That's pretty, more than I could come up with. I wish I had the money to hire some of the great anime mecha designers.

I'm thinking of setting it to AdamKop and seeing what he can make out of it. he did the 3D models for the Sharie and Eikan.

Wes, you baiting me?

Not really keen on a lot of your core concept but I did get a sense of what it was meant to be: To take biological shapes then funnel them through technological design.

I figured I'd do a quick 3D sketch and sculpt rather than do a long-writeup that you probably wouldn't read.

Techsplination:
While highly prepared for the rigours of space, the majority of StarArmy of Yamatai ships -- while perfectly capable of entering dense planetary environments (typically those of gas-giants and oceans) they were subject to a number of operational problems, especially during long missions.

Given the nature of deep-scanning equipment and its failure to penetrate many ocean-worlds and gas-planets, a specialised vessel would allow the SAOY to not only ferret out threats hiding in these environments but also conceal supply depots and research bases far away from the prying eyes of outside threats.

You could go with a segmented dome roof on the top and then another further ahead on the bottom giving it a kind of "orca, fighter-jet and a lancaster bomber had a baby" look, kinda like the cockpit/control area of the Outlaw Star.

Yes, its to scale. Yes, it sub-divides neatly. Yes, you can have the geometry if you like.
No, I don't expect to be paid for this. Yes, you're welcome.

And now time for song!

Edit:
Kinda crude but some ideas about turret placement: Could be worth putting a pair of light turrets on the tips of the "shoulders" and then a third on the bottom like your original sketch.

Edit:
Okay, since you don't like that how about something closer to the original concept art?

I figure the bottom front pods swivel out and have landing gear in them. The back set work similarly, swivelling down and then extending plane like landing gear. The body of the top front pods would probably have missile tubes and the top fin and rear boom would have ECM/ECCM, flares and communications gear.

Entry and egress either occurs through the topside or through a hatch in the back with the container. The container would have those big swinging doors you want, but also mean you could spec this for a mission.

I'm debating adding a very simple set of arms in the front underneath the front dome so it can do minor repair and construction work.

If you don't bite again, I'm probably going to try and produce something civilian out of this one.

The above artwork actually feels more NMX than SAoY to me. I say polish it and make it your own - especially considering how this melted candle looks a lot like another design you've already got in the works.

This said, no one was baiting you Osaka. I mean, I've my own dropship design - which I've dubbed the Iruka - which overlaps most of what Wes means to have happen on this one. But Wes didn't remember/didn't care/wanted something of his own... so more power to him, I say. So far as it doesn't prevent me from using my own later, I don't really care.

Fred: What about the second one?

And yeah, the bait thing was a joke. I'm just using it as an excuse to get some practice, really.

To be honest, the second reminds me more of an insect (honey bees coming foremost to mind) than anykind of marine life.

Interesting. I followed the look of the orca from the side to the letter but it just looked so damn boring so I tried to keep it interesting.

The second one reminds me of the Combine dropship from Half Life 2, with the organic shape and the two "fins" at the front coupled with two engines on the rear of a central body and a carried pod. I never thought I'd be so terrified of something that looks like a flying whale-shark before I played HL2...

So took a shot at a design for this. I tried to keep as much of the whale look as possible but add a bit of Hind gunship to it. Figure the dirsal fin can fold back for high speed flight and the two flippers coukd be more like the weapon pod carrying winglets on an apache or hind or cobra gunship :3

Will be doing more sketched after i get back home tonight

Yes, yes! Now we're talking, Osaka! It reminds me some of the Combine dropship too, which I like. To be frank, a lot of Yamatai's small craft designs like the T7 are extremely boring looking. This is scary and that's good. I'd like the forward fins to be more thin and wing-like. Consider adding a ball joint between them and the main body. The drop pod's shape doesn't really lend itself to utility though. How are we going to skin this thing?

Gunsight's also looking rather great (and professional) but it's missing a vital feature, side doors for troops (on Osaka's, we could put the doors on the pod thing). It's important for that "Huey" imagery I'm going for. Otherwise it looks fantastic.

The Iruka concept hasn't seen any work since 2012 and it's much bigger than the small craft I'm looking for so it's not really a factor.

Wes: I'm doing a landing-gear study at the moment. I'll make the changes you suggested when I'm done, though I'll probably sleep before then.

Could you fetch some reference photos of a Huey's interior/door system?

The forward lower pods are going to be housing the landing-gear for the front along with some VTOL kit. Though I think adding some canard style fins ontop would be ideal.

Again, the more reference photos of "what you want" that you can get me and the more specific you can be, the easier this is for me.

F**k me landing gear is complicated.

@OsakanOne it always amazes me at how fast you work. Even when I was familiar with DoGAm it would take me longer to come up with a concept and you've made two.

Amazing work.
I like using lots of variants of simple flowing parts to describe a simple shape. When I've got the basics up, I then go back and make more complex parts to stop things from looking too samey or I introduce interrupts to tidy things up.

The soft flowing part of the first one actually started life as a cubic sphere that I just pushed, pulled and sculpted into a hull shape I liked. Everything after that is just parts I knocked up to describe the rest of it.

The hardest part honestly is knowing what I want: If someone else is telling me those things, I can do a lot in a very short amount of time. One of the reasons something like my mecha take forever is because a fore-arm or a thigh is about as complicated as an entire starship in terms of its number of parts, moving or otherwise. Its also because I'm not working from someone elses spec and my own keeps changing right when I think I have what I want.

The doors are there in pencil Wes, I forgot to ink them as i was in a rush to leave and head to the theater :p

Will have an updated copy in a while. Got stuff ttake care of first

My Orca is better than your Orca. :p

And since this has been brought up in previous Nepleslia tech submissions, I see no reason why Yamatai should get a free pass on it. Isn't the policy to avoid naming tech submissions similarly to prevent confusion and encourage originality?

Fine, we'll call it the Blackfish.
