Back Into Chaos

Yaichiro blinked, watching the onion volcano with interest and pleasure...he loved onions, and this was just all the more interesting. The aroma of onions was nice too, as he saw the strange preparation and couldn't help but give a smile. It was a small smile, but present, and still larger than he would have been able to relay four years ago.

The officer blinked when he noted the new arrivals. He gave them a nod and looked up their profiles...one was a veteran Eucharis person returning to the ship from being an instructor, and the other was a new SAINT Operative. Helen's replacement? Or perhaps an apprentice that was training judging by her rank.

He began to eat, politely, though he was particularly hungry. He pondered the situation while wondering if his presence would throw off the returning Heisho, and wondering what to expect from the attractive-yet-dangerous SAINT Operative.

Junko had sat quietly eating her fried rice. She had always been a light eater and the rice was enough – and more than delicious enough – to satsify her. Still, she was happy to stick around given the show the Taisa was putting on. She was quite impressed and surprised at how what had at first seemed a picture of domestic virtue had so rapidly become theatrical.

Movement by the stairs caught her eye and she glanced over to see two newcomers. The glance rapidly became a double-take as she recognized and then heard the Taisa call out to Ramiro. It was odd and somehow slightly comforting to see her comrade again; it seemed like ages since she, Ramiro, and Sune had all first met before joining the Eucharis.

“Valencia-Heisho, it has been some time,” she called out. “Welcome back.”

Takeyu glanced over his shoulder at the newcomers, his eyes focusing on the newer SAINT crewmen. Interesting... he thought with an amused grin before going back to eating his rice, after a moment he stopped and blinked once before glancing back and realizing that one of the crewmen wasn't new but rather an oldie coming back to the ship. Ramiro Trinidad Valencia, I wonder how he's been... he pondered silently to himself.

He didn't know the Nito Heisho since the soldier had left the ship a short while after he joined. "Welcome back Nito Heisho," he said casually.

Wardroom

Nathaniel was the last of the three shuttle passengers to enter the wardroom; the room itself remembered him a bit about how most of his former ships looked like. Due to the fact he wasn’t briefed on the layout of the ship, he took a few wrong turns, and appeared a bit later then the other two. “Not a great first impression” he muttered to himself.

That Nathaniel was late, was due to the fact that shortly after disembarking from the shuttle he noticed that his right wing had become completely numb. So he waited a few seconds to stretch the wing out, and remove the numbness a bit. Spaceflight wasn’t really a problem for him, but he always disliked the chairs most of the shuttles had, as they where never designed to accommodate two large wings.

The design of the ship gave him some trouble due to the fact he was used to the layout of Elysian ships. Even after conversing with the computer about the location of the Taisa and asking how to proceed he still kept mistaking the layout with the ships he served on before this one. He promised himself to take some extra time to study the layout of the ship.

He walked towards the table and stood at attention. “Santo-Hei, Nathaniel Kygra. reporting for duty ma’am!” Shortly after saying that he noticed the scent of chicken. And he immediately had some flashbacks from the transport he took before he embarked on the shuttle. The passengers also had some chicken for lunch, and one of them started to joke that they could also try to fry him, if they needed more. The thought alone made him laugh within his mind, but he knew this was not the time to show emotions like that on his face.

Ramiro had immediately known where to find the Taisa and her crew on a down day like this. His entrance into the wardroom began with him dropping his bags and calling out, "Mom! I'm home!" He casually strolled over to the table with the whole crew before bowing to Hanako and then to Sune. "Taisa, Chui." He said the second rank with a big grin on his face. "And thank you, it's good to be back. Lot's of new faces though. Of course I remember the three regulars," Ramiro indicated Hanako, Sune, and Junko, "And I believe you two were just coming aboard when I left," This time he indicated Takeyu and Yaichiro. "So from what I've heard planet-side I've missed quite the adventures, and it seems that we have some living proof of that, isn't that right old friend?" Ramiro grinned at Sune and nodded in his direction as he said this.

Wardroom

When the captain acknowledged her arrival and invited her to take a seat Reika responded with a kind smile and said, "Thank you, Ketsurui-taisa," in a sincere, polite voice. She moved across to one of the empty places and from that vantage point, more closely examined the faces of the assembled crew members.

Reika's neko ears twitched slightly as she overheard some of the crew seated around the table greet Valencia Ramiro and he familiarly returned the greetings- he was the man she had seen earlier on the shuttle and whose name had previously eluded her. After their initial welcoming of Ramiro, most of those seated at the table briefly seemed to turn from their food to give Reika a quick cursory examination, before returning to their delicious looking meal.

Valencia Ramiro-heisho... starship operations judging from the grey panels of his uniform, Takeda Junko-heisho and Nayacesen Takeyu-heisho... both technicians, Jalen Sune-chui... ships science officer and Eucharis' executive officer, Helen Klein-shosa... a sempai from SAINT... Kage Yaichiro-chusa... ship's engineer. Mentally Reika ticked off the names of crew present against her memory, adding Nathanial to the list when he arrived just a little bit later.

Reika's curious gaze settled upon the adolescent appearing blue-haired captain of the Eucharis, Ketsurui Hanako, who was surprisingly dealing out food with an expert hand in the capacity of cook. Somewhat hesitantly, Reika acquired some rice and a portion of the remaining shrimp for the empty plate in front of her and took a small bite, savoring the flavor.

Sune smiled brightly at the site of his first friend on the Eucharis. Hard to believe it has been almost two and a half years since the two of us walked onboard the ship. he thought.

"Valencia-Heisho, it is good to see you my friend. You have missed a lot of excitement while you were off teaching. When we get some time I will let you know what all you missed out on. For now pull up a seat, the Taisa is dazzling us with her culinary talents." he said.

"That sounds excellent. And I think I shall pull up a seat, I never was aware that the Taisa could cook, but from my faith in her and her apparent expertize with alcohol and onion I feel that it can't hurt to take the food for a test run." Ramiro pulled up a chair from the nearby table and began to fill his plate with whatever food happened to already be cooked. "You know, it's been quite a while since I've had a warm meal, one doesn't appreciate how terrible cafeteria is at training facilities until they have to relive the experience." Ramiro began eating and looked up. "Fantastic Taisa!" He paused to let the food sink in. "So how have you guys been doing. Last I remember of the crew the Taisa had a spray-tan on and the Chui had the woman I fancied on his lap."

Taisa Hanako blushed when Ramiro brought up those old memories. "Now that is something I have not thought about in a long time. I have been managing, but sometimes I wonder if I have become boring!" She handed out the steak next, starting with the rare and distributing more as it reached each person's desired level of internal brownness. Next came the chicken. Each was served in a light, tasty sauce with diced mushrooms.

As she started to clean up, Hanako got down to business.

"We are on the way to meet a newly-discovered race called the Gartagens. Like the Azoreans, they were discovered by captain Toshiro of the SS Yggdrassill. It is possible the NMX are in the area, and we have experience with first contact so we've been asked to go rather than an unarmed diplomacy ship...although I have requested a diplomacy ship to join us. For this mission I am hoping to have us pick out specific aspects about them that each of us will focus on. If all of us do our research on our areas of study, we could find out a great deal about them. First, I need someone to analyze the communication we received so far. Reika, could you please break it down for us?"

Reika set down her utensils before nodding softly and then speaking. "As you wish, Taisa." She had already read the Star Army Intelligence brief about the Gartagens which she had received upon her assignment to the Eucharis. Reika had studied it thoroughly whilst awaiting the arrival of the shuttle that had brought her aboard.

"The Gartagens are indigenous to Gartaga within the Shara System. The planet is located within the previously unexplored territories galactic north-east of Yamatai, just a short step beyond the Abwehran Star Empire. That's about 65 light-years from the core of the Empire, or just under 2 hours away from Veronica if I remember the Eucharis' hyperspace specifications correctly.

According to the communique sent by Commodore Yuki Toshiro, the Gartagen's appear to be a militaristic warrior-centric civilization; however it should be noted that beyond that single fact, the full nature of their governmental organization, cultural views and societal structure remains unknown to us. We also only have partial data concerning one starship class and shuttle type, with a small amount of data on their biology with images of their general appearance obtained through the use of non-invasive scans. You will be able to access this information at your leisure whilst we are en route.

Thus far there has been no hostilities initiated, and though their delegation aboard the SS Yggdrasil were somewhat guarded in their behavior and gave away only limited information about themselves and their goals, Commodore Toshiro's perception of them was that of a species desiring colonial expansion into nearby systems, but also wishing for peaceful relations with neighbors. Their delegation has apparently agreed to the conditions stated within the 'Rights of Early Contact,' and complete linguistic data as well as civilian-level access to the PANTHEON network has been exchanged.

However, because things are never easy, there are a few additional issues complicating the establishment of further relations with the Gartegan:

First, their space lies within the Abwehran Empires claimed region of expansion. The Abwehran have been informed of the Gartagen contact and have made plans for their own delegation to be sent. The Abweran have also graciously allowed the Yamatai Empire to continue to pursue diplomatic relations unhindered despite their own prior claim to the region in which the Gartagen inhabit.

Due to the present war, the Abwehran intend that their envoy be conveyed by battlecruiser with a three ship destroyer escort. Before they are dispatched it has been requested that our own delegation determine whether the Gartagen will consent to such a large military presence in proximity to their space and if not, what changes to their security will need to be implemented.

Secondly, if we are assuming that they have been honest in their statements, their only contact with any star-faring species has been with the Yamatai Empire so far and they have no knowledge of the Mishhuvurthyar, their forces, or the danger that they pose. Our delegation will need to properly convey the seriousness of the threats they will likely face in the future. Despite the high levels of security and encryption that have been utilized when conveying information about the Gartagen, it is nonetheless possible that the Mishhuvurthyar will learn of them soon if they haven't already, and that NMX and SMX craft will be in the mission arena.

Finally, whilst Commodore Toshiro has conveyed his recommendation to the Gartagen that they not seek to expand towards territories already occupied by the Yamatai Empire, the Abwehran and our other neighbors, he did not have the authority to do more than make recommendations. It will be up to our delegation and that of the Abwehran to properly negotiate which areas of space are available for settlement for each nation, and if at all possible to do so without a break-down of relations or an escalation to hostilities."

Reika smiled softly, "That's the essentials. We certainly have our work cut out for us." She leaned back in her chair slightly, watching the reactions of her crew mates to see how they would each respond to the information she had presented.

Ramiro leaned forward in his seat, elbows on the table, as he heard the information come in. He pondered the information, silently laughing in his head at the thought of teaching the Gartagens the basic training information the he had recently taught on Yamataian foreign relations. Apart from the teaching aspect, he tried to get his head into the mindset of an operator again.

"If I may Taisa, I believe that one of the first things that we should do is raise the awareness of the current intergalactic incident with the Mishu because we have no idea when they will show up, or if they're already aware of the Gartagen's existence, and the most valuable thing that we can use the Gartagen's for is as an ally against the NMX. Secondly, if the Gartagens have an issue with the Abwehran's current diplomatic requirements, then there is the potential of lending either the Eucharis or another nearby ship as a security team, simply because the Abwehran's wouldn't dare open fire on or near a Yamataian vessel.

And lastly, I feel along with the other recommendations, one of the first measures that should be taken care of after the Gartagen's familiarization with the NMX is requesting the we be allowed to sweep the surrounding planets and systems for any unwanted NMX, and that the Eucharis be allowed to keep its weapons armed and ready in case of any surprises or unexpected entanglements.

And on that note, at least while diplomatic relations are being conducted, I feel it would be in the bets interest to update the ship's computers to regard the Gartagen vessel as friendlies and untargetable to our computers. A measure such as that will demonstrate out intent at peace to the Gartagen's and may give the some peace of mind, since it was stated that they are a militaristic species."

He looked up at the Taisa after he was finished with a very poker-faced look. "These are just my two cents, and I apologize if you see any flaws in my suggestions."

Takeyu merely listened attentively, waiting for his chance to chime in if he had any suggestions. After hearing what Reika had said, he was now more curious than ever to meet this new race and see what they had.

He replayed what Reika said, taking in the conversation and listening to it several times, in the effort to see if any questions or concerns would come from it.

Of course, he already had one concern. I doubt the NMX will remain blind to their presence, they always seem to have eyes everywhere... he said as his thoughts trailed off as he mentally began recalling the events of the YSS Freedom rescue and Mitsuya.

OOC: Link to the NNN Article -- viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6245

"The NMX definitely know the Gartagens exist, as it has been broadcast by the Nepleslians on civilian news networks in spite of the care the civilian attempted to utilize." Yaichiro added, with an imperceptible mild tone of dislike.

"A quick query returns an NNN article describing how the Nepleslians have contacted the Gartagens and had them agree to an "alliance proposal", but the details of it are not discussed. Two Nepleslian ships are to be dispatched and NAM has a contract worked out. Nepleslia seems to hope that the Gartagens will be useful in defending their homeworld. The communication from the civilian contact indicates he is either unaware of this communication or it has happened since the data was sent.

For a government that refused to sign the Rights of Early Contact so as to shield control of everything in their area of expansion, Nepleslia seems quick and ruthless in taking advantage of the opportunities the document provides for entering other territories...but we simply don't know the whole story." Yaichiro seemed to have a negative view of the Nepleslians' conduct in this regard, as he texted an NNN link to everyone in the room noting the development.

"In regard to the technology of their ships, the Gartagens are understandably more guarded in their release of technology information, especially regarding their military. They utilize nuclear fusion power, and their ships are capable of faster than light propulsion, ostensibly via fold drives. Analysis of the images of the "Guardian"-class ships indicates a hull with an exterior ablative supplemental armor, forward mounted energy weapons of an unknown type, a mix of energy and solid point defense turrets, and missile launchers likely capable of launching devices with thermonuclear warheads. This last possibility is implied more by their history with nuclear weaponry than concrete evidence. While their ships may be of lower technology compared to our own, they should be assumed capable of causing damage if engaged in combat should discussions break down."

Sune considered the data provided, and found the situation troubling, and with that decision, his appetite waning. He placed his chopsticks down and waited for a moment to speak.

"I do not wish to dispute your conclusion Kage-Chusa. But it is unrealistic to belive these Gartagen are in a position to help Nepleslia defend the Nepleslian home world.

The Nepleslian Empire is in the western quadrant of the Kikyo Sector, and it would appear that Shara is beyond the Abwheran in the Eastern side. A new race of space faring beings, is not going to be a deterrent to the NMX. Most likely their own technology will be inferior to that of the major powers in the sector.

However, news of an alliance with the Neplesalians and of purchasing equipment has just raised the Gartagen to a very likely target for the NMX.

It will take time for these Gartagens to become proficient with alien technology, months at a minimum. Meanwhile, that News article just painted a large target on them. A planet of either new slaves or meat byproducts is what they will be seen as by the Mishhuvurthyar." Sune said, folding up his napkin and laying it beside his plate. He took a drink of water out of his glass.

"I do not say that the Gartagens will be effective at fighting the NMX. I had said that the Nepleslians seem to hope to use them as such according to the NNN. My description of the ships being able to cause damage was for if we went in alone against their forces if discussions failed -- not an analysis of how well they would fare in the role the Nepleslians have painted for them." Yaichiro clarified, since he seemed to have been misinterpreted.

Wardroom

Takeyu shook his head in disgust. "Yea, and I doubt they have the forces or the manpower to ward off an attacking NMX fleet," he placed his chopsticks back down, having finished with the rice and was now looking at the onion volcano.

"The Neps just made a mistake, and it could potentially cost an entire race their lives," he clasped his hands together and looked straight at the wall.

Reika frowned as she absorbed the commentary of the dining crewmembers, making a mental note that Kage-chusa already seemed to have studied the available information about the Gartagen in depth.

The operative spoke softly, still with a small frown as she continued to think about the mission ahead and how to accomplish their objectives, "In regards to the NNN broadcast, all we really know for certain is that the Nepleslians and in all likelihood, the Mishhuvurthyar, are now aware of the existence of the Gartagen. We do not know if talks for an alliance are really in progress or have been completed- though given the amount of elapsed time since first contact it is doubtful- or how the Nepleslians became aware of the Gartagens existence. The Gartegans have been given PANTHEON access even if only at a civilian level, which means they have essentially all the information they need to locate and initiate contact with any of the other known species. It may have been they who approached the Nepleslians for an alliance."

Reika sighed, "We can speculate all we want. We won't know the truth of the matter unless the Gartagen issue their own statement in regards to this supposed alliance, or until we investigate ourselves."

Ramiro listened to the others comments, making mental notes in his head. On some of the comments, he would flip through pages on his comm to check for accuracy and any new information. At one point he looked up from his comm and back around the table.

"Well one thing's for sure, that our civilian contact reached the Gartagens first. Records show that the NNN broadcast was exactly one week ago, however the messages from the civilian came two weeks and two days ago as well as three weeks ago. Also, the broadcast stated that a diplomatic envoy would be setting out towards Shara from the SMoDIN 4th Fleet, which means we should expect the Nepleslians to either already be there, or be showing up shortly after us. However, this does complicate things and increases the need for us to have our weapons ready at all times, and to make sure the Gartagens have sufficient knowledge of the NMX."

Ramiro glanced back at his comm, getting a quick thought and started flipping through more information.

"I would also like to point out the fact that Ether, an NMX controlled system, is just over 50 light years from Shara in a straight line. This could provide easy access to the Gartagens home world and increases the chance of NMX entanglement. On that note, time is precious and I feel that we should leave as soon as possible."

Takeyu listened to what Ramiro said, and checked with Charisma on the status of Ether.

Mmm... after Xylar in YE 21 we abandoned it in YE 32, then the NMX came late the same year... he rubbed his chin thoughtfully before glancing about the room. "Perhaps this has already been done, but wouldn't sending a scout ship or even a SAINT Operative to check on the status of Ether and see if the NMX are using it as a possible 'invasion point' be a good idea? Not to mention, wouldn't removing that potential threat show the Gartagens that they can trust the empire?" he asked, he knew his suggestion was probably pushing things a bit but it was a thought he had none the less. Of course, his suggestion that a SAINT be sent was only because of their access to stealthier craft.

While waiting for a response he cross checked his information, making certain he hadn't blundered up any details.

"It is also possible that the NMX would deploy forces from Xylar instead. The distance from Shara is almost the same." Reika added succinctly after Takeyu said his piece.

"To my knowledge there hasn't been any recent SAINT reconnaissance missions performed in either of those two systems, so there's no telling just how concentrated their forces are or what assets they have put in place. Because of the greater abundance of resources, Ether may have since been utilized for industrial pursuits and if so is likely to have defenses which the NMX could re-purpose to mount an expedition to the Shara system. However, Xylar is a planet dominated by water with little strategic value; the NMX may simply be occupying the system to deny it to anyone else, or its value to them may lie as a logistical supply depot and staging post for pushes into adjacent systems. In either case, they could simple choose to abandon Xylar in favor of occupying Gartaga- which would have greater value- or else they could have enough ships to spare in Xylar that they can afford to mount an attack from there."

Reika managed a wry grin, "That's of course assuming they aren't able to send ships from both systems at once. An unlikely worse-case scenario... but it's possible given what we know."

She turned her attention towards Hanako, softly adding her own opinion. "I agree that it might be a good idea to request SAINT recon missions be sent to each of those systems, or else request an update from SAINT about their most recent intelligence from both Ether and Xylar- just because I'm not aware of any recent reconnaissance performed in those systems doesn't mean they haven't occurred. However I recommend that we should continue onwards to Gartaga without waiting for their response either way; the time critical nature of this mission means we likely can't afford to. If the information from SAINT doesn't arrive quickly enough to do our immediate mission any good, knowing what's occurring in those systems could still be important or beneficial in the future. It's of course your call Ketsurui-taisa."
