Serendipity-class

an Experimental ship class. there will be two of the type, one with experimental Aether weapons, and one without. I have Wes' permission to use the Aether weapons. All the problems and shortcomings of the class are discussed within the article, and it has clearly stated weaknesses to counter its strengths.

Serendipity

Oh, and the two red links are the pages for the individual ships, which don't need to be created unless this class is approved. Thank you.

Also, civvie submission to go with this: https://stararmy.com/roleplay/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5804

Thank you, Doshii.

And yes, Uso, I know size and mass are two different things.

This ship uses advanced materials that keep up its defensive value at a lower mass, has very high powered engines, is hollow, carries mostly hollow, lightweight craft, Uses an advanced shielding system that takes less space and mass, and let's not forget, that everything on it is approved.

I'm sorry (not really) that i tried to make an interesting ship for GM use as a plotship with specific, obvious, and well documented drawbacks, that was able to be used as a platform for RP that players actually enjoy.

I forgot that creativity was frowned upon in this ROLEPLAYING site.

Oh! I missed that post from Wes. My mistake.

Regardless, this could still be salvaged. Kai seems willing to use the table, after all.

Not following the rules is frowned upon.

Kai also isn't exactly liking the idea of having to tone down his ship to be in line with site standards. This ship is the same mass as a plumeria yet can carry nearly twice the amount of stuff without any drawbacks.

without any drawbacks?

WHAT?

This ship has drawbacks built into it. you obviously have not read the article, Uso, in which I go in depth to discuss the drawbacks of the ship's class. I SPECIFICALLY GAVE THE SHIP DRAWBACKS.

I decreased the speeds greatly from what they really should have been

I decreased the amount of hangar space from what it origjnally was

I discussed in great detail the fact that it has more weapons than the generators can handle.

I discussed that the ship will turn itself off if you tried actual combat.

This ship is a prototype, to be used in RP as a plotship where its drawbacks and advantages will be researched and lead to the development of a production class with decreased theoretical capabilities but more reliability. This class isn't meant to be normal, it's a special case, yes, and I don't mean to set precedents with it. I mean for it to be something that causes problems for the plot it's in so the players and GM will need to find workarounds when they get in bad situations.

Don't tell me it has no drawbacks.

Also, I did try to use the stat table system. It is quite confusing and I came up with a completely different number than you did.

Its speeds are far greater than what they should be given the ship's mass. That is what the stat tables are there for, to help determine what is and isn't too much given a ship's size and distribution of mass.

And this falls way outside of what is considered fair according to the stat tables.

Chill, Kai.

I've sent a PM to Nashoba to check this out again. Kai, you should try to talk to him over IRC, or talk to SSharp.

Uso, you might want to back off. No need for things to get heated.

If it continues, I'm going to start doling out post warnings for Admins to check. Or close the thread until the required persons show up. Should be approached calmly and not in a passive aggressive nature or outright hostility. So preasu, keep it nice and chill in here.

Okay, I still have some reservations about this clas

I would like to see how it measures up on the stat tables.

Starship Stat Tables

Stat Tables were suggested, not enforced if my interpretation of Nashoba's post means anything.

Therefore, please stop talking about Stat Tables. Furthermore, I have never used the Stat Tables for any of my submissions or made it the standard by which I would approve a submission. It is not in the Rules and Guidelines since last I checked -- and I will check after finishing this post, to be sure -- that every ship must follow these Stat Tables, and these things have never even been put into the NTSE so far as I know: they have been simply discussed in the Roleplay and Setting Elements forum, and never been put in as a real submission.

So, on to my actual review of the article.

I think that it's perfectly fine as a special case intended for a plotship role. I don't doubt it will be used, so it will be a contribution to the setting.

It isn't overpowered, since it has perfectly fine drawbacks. Maybe it should have a self-destruct sequence for when it is stuck in combat situations? Deny information to the enemy instead of simply shutting off and drifting away.

Its red links need to be fixed, too.

Don't be an ass, Zack.

SSharp, it's No. 5 in the rules. The starship's got to have proper DR stats.

What "proper" means, however, is what must be figured out for this ship, and whether an exception can be made for a one-off plot device.

The rest still stands. I feel that this submission should be approved once those red links are fixed.

[EDIT: I removed the first paragraph I had previously. It didn't really have anything to do with the thread.]

Uso, I must admit I'm having a hard time taking your calls to use that attribute table seriously when I've NEVER seen you use it yourself. The system itself has a few ambiguities, and I've already hit one problem regarding Base vs Adjusted SP with it. As far as I know most of the player base neither knows nor cares about it, and it's inappropriate of you to try and block a submission this way.

This thread is about the submission, not Stat Tables. Please keep it that way. Make a different thread if you want to talk about Stat Tables.

First, the issue of using the Stat Tables is to help ensure that starships are now more reasonable. That a ship design can not do everything at max potential. More weapons means giving up something elsewhere. I asked Kai to do the Stat Tables because I wanted to see how it fared and then see what could be done to help the design.

So let me first address a few other issues then I'll make my suggestions:

Threshold 4 - Nope. From the Damage Rating Rules
The reason multiple shields are allowed is only to allow defense against multiple weapon types. A ship, regardless of the shield type(s), only has one threshold - equal to their class (1 through 5).

So the Serendipity-Class only can have a Threshold of 2. That's a rule, not a guide.

Ok, Stat Table
Origin is 3 years old YE 29 - 32. So it gets its full SP of 20. Origin does not use KFY systems, designers or manufacturing equipment so they do not get the KFY Bonus
My Literal
Total SP 20
STL 4 4
CDD 2 3
Fold 4 5
SDR 3 6
Shield 4

Subtotal 18 20

Utility 6 7 26 Craft

Total 24 27

When it comes to choosing values, I prefer the idea of choosing which is closer to the desired number than rounding up. It gives a little bit of wiggle room. That can be use to enhance roleplay. eg, in this case the Fold is operating at slightly above its Optimum level, so it could require frequent maintenance, or constant adjustment while in use.

Now, in my take on the SDR, I took the design limitation into account. Since the ship can not utilize the full fire power all the time, then to my way of thinking means it does not have enough stuff to support it, so I halved it to reflect that they can only fire at half ROF.

Now even with these tweaks to accommodate the Roleplay factor, the ship is still 4 points too high.

At this point you could either a) drop the fighters, or b) lower some of the ship's performance. Since its a test bed having the fighters on other escort ships allows you to keep all the other performance values. And lets you have the 2 shuttles.

Then the wiki page should be changed to say it was established in YE 29 instead of YE 30 in the stats rather than in the fluff text.

We're not reviewing Origin Industries.

KEEP TO THE TOPIC.

[EDIT]

Uso, you are REQUIRED to provide constructive criticism if you wish to continue in this thread. The next time you don't provide more than a snide one-liner, I will DELETE your post. Hell, if it includes ANY snide one-liner I will DELETE it.
