Uniform Updates for the Star Army of Yamatai

Chisuga: You got smote by the word filter, again.
Kokuten: They certainly do go faster! And yes, it's spelt Homage, well spotted. Oh, patterns sound like a good plan to me.
Yangfan: Thanks for the info.
FM: Sparringly, eh? If alternate uniform is only for the High-ups and top brass, then I sense favouritism which could tear units appart.
Wes: I'm not sure how to react, I havent seen MACROSS before.

Elisa: That's only because you aren't any good. Real soldiers wear Zeon uniforms. I mean, red.

...come on. Just look at Elisa. Don't you think that she could pull off a Zeon ace uniform? Pilot a three-times-faster Zaku with a custom color scheme? Take out the enemy's new prototype Gundam, with three beam sabers, a bigger gun, and a pilot who goes all out against impossible odds?

I was thinking perhaps something like the uniforms from the classic space opera MACROSS; most UN Spacy uniforms were mostly the same (blue pants, white jacket), but bridge crews and squad leaders, as well as special positions sometimes had different colorations (green for Claudia, gray for Roy, sky blue for bridge bunnies, etc.)

Basically, PCs would have more color options then the average Star Army soldier.

Give us some examples of the Macross stuff?

Three pilots, same sqaudron. The one with red piping's a main character.

A scientist.

Chief of Operations (the only one in green)

Air Group Commander (the only one in gray)

Ahhh, gotcha gotcha gotcha. Okay ... Hm. I dunno ... they're not very, y'know, gritty or militaristic. But that's just me.

What takes precedence in Star Army of Yamatai uniform colors, the Grey and Red of Officer and Enlisted, or the specific uniform colors of specific types of soldiers? When does one show Medical Green, Combat Arms Midnight Blue or Sprite Orange? I assume that Command White likely overrides other colors. Do the Grey and Red only apply for positions that lack a specific position based color?

That was what had me curious. After looking there and not being sure, I looked through listed uniforms for characters of different ranks and positions, but it didn't seem compeletely uniform how such was decided, or I at least didn't see the logic behind it. Mostly I'm looking to make sure Inoue Tio's combat arms colored uniform is correct, instead of enlisted red, or to switch it if I wrote such incorrectly.

Medical green and the midnight blue take precedence over the red ONLY if the character specifically is in that occupation.

Technically, we shouldn't be seeing midnight blue anymore. It was phased out; only a couple characters still have the blue.

Any medical/science personnel have green, regardless of rank.

I don't remember seeing this. :|

If it's true, then we should change the wiki.

Gray is for bridge officers only, as I recall.

*rubs head* Yeah, I thought we decided to nix the midnight blue when we upgraded the uniforms ... maybe not. Wes knows for sure.

Red would be used for tech sentries, engineers, caretakers, etc but far as I know, the blue is still used for all combat and armour pilot positions. a lot of (if not all) the recent artwork we've got supports that.

The midnight blue is still in use, but it's for combat arms personnel only. That is: infantry and power armor pilots who are carried by a starship as "marines" but who are NOT part of the ship's operating crew. They're generally considered a lot more expendable.

For the above reasons, it doesn't make a lot of sense to have the blue-shirts spread out on various plot ships. If there's a PVP war, all combat arms PCs will probably receive orders to combine into a single unit that will do a planetary invasion or something.

Gray is for bridge officers only, as I recall.
Gray is the default for all officers, including warrant officers. If the officer is not a ship commander (white) or doctor (green), then he'll be wearing gray.

1. The Star Army Uniforms wiki article says that the Star Army Formal Whites are obsolete, and thus no longer used. Since this is the case, what do Star Army personnel wear on occasions that would warrant some pomp and circumstance? Do they simply wear their ribbons on their standard uniforms?

2. The YE 31 Uniform Colors list specific occupations for the color used. White is now reserved for Starship Captains and First Officers. What would a SAINT, Engineering, etc. officer in command of a unit, such as a specific command or base, but not a starship wear? Would they simply wear the color of their occupation, or would they wear white? Also, what about Shosho who are in command of a division, but not a starship? What about non-ship based communications/sensors officers whose occupations fall under "Starship Operations"?

I realize this second question may seem a little silly, since the previous iteration of the panel color system mostly carried over, and white is still probably "command" while gray is "generic officer." The addition of the specific occupations made me want to ask, though.

At this time, there is no uniform for medals to be worn on. The newer uniforms (with the centered ranks) aren't supposed to have medals on them ever. If we create a new formal uniform, medals can be worn on it. I was thinking something inspired by Civil War or even colonial-era uniforms, with lots of shiny buttons.

If the person is in command, usually their occupation will be command regardless of the unit type, so usually they also wear white. If an engineer is promoted to First Officer, then First Officer would be his new occupation, and the colors would switch.

Base commanders and operations staff wear the same colors as their starship equivalents.

All of the colors are now based on occupation; there are no general officer or enlisted colors anymore.
