"It's always easy to make another one, if that's what you're asking," Tom said. "But I have to reiterate that Ralteans have been crafting these since the beginning. They are built for wear and tear. Of course, exposure to fire or acid or aether would destroy it, but we really didn't have to worry about those kinds of things back home."

He got a glint in his eye. Emotion was welling up in him.

"I hope to earn enough of Yukari's trust to one day tie our ribbons together. I will work tirelessly towards that goal."

"Don't talk as if she wasn't there," Kotori pointed over Tom's shoulder at the shower stall Yukari occupied. "She's right there."

"WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL THEN!" Tom blurted out as he turned red. "BOY, I love what you've done with these little towels that we get! Yessiree, they're the best I've seen! Miharu, any chance you can get me some of these for my home down in Ralt?"

"If you keep up with these lame evasions and don't get a move on greeting your lovely girlfriend, you might have more to worry about than the plain spare white terrycloth towels I have onboard," Miharu quipped back.

Yukari was about to mention something about the ribbon, which she had tied to her wrist. About how the fibers aren't just plain satin or cloth; she could not remember what the fibers were, but they were treated with a combination of an animal oil, which she could not remember, and tree pitch, which she could not remember.

She was forgetting quite a bit, she thought with a quiet laugh to herself.

Then, her brain's higher functions shut down again. All remaining energy, of which there had been little left, went into getting up and walking out the door, just as Kotori pointed her out.

By the time Tom actually turned to look, she wasn't there anymore. Instead she was starting to look through each and every locker, to see if there was energy in any of them she could use.

She managed to open two before her operating system decided she had better stop moving her arms and use her legs to go out the door. That did not work very well. Yukari's klutzy nature and her lack of object recognition sent her tumbling over a bench and into the tatami mats with a hard thud.

As her arms were shut down, and her position on the ground was difficult, her operating system concluded the unit needed to return to stasis. It did so, and the optical sensors' covers slowly closed. Aural sensors remained online; all others were closed off.

There was little that could be done, however, when those sensors detected the heavy footsteps of a very, very large presence. Echolocation determined it was practically 2 meters tall. It wrapped something around the unit's frame, according to the aural sensors, then picked it up swiftly. It opened the unit's food processing orfice and inserted something. Gyroscopic elements were turned off to conserve energy, but by the movement of the air, the unit's operating system felt the unit turned so it was as if it was standing straight up.

The food processing element registered energy inside of it. Instantly it began to do its job, while more energy was introduced to it.

The dark, jumpsuit-clad frame of Sigurd stepped out into the bathhouse, cradling Yukari like a small child. He had a bottle of red fruit juice in his hand, and he was feeding the juice to her. The parts of her body that he could not hold dangled freely.

"My apologies, Taisa, Freeman-Juni. Miharu alerted me to the Shosa's status, leading me to this position. Her higher functions should return within a few minutes. Please continue with your conversation."

"Thank you Sigurd." Kotori looked glum. "Miharu, what happened?"

"The Shosa decided to do a combat simulation late yesterday night with many safety settings disabled and coerced me into not getting help should she be hurt. She was, collapsed in the VR chamber and only awoke recently. She kept dragging herself along until... well, this happened."

The Taisa sighed. She closed her eyes, pondering things over a moment, and looked to Tom. "Freeman-Juni, Suzuka-Shosa is hereby free from her duties until noon and you are assume your caretaker role and look after her. I empower you with the right to counter any order she would make that you feel would hinder your assigned role. After lunch, I expect to have a functional Executive Officer." She didn't sound very pleased, but still managed a wan smile. "Your bath is over, Juni."

Nyton closed his primary eyes but allowed his 'peripherals' to continue seeing while he listened to Tom and Kotori discuss Raltean courting rituals. Upon hearing Yoroko's greeting he opened his eyes and looked over to her. "Ohayo, Yoroko. Did you sleep well for your first assignment?" he replied in Japanese.

Nyton allowed his attentions to divide while Tom further elaborated on the Raltean love band. It was an interesting cultural phenomenon that repeated itself in almost every society he studied. He was amused when Kotori pointed out to the oblivious Tom that Yukari had entered the baths. Nyton watched her advance and sudden departure with his rear peripheral.

Sigurd's arrival was completely unexpected and this caused Nyton to open his primaries again as he watched the caretaker explain Yukari's state. Miharu's further elaboration finalized the scene and Nyton sighed a bit. What would cause Yukari to do something like that? he thought.

"How unfortunate. I had hoped we could have had a nice morning discussion among the senior staff." he said with a slight hint of disappointment to his voice.

Serizawa occupied the seat at the table directly to the right of Sora, a small grin on his face as his nose caught the aroma of cooked eggs wafting about the air. He looked down at the omelette sitting haphazardly on the plate in front of him and, despite its messy appearance, he was ready to start eating.

"Are we waiting for the rest or can we just start eating now?" he asked to nobody in particular. "It's going to be a busy day today and I'd like to get breakfast out of the way quickly."

Looking about quickly, he added at the end, "Also, is there anyway I can get an apple or something as well?"

With the last plate set down, Miyoko slid into the seat and started eating quietly. With how the day was shaping up already, to attract any attention would just be making herself a target.

Not too long after Ichi's request, Hinoto scurried out from the kitchen and set an apple besides his dish. "Here," she gave him a smile and then rushed back to the kitchen. The fruit was still a little damp from the water scrubbing Hinoto had given it to get rid of the coat of insecticide and other preservative chemicals.

* * *

"That can't be helped," Kotori answered Nyton. "Luckily, we can probably survive the lack of an executive officer today and do without the main cannon for the time being."

Sora said a quick, silent prayer before touched the plate of food in front of her. She repositioned her plate, her place setting and her cup so it was more comfortable for her to reach and handle it all. She had watched Serizawa and Miyoko start to eat before she decided to pick up her fork and start eating as well.

"Yes, ma'am," Tom said before standing out of the bath and wrapping his towel around his waist. Drops of water fell all around him from his rushed exit out of the bath, leaving a small stream behind him.

"I'm going to get something from the kitchen for both of us. Please take Yukari to her room." The Yamataian's blonde hair whipped around, spraying more water about. "I will get us both some food."

He acted with the utmost professionalism, although the stony frown on his face betrayed his worry. He had also used the XO's first name, a mark of his authority regarding their relationship, which transcended rank.

He would watch over Yukari, his mate, as a tiger would her cubs.

Tom slipped on his clothing and left the room quietly.

Kotori watched Tom and Sigurd (bearing the comatose Yukari) leave the public baths and then turned to look Yoroko's way. "You might want to head on over to the wardroom soon if you'd like to eat a warm breakfast."

Sigurd nodded and obeyed, recognizing the shift in command as well as the personal touch.

Unfortunately, the only way to take her to the couple's room was to walk by the wardroom, with everyone sitting down. Though she was wrapped in a towel, she was still dripping wet.

" ... " The damage to morale such a scene could create — Sigurd carrying a lifeless-looking Yukari to her room — could be significant. It would be best to explain the situation, but he had an objective to complete first.

He left the public baths and followed Tom as far as the kitchen, then kept on walking, maintaining awareness of any possible reactions up until the point he made it to the top of the wardroom stairs. Soon he arrived at Yukari and Tom's room, and after giving her a little more of the fruit juice, went outside the room and stood guard, waiting for Tom's return.

Yoroko looked over at Nyton. "I slept very well, it is kinda nice to have my own room. There were certain...distractions at Ft.Ready that sometimes made sleeping difficult." Yoroko said as she recalled chalk grenades exploding above her, and blushed slightly as she remembered a certain pair that consistently made some noise almost every night.

Kotori said:
You might want to head on over to the wardroom soon if you'd like to eat a warm breakfast.

Is it breakfast time already? Yoroko pondered before silently confirming with Miharu that it was indeed breakfast time. "Ah, thanks Kotori-Taisa, I guess I let the time slip past me." After Yoroko said that she started to get out of the hot tubs and wrapped herself in a towel. "Arigatou Kotori-Taisa, Nyton-Shoi. Will you be coming to breakfast as well?" Yoroko asked politely.

Kotori - oddly enough - answered for Nyton: "Claymere-Shoi is going to stay with me a while longer. I need to talk to him."

"I see." Yoroko said acceptingly. I wonder why? Doesn't matter I guess, it isn't really any of my business. Yoroko mused as she walked in to the shower/changing room to get her stuff. As soon as Yoroko had grabbed her belongings she went back to her room and slipped into her uniform. Taking special care to put everything precisely back into it's predetermined spot.

After a few minutes of cleaning up the room Yoroko started toward the wardroom. When Yoroko entered, she looked for a seat and saw one next to Sanjuro. If I recall correctly, this is Sanjuro's first assignment as well. I wonder how he is doing, Yoroko thought to herself as she recalled meeting Sanjuro for the first time. "Sanjuro-san, is it okay if I sit here?" Yoroko asked politely, as she approached the table.

Kotori left silence linger for a couple of seconds after Yoroko departed and then turned her head to look at Nyton. "Please turn around so you can rest your forearms over the rim of the bath and rest your chin over them."

Sanjuro had been so intent on enjoying his omelet (or at least trying...he found the taste rather bland, and began to wish he'd brought his bag with him. Perhaps next time...) that he did not take notice to Yoroko when she entered the room. Needless to say, Sanjuro's intent on his food demanded his attention so much that Yoroko's sudden inquiry came as a slight shock to the medical officer.

Sanjuro immediately shot up, sending his chair flying behind him and his fork clattering rather loudly against his plate as he turned, expecting one of his superior officers to be standing there...but was instead met with the gaze of one of the newer arrivals on the Miharu. He recalled this one being present at the Cafe...a Mizuno Yoroko, to be perfectly precise. Immediately, Sanjuro ducked his head and bowed, despite himself and out of pure habit, and answered her in his usual tone.

"Yes, you may sit there, Mizuno-Hei."

Serizawa took a bite out of the apple that Hinoto had given him before he started to eat his omelette quietly and peacefully. However, that peacefulness was disturbed by the commotion of Sanjuro's overreaction to Yoroko's voice. Serizawa paused, fork held in midair with his hand as a piece of egg was seated precariously upon the prongs, and looked over at Sanjuro, Yoroko and the fallen chair with a frown on his face. Shaking his head a little, the scientist brought the fork to his mouth and swallowed down the piece of egg.

Before picking up anymore of the omelette with his fork, Serizawa looked over toward Sora and whispered to her, "Is it just me or does Ashitaka-Heisho seem a bit tightly wound?"
