Firebird

Sune's reply was short and succinct, "Eucharis this is Jalen-Chusa,
Orders received and acknowledged."

He stood in his Type 35 uniform waiting for the Firebird to dock with the Eucharis. The uniform felt strange, he was so used to wearing his typical Type 30 Duty Uniform. But it seemed appropriate that upon his return to the Eucharis to be wearing the new uniform, his life had changed since his departure in unexpected ways.

He felt the Firebird secure itself to the Eucharis docking port. Once the seal indicators were green, Sune cycled the hatch open.

Before him stood Cherry, "Welcome Jalen-Chusa." as she bowed.

Eucharis
"Permission to come aboard Cherry-NitΓ΄ Heisho." he asked returning her bow, it also feeling strange to ask for permission to come aboard his former home.

"Permission granted Chusa." Cherry said gesturing for him to come in. "I must say I am surprised to see you so soon."

"Yes, I know I did not expect to see the Eucharis so soon either, I will just say the situation was complicated. Please take me to the ShΓ΄shΓ΄." he asked.

Even though Sune knew the way to the bridge, he kept pace with Cherry, he was silent and his expression was pensive. He would really have preferred to have this meeting on the Firebird, but Hanako was the senior and it was her right to have him meet her here. He tried to figure out how best to deal with the circumstances.

Cherry opened the door to the bridge, Sune stepped to the door, made a quick minor adjustment to his appearance and entered. He walked smartly over to Hanako, came to attention, and bowed. "Jalen Sune-Chusa, reporting as ordered Ketsurui-ShΓ΄shΓ΄"

YSS Eucharis Bridge

Hanako returned Sune's bow. "Come with me," she said, leading Sune towards her suite where they could discuss matters privately.

"You have the bridge, Ramiro," Hanako said, grabbing her jacket and AMES suit.

Soon they were alone in Hanako's small cabin. Hanako sat on the bed. "I want to know," she began, "why you aborted your mission in violation of my orders. I sent you to assist Kotori and serve as her first officer. Why have you returned?"

Sune followed Hanako to her room, he took a second when he entered to see her private chambers.

He stood at attention while Hanako started the discussion. He carefully chose his words in response.

"The matter is complicated to say the least. Though technically I did not return, you ordered me here Ketsurui-ShΓ΄shΓ΄.

I left the Eucharis fully expecting to fulfill the orders as given to me. However, from the moment of my arrival on Yamatai, things started going awry. First we received a vague set of orders to report to Kyoto Military Spaceport and stand by for further instructions.

I expected as with when I joined the Eucharis that I would report to Ketsurui Kotori-Taisa. But that never happened. There were no accommodations made for us so we had to acquire hotel rooms and wait for two days. Our next set of instructions was to Present yourself to the SAINT Command Center, War Room 3, 1400 hours, to be briefed on your next assignment.

After an inordinate amount of bureaucratic process we were allowed to enter the designated room. I presumed at first that the processing was some sort of security check, but then I recalled that there was no such process when I joined the Eucharis."

Sune paused at this point to collect his thoughts, he carefully replayed the initial part of the briefing in his mind and then resumed..

"A number of individuals entered the room, a number of them sporting black panels and others various division colors. An Archangel entered, whom later identified herself as 'Celeste'.

At this point I started becoming concerned, this was definitely not what I was expecting. Then she started the briefing by saying.

'My present posting is the administration of the resources devoted to surveillance and intervention in regard to Princess Ketsurui Kotori. I am to be your SAINT handler and superior officer in the cadre of your coming assignment.'

I could not understand why SAINT was involved, but then she continued and said.

'You are here because Ketsurui Kotori has chosen to commandeer a vessel of her own, but requested Star Army Personnel Management to provide her a crew. We have intervened and filtered the request so that SAPM could submit the most competent and loyal people available for our operation.'

'Your assignment is to board the YSS Byakuren, posing as subordinates to the princess. During normal operations of the vessel, you are to monitor Ketsurui Kotori to gather information on her... but also more pointedly report any criminal or disloyal actions on her part. Should any be perceived, you may be called upon to eliminate her.' "

Sune paused to let the import of those words sink in.

Bridge

Ramiro went about moving the ship as necessary, overseeing the docking procedure, and all of the stuff that normally went along with his job. He was excited to see Sune, to say the least, which is why he immediately spun his chair around when the Bridge door opened. With a grin on his face he was about to greet his old friend, but this was quickly thrown away when Hanako ordered Sune out of the room.

Ramiro sported a clearly upset look on his face, however this look slowly changed to a look of bewilderment, and then to a look of shock and awe.

"Hanako-Shosho left the Bridge to me!" He puased as he slowly looked over at Natsumi. "She's NEVER left the bridge to me. She would always leave Sune in charge of the bridge when she left." Ramiro began to grin again as he realized that things wouldn't be all bad with his old friend gone, because now somebody would need to fill his role as the Shosho's right-hand when it came to running the bridge.

Bridge

Natsumi looked up from her station as Sune appeared in the hatchway. She had not known him very long, but was happy to see the familiar face of the former Exec once more. He was quickly hurried off the bridge by Hanako before any pleasantries could be exchanged by the crew and Ramiro put in charge of the command center.

"Hanako-Shosho left the Bridge to me!" He puased as he slowly looked over at Natsumi. "She's NEVER left the bridge to me. She would always leave Sune in charge of the bridge when she left."

Natsumi grinned, seeing the look of bewildered joy crossing the senior Operators face. "Congrats!" she said, giving him a broad smile.

ON: YSS Eucharis - Captain's Suite

"I see," Hanako said, a pensive expression on her face. "As the person that adopted her in the Ketsurui Clan, I feel involved. There is a question of her loyalty and she is a potential threat to the government. From the records of the Miharu, she indirectly killed an older version of Taisho Yui and thinks she absorbed that Yui's memories somehow. So she could be considered a traitor based on that. At the same time, she helped turn the war around. There is also the factor of the returning nekos being brainwashed to be loyal to Kotori. Kotori has a lot of power and is a dangerous unknown factor. So I can understand the extreme caution on the part of the government."

Sune listened to Hanko's explanation, "Caution? I do not call this caution. But from your comments I can see that Celeste was obviously telling the truth that Ketsurui Yui sanctioned this.

Well, I challenged Celeste on the legitimacy of the order. Because you do not convict or in this case kill someone for a perception. However, I still had thoughts that I could fulfill the orders you gave me to assist her. I also realized that the mission was rendered almost impossible, because Celeste's comments biased the majority of the crew from the onset.

If you want a fair investigation, you do not bias the team. My concerns about the quality of the crew were proven a few minutes later. When Konoka and I left the conference room. A member of the crew came out with us, though she was wearing a colored panel, I suspect that she was SAINT. But she had the temerity to accuss me of treason for saying that of all the people that had been in the conference room. The only two I trusted fully were Konoka and Reika, because I knew who and what they were."

"She claimed she has the ability to kill the Empress or Yui and she is disgruntled because she disagreed with Taisho Yui's Battle of Yamatai tactics. Yui is concerend she might be a rebel. I sent you because while the others are scrutinizing her, I needed a positive figure to guide her in the right direction and bring her back into the fold," the Shosho explained.

"Well, there was another complication. Even after Celeste's veiled threat, and the obvious bias of the crew I was willing to continue, Because you asked me to help her. My analysis of the situation gave me a very slim chance, but by being the XO, I would have the contact necessary to allow me to try and foster a working relationship and to get insight into her. But then Celeste saw fit to bring another officer who outranked me. At that point the mission from my perspective became untenable.

Technically that other officer would have been her XO. That would cut me off from the level of contact and access I would need. If I was made the XO, I would be back in a situation like there was here on the Eucharis. When you made me XO and Klein-Chusa was on board. Having a higher ranking officer under me introduced too many negative variables. The only option at that point I could take was to decline the mission. "

Hanako placed her hands on her hips and looked up at Sune. "That was your opinion. We should be dealing in facts here. Here are some facts: You did not know if you would be XO or not. You did not contact Kotori as I ordered. You chose to abort the mission without permission. It was only after the fact that you asked me for a command of your own."

"My decision was based on the facts as I knew them. Kotori's location was unknown even to SAINT. That was one of their concerns. I left my position here as an XO, since you said she was going to build a ship, it was logical to assume that my position would be laterial. I am a soldier Shosho, I am not a SAINT operative, I do not deal in intrigue and deception. That nature, since you never voiced your concerns, to me was contrary to the very orders you gave me."

"I did not send you there to decieve anyone, I sent you there to help Kotori! You gave up before thinigs even began, and now she is surrounded by those who are waiting for her to slip up. What am I to do now, with my adopted sister thrown to the wolves?"

"No, Tachihara-Heisho is still there, and in charge of the SAINT contingent. She will ensure that she does what her training will allow her to do properly. As you said you did not send me to deceive anyone, but SAINT is calling the shots on the mission, and that is what they wanted. I can not say that I will obey Celeste and agree to kill a fellow soldier based on supposition or innuendo. Perhaps if I had more information that was with held from me, my analysis would have been different. But I made the best choice I could. I am sorry that it disappointed you, but given the same circumstances, my decision would be the same. The best chance I saw for Kotori was to take myself out of the equation.

As for your comment your first message about my being worried about my career that was the farthest thing from my mind. I had no inkling that you and Yui-Taisho would actually condone this kind of thing. My rationale for asking for the Firebird, was to try and protect you. Because wrongly now, but at the time, I was certain that the Taisho would not sanction an assassination of a member of the Clan, and that if you found out, that you would try to take actions to protect Kotori, and I believe that Celeste would have taken steps to prevent that.

The Firebird was not a promotion in anything but name, I asked for command of a lowly Scout ship so I could do that one thing I have been trained to do, and do well. Which is to be Soldier. I am not a spy, I am not an assassin. Bottom line, I was the wrong person for the job."

"Yui will eliminate any threat to her or the Empire. My comment on your career was based on the fact that you said that being something other than first officer would be beneath you and a negative career move. That said to me you were thinking of yourself over the mission. Combined with bringing a ship into service, that reinforced the appearance that you were gunning for a command position. Protocol is that you contact me for a transfer out of here, instead of deserting your post on your own accord," Hanako told Sune.

"I considered sending you a message, ruled it out, because I am certain that if I tried to contact you saying I had concerns about this mission, That no such message would get through. So yes, I sent a message the only way I could figure that could not be blocked. And yes, I said those words, which were never in my message to you. But said to Celeste's people. I had thought that my former Commander would know me well enough to better.

As for deserting my post. Technically that is incorrect. Because there is no Byakuren at this time it still in construction, and at the time I put in my request, there was no official roster. So I had no post."

"It is not about the roster, it is about your orders," Hanako pointed out. Suddenly Hanako rose from the bed and shoved Sune's chest with both hands. "You hurt my feelings," she said in a quiet voice with her glossy gold eyes locked on his. "Now what do we do?!"

"It was never my intention to hurt you in any manner. I only accepted the mission, because it was important to you. I left my home and all the people I cared about. I never expected to come back to the Eucharis... I do not know. My plans have gone awry since the very situation I wanted to avoid, turned out to be unnecessary.

To be honest, these past days have been disturbing to me. I have learned things that go contrary to my core beliefs. I believe in the Empire, our laws and the Star Army. I have to believe that the principles I have learned and sworn to follow have to be true. So unless you chose to send me to prison or discharge me, the Firebird and myself stand ready to serve the Empire to defend it against all enemies."

"Alright," Hanako nodded, stepping backwards out of his personal space. "You are dismissed."

Sune bowed to Hanako, "ShΓ΄shΓ΄." he then turned and walked out of Hanako's cabin. Once clear of the door his paced slowed for a few steps as he wanted to ensure that his emotions were under control before entering the bridge. The discussion with Hanako was almost as painful as when he learned of Raia's death. He was fairly certain that his friendship with Hanako was in ruins. He entered the bridge and looked at Ramiro. "You look good at your station Valencia-Juni. Take care of the Eucharis." He walked to the door, "Cherry-Heisho, kindly escort me back to the Firebird."

Bridge

Ramiro grinned when he heard Sune enter the bridge again. "Thank you Chusa." He spun his chair around to face Sune before continuing. "It's been a while since we've hung out, we should go for drinks next time we both have leave together."

Bridge

Sune looked at Ramiro, he gave a wry smile that did not reach his eyes, "That sound like a good idea. When the opportunity arises, I will buy the first round. Right now I need to return to the Firebird. Take care Ramiro-San."

With that he exited the bridge, leaving Cherry to follow in his wake. A few minutes later the Firebird disconnected from the Eucharis and moved off to a position astern of her.

Eucharis Bridge

Hanako returned, letting out a deep, painful sigh as she moved through the door. Having to confront Sune had been painful. I could really use a glass of wine right now, she thought to herself.

She looked over at Ramiro and Natsumi curiously before walking over to the Mission Operations station and looking at data from the armor team. "This says Bors does not have any heart or lungs right now and is barely alive," Hanako said, reading the damage displays. "can one of you take the remaining shuttle down there with Blueberry, medical supplies, and replacement power armor?"

Bridge

"I will go, Shosho" Natsumi said, getting up from where she was seated at the Starship Operators station. She glanced over at Ramiro, "I think you need your chair back anyways" she said and smiled to her fellow Operator.

Turning back to Hanako, she bowed respectfully, then departed from the bridge, bound for the power armor bay. On the way she called up Blueberry and asked her to bring medical supplies to the shuttle.

Next the contacted Victory and Pineapple, enlisting their help to move several suits of spare power armor as well as her own suit down to the shuttlebay, where it was loaded onto the last remaining shuttlecraft.

Natsumi quickly settled herself into the pilots seat once the armor and supplies were loaded, her fingers flying across the controls as she powered the small craft up and prepped it for takeoff. It wasnt long before Blueberry arrived with medical kits, she had been apprised of Bors condition and had packed accordingly.

A final glance over her status boards once the shuttles hatch was sealed up told Natsumi all systems were ready and she keyed up the comm system. "Shuttle to Bridge, all supplies are loaded and myself and Blueberry Chui are aboard and ready to depart"

Bridge

At the mention of heading planet-side, Ramiro paused to see if Natsumi would volunteer. It hadn't occurred to him the her going would get him his seat back, so when she mentioned it his head spun in her direction. Watching her get up from the seat Ramiro leaped across the bridge with a loud "Woohoo!" before plopping into the seat. He then took a moment to get situated in the ass-grove that he had been working since the seats had to replaced after the emergency water landing.

Pulling up the usual interfaces, Ramiro slouched down in his seat, simply watching the readings. Upon receiving the comm message from Natsumi Ramiro spun the chair around to inform Hanako.

"Ma'am, the shuttle..." Ramiro trailed off as he noticed Hanako's expressions for the first time since she had returned to the bridge. He had been so excited about his seat that he hadn't being paying much attention.

"Yamashiro, you're clear to launch," Ramiro sent telepathically.

"Hanako, are you alright?" He hadn't called her by her given name in a long time, not since he had begun to gain a better understanding of what it meant to be Ketsurui. It has always been just by rank or "ma'am" or sometimes "Ketsurui-sama" or "Princess" when he was feeling exceptional admiration. But he knew this time was different, and based on how Sune had acted, he didn't need to be a genius to know that something must have gone wrong between the two.

Eucharis, Shuttle

"Yamashiro, you're clear to launch," was the response Natsumi recieved from Ramiro telepathically.

"Understood, shuttle departing." she replied the same way.

Natsuimi's fingers danced over her panel, inputting commands to the shuttle's computer system.

"Shuttle two ready to depart, request opening of the main bay doors" she said, keying the flight control channel.

As soon as she had a positive response and the doors began to retract, Natsumi lifted the shuttle off the deck and nudged the small craft forward with thrusters. Once clear of the Eucharis she kicked in the main sublight drive and angled into her preset course to take the shuttle down into the planets atmosphere, then to locate and link up with the Armor team on the surface.

Bridge

"I am alright," Hanako said, although she didn't sound very happy. Then the message from the Firebird came.

To: YSS Firebird
From: Shosho Hanako

Thank you for the invitation. At this time, I must decline your offer, due to our ongoing mission. After it is completed, I need to be with the crew to do the debriefing.

Bridge

Ramiro looked at Hanako skeptically.

"You're lying to me. I'll drop it for now, but you know I'm here if you need me."

He gave a look of sympathy before turning back to his station and concentrating on monitoring the ship and the away team.

Bridge

Hanako sat silently for a long while in her chair at the center of the bridge, thinking. The away team seemed to be taking longer than she'd expected.

She looked up to Ramiro. "Ramiro, would you like to bring the ship over the NMX base facility and see if we can find any NMX defenses left to destroy? We would not want our shuttles getting shot down on the way out." Even if the Eucharis didn't find anything, it was something to do and it put them close to the team in case the team needed additional assistance. "Also, do you think I should take my Mindy down there?"

Bridge

Ramiro began bringing the ship about to position if above the NMX facility. As the ship moved, he slouched back in his seat and brought his hand to his chin, clearly in though. After a few seconds of staring off into space he shook his head a bit.

"Negative Shosho. That's what you have myself for, you're the officer, you should stay here where you can maintain order and control. If you were to be killed, or Empress forbid kidnapped again, then it would cause a breakdown in orders and we would have no figurehead to lead us. I know you hate sitting by and watching without being able to help, but that's where your soldiers need you."

Bridge

"Figurehead?" Hanako repeated. "Are you implying that I am simply here for decoration? It is not inspire confidence to ask a crew member to do something I am not willing to do myself. I have fought alongside the crew before and am willing to do so again if needed."

Down below, there were either no defenses or at least none that dared bring the Eucharis' guns to bring retaliation on them.

Hanako looked over the Gartagen fleet numbers and the scans of the planet. "The NMX are all but removed from this planet. I wonder what will become of it. With our Star Army base here, we could perhaps make it our northernmost colony, circumventing the IAA because we were given the world, by the Gartagens, that we've already colonized, rather than colonizing it in violation of the treaty. The old NDI military bases on it would be suitable for bases too. It is not a place that many soldiers would want to be stationed at, but it could be important to the national defense," Hanako mused aloud. As she started thinking about politics, she looked at the Senate feed. "We have made quite a mess figuring out the Nekovalkyrja role in society."

Eucharis - Bridge

There was a slight frown from Helen, she had been quiet for most of her time on the bridge since leaving behind that fiasco which involved the Lorath, mainly since she was in the process of conducting an analysis of the data which they were able to skim together during their tour through the Matriarchy held systems. Though, she did look up from her volumetric display to put in her two cents.

"Shosho, if I may be so bold, if I am to understand the nekovalkryja role in society; it is to be the protectors to those who were born or manufactured weaker. Nekovalkryja bodies are weapons, just the same as the NSPs we wear, or the array on the front of this ship. Currently, I see myself as a Nepleslian using one of the most sophisticated weapon systems ever devised. I've always expected to have to return it when I'm done with it. Only thing that truly belongs to me at this time consists of the data assigned into the stored memory folder within my OS, which will accompany me beyond this body and will serve as what makes me who I am supposed to be... well... at least who I think I should be?" There was a troubled frown on Helen's lips toward the end of her statement. "What matters is that the flesh is just a tool, the person is the data within the flesh."

"As for settlements." Helen eyed the starmap of the area, with an overlay of the IAA arrangements, along with known travel routes and sovereign nation settlements. "I would not recommend a settlement be established here at this time. Considering the bulk of our fleet is poised to protect the southern portion of our Empire, it would be difficult to guarantee the safety of this location, not to mention, it is unfavorable to hemosynthetic compounds due to the low temperature, and the actual value of this site is minimal. I would recommend leaving it for the Gartagens, to perhaps provide them a feeling of accomplishment, a successful first thrust into life outside of their Union, it could certainly make them far more amicable as well."

Bridge

Ramiro sighed, spinning his chair to face Hanako.

"Ma'am, you insult me. I thought we knew each other better. You know that I meant no disobedience or disrespect. You asked for my honest opinion and I gave it, as well as my reasoning. While my choice of words may not have been exemplary, I know that you understood what I meant. You have a purpose aboard this vessel, the most important of all, and that is to give us the best orders that you can so that we can carry out your mission. If something were to happen to you then none of us are qualified to make the same calls that you have to. If you want someone to go down then I ask that you send myself, as your senior NCO aboard the Eucharis."

Ramiro spun back to face his station and continue flying the ship. But paused and looked back over his shoulder towards Hanako.

"I was only trying to help you, and to look out for your well being Hanako-Denka, the same as I've always done."
