What the fuck does he think I do? Eat, breathe, and live for medicine? Miyoko's rage was now only being restrained by a series of mental images of herself throttling the medic. She wasn't used to having her competence questioned, particularly by somebody who knew what they were talking about... and it thoroughly pissed her off. As far as she was concerned, she was damn well busy enough without having to dedicate her little free time to studying a subject that wasn't even her main skill area.

"With all due respect, being a medic isn't my only--or even my primary--duty. I did take a course in being a medical assistant over the break, as well as one in stellar astrophysics and a Kessaku certification course. I am a sensor specialist; during the last mission, I was acting as a medic, science specialist, power armor pilot, and doing some intelligence work to boot. I will aid you with what duties in the medical lab I can, but the focus of my studies has been--and will be--furthering my abilities as a science officer, not a medic."

Sora leaned into Serizawa's kiss glad for the momentary diversion. "I'd love too be able to pause time for even just a short while," she commented softly as she gave the scientist another loving squeeze. "But we're probably about to get flooded with crew members and work. We'll just have to make up for lost time after dinner."

She looked up into Ichi's cyan eyes and winked with a playful smile. "We have to see how the new environment effects our experiments, after all. And I'm sure that I might need a through examination from you to make sure you don't get rusty on her abilities as a medic."

Yukari came through the door of the main medical lab on the Miharu and, without too much kindness, interrupted. She was not feeling patient, and seeing Sora and Ichi being vaguely intimate did not help her mood any. She wanted to start cooking; it would let her think freely.

"Excuse me, Ashitaka-Heisho, but I require Saito-Hei's presence with me. Please allow her to come with me for a few moments?"

Sora reluctantly let go of Ichi and bowed deeply to Yukari with a fierce blush on her cheeks. "Please excuse us, ma'am." She straightened again with a quick glance at Serizawa before she moved to one of the work stations, where she pulled out her data pad and started familiarizing herself with crew medical records.

Miyoko's distaste for the conversation was well-restrained, but Sanjuro couldn't help but catch a small taste of it as he watched the emotion play across her face as she spoke. Sanjuro leaned back a bit, removing his scrutinizing expression and returned back to one slightly on the less-aggressive side as he clasped his hands together near the small of his back.

"I...only meant to make an example. I did not mean to offend-" Sanjuro would be cut off, however, upon Yukari's arrival. He quickly exchanged glances between the two before giving the sensors specialist a short bow of courtesy. "Yes, Suzuka-Shoi. Saito-Hei."

With that, Sanjuro turned and started towards the shelves to inspect what damages he would have to correct before the first sets of crew members would arrive.

As Sanjuro turned away from her, Miyoko took a deep, calming breath before doing anything else. She returned his bow very minimally, then turned to address Yukari. "I apologize for the delay, Shosa. Would you like to head somewhere private for this conversation?"

"Ah is that so Kai-kun? Well, maybe you can tell me how that went?"
The neko smiled back, her steps bringing her closer to her destination.

"Ashitaka-Heisho?" Sora called from her work station as she finally noticed that Sanjuro was indeed in the medical bay and ready for work. She tucked her data pad back into the pouch on her belt as she appraised the man carefully.

"We should be getting crew in for basic routine physicals; psychological evaluations and ST back-ups shortly. I would like for you to assist me in conducting the evals and physicals by splitting the crew into groups so it will go much faster than 1 of us simply assisting the other. I would like for Serizawa to conduct the ST back-ups once we clear the crew to get them, again to maximize our efficiency, he is quite practiced at doing ST back-ups. I trust that you are familiar with the basic physical work-up and psych eval procedures?" She smiled warmly, she was certain the man was knowledgeable enough about his profession and would indeed be more than capable of functioning on his own. She thought he looked a little stiff and would need to be worked with on his bedside manner at some point.

In engineering, Ichigo turned and headed off to the central power monitoring station. "Hai! I shouldn't be long."

Nimura, now helmeted, gave Tom a nod in acknowledgement and slipped into the maintenance passageway. She didn't have to crawl on her knees so much as push her way in with her anti-gravity abilities, which spared her from having her kneecaps suffer from the gridded flooring.

"Alright, I've shunted power to the starboard capacitors," Ichigo sent telepathically to Tom and Nimura. "Port systems have been shut down. They weren't charged, but there might be leftover static from the stress test earlier. Be careful."

"Tom told me something similar back at the Kyoto War College," Kotori confided to Nyton. "Despite some of us being there at the same time and even sharing classes, all the others had a hard time getting hold of me and Freeman-Juni grouched that I was working to hard: while students there usually settle for morning and afternoon classes to complete their officer training program, I took evening and weekend classes so to sponge everything I could out of my leave time; the little free time leftover was devoted to keeping up with the extra assignments. Tom must have thought I was being a cold fish-"

Kotori's communicator beeped, interrupting her. The black-haired nekovalkyrja fished it out and opened it. "Well, speak of the devil." She began thumbing a reply. "I didn't really get much in the way of vacation time except the trip to Hanako's World with Yukisato-san and a visit to the Elfin Princess to visit my older sister and meet with my niece."

Kotori finished drafting the message and sent it to Tom:

Thank you, Freeman-Juni.

Miharu should remain at non-military power until tomorrow. As long as the medical staff can carry out their duties, you have my blessings to take any liberties with our ship's power management. I trust in your expertise.

Sanjuro turned and immediately gave a deep bow as Sora addressed him, turning away from the shelves as he did. In the few moments he was able to glance through the condition of the pharmaceuticals there, he had already spotted a number of misplaced items...but he quickly pushed this out of his mind as he formed a reply to Sora's question.

"Yes, Ketsurui-Kohosei, I have much experience in psychological evaluation and physical procedures, as required by the YE30 Medical Officer protocols. How do you want to divide the crew, if I may ask?"

Yukari did not return Sanjuro's bow before looking at Miyoko. He had called her a Shoi, which she clearly was not, but besides that, he seemed too preoccupied to correct.

"We will go to the medlab on the Hoshi. We must finish this step quickly; there is no way to know whether we will have PANTHEON access again."

The Shosa led Miyoko down the corridor and back onto the Hoshi, and as soon as they arrived inside the smaller medlab and the door shut behind them, Yukari started to softly bark commands.

"Hoshi, open a secure channel with the Empress' Palace's central communication station, please. Use my identifier, and route the request past other waiting communication. Do not use Miharu's help; use SAINT protocol Beta Rho Seven Twenty-Five Dash Six to highlight the communique. Open image panel upon completion."

Hoshi acknowledged the orders and began routing the message.

"Forgive my rush, Saito-Hei. I came to a conclusion during our mission briefing when Kotori mentioned psionic defense. I believe SAINT has done nothing to protect us or this ship — the 'equipment' is the Taisa. How I do not know, but I hope the communication I am about to raise will allow us to begin discerning that." Yukari did not even look at Miyoko as she spoke; her eyes were settled squarely on the space she expected a panel to show up at.

"If there were a more even number of males and females, it would've been divided that way but we'll just have to go by the method of whomever walks in the door first and then alternate the workload that way," Sora replied with a smile.

"It's how I've done it in the past and is seems to more efficient than waiting for an appropriate number to form up and then divide that way. If you had any suggestions in regards to this, I am more than willing to listen to what ideas you might have."

Yoroko fell in behind Kai and Yuril. It sure has been a while since we have been together... Yoroko thought to herself. The time we spent at Ft.Ready seems so distant now. As they walked Yoroko listened to Kai and Yuril talk to each other.

In an attempt to wake him up slightly, Takuma took a detour to the bathroom and splashed some cold water on his face. Satisfied, he walked the rest of the way to the sub-deck.

Upon arrival, he noted that Tom and the sprites were putting on environment suits. "Anything you need my help with, Freeman-Juni?"

Nyton nodded as he heard Kotori speak of her school and vacation. "Yes, not really much at all. But those are the sacrifices we make to advance ourselves." he remarked. "At least you got some time to see family. I enjoyed spending much time with my own while I recuperated from my cybernetic repairs and modifications. I got to see my baby sister for the first time this trip. I had never worked hands on with a baby before; changing diapers, feeding, burping, that sort of thing. Not easy at first but I learned eventually." he said with a bit of humor and a chuckle. "Oh speaking of family, what about your mother, Kosuka-san? Whatever became of her? You ever speak to her since the Sakura?"

Kotori frowned and shook her head. "No, I haven't since." She seemed a little disturbed by the question. "Mother should be at the Empress' Palace, serving with other samurai as one of the palace guards that aren't there for show."

Miyoko had to admit that the idea Yukari had proposed made sense, but she was rather taken aback at what it meant. That Kotori had been given such capabilities without her knowledge raised plenty of questions about just what SAINT had had in mind. Her mind still puzzling over this mystery, she settled back quietly to watch the communication.

Kai thought back, it having been nearly a year since he had switched bodies. "Well... it hurts a little, but not enough to be dangerous... Some people get headaches afterward, or maybe everyone does.. I dunno, it's been a while. I vaguely remember some familiar blur while it was happening though." he shrugged, looking at her before continuing "Anyway, it shouldn't be all that bad, really, Yuril-Chan" he said giving a comforting smile.

"I will follow you're suggested method, Ketsurui-Kohosei. No doubt you have had more training and experience than me in this field; I will try to keep up with you and learn what I can from your guidance," Sanjuro spoke, bowing again shortly as he finised.

Kosuka was inside a quiet part of the Empress' Palace — a part devoted to the dead. Small ihai were in front of her, on shallow shelves that rose far above her head, nearly 30 meters at the top with at least 60 dark wooden shelves from top to bottom. The ihai were made of dark lacquered wood, mostly ash and oak from the Trisylvania forest within the Melanchol prefecture. The names of dead samurai, many of them from the Elysian war, were inscribed on the tablets, one name for each, written in kanji and painted white, gold, red or green.

The room, tall and open save for the shelves on the sides, seemed filled with cool light from the open doors at either end. No one but Kosuka sat below the shelves, on the plush, 20-meter-wide red strip of carpet cut the grey-white marble room in two. She sat with beads in her hands, eyes closed and incense before one of the ihai closer to her, just a couple meters or so up from the floor. The air carried the chill of the late night from the open skylight cut out of the roof.

A young Neko, wearing all-white samurai robes, stopped at the portal to the room. She gave a deep bow, then entered, sans sandals. She had only a bokuto.

"Excuse me, Kosuka-dono," she said in Yamataian after rushing to her knees and bowing. "A conference request has come for you. It is from a member of SAINT."

Kosuka did not open her eyes. "Telepathy, Mizuki-san," she chastised gently.

"Y-yes, Kosuka-dono."

"What was the name?"

"Suzuka, Yukari."

" ... " Kosuka slowly rose to her feet, bowed to the ihai, then left the room, the Neko following her from a polite distance.

"Route the channel to my room. I will speak with her there." The Neko bowed, and the two parted ways. Kosuka's brow furrowed as the thought of speaking to Suzuka germinated in her mind. What would that woman want ... ? Word of Kotori's death?
