Khasidel's Art Dump

I know I haven't been here for three months, thus I am supposed to be unable to contribute new races or stuff like that to the site yet. This first image is drawn in anticipation for the time when I will be allowed, further down the line (assuming I am still around :) ). Until then, I'm just going to continue drawing more images and fleshing out the civilizations background and other important details so that it might eventually be found acceptable when I present it for the approval / refusal process.

I've got to have something to do between posts ;) .

This ones an example of a Vasurah officer, tentatively named Aria.

Haven't decided entirely on the specifics of the races physiology yet; I'm mainly thinking along a mixture of reptilian-mammalian or amphibian-mammalian traits. The glowing spots are due to natural bio-luminescence (like firefly's); gotta love glowing in the dark. :D

This image is also an example of the standard ship-board uniform, with the base color indicating division (ie command, engineering, security etc), and the secondary color indicating rank. In this case, black = command and gold = captain equivalent rank. Though this is subject to change further down the line.

The panels also glow in the dark, and the forearm pieces are supposed to support holographic ship interfaces.

On a side note, this took about a whole day for me to draw because I suck at drawing by hand and I don't own the proper tools... drawing entirely by mouse in photoshop sucks great black hairy $(#*#.

I'll probably add more images to this thread intended for use in the races wiki articles once I get around to drawing them. I'm also refreshing my google sketch-up skills in order to make some good ship and vehicle models.

'nough said for now.

EDIT: Re-uploaded the image with the line-work at 60% opacity to make it easier on the eyes.

I haven't actually done any artwork commissions before -- any artwork I've done for others has essentially be gifted to them because I felt like drawing it and I had enough free time available. I don't really consider myself good enough to charge money. :D

The problem is I only get two days off a week, and drawing characters for me is fairly time consuming as I have to do it entirely by mouse in photoshop *shudder* -- I can't draw by hand worth a damn . It takes the better part of a whole day or even most of both my days off to draw and color in a single character.

:D Completely redrew my first character Tachihara Reika -- it's looking much better, and I can actually draw characters consistently now without them all looking like steroid addicts -- though it seems to help drawing them in the duty uniforms. For some reason when I try to do the working uniforms, they always come out looking like skin-tight body suits. :?

In order to account for her change in appearance within the RP, it's going to be explained away that she choose to look this way after transferring to one of the new NH-33S bodies.

I should probably update the rest of her character page too, whilst I'm at it.

And yes. I realize she's unbelievably stacked and has a cartoonish figure that would give 'Jessica Rabbit' a run for her money. ;) That's generally the idea. :P

... now I need to go take some headache tablets....

The 1st image below is of course the new version of Reika. The second image is the old one that's getting replaced.

Wait, you do THAT with a mouse?

...

Are you s**tting me?!

I seriously had no idea.

That's above-average for tablet work and leaves mouse-work in the dust.

If anything, its a testamount to your skill. By being limited to the mouse, you've learned to cope and forced yourself to adapt. Its like those legendary stories of swordsmen being right-handed who improve by learning their technique using their left-hand - forcing themselves to understand the subtle nuances everybody else takes for granted in order to exploit them.

I really admire you as an artist. To know you're doing this with a mouse is really just... Wow.

I don't believe in talent so I'm going to say you're supremely skilled.

The day you get a tablet, you'll truly go to the next level.

Actually it isn't really difficult to draw lines by mouse with photoshop's line tool once your familiar with it -- you can make each line an exact thickness, or a varying stroke, and make them take whatever angle or make whatever kind of curve you need. It just takes about 5-10 times as long as for a person drawing by hand so most people work out the details of their drawing as a sketch first, then use the line tool to redraw their sketch neat and tidy --- I just don't have a sketching portion because I can't draw by hand. :D Coloring is fairly easy too, and I've gotten better at doing extra things like making one color blend into others with gradients and adding textures to change the feel of a surface.

I actually do have a tablet -- though its a crappy one that doesn't work very well because you have to keep looking up at the screen to see the results of your writing on the tablet. If I was going to draw with one, I'd have to force myself to buy one of the expensive ones with a computer screen built into the tablet so I could actually see what I'm drawing without having to constantly look up at the computer monitor.

....They're not crappy, I paid £300 for a high-end tablet that works that way and I use it for 3D sculpting and sketching a lot.

I know its difficult but eventually you just sort of stop looking at what's under you and focus on the screen.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have a cinteq (which cost thousands) but I'm happy with my tablet for now. It does everything I really need it to do sans having a screen.

:D A few teasers for a WIP Star Army super-capital ship concept i'm calling 'Project Izanagi' for the time being. Essentially the idea is this ship is a massive fortress-sized warship (and thus would count as a fortress under fleet build-up). Visually, I've given it Homeworld-esque hanger bays and construction facilities along the ventral area. It would have pretty much all the capabilities of a fortress, but be more mobile and geared more towards attacking the enemy than planetary defense.

Apart from a few minor additions and the inclusion of turrets the model is complete -- so far the only weapon the model actually has is the main weapons array.

I really like this.

Redrawing the map of Yamatai I made without all those triangular cut-outs. :D I've also used this version of the map to make a spherical planet image of Yamatai (couldn't do it with the old one). The shape of the continents more closely resembles Wes' original map this time around, but I also added a munch of smaller islands to make it look more realistic.

Still need to make a version with all the city places, labels, yadda yadda... I'll do that tomorrow.

I love it! I'm totally adding it to Yamatai's page.

...what an enthusiastic response.. .

The measurement more-or-less matches up to the distances to and from certain cities given throughout the Yamatai articles. It would give the planet a diameter of approx 10,400 kilometers -- a little smaller than Earth, which is 12,756.32 km. With that size and Yamatai's lower gravity of 0.95 G, the planet would be slightly denser as well.

Let's see -- Lets give Yamatai a diameter of 10411.63 km (0.8162 Eath)

It's stated gravity is 0.95 G...

So that would give it a density roughly 1.165 times that of Earth, or about 6.4308 grams per cubic centimeter.

There's no information available on its star, but let's assume is roughly comparable to Sol -- I'll see if I can't mathematically figure out the rest of the info by its orbital radius...

It would just mean it has a slightly greater content of metal or slightly heavier element per cubic centimeter above that of Earth's average -- a .91 g increase per/cc is fairly insignificant overall and is within believability.

Gravity = Density (In multiples of Earth) x Diameter (In multiples of Earth)

0.95 G = 0.8162 Earth Diameter x 1.165 Earth Density

An Earth-like world could conceivably have a density up to 1.2 times and not be strange -- in an extreme case (like if the planets crust and core were almost a solid chunk of iron) it might go up to 1.4 Earth density.

Yet another alien species idea -- a race of sentient artificial intelligences. This of course would make them slightly similar to the Freespacers -- or at least one of the kinds of Freespacers.

It's my first attempt at a robotic character design -- the image is still a WIP and haven't added the shadowing yet.
