YE 46.8

The YSS Resurgence's sleek shape rested in her old hangar in the Central Fleet Depot. After spending so much time in unknown space beyond the mysterious and war-torn Concordia Sector, discovering the ruins and stations of the Aetherian Progenitors, and fighting the relic raiding Xynar military, the ship had got to come home for the Holidays, getting to be in Kyoto for the great Candy Festival and soon it would be the Year-End Holiday.

It was a messy winter in the Kyoto area this year, and the snow was falling in great quantities, and the tarmac in front of the ship was constantly met with the site of robotic bulldozers and snowplows trying to keep the concrete reasonably clear, while a meter-tall blanket of snow had piled up on the Resurgence's prow like a hat because it stuck out of the hangar, which was freezing inside, and dark from all the roof windows being covered in thick snow.

In YE 47, the ship would be back out there again and already there were preparations happening. Short computer operated trains from Star Army Logistics would come by every so often to deliver containers of supplies from foods to missiles, for the ship's continued mission, and the crew would be experiencing some changes as well...though most of the regulars would be staying.

Yoshiro walked out of the Resurgence and decided to go off somewhere to work off his frustrations over the last mission.

Yoshiro saw Sakuko arriving. "Hello!" she waved at him. Last time he'd seen her, she'd been much more round, beautifully gravid with her child. But she looked back to normal now. "Zanvan's taking over on paternity leave so I'm back," she told Yoshiro.

"Well how are you now? Do you need anything from me?" Yoshiro said.

"No, but you need something from me," Sakuko said, giving Yoshiro a wink. "I've got a shipment of the new Type 47 Explorer Uniforms, one for everyone in the crew plus some spares for combat loss." She pointed to one of the trains behind her, which had a huge box on a pallet.

"Sakuko!" Yuri said happily as she saw her, and hurried towards her.

"That's great! Let me get someone to get them on the ship, You're a lifesaver." Yoshiro said "I will talk to you soon, Sakuko. Thank you for this."

"This woman forks," Sakuko said, pointing at her forklift nearby. "I've got this."

Sanda was dressed in her cold weather gear. She tilted her head up and blew her breath out like she was smoking a cigarette. She heard Sakuko meantion the shipment of new Explorer Uniforms. That sounded good. She debated sticking around so that she might try out those new suits.

Poppy Pink and a massive, muscular dude with pink hair and green eyes arrived in a LSTV just then. He looked like he barely fit in it. "Hey everyone!" She looked like she was in a great mood.

Yoshiro took a walk and was thinking about the last mission. He was disappointed the way it ended but he had to hope for the best. He didn't want to face people just yet. He hoped that he wasn't noticed as he felt disappointed in himself despite what the captain said to him

Sanda smiled as Poppy pulled up. "Ke-Lo-Ke Pink! Who have you got with you?"

Yuri widened her eyes as a man with pink hair and green eyes arrived with Poppy. "hello, Poppy-sempai, and hello possible new friend, sir!" She said eith a polite smile.

"This is my dad!" Poppy grinned proudly.

Sanda laughed. That was not what she expected, but she also wasn't at all surprised either.

Stepping off one of the logistic trains was a oddly rabbitoid individual. Squinting his eyes at the harsh winter sun, before making his way towards the hangar. "Okay. First day on the job. Better make a good first impression."

"Here we are, the YSS Resurgence," Beryl Leyton told the rabbit-man, gesturing towards the large gunship in the hangar. "You'll want to report to the captain and check in with the ship's doctor, Poppy Pink. I see her over there. She's the one with the pink hair." She hopped off the train and it automatically zoomed off once it had unloaded. She went to go greet Sakuko. "Welcome back!"

"Right." The rabbit-man responded. "I'll get right to that." He walked towards Poppy, since he had no idea where to find the captain at the moment, might as well start with talking to the doctor. Clearing his throat, he spoke up. "Santô Hei Aalto, reporting in." He made a salute, and waited for a response.

Yoshiro finally found a spot to just let out his emotional frustrations about the last mission while he was hitting a wall while screaming and feeling utterly helpless."how did I ever get here in my career? I can't even begin to understand what the Star Army ever saw in me." His knuckles were bloody and hurt so he decided to go see a medic but he wasn't paying attention and bumped into a flying Kokoro.

"oooh, daddy huh? nice to meet you, Doctor Pink, sir" Yuri said having heard of him from her studies. But she was still interested in making him a friend if he was.

Doctor Pink gave Yuri a nod. "I've recently been asked to join the Star Army due to the war," he explained. "I will be teaching at the Star Army Academy. Poppy said this would be a good chance for me to see her workplace. I admit I was always nervous about her serving on the front lines but she seems to be doing well out there; and, I have all of you, her crewmates, to thank for keeping good care of her," he told the group.

A blue haired nekovalkrja slowly strolled along the hangar, eyes focused on a holotablet in front of her, which had blueprints vaguely resembling a 'kalamari' Mindy attachment. Kokoro looked probably the most focused most of the resurgence crew had seen her, a metallic tablet stylus sticking out of her mouth as she treaded closer to the group. Unfortunately... she wasnt looking at where she was going.

"She takes even better care of us." Sanda told Dr. Pink, Senior. "I stopped trying to keep track of the number of times she's saved my life. Or has offered really good counsalling when I was a wreck." Sanda added, think back to last mission a few months ago.

"I've learned a lot from Poppy-sempai as well, I'm proud to be serving under her" Yuri commented. She felt pleased that she might be able to work under his dad too. Maybe he might have insight she could learn. Spotting a new crew member, had the little rascal distracted though. "ooh new friend!"

Poppy looked to the new face, and returned the salute. "Ah! Hey there! A new member of the crew, eh?" she asked, grinning. "I can show you around the ship in just a moment. I can take you to meet captain Aoba as well if needed."

Shosa Trowa Yamamoto saw the new crew member arrive. He had actually been waiting specifically for the recuite. "I'll get him settled in Poppy." Trowa said. "I believe young Aalto and I might be battle buddies during the next mission."

"Thanks!" Poppy replied. "See me soon for your initial checkup," she told Sulevi "Nice to meet you, Aalto-Hei."

Letting his shoulders relax, Aalto dropped his salute. "Uh, yes ma'am." He turned to the Shosa. "Well, I will be serving as a mecha pilot, are you as well?"

Trowa smiled. "I actually just got certified not to long ago. Started my carrier as Starship Operator. But last year during the Last Chance Salvage I scored a Mech Prototype. Been fiddling with it ever since. With the increasing dangers the Resurgence has been encountering, Captain Aoba thought it might be a good idea to have some heavy firepower. So I got certified, and you got assigned to us."

"Come on. Grab you're gear and we'll get out of this cold and get your stuff stored. I'm sure you have some questions." Trowa said as he let the way towards the boarding ramp.

Slinging his duffel bag over his shoulder, he followed after Trowa. "Prototype you said? Must be an interesting machine to work with."

Trowa smiled. "Oh it is. It's fast, very fast. I'm starting to think that it was some samurai prototype or something because it's only weapon, or rather the only weapon that came with it is a sword. Me and Norita, the ship's armorer have been working on getting it some proper range weapons. What about you? What is your Mech of choice?"

Aalto paused for a moment, rubbing his chin. "Depends. There's the mech I trained on, and there's the mech I used before I enlisted. But that thing was a glorified forklift, for all intents and purposes."

"I should have said style of fighting." Trowa clairfied. "You a big gun man or do you like to get up close?"

Yoshiro finally found a spot to just let out his emotional frustrations about the last mission while he was hitting a wall while screaming and feeling utterly helpless."how did I ever get here in my career? I can't even begin to understand what the Star Army ever saw in me." His knuckles were bloody and hurt so he decided to go see a medic but he wasn't paying attention and bumped into Kokoro.

"ACK-" Kokoro screeched as the bump sent her backwards on her ass, sitting on her tail- which- ow. Her holotab clattered onto the ground. "OW-"

Yoshiro helped Kokoro up. "I'm so sorry for that. I really need to pay attention to where I am going." Yoshiro said grasping his bloody knuckles as he apologized to Kokoro. "I am just having a bit of a bad day but that doesn't mean I don't have to pay attention to my surroundings."

"Owww.. its fine! I wasnt paying attention eithe- Eh-" Kokoro raised an eyebrow after Yoshiro helped her up, noticing blood on her hand- having originated from Yoshiro. "Wait wha- are you alright?"

Poppy looked at Yuri and gestured with her eyes for Yuri to go over and help Yoshiro with first aid for his hands.

Yoshiro nodded"I am okay but my knuckles are not." Yoshiro said. "I needed to take out my frustrations about my last mission and the aftermath. I guess the wall had something to say about that."

Yuri zoomed away from Poppy immediately, her hands on her first aid kit. "dont move! i got you" she said to Yoshiro and Kokoro. She immediately began cleaning the wound Yoshiro had, then once it was cleaned and disinfected, she began to bandage it.

"Get a load of that snow," Cassie exclaimed, shivering. She shook hands with Poppy's dad as Poppy introduced her.

"Cassie and I used to be roommates," Poppy told Pendragon. "But I got my own cabin after I became an officer," she explained.

"You were so eager to get out there you didn't even wait to finish your diploma," Pendragon said with a laugh. "I'm glad you finished it. So this ship is home away from home, eh?"

"Let me show you around inside," Poppy said. She joined the others in heading towards the ramp up into the ship's cargo bay, careful to stay out of the way of Beryl and Sakuko's cargo forklifts.

The interior of the ship was a little beat up from previous fires and explosions that had happened in previous missions, but it was clean and well-maintained. As the crew headed into the bay they could feel the warmth of the ship's internal heaters and, besides the cargo bay's chilly interior, the rest of the ship was warm and comfortable. Poppy began giving her dad the tour, and Cassie followed along.

"Thanks for your help, Yuri." Yoshiro said. "You're a great medic." He said it with sincerity. In the back of his mind, those nagging doubts started to burn at the edges of his psyche. He began to doubting
the moves that he made and what he did. He wasn't sure what to say or do and he hoped no one noticed what he was feeling.

Yuri smiled at him 'happy to help, and i'm not yet a great Medic, just a trainee, Poppy-sempai is better' she said humbly though she is a Nitto Hei ranked member of Star Army.

Suddenly captain Aoba's voice sounded on the intercom. "This is the captain speaking, we have a situation. Prepare for liftoff in five minutes. I will brief you in the ship's wardroom."

"Ain't no rest for the wicked. " Yoshiro said and headed to the wardroom.

"yup" Yuri said "mom's already on board, i arrived later cause i wanted to snuggle and play with Miscrea, my Racoon.

Trowa heard the anouncement and signed. "Looks like dinner with my family is going to have to wait." He said to Aalto.

The annoucement shook Aalto out of his moment of musing. "Sorry, I don't know yet."

Trowa just smiled. "Just stick with me young Santo-hei. You'll get the lay of things soon enough."

"WH- 5 MINUTES???" Kokoro screeched, and took off from next to Yoshiro and Yuri, hovering straight for the Resurgence.

Already the ship began to whine and buzz from the sound of aether plasma and spacefold systems powering on. The supply specialists scrambled to park their vehicles and loaded up onto the Resurgence. After everyone coming was aboard, they closed the big cargo ramp.

WARDROOM

The crew began to crowd into the wardroom to see what the surprise mission was.

Kawa Euikoshi, the ship's green-haired science officer, pulled up a volumetric display. She was wearing a lab coat over her uniform. "Good morning everyone," she greeted her crewmates. "At

Always one to enjoy when the resident science officer spoke or gave briefings, Mineko's eyes lit up as they settled onto Kawa Euikoshi.

Chiheisen slipped into the wardroom in her duty uniform- The Elysian's hair was undone, and it was an absolute mess. Seem's like the birb had been sleeping before the sudden mission announcement.

Sanda entered the Wardroom but stood over by the wall, watching everyone as they came in. Trowa stopped by her as he entered and the two spoke quietly a moment before Trowa went over to sit by Aalto.

Yayoi turned as she spotted Sanda entered the wardroom, and nods to her. She also saw Yuri enter, looking cheerful as usual.

Aalto craned his neck up, to better look at the display. The constant frown on his face deepening slightly. "Pick a small one they said." He thought to himself, silently cursing his small stature. "You'll fit better in the cockpit, they said."

"At 0934 this morning a group of ships from another universe was detected entering the Kikyo Sector, and the Star Army has begun to mobilize. We were able to quickly get in contact with them and confirm they are Norian ships from their universe. The details aren't really known to us at this time but these ships are full of refugees and some of them have failing systems from the transit and are in danger of falling apart. Indeed, some of them did not survive the jump."

"Great, so we have to deal with an isekai protagonist? Man hovertruck-kun is really working overtime isn't it?" Yoshiro said

Sanda's lips tighted a little bit as she remebered the last time they went to help the Norians... And the huge dosage of Aether radiation poisoning she received on that mission.

Aoba stepped up next to Euikoshi, "Thank you, Kawa-Chui. Our orders from Mistress Taisho Ketsurui Yui are to go to the Akina system immediately and to render any assistance we can to the refugee ships. That means tech teams to stabilize their ships, medical teams to help their people, away teams to provide crowd control and security, and so forth. Also there is some sort of civil war happening so we can't assume all ships or personnel are friendly. Some of the ships may have divided loyalties and may be experiencing infighting that we don't want to get caught in the middle of."

Yayoi raised her hand and waited untill called upon to ask her question. "Considering the Akina system is home to the Norians of Tsenlan peoples could thhis be similar, and do we have any word on other groups assisting?'

Sanda raised a hand from the back. "Sir? Are we expecting the same scale and conditions as the last time Norians refuges showed up?"

"No," Aoba said, "However, this is a very new situation so we are still gathering information on what the situation is. That's part of what we'll be doing there...figuring it out."

Chiheisen stood next to the Ranger pair as she listened in, raising an eyebrow.

"To piggyback on Sanda's question, there was plenty of unforeseen intervention from their universe that seeped into ours during that last time we helped them. Is there probably cause to expect further complications, as we experienced last time?" Mineko asked, thinking back to the otherworldly space-faring monster that had popped into the Kagame Galaxy unexpectedly,.

"Unknown," Aoba replied, "But the ship will maintain combat readiness as a precaution. That is all for now. To your combat stations, Resurgence crew."

"For rescue missions, the explorer suits should work fine. I have the new ones ready for you in the cargo bay," Sakuko told everyone.

"Then lets go gear up." Sanda said as she left the room.

"Right behind you," Mineko said, brows furrowed as she looked to Sanda's back and followed suit. The Neko used the ranger as a sort of guide to steer her way to the power armor bay as she looked into all she could in her digital brain. There were intercepted news reports to do with this already posted on rebellious Norian media groups that SAINT had already intercepted.

Yayoi nodded and followed Sanda, as she prepared for the mission. She had to admit, she liked rescue missions, helping others vs shooting enemies. Of course, there are enemies she..enjoys killing.

"Nah, I took a hit straight to the chest in an Explorer last time. I never don't want a full plate in front of me again." Hayden sympathetically rubbed his chest in memory of the now-gone pain. He shuffled out in a paradoxical slow hustle behind the others.

Sanda looked over her shoulder at Mineko. "The spooks joining us for this one?" Sanda teased her roommate.

"Only if you'll have me. Erika's got higher steaks to eat, or however that saying goes. They say if you can't have an operative, settle for an analsyt." Mineko quipped back, happy to see Sanda's smile once more.

"Captain?" Trowa said as the meeting broke up. "Before we get underway, let me introduce our new crew member. Santo hei Aalto."

Once more stiffening up, Aalto turned to the Captain to salute.

Captain Aoba returned the salute. "Welcome to the Resurgence," he said. Captain Aoba was a kind of "samurai-esque" man with shrewd, calculating eyes and a man who rarely used more words than he had to. He looked on the younger side for a man of his rank. "I expect you, and everyone, to do your best to make this the greatest ship in the Star Army, and be the place you will proudly remember for the rest of your life. Resurgence is great because of its great crew, so get to know them," he told Aalto.

"Uh, Yessir... Thank you, sir."

Yoshiro was just listening to the briefing silently, doubt nagging at his mind but he decided to focus on the mission at hand and went to grab an Explorer suit and his weapons ready.

Yayoi got suited up in the explorer suit, while Yuri hurried to the Medical Bay.

The ship shifted slightly under their feet as it lifted off the ground, exited the hangar, and raced up towards the stars, rattling a little and then getting smooth as they entered open space. In a moment the ship began to shimmer in bright teal sparkles as it entered hyperspace.
