Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Kai nodded at Yuzuki, considering a moment. "If it's just going to be a quick cut, we might as well go all-out and just cut it short. Otherwise it's going to bug me in the helmet." The Yamataian began to play with his hair, considering the decision. It was such a trivial thing, considering what lay before them. If he died, the change would likely be lost. He figured, it was something that could be telling for him.

"Let's get in line, then give me that cut." Kai said finally, heading out of the wardroom at last.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Nao returned the short, small smile to Yuzuki before withdrawing from the two, quickly eying Kai top to toe as she went to the ST line to address the engineers. "Hey girls; meet you all in main control in a few minutes. Freeman-Juni's going to talk to us before it all starts. See you there." Nao worked hard to concentrate on that one pleasant moment, and make it last for as long as she could, because it was the happy things that counted; Nao decided she simply didn't have time to pout anymore.

Nao made her rounds, quickly gathering up all the sprites. There was Sanri, and then Ozuno, Cho and Haya. Then Hisa, Etsu and Suzume. 'There's so many of us to get!' she thought. She found Rei, Tori and Junko, who died a bit back. Nao got everyone together, and found Rin last. "Hey Rin. you heard right? We're meeting below at main control."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Tom sighed.

"I'm sorry, Heisho. It's not that. Could you give me some time alone down here? Maybe 5 minutes?"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Oh, now c'mon!" Asher held out his arms, in a fit of mock-offense, as Masako walked off to the med-bay. He shook his head dismissively as he headed off into the Armor Bay.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Ichigo peered back silently at Tom for a long moment before nodding. "Yes, Juni. I'll keep the others out until then."

After a few barked orders to the technician sprites whom had already come down into the subdeck, Ichigo lead them all out.

"Five minutes!" The Heisho told him as a parting shot, before the doors closed behind her.

Tom was alone. Alone with the machines he had cared for ever since the Battle of Taiie.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Shortly after Asher walked into the armor bay, sandy haired Mara ran in. At the sight of Asher, the sprite grinned widely. "Westwood-san! I couldn't believe it when I heard you were around again, so I just had to come look and see!"

Mara promptly pounced on the Malifarian and hugged him, laughing as she did so.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Tsuya sat on a convenient box in the armor bay, about to speak to Asher before a sprite leapt on him. She thought better of it, then, and pressed her lips quietly together.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Well you cannot blame me for asking. How was I to know if this was the opportune time or not?" Nyton replied with a shrug. He then sighed and became rather serious. "Kotori if .....can Signaler Kotori beat Eve's psionic ability? The data core implied so but I wonder if she can. I also noted something about Eve having standby clones ready to respawn if she dies. What can we do about those?" he then asked.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Asher looked around at the empty Armor Bay with a bit of a sigh. The Yamataian wanted to suit up now. He almost thought of just going to an our-of-place armor and hopping in until...

"Westwood-san! I couldn't believe it so I just had to come look and see!"

With barely enough time to turn around, Asher caught the sprite with both arms wrapped around her, nearly being sent backwards. It was Mara, the sprite who he had flown with on the Meng Po so long ago. Out of all the sprites, he had respected Mara the most for what she went through during that time. She had also consoled him afterward, when he had blamed himself for her injury.

"Mara!" Asher yelped, laughing with her and regaining his balance. To her, this was a reunion. To him, it was a strange way of meeting someone you had spoke to the day before. Though, he couldn't help but be infected by her joy, even it was somewhat a lie.

"Ey!" He started, trying to work up a 'correct' response. "How ya been? You do a lotta' winnin' while I was gone?"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Mara pulled back to get a better look at him and made a grimace to his question. "Ugh. You wouldn't know the half of it."

"We had a ground mission on this ugly rock named Bowhordia, where we stormed into a mountain-embedded supply base of the enemy. They had these new android machines that were robot-nekos and robot-mishhu to guard the place, so we had our hands full dealing with the cannon fodder - the real point was capturing thier computer hard drive to get some intel."

"About halfway down, one nekomachina used this bazooka-sized beam cannon and blasted both my legs off, again! I had to sit the rest of the mission out after that." Mara huffed. "I swear - I don't know what the universe has against my legs."

The sprite seemed unwilling to linger further on the subject. "I'll be in infantry too, today. Maybe we'll be in the same team again, just like back in Tsuyosa!"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Hm? There is?" Rin blinked. "Oh, okay, thank you Nao." Well that answered her question. The little mental note folded itself up and neatly put itself and poofed out of her mind as the lavender-haired sprite took a step forward as the line advanced.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Mara had Asher's rapt attention for the entire explanation, it almost made him angry that he missed such a chance to fight on a hellhole planet. It had always been a dream of his to slog through some crappy battlefield, an do so with victorious consequence. He hoped his original copy was happy, doing whatever it was he was doing, missing all the real combat.

"About halfway down, one nekomachina used this bazooka-sized beam cannon and blasted both my legs off, again! I had to sit the rest of the mission out after that." Mara huffed. "I swear - I don't know what the universe has against my legs."

Asher winced at the mention of Mara's legs being blown off, again. He himself didn't quite understand what anyone would have against Mara's legs, they were nice, to his standards. Even though, for some strange reason, he didn't think of them that much.

"Y'know, I hope we are, I wouldn't mind havin' someone like you watchin' my back." Asher replied, "Iss' comfortin' to have experience on y'side."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Nao stoically returned the acknowledgment with a "Mm-hmm." and a nod before counting the people who needed suits in line, and departing. The sprite descended down the elevator, and quickly found the environment suits mentioned earlier, and slipped into hers. Nao then quickly gathered up some more of the AMES and diligently prepped them for use by the rest of section two. 'At this rate, we'll need them, right?' She finished, and sat down in the cargo bay, waiting for the meeting to begin. Again, Nao felt a pang of loneliness, recollecting all the couples she saw on the way down. 'I guess it's time to get all the things in order. Like a last will or something. I bet Yuzuki and Kai are together right now too.' She gave herself a twisted smile, and in that empty room, Nao wanted to cry.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Mara rewarded Asher with a wink. "We've come a long way to be here. We're to attack Eve's final stronghold, a starbase-sized dimensional gateway that she means to use to further her evil ends. Wherever your alter-ego is, it's not as important as this."

She grinned. "Who knows, if we get to stop Eve's plans here, it might save him from whatever ugliness Eve had cooking. Eve is Taisho Yui's arch-enemy so whatever she's been taking a decade to amass resources to build that 'True Nekovalkyrja Empire' I've heard she ranted about has to be big... and we're the only ones that can stop her."

* * *

Nyton got a longer response this time, even though he hardly had to wait a second for it.

Kotori said:
If a Signaler cannot beat Eve, then the battle is lost from the moment a psionic opponent with a ship-grade amplifier comes into the fray, and that's exactly what the Dominion is. So, you better hope so.

Personally, I take comfort in that Amaya seems certain she will. After all, they meant for her to be able to kill Melisson. I doubt they'd have had spent so much effort into making NH-29 Signalers around Taisa Hanako if they wouldn't have been worth it. They probably wouldn't have hired an assassin to get rid of her if she was considered an impotent counter either.

As for Eve's extra bodies, well, I suppose it works that same way as the NH-23 body. On death, the consciousness of Eve in the enemy's private PANTHEON system will be transmitted and then will seek out the nearest allied medical facility in order to initiate a respawning process.

In the data you read, Amaya held the concern that if Eve's body expires inside the Signaler's effective range that the Signaler could cancel out any transmission in a fashion I suppose would be similar to how the Signaler could wreck the ST device when it tried to get a recording from her.

If this is the case, then Eve's consciousness could only survive in the PANTHEON nodes the enemy has in the Blue Rift. Destroy any local point where she can respawn and if you defeat her in battle you will at least take her out of the immediate battle.

Actually, I doubt she has the range to transmit back to settled space in order to reconstitute herself... and that's assuming the data transmission would survive prolonged passage through the Blue Rift.

I'm not sure mine would even survive prolonged exposure through the irregular space of the Expanse... and if you think about if, that refit Takumi had took the fold drive out - so she'll have no quantum communication available. The twin CFS nacelles give her subspace FTL communication but she still spends several hours transiting through unstable space. Laser communication would be even worse: the beam would take decades to leave the expanse and the anomaly might deviate it so that it'll actually never end up reaching its destination (again assuming the data is still intact by then, which is very unlikely).

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"I know, right? Iss' gunna' be excitin'!" Asher said with glee, bouncing up and down in excitement. The Hei could only feel joy as she restated what they were up against, and could only hope to get to the fighting faster. Yet, it hit him a few seconds late that she seemed to mention, 'Alter-Ego'.

"Wait a second..." Asher stopped for a moment, "You know about my... uh... 'condition'?"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Mara gave a little nod. "I'm the sprite avatar of Miharu's main computer, so, I don't miss much."

Every time Miyoko talked to Sanjuro, she felt like he pushed her just to the point where she wanted to do horrible, horrible things to him... and yet, without fail, the next time she talked to him, he'd manage to push her a bit closer to that line without going over it. She was walking busily now to keep pace with him, and it probably looked slightly ridiculous to any third parties that the pair passed on their way down the hall. "After breaking into military-grade encryption and then spending days reading the contents for anything that could even marginally help us, I think one would be hard-pressed to say I've been relaxed recently," she replied, a bit of a bite to her own voice.

In her mind, at least, Sanjuro was learning about creative and highly illegal uses of a cheese grater as a torture device.

"One would think," Sanjuro spoke in a hurried breath, the act of speed-walking at break-neck speeds taking a small toll on his fatigue. "That the severity of this upcoming mission would require the full attention of the crew, and not their lax attitudes."

The two raced past the corner leading towards the forward medical facility, no doubt eliciting a handful of confused stairs from those prompt enough to beat the Chief Medical Officer to the punch. Upon reaching the door Sanjuro paused for but a moment, his chest heaving slightly as he calmly attempted to catch his breath. Despite the impromptu competition, it would appear Sanjuro was fully intent on letting Miyoko enter first.

"Eh, I guess thass' anotha' comfort." Asher smiled, and then went on. "Y'know, Claymere tol' me that I wass' uh... Illegal... You woudn't happen t'know what that means f'me post-mission, would ya'?"

Kai JP said:
Their wait was not very long. Medical was very efficient; the sense of urgency, the feeling of tautness, pervaded the entire ship from bow to stern. Yuzuki knew that, in fifteen to twenty minutes, she would have to be downstairs and dressed out with the rest of the engineers, but... for some reason she knew this was something that she needed to do. It was stupid, sure, but necessary.

When the two of them finally settled down in one of the recreation rooms, Yuzuki with scissors in hand and Kai cross-legged on the floor, it was kind of like the two of them were inside a bubble, with the world going by on the outside. There was about a half an hour on the clock, still; Yuzuki grabbed some of Kai's hair, smoothing it down, running her fingers through it.

"You don't cut this yourself," she observed, "Who usually does?"

"Well, No-one, since basic. it's been growing for almost a year now. I think I actually did cut it myself about then, but it was horrible. scrounging around a Nebula can get pretty darn boring." Kai felt his hair again, putting some of it behind his ears to keep it out of his face. Yuzuki took some of it from him then, their hands brushing together again, however briefly.

"You can't really want it all off?"

Kai tensed slightly. Again, their hands had touched. In all honesty, he hadn't even touched anyone other than one of the medics in a long time and he missed the physical feeling of another person. "Yup. at least half of it, but don't make it ragged. I'd rather not die ugly."

It was an attempt at a joke; whether or not it would be humorous the Yamataian did not know. Yuzuki's reaction told him enough; she offered a fleeting smile, slightly forced, and said "Well, there's that. I'll try."

She picked up a comb and, separating the unkempt mane with it, began to snip away some of the straw-colored mess. A few locks tumbled down onto the deck carpeting, the little hairs from them speckling Kai's shoulders.

The Yamataian tingled a bit as he imagined he could feel the hairs separating from his body. It was an odd thing, cutting your hair. If you weren't used to it, it could be an interesting experience. "Just.. Don't cut too much." he said, somewhat nervously, straightening his back and forcing himself to sit still while Yuzuki adjusted to match his new posture.

"You said you wanted it shorter," she said, pausing and taking her hands - and the scissors - away from his head, "You never really said how short you wanted it. So, I'm just taking it down a few inches. Um, you still... want to be able to tie it back? Right?"

"I... Yeah... No. No. I want it short. Like, three, maybe four inches. can you do that?" he finally said, forcing himself to make a decision. He wanted it different. Just as this mission was different, and he would be different at the end. "I feel like getting a haircut signifies something, you know?" Kai said, feeling at the spot where Yuzuki had cut it, before taking his hands back down. A knuckle brushed past a knee in the movement.

"You'll look a little silly," Yuzuki warned, putting her hands in her lap, "And I think I know what you mean. If you let me cut it, like I think you might like, even if you don't like it, it will grow back."

"That is a good thing about Hair." the Infantryman conceded. "Have at it, then." the newly-appointed Heisho allowed, Looking back at Yuzuki and winking before sitting forward and straight again. He would have touched her hand, but the way they were sitting would have made the motion awkward. The nekovalkyrja started clipping away at his hair again almost immediately, anyway.

After about a minute where the only sound in the room was the shears snip-snipping away, Yuzuki said, "Thanks for letting me do this. I don't think I could have managed to keep looking like I know what I'm doing, if I'd had to go back downstairs right now. I'm no good at waiting around and looking important."

Kai paused after she spoken, having been lost in the feel of his hair being cut. "Uhh. No problem, I guess. It needed doing sometime or another, and now is as good a time as any." the Yamataian assured, smiling a bit, despite the fact that the sprite wouldn't see it.

"You shouldn't have to try to look important if you don't want to. Just be you, you know? those who are going to notice you will, and the ones that do notice are probably the ones you'd rather have noticing."

Again, Yuzuki stopped cutting his hair. This time, she just didn't say anything. When Kai turned around, Yuzuki dropped her eyes away, and her voice followed, soft and quiet. "I'm sorry, that's just it. I'm terrified. But, I can't let anyone know, because if I'm scared, they'll be scared, too."

"I'll let you in on a little secret." Kai said, softly, as he turned himself all the way around to face properly at the Sprite. "I'm scared, too. Deep down, there's a part of me that's certain I'm going to die at any moment. I know everyone feels it, on this ship. Nyton, Masako, Tom, every one of the sprites; Even Kotori-Taisa. Sometimes, it's best to let someone know you're scared. that's how they know they can help." The Yamataian placed his own hand on the Sprite's and squeezed it a little.

At that, Yuzuki looked up.

"Kai," she said, "I'm scared."

Kai gripped the Sprite's hand a little more firmly, and gently pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her in a gentle hug. "Don't be scared. Everyone is here for you, Yuzuki. The whole ship, the ones who've been here, and the ones who just came. They are all here for you. And you're here for them. Don't let anyone down, especially not yourself. Okay?"

She nodded in reply. A few awkward moments passed before she took the leap, and leaned forward, putting her head on Kai's shoulder. She had only ever done this once before, and she had been close to a complete breakdown at the time; now, fully in possession of herself, she found the contact comforting.

Kai found the contact comforting as well. He took slow breaths, so as not to bother Yuzuki, and squeezed her a little when she unfolded her legs and settled sideways into his lap, shifting her forehead to rest on his neck, instead. It had happened rather suddenly, and Kai was surprised at his own daring, but he knew that the orange-haired sprite needed comfort, and he was there to give it. Her own movements had only added to the situation, but Kai didn't question it, either.

The distractions were now gone from Kai's mind, his little games to keep himself occupied so he didn't worry about what was probably going to happen, the thing that made him always seem so relaxed. Right now, he was focused on Yuzuki. The way she felt, the way she smelled, the weight of her on his lap, the warmth from her body. Kai forgot about the Mission completely.

The haircut could wait.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Nyton breathed a slight sigh of relief. The thought had been weighing upon him for some time in a nagging sort of way. "That is good to know. I had genuine fears concerning the possibility that Eve may find some way to respawn herself elsewhere. I would hate to think that all of our effort would be a stop gap." he said, allowing himself a smile.

"Kotori, after we have won this battle, what will you do?"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Kotori said:
I'll become Evil Overlord Kotori of the Second Draconian Fleet and I'll conquer the universe with the aid of my generals, whom I will name after the colors of the rainbow. You'll be the Purple General, leading my invasion into Nepleslia and making its people bow down to my will.

...

Seriously, there are some things you just shouldn't ask.

Now, don't you have better things to do other than standing in front of a big metal box speaking to a floating text window... like, say, working on the bridge?
