This thread is for out-of-character discussion of Fred's YSS Byakuren plot.

I need the people ready and willing to participate in this plot to sound off. Just so I can have a quick headcount of whom is alert and active enough to participate at the beginning.

As I believe Wes has already mentioned elsewhere, Reika's pretty much ready to transfer off the Eucharis -- I can bring in my character whenever you're ready to start the plot, Fred.

RP Start!

Thread 0.2 is yours to post into. Those people whom have characters available (freed from previous plots or approved) can post into the thread at will.

Bear in mind that the point of view of the post is skewed toward a Star Army soldier's perspective, though SAINT PCs will also receive similar treatment upon presenting themselves as well.

We're in a 'waiting room' phase. You guys have the weekend to post yourselves in - then I'll start the meeting proper with those PCs whom will have made a show of presence.

PCs posted in late will be more touchy: either I'll assume they were 'part of the crowd' and already there, or they will have entry points later on (since, ironically, the presenter for the briefing will not tolerate late arrivals once she does truly begin the meeting).

I guess it is safe to say that Fuyu will be arriving with the others? Or would she already be present? Heck, she could even be with the ship which gives me breathing room to finish the character sheet.

When the T7 shuttle launched from 2nd Squadron Starbase, it was carrying only Sune, Reika, and Konoka. It's possible it might have made pickups but it'd be just as easy to have another shuttle arrive.

It'd actually make some degree of sense to have Fuyu with the ship. While it might've been interesting to have her at the briefing, like Kosuka she's a bit of an exception.

Yeah, okay, that works.

I'm officially approved, Fred, if you want to take a look at my character. I'll try and post when I get home tonight, but it might be late, and I have work early.

Hey Tom -- you really should mention the actual name of your player character at least once during a post :D .

I wouldn't have recognised Mori Saku from your description of her, if not for the fact that I also had a character in the Seventh Fleet plot before it ended prematurely and remembered seeing her briefly in one or more of the Command rp threads.

That said, I also noticed you've made some changes to the character's article since the last time I saw her -- namely rewritten her background so that she's no longer an officer -- presumably because Fred put the Joto Hei rank limit on newly created SAINT characters so Reika has someone to boss around :p . Saku still needs to have a rank of some kind though and you've left that part of her article completely blank, even though you've already started to RP with her again.

Ah. I knew I should've linked somewhere in that post to the actual bio, but the choice to not mention her name was an intentional one. Then I realized that's confusing as heck! XD Edited accordingly.

The rank thing I left up in the air because I wanted Fred to have a final say on it. I actually wanted to make her a Yonto Hei for backstory reasons, but felt something like that would require a conversation or two.

No worries though. I retooled Saku to work with you and look forward to what you come up with. :)

Hei works for now.

Since Andrew's plot unfortunately didn't quite 'lift off', I agreed to Tom's request to 'repurpose' Saku as a character. Essentially, this is a bit of a retcon, but one that felt acceptable in my opinion so to not waste what he seemed to feel was a decent character concept for the occasion.

Khasidel, you hit the rank issue on the nail.

I would like to discourage the use of Yonto Hei for Saku: if SAINT is having you in this room, it's because the character showed some measure of competency and dependability - which only comes from real experience. Meaning that earning medals/ranks is something we must assume even the newer PCs in this plot have up their belts.

Ok. How about we strike at Nito Hei? That gives an idea of experience and having completed a mission or two.

Tom, I'd seeing an odd trend here with our SAINT agents.

Reika, 2 years old, Nito Heisho
Izumi, 3 years old, Joto Heisho
Suzuyu, 5 years old, Itto Hei
Saku, 6 years old, Nito Hei

So, the older you get, the lower ranked you are? Wierd! :D

Though perhaps there's a way to play off that. SAINT often sends its people on high risk operations, some extra-legal... though it's usually fine as long as you don't get caught. Operatives are generally expendable, though usually too well trained to not be respawned if they die. Still, after a failure, the debrief usually comes with a demotion.

Perhaps some of the older operative PCs are not only aware of that, but have also suffered of such? Portraying this might add to the ruthless portrayal of the organization you are part of.

Also seeing how you cope with that could be interesting. After all, some of you are well used operatives in contrast to young Reika whom was just freshly promoted... just after having stepped off from a Princess-commanded ship.

I recall Kotori's fast rise in rank got a few people to think of her as the 'apple-polisher'. Not that I want to give Reika more trouble than she'll already have, this sort of consideration and perhaps even tension (even if it's held in) could add dept to your PCs if you choose to go that way.

...

Also, you guys don't have a single technician. Not one. Ow. Strong lean toward 'soldier' too. *headscratches* Looks like I'll have to adapt to get things a bit more infantry oriented ( >_> I thought that was Doshii's plot...)

Mm. Well, I'll ask: at this point, are any of you interested in considering minor alternate roles?

Tom and Aendri might already have an idea, but I'll explain: back on Miharu, Blas - whom played Nyton Claymere - pushed toward taking control of more than just his character. There was this prisoner rescue we did on our 3rd mission, and from the prisoners he fleshed out two caretakers and two medics. He started portraying then and they ended up staying on the ship: his to roleplay whenever there was an opening for something interesting to do with them.

If it comes to it, I can create NPCs to fill the roles. That's not a problem. But if your soldier is on standby, you might enjoy being able to RP one of the techs whom actually has more stuff to do. And if there's more than one person whom has a "spare tech", then they can mess around together. This could work for nurses and caretakers too.

It's up to you guys, but I've seen some of my players have fun handling more than just their own PCs. So the offer's on the table while the plot is still in its formative stage.

I wouldn't mind lending a hand by controlling one or two npcs to help fill some gaps and keep the rp interesting. :D I'll give some thought to the creation of an npc that can be used.

Unfortunately SAINT operatives and infantry don't have much to do aboard ships during space battles -- most of the time on the Eucharis, such characters end up helping out technicians in a damage control capacity... if that happens here, it would probably be a good idea at some point for our characters to cross-train so that they can more proficiently help out in maintenance and repair. Personally, I think some basic maintenance and repair skills should be standard for any crewmember on a ship -- as much as every star army soldier has basic fighting skills.

Reika herself could probably extend her existing technology operation hacking skills and her communication skills by adding some additional training with starship sensors so that she could temp in the bridge operations / communications and electronic warfare specialist role, assuming no one creates a dedicated player character for it.

It'd be really easy to place Saku in a communications / translator role not unlike Nyota Uhura in Star Trek, due to her love of languages and familiarity with several cultures.

That'd give her something to do that didn't involve SAINTLY things necessarily.

As for controlling a separate NPC, I'd have no problem with it. I did a lot of engineering, though, and I'm not very good at it. I can fit in a pinch, but I'd prefer to experiment with something new.

The only PCs not yet posted for are Konoka, SSharp's and Aendri's. I'm still waiting for them. Feel free to interact with one and another in the meantime. Though we're now tuesday - past the deadline I've allowed - so I'll likely narrate "after a few other people came in, the meeting started".

Speaking of meetings...

It's hard to not turn a briefing into a huge information dump. I did this at least four times on Miharu, and it felt hard to make those either interesting and interactive without being tedious or overwhelming.

So, I'm asking you guys: would you have any recommendation as to the delivery? Aendri and Tom have both lived through my briefing, so, your impressions on how that went on Miharu so that I might adjust would also be welcome.

Briefings are meant to be information dumps as far as I know.

They are an introduction to the task at hand; not a performance.

That said, you're welcome to do a briefing with caged tigers and magic. It would capture attention, to be sure.
