Leaving the Medical Bay, Masako went straight to the Armor Bay and had arrived just in time to hear Tsuya respond. Blinking with a hint of confusion, the young Warrant Officer glanced around to see who was there. Nimura and Asher seemed to be in their suits already while Tsuya, Kyou, and Mara seemed to be standing around. Six individuals over all. The Warrant Officer kept herself from frowning. That would definitely be a small force to use, but it could be done.

"Unless I'm mistaken, everyone is here, correct?" she spoke up to the wing and waltzed into the Bay as confidently as she could feel.

Mara had just pounced into the armor bay when Masako came by. "Hai hai." She answered the Juni. "Though actually, we could also have the shuttle pilot join in... but if Sanri does so, that means abandoning the shuttle."

"Sigurd could guard the shuttle," Hinoto smoothly replied as she walked in.

Mara scrunched her nose in distaste, but didn't reply.

Hinoto came to Masako and nodded respectfully. "Kurohoshi-Juni, Claymere-Taii sent me to give your Black Knights equipment recommendations based on my analysis of the opposition you will face. May I address your subordinates?"

Tsuya's face went through some interesting contortions as she tried to keep from smiling as Masako walked in - and now she at least had something to look at instead of Asher, so she dropped her hands from her face and practically bored into the warrant officer with her stare. She was about to respond to the question, but Hinoto appeared and she thought better of it, simply watching the two of them.

Masako scratched her left ear in thought before shaking her head. "No, one extra body wouldn't make that much of a difference, especially since it's easier to divide us into teams of three this way." she replied. "But bringing Sigurd would be good anyway. Mainly because I wouldn't want to leave Sanri-san alone while we executed our mission." the small Warrant Officer explained before turning to Hinoto.

"Please, I think some deeper insight into what we need would be crucial," she told the young sprite and stepped aside to give Hinoto the floor.

The end of the half-hour came as a welcome relief. After giving a nod to Sanjuro, Miyoko took her position in the ST device.

As Miyoko lay prone in the ST device, Sanjuro set about gathering the extensive amount of information. The medical officer glanced intently over to her position while the machine began to run, stretching his shoulders idly now that he had found a moment of peace. Despite his calm outward appearance, Sanjuro was still inwardly smoldering in contempt. Her very presence mustered the memories of the several others like her Sanjuro had come across, and a small part of his subconscious pulled him towards cutting her transfer disastrously short and essentially ruining any chance of her returning should the worst befall her. Of course, his professionalism far outweighed this criminal urge and he kept his hands safely away from the delicate controls. As he continued to watch her progress through the procedure he knew he would have to say something to her, despite Masako's reprimand and warning. The Warrant Officer was no longer present, and Sanjuro was far too stressed from the multitude of touchy circumstances not to accept this readily-available vent for his frustration.

When Miyoko's transfer had finished, Sanjuro calmly removed the device from her head and helped her back to her feet. "Alright. You are free to go to the bridge," Sanjuro started, allowing her to get situated before giving the neko a harsh, intent glare straight into her eye.

"But let me make one thing perfectly clear, Saito-Heisho," the doctor began, his voice taking a tone to match the seriousness of his expression. There were no jokes or courtesies to be had now. "Kurohoshi-Juni may wish it differently, but I do not respect you, not in the slightest. I think you are listless, without passion, unmotivated and lazy...and I believe you are a liability, a detriment, and perhaps even a danger to this crew."

Hinoto joined her hands in front of her, dipped into a respectful bow to the other infantry pilots and began speaking.

"This analysis projects that you will face different opponents during your excursion," she gestured to a volumetric display which promptly appeared to her right, giving out a list.

"The nekomachina will be the most common opponent you will encounter," Hinoto continued. "Their robotic composition affords them the strength of a power armor, but not the resilience. You will find them capable of hefting anti-armor weaponry and wearing bodyarmor as any nekovalkyrja could. You may see some quipped with zesuaium shields as well."

"If your Daisy confronts one, you should find yourselves well equipped to the task. Your forearm cannons should provide enough firepower to cut them down in a few pulses individually, but if you find yourself fighting many, or fighting one with a shield... remember that the forearm cannons also have a heavy setting that will on impact have a blast radius similar to a grenade explosion - you can use this to strike many at a time, or to indirectly harm a shield-wielding nekomachina."

"If stuck in close quarter, your Daisy and it are evenly matched except that your armor is better. However, you do not want them that close - nekomachina are clever enough to go for your helmet and try to expose your more vulnerable head. If you are stuck in melee, remember that your Daisy has reinforced gauntlets and kneepads such such an occasion and that you can always use your shield as an improvised club to knock one away or even smash it with a well executed blow."

"Nekomachina are more easily destroyed with a railgun fire, a mini-missile and plasma discharges... but be wary of depleting your resources - it is likely that once you are in the gate, there will be no relief supplies available to you save what you can salvage from the enemy."

Hinoto gestured to the next item on the list.

"We have not encountered many of Eve's psionics, but we expect that if we will see them in larger numbers, it will be at the gate. The bright news is, most you will encounter will not be in power armor. Another bright point is that your Daisy armor has a Psionic Signal Controller which will provide your with a resistance that will significantly slow any direct attack sent your way."

"However, each is potentially deadly. If a psionic decides to assail you directly, they are powerful enough to - given the time - whittle down your PSC defense. You will get a warning when this happens. Beware: psionics can team up together to have your PSC defenses be compromised faster. Our estimate is that your PSC should give you 45 to 60 seconds of reliable endurance from a sustained effort - the moment their concentration is broken, they have to start over. However, the more psionics combining their strength, the faster they will cumulatively get through."

"If they get through, we're uncertain of the severity of the direct attacks, but these people are very good at what they do. It could range from you being stunned, dazed, suffering from illusions which can do anything from severely hindering your precision and efficiency to making you believe a friend is a foe... to finally the worst case scenario: completely dominating you and turning you into their obedient puppet."

"Not all will bother with a direct attack, and will instead attempt to attack you indirectly. Pyrokinesis used to create point-blank explosions on you and telekinesis to throw objects are some examples. We also know that when confronted, some may have the ability to bend space, allowing them to deflect incoming ranged attacks."

"Psionics may have varied powers, but regardless your best chance against them lies in breaking their concentration, or at least taxing it. Once a psionic has had her concentration broken, she will be significantly less able to counter you. If those you encounter was the space-bending types, area attacks that will test their ability to deflect or shield against them are your best assets, the less precise, the better."

"This may include explosive ordonnance such as mini-missiles and grenades, heavy discharges from your forearm cannons and perhaps the discharge from a flamethrower. Also keep in mind that even if she does defend herself from the killing plasma of a flamethrower, or block a mini-missiles, the searing heat from the explosions can get through a psionic's defense. Her mind is a weapon, but if she is saturated with weapon's fire her ability to think on her feet will be sorely taxed."

Hinoto gestured to the next item.

"NH-18 Adaptive weapons are, for all intents and purposes, self-aware nanomachine colonies that take the form of slimy mounds. These entities can reshape themselves to look like any nekovalkyrja, and then promptly reshape themselves to have their torso be a giant maw with their legs becoming an amorphous tail and their arms into long pseudopods which could then assail you in the form of anything from bladed hooks to rotating sawblades."

"Because of their unique composition, they will be very hard to take down with ballistic weaponry such as railguns and gauss cannons. The concussive impact of mini-missiles and your forearm cannons on heavy setting will slow them down but won't harm them very much. To defeat them, you will need energy weapons of a high enough output to consume their bodies beyond their ability to compensate for it."

"The plasma rifle and the flamethrower will both be ideal for this task. Aetheric weaponry would serve as well, but remember that in this region of space, aetheric-based attacks will be significantly less lethal than they should normally be."

Hinoto moved on to the next item of the list, which was the NH-28 NIWS.

"The NH-28 is many things. It is a nodal weapon which, like the NH-18, can easily regenerate and generate its own weapons. The difference is that it retains a stable humanoid form, typically is powered by an aether generator, and has inbuilt power armor-grade armor. Its strength and agility is usually greater than that of a power armored infantry soldier."

"The bright side of our situation is that if you encounter a NIWS, it will be devoid of aether-powered weaponry. It will regenerate, produce other more conventional weapons from its nodal system and such... but you can destroy them with any good anti-armor weapon. To make sure that a NH-28 is defeated, you must entirely destroy its torso section - if the aether power supply is gone, it won't recover. Leave it, though, and the NIWS can in time self-repair and go after you again."

Hinoto pointed to the Black Mindy.

"The power armors the Daughter of Eve have are zesuaium armored Black-colored Mindy. The zesuaium armor will make them extremely resistant so only your best anti-armor weapons will be able to harm them. With aether not being as dependable, the Plasma Rifle is your second best alternative. Seeing that their Mindy has a flame-retardant cloak, bear in mind that they can use it to protect themselves from a plasma flamethrower attack."

"The Black Mindy is equipped with mono-molecular-edge blades on the knees and elbows plus spikes over their shoulders that will make it superior to your Daisy once they get into close quarter."

"Typically, the Black Mindy will use an aether saber-rifle for its main weapon. Even with aether diminished, they will likely still use them. Do remember that for either ranged or melee attack, the aetheric saber-rifle remains a potent weapon - a sword hit will not instantly kill you if you are luckily, but it doesn't mean it will not to damage."

"Their Mindy also has a scalar cannon mounted over their other forearm. While your have your barrier shield on, it will not be a menace to you. However, if your barrier collapses, their forearm-mounted scalar cannon can do harm to yourself, your power armor's electronics and can even prematurely detonate any ammunition you carry."

"They will have mini-missiles mounted on their upper legs, which may deliver anything from anti-missile countermeasures, to subspace detonating warheads which - if you are hit - will temporarily collapse your barrier to standard homing warheads with destructive payloads. Mini-missile volleys can be deadly if several connect with you so make sure to have counter-measures ready for such an eventuallity."

"To conclude with the Black Mindy is usually equipped with a double-charge teleportation system. In this environment, however, teleporting is very hazardous: our evaluation estimates a 50% chance that a power armor may not survive a teleportation. They will probably not use it... but if you present them will a do-or-die alternative, they might risk it. Be wary."

Hinoto gestured to the last item: the Mishhumachina.

"Mishhumachina are well armored, well-protected, big, not very mobile and capable of stealth. They are, justifiably, tough nuts to crack."

"Team effort and the heaviest weaponry is required to acceptably bring one down. with no aether energy swords available to be use, you have little reason to risk being on range of the tentacles, so, don't."

"My recommendation is to have plasma rifles, mini-missiles and gauss bazooka on hand to take it down. Plasma rifles will deliver all-around good damage against its barrier and armor. Mini-Missiles can be used to damage it in volleys, or to collapses its barrier shielding temporarily with a subspace detonator warhead. The Gauss Bazooka, once the barrier is down, will prove the most devastating."

"Remain wary of the plasma flamethrower it has on it's underbelly - its ventral side is not a weak spot. The mishhumachina also has mini-missile launchers and gattling cannons to saturate its surrounding with fire as needed."

"Destroying the eyes and ears will destroy all of its sensors, making it blind. The tentacles emerge from three armored clusters - on the right flank, left flank and rear; destroy one of those and you deprive it of a degree of mobility and a good chunk of its weaponry."

Hinoto motioned to the volumetric window to have it closed away.

"The Daisy power armor is the unit of choice, I believe, for this operation. It has a non-aether-dependent power supply and excellent semi-regenerating yamataium armor which will help you last the distance, with a rechargeable barrier shield in addition. Its inbuilt forearm cannons will be adequate to deal with the lighter threats and then some."

"Weapon-wise, the plasma rifle and the gauss bazooka will cover up for most of what the forearm cannons will not be able to do. I would recommend having countermeasure missiles to counter-mini-missile use and create openings in the shielding of any mishhumachina you encounter. There might not be just one."

"Seeing you will likely not be able to come back, I suggest you carry in-hand a third handheld weapon that you will use up early and then discard."

Most things that Yukari could worry about never came to her attention.

However, plugged into Miharu as deeply as she was, she was not used to her capability to be in tune with the crew and all the noise that came with it. She had an eye on every crewmember, an ear next to ever pair of lips, a finger on the pulse of every heart.

Mara's impatience. Hinoto's calm. Tsuya's confusion. Asher's confidence.

From behind her visor everything carried a neon bluish tint, just to remind her she was connected to the ship and not seeing the conversation between two of the sprites in the Armor Bay.

Ichigo's fixation. Nimura's emptiness. Nyton's cold. Kai's warmth.

The battle before them required she be that deep in the ship. The slightest miscalculation on her part killed the ship. Strategy, engineering, medical, infantry — if she failed to properly fly the vessel, everyone and everything would die, from the youngest sprite to the ancient principle of freedom.

Nao, flustered. Yuzuki, unflappable. Sanjuro, afraid. Miyoko, indifferent.

It was not so dramatic. She was one component of the crew, one piece of the machine. So many things could go wrong, fail, collapse, crack. Everything had to run just so to ensure the whole mission went off "without a square", she thought.

Rin seemed ready for the fight. Kyou was, too, if unsure.

Sanri was ready to serve. Masako, ready to lead.

Tom, keeping her and everyone else together.

She smiled, a finger going to the band around her neck. She could feel the fabric through her glove. Yukari could be torn between wanting to hate and wanting to love, or she could just focus on loving everyone. Since the latter was the truth, it was much easier to follow. Miharu hummed in the background, some koto tune she had played for Kotori.

Miharu could not spy on the Kotoris. Yukari, for her part, did not try.

She definitely heard and felt the icy anger behind Sanjuro's declaration. Options spread out like a fan above the medical officer's head, including asking one of the very sweet nurses to zap the officer with an NSP.

Yukari had a different approach.

A volumetric window popped up to the side of Sanjuro and Miyoko, showing a faintly smiling Shosa with a translucent blue visor over her eyes. "Ashitaka-Heisho, is my operations officer ready for bridge duty? Without her, I fear we face a very certain doom, so I appreciate you being quick with her Soul Transfer."

Sanjuro, slightly startled by Yukari's sudden appearance, exchanged a single glance between the two before setting his eyes back onto Miyoko. The interruption actually came at a welcome time; with Sanjuro's bitter opinion of the science officer laid bare he no longer had the need or the want to say anything more to her, nor did he feel the need to tolerate her any longer. Sanjuro turned to Yukari's volumetric visage, stone-faced once more, and gave a single nod before turning around to begin prepping himself for his own Soul Transfer.

"She is ready," the medical officer gave a solemn answer to his commanding officer.

Kai listened and took stock of what Hinoto said. Something that he had expected had been subtly noted by the pale sprite; the LASR would be almost useless in this battle. The Yamataian, through various sessions of searching, had found even more effective weapons than the LASR, on the Civilian market no less!

Still, he was thinking about his Daisy's loadout. He would have to have an even mix of all the kinds of mini-missiles, a Plasma rifle would be much desired, and perhaps carrying a Gauss bazooka if he needed that extra punch. For the final, throwaway weapon, however, Kai wasn't sure what he should get. He would look over the inventory one more time before making a decision.

“Hey, I was wondering, could you - Oh, sorry. Pardon me, please.”

The voice was Yuzuki. She had entered the medical bay at a quick walking pace, but seeing the medical officer talking to Yukari over the ship’s nodal system had cut her off. If she had been nervous and rushed the first time she had walked into the medical bay for a backup, she seemed much more composed and settled now.

Now she stood by patiently near the door, waiting for the doctor and the executive officer to finish whatever they had been discussing before stating her business.

The backup was a welcome reprieve, but before long, Miyoko had to sit up and return to reality, which was still all-too-saturated with Sanjuro. As she was rising to her feet, she could already see the doctor steeling himself to speak, and she wasn't disappointed.

"But let me make one thing perfectly clear, Saito-Heisho," the doctor began, his voice taking a tone to match the seriousness of his expression. There were no jokes or courtesies to be had now. "Kurohoshi-Juni may wish it differently, but I do not respect you, not in the slightest. I think you are listless, without passion, unmotivated and lazy...and I believe you are a liability, a detriment, and perhaps even a danger to this crew."

The Yamataian was half-stunned for a moment--partially, at least, because it was probably the longest speech she'd ever heard from the man at one time. As she recovered, the shock quickly turned to rage, and she gritted her teeth as she leaned in toward him, keeping her own voice steely cold through her response. "And I believe that you are an anal-retentive, self-important--"

Before she could add any more hyphenated insults to the list, Yukari abruptly appeared in the air between the two squabbling Yamataians, cutting her off. She relaxed a little, and had to restrain herself from a grin upon hearing the XO's words. I have to give that woman a pat on the back... "I'll be there shortly, Shosa." With that, Miyoko turned briskly away from Sanjuro to leave the room.

Still, though Sanjuro might have been done with her, Miyoko wasn't done with him just yet. As she walked out, she unclipped her datapad--the one he'd given her for her birthday--from her belt and dropped it to the table with a thud. "Pai says hello," she announced, keeping her voice steady and already moving toward the door. "You would have known days ago if you could pull your head out of your ass long enough to listen to somebody else for five seconds." With that, she practically sprinted out of the lab, barely dodging Yuzuki on her way past. A confident stride would really suit her mood better, but she knew better than to give Sanjuro any chance to return the datapad to her.

Tsuya listened thoughtfully to Hinoto's description of the enemy forces, her ears flicking now and then. She had already heard the basics from Nyton (damn him, she thought, and forced the scowl off her face), but she was glad to be provided the extra detail. Once the sprite had finished talking, she decided she had a question - one that would be better answered by her fearless leader. She raised her hand, then waited a few moments before speaking.

"Kurohoshi-juni, what weapons would you prefer we take with us? Will I be able to carry a rifle and a flamethrower?"

With Hinoto finished, Masako began to type up a little note on her wrist computer. "I'll get to that in a moment, Yamada-hei," the small Warrant Officer replied before projecting a list of names.

Team 1:
Masako - Leader
Nimura - Rifleman
Tsuya - Grenadier

Team 2:
Kai - Leader
Kyou - Rifleman
Asher - Grenadier

Shuttle:
Sanri - Pilot
Mara - Pilot
Sigurd - Guard

"Okay, this will be our team set up." she stated as she highlighted the leaders. "Team leaders will carry standard Atmospheric Plasma Rifles attached to their Daisies as primary hand-held weapons with Countermeasure Augmentation Pods on the leg hard points." Masako began as she looked up the inventory in a separate window. "Secondary Weapons will be 50mm Gauss Bazookas while Tertiary weaponry will be up to the individual."

"Our Riflemen, or standard infantry, will be armed to deal mainly with the light threats." the short Warrant Officer moved on and highlighted the Riflemen. "They will be armed with Accelerated Plasma Rifles and attached 50mm Rapid Grenade Launcher as a Primary Weapon with Countermeasure Augmentation Pods on the leg points. I will leave their secondary and tertiary weaponry up to them."

Pausing for a moment, Masako moved the highlight to Grenadiers. "Our heavy weapons personnel will be dedicated to dealing with the tougher threats," she announced as she glanced at both Tsuya and Asher. "Primary weapons will be 50mm Bazookas with Offensive Augmentation Pods on the leg points. Secondary and Tertiary will be Flamethrowers and Accelerated Plasma Rifles with attached RGLs."

After another pause, the raven-haired Warrant Officer would look up at her unit. "Any concerns with this arrangement?" she asked in a professional tone.

A devious cackle spilled from Tsuya's throat before she could stop it or even realize it was coming. Only after it escaped did she manage to put her hands over her mouth and get rather pink with embarrassment.

"Hell no!" Asher responded in an unprofessional tone, from his spot in the rear of the group. The Yamataian took to bouncing on his toes in excitement, only helped along by Tsuya's sudden cackling. "Man oh man, this iss' gunna' be good!"

Various nekos shifted about and listened to Hinoto, some thinking out loud their ideas on what they were facing. Some let out groans of disappointment that they would not have certain weapons available to them. Others were just noting things and calculating over it carefully in their minds. Ururu scratched at the black hair that lined her ear before looking around. "Well that sucks. Looks like the rest of us got stuck with guard duty." she remarked to the neko standing behind her absently.

Ururu then blinked a couple times before she realized something was a little off. "Er... who are you?" she asked of a neko who was moving forward and raising her hand for Masako's attention.

"Excuse me, Kurohoshi-Juni, but what assignment could I assist with." asked Shizuka Shimabumi. She had shed the chef's hat and apron and wore a yellow paneled uniform along with an NSP holstered to her belt.

Azuki was busy accepting crew members for ST processing. While she was trained and practiced in the procedure she found herself all alone. That was starting to make her mad. "There you go! All done!" she announced cheerfully to her latest patient. The neko got out of the device and moved on to let the next one take her place. Azuki turned to face the machine and begin adjusting it while thinking to herself. Where the hell is Ayumu? She was supposed to be helping me here and she just goes and disappears-

"Here you go Azuki-chan. I picked these up from the Armory for us." Ayumu announced before handing a pistol over to her. Azuki almost jumped but still let out a slight 'eep' before turning around. Facing the senior nurse, Azuki was now staring at the hand grip of an standard NSP and an extra battery pack. Taking the NSP in her hands Azuki forgot about her anger and was confused for a second. "Why did you get us weapons?" she asked.

"Well, it wouldn't hurt for us to have something to help us protect the patients with should the enemy board the ship. After all you never know what may happen. Best not to have too much of a replay of what happened before. Besides I figured you could use the practice running the ST machine."

Azuki shook her head and immediately fixed the weapon and holster to her belt without a single word. Ayumu meanwhile bent over to finish the adjustments on the ST machine to prepare it for the next patient.

Kyou frowned, having pulled up their weapons inventory as Masako was finishing up. Not much choice of effective weaponry here... Her secondary choice was quickly decided, but her tertiary was uncertain. LASRs don't have the punch to help at all against the misshumachina, really, but there's not much else that would be good for area supression available... I guess I'll go with that anyway... With that settled, her frown melted away, replaced by a thoughtful look. "Kurohoshi-Juni, will we be deploying anyone in the 1C 'SaS' armors? They could be an asset, but I'm not sure how well the stealth armor would work in the gate itself, or against their sensor systems..."

"So, how do you think this all turns out?"

The sharp but playful jab of an elbow poked the rib of someone. Eiko didn't really care where it landed in the quickly-growing mass of sprites that were pouring into the subdeck. Anyone was fair game for a good conversation. The Juni hadn't called the briefing to order, after all.

Kuni rolled her eyes.

"We're all going to die. Durp."

Target acquired. "Really? I thought the Taisa said we'd be fine," retorted Eiko with a sly grin as she curled an arm around her prey.

"Nine to one odds," Kuni shot back, snaking her own arm up and around Eiko's shoulders, pulling the sprite down a little and letting her hand dangle, "Against. They're probably already making our backup bodies and getting them ready. Coz' we're going to die, that fast."

"Come on Kuni~~," Eiko whined. "Can't you be a little more positive?" Eiko easily twisted her slim body out from the grip of her sister, crouching on the floor and lazily curling into a ball, Grasping her knees with her hands. The expression behind her flowery pink irises hurt. "You don't always have to be a downer."

Rolling her shoulders, Kuni cocked her head to the side, grinning faintly down at the unfortunate sprite on the floor. Most of the other sprites were spread out, having realized that Freeman-Juni wasn't going to be giving whatever motivational speech he had in mind until both Heisho arrived. They already had Ichigo - now they needed Yuzuki.

"I'm always positive," said Kuni, patting her AMES-gloves together. "I think you've got too much energy, and you're just bouncing off walls. Want me to help?"

"Well someone has to be--" one of Eiko's hands snuck out and pinched her sister on the rear end. "--the source of good vibes down here!" She jumped to her feet with a big grin, her curly beige locks of hair bouncing like springs. "Buck up!"

Kuni jumped back reflexively after the sting. "Oh, you," Kuni chirped, "You want to play, then?"

She closed the distance, scooped Eiko straight off the ground, and laughed triumphantly as they both hit the deck. In a few seconds' time, Kuni had Eiko right where she wanted her; being tickled, hard.

A few other sprites stopped their minor conversations and divergences to at least watch.

"Break it up," Ozuno offered half-heartedly, but Cho, with a glance to the Juni pacing on the other side of the room, actually stepped forward and pulled Kuni up. Ozuno, deprived of her entertainment, reluctantly helped Eiko to her feet.

"You two should know better," the chilly sprite scolded quietly, "Freeman-Juni is right there. If you're going to wrestle, do it elsewhere."

Eiko had barely any time to laugh when the fun was ended. Just like that. She glared at Cho in frustration after giving a nod of thanks to Ozuno.

Freeman-Juni hasn't started the meeting yet," Eiko grumbled. "It's not my fault you're such a negative Nancy." But nothing was going to hold her down for long, and, even by the end of her venting, a smile had appeared on her face. "Negative Nancy! Ha!"

Eiko was known for laughing at her own bad jokes. Kuni gave out her own light laugh - when Cho blinked, opened her mouth, and snapped it shut with the most hilarious look of frustration, Kuni's laughter degenerated into a series of giggles, which ended with a snort.

Satisfied with her work, Eiko nodded, sending her curls bouncing again. "See? Everyone's happier now!" It didn't really matter that nobody else was laughing, it seemed. "I did my job."

Free again, Kuni looped her arm around Eiko's shoulders again, in the exact same manner as before, and said, "Whatever you say."

Cho put a finger to her temple, closing her eyes. Ozuno leaned over and said something quietly into Cho's pale, blue-furred ear that caused her to twitch it, and wince slightly. Ozuno put her hands up, turned, and went back to where she had been sitting against one of the panels. Cho gave the pair another exasperated look.

"Just... don't throw each other around, all right?" Cho offered, breathing out a sigh, "Not in front of the Juni at least. It's unprofessional."

"Ok," Eiko said with a small wave of her hand. With Kuni in tow, she took a few steps away from the other and leaned against one of the metal walls of the subdeck. "It's just," she started when she thought nobody else was around. "Everybody seems so tense. Her head fell to one side where it rested on the round of Kuni's shoulder. "Why be that way?"

"We're all about to die," Kuni stated, matter-of-factly, "That's why."

"But does that mean you have to be so tense?" Eiko blurted out incredulously. "Honestly. I don't see what's so difficult here. It's our job to do the mission, right? It doesn't matter what happens to us, so why be worried about it?"

Kuni fell quiet for a moment, then she rested her head atop Eiko's head, fairly comfortably.

"You are not afraid at all?"

"No. I'm... curious."

"Of?"

"Everything. The battle we're going to be in. What we'll have to fix. If we'll have to fight. If I'll get a promotion or something. And you all talk about dying like it's a bad thing. I'm curious. I wanna know, you know?"

"Sure," Kuni replied, easily.

Kuni felt the hearty pat of her sister's hand on her back.

"I wanna know, but I don't blame everyone else for being afraid," she said with a playful headbutt. "Not all of us can be so brave!"

"Brave or crazy?"

"Shut up."
 
Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Nobody had asked her to explain the need for a second transfer, and for that, Yuzuki was thankful.

When she appeared on the subdeck, she glanced around in a silent headcount to confirm what she already suspected - yes, Yuzuki was one of the last ones there. She went directly to Freeman-Juni and bowed.

"Sorry, Juni-san," she said, "I had to visit with somebody. I hope I have not been holding you."

"It's fine, Heisho," Tom said with a shake of the head. He gestured to the crowd. "Please."

The sprites fell in under Yuzuki's orders. Everyone was looking up expectantly at the engineer standing near the subdeck's main console. Tom took a deep breath, and let it out slowly.

"Everyone. We all know the odds against us. We all know what we must do. The Taisa has made very clear the magnitude of our mission and what she expects of us. I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about you."

He took a silent moment to look over them all with his grey eyes.

"I can never understand what it feels like to be a sprite. The weight of the responsibilities that you bear. Some of you haven't been around for more than a few months, and yet the empire asks so much of you. We ask so much of you."

His closed his eyes and took another deep breath.

"But I can imagine the emotions running in your blood... impulses so vivid, so real that they're alien. It is something each of us experiences before a mission. Some of you may be frightened by them, others motivated. These responses are a natural part of you. Of all of us."

His eyes opened and continued.

"But there is so much more to the world than the happenings on the Miharu. There is a universe out there where war isn't the only thing to look for... where people choose a life based on their interests, their skills and their dreams."

His expression softened.

"I want you to dream. And I want to show you that universe. When this is over, I will invite each and every one of you to Ralt. I will show you our traditions and our culture. I hope that my home is worthy... and that you will honor me with your attendance."

He bowed deeply to the audience before him, only straightening after many seconds had passed. His face was firm, determined.

"Because it is I who am indebted to you, you who so willingly endure the horrors of war without question... you who keep our Miharu, and by extent, all of us, alive and well despite the grueling hours of hard work you do every day. I am indebted... and I am so proud of you. Thank you."

He placed his hands down on the console in front of him with a nod. Each sprite would then receive her orders digitally. The engineering corps would be split into two teams. The first, a defense force led by Ichigo-Heisho, would don Daisy armors and serve as ship defense. The second, composed of Rin, Nao and the remaining sprites, would be headed by Yuzuki-Heisho and serve as an emergency repair team. Tom would head the operation at the console and also assist the teams as necessary.

"We have mere minutes before the mission begins. Please take your positions immediately. Dismissed."
