I really hate it when fundamental questions like this are lost in the confusion of psuedo-intellectual epistolising on (meta)physics with a quick nod to referencing a video game for information on neurologic processes.
 
After 14 years of consideration, I think basically the method used to backup minds in the RP is not really as important as the results. In the same way that it doesn't matter what your ship is powered by, as long as it has enough power to do what your characters need it to do.
