Actually, I've considered the possibility of allowing alternative primary colors (currently always blue or blue/gray) for the Star Army uniforms, particularly a sort of sandy brown color. I can post an example when I get home.

Something different. Blue is sort of, well, flat and the current version of the uniforms are pretty old. They could do with a makeover. I, for one, can't tell how you're supposed to put those things on. You know I've been itching to give them a redesign for a while now.
They could be:
- Tropical (lightweight) duty uniform
- "Planetside" duty uniform
- Issued to crews in recognition of something that signifies them as "elite"
Or many other things. It's easy to have a different uniform for some seemingly silly reason, just take the US Navy for example.
I dun know I would be rather suspicious ow putting on a red uniform in any space fantasy. Well except the good old startrek movies. evryone had red jackets.
And raz is right about there being many reasons for a new uniform. But the brown and white uniform really just looks like a recolor of the regular uniform. Doesn't really seem special at all.
Pavone wants brown, green, tan, dark blue, lime or white clothes under his tattered red chest panel!
Oh, also, what are the chest panels made of? Plastic or Cloth or similar?
I find the chest panels are quite trivial, appart from just having an easy look at where someone's rung in the ladder is, without even refering to the pin.
Elisa: "Everyone knows pilots wearing red are three times faster than a normal pilot."
Miles: "Unless you're Nepleslian, in which case you just die more easily."
Elisa: "I lost a lot of good friends that way."
All I'm saying is, I approve of alternate uniform color schemes - sparingly.
I was thinking perhaps something like the uniforms from the classic space opera MACROSS; most UN Spacy uniforms were mostly the same (blue pants, white jacket), but bridge crews and squad leaders, as well as special positions sometimes had different colorations (green for Claudia, gray for Roy, sky blue for bridge bunnies, etc.)
Basically, PCs would have more color options then the average Star Army soldier.
