RP: YSS Eucharis [Mission 9.2] Salvaging Parts and Hearts

"We've received an unknown contact on sensors, so salvaging's called off. I need to get the turrets left in this container swapped out with the damaged ones. Can you be my muscle moving them around and into position?"
"Will do what I can Shosa."
Irenika replied as she checked with Charisma on the ship's status as it went about restarting its primary system.

"Charisma, once you are ready, detach those damaged turrents... and Shosa, update Taisa to confirm that I'm with you at the moment in changing the turrets."

Takeyu listened in on the start up; he had quickly grabbed a repair kit from a nearby damage control station and monitored his surroundings carefully, he wanted to be ready in case something went wrong with the restart sequence.

He checked with Charisma to see where his fellow techs were, and noted where Junko Takeda was, with a few moments of thought he nodded his head.

"Takeda-Heisho, Nayacesen-hei here. I'm headed to engineering, do you need my assistance anywhere?" he sent as he quickened by pace, but kept his eyes and ears out for trouble.

"Hai, Taisa." Kumiko turned, sending a quick text to to Junko to let her know that she'd been tasked with a new job. Not that I was all that useful to them at the moment... She made her way to the medbay, then paused, having thought of something, and sent out two quick messages.

Taisa, are there any specific questions you want asked? If she's responsive enough, I might be able to get specifics out of her.

Shosa, I'm currently outside of the medbay, preparing to speak with the NMX nekovalkyrja under the Taisa's orders.

Takeyu was almost to engineering when he heard Yaichiro's request; he then sent his own. "Nayacesen-hei here. Headed to Engineering to see if I can be of any use there in getting the ship ready. Shuttle bay work is only half done, portside door has been cut away but the starboard door is still attached," he slowed his pace down just a bit in case he was needed elsewhere.

Taisa Hanako looked over Sune's reports, grumbling under her breath. "According to my diagonostics, the engine will work if we need it to, but using it in this condition will damage it more until it falls apart. We will keep it offline for the time being. There should be at least one replacement in the Frederick Cargo, but it would take time to replace. Preferably we might do it somewhere with a crane. The inoperative quad turrets are free," she noted. "This is taking too long."

Meanwhile, Gally-Shoi joined Hanako on the bridge, sitting at the mission operations station. She began helping out by matching the Eucharis' damaged parts to the YSS Frederick's cargo list and then sending the part details to Victory and Hikari down in the cargo bay, so that she could have the parts ready.

"Nayacesen-hei, turn around, get in one of the Lorath repair pods, and switch out those turrets immediately," Hanako ordered the technician. She then replied to Kumiko: "Just ask her everything useful you can think of."

Erika, Hammer, and Julix reported to Yaichiro that they were with the civilians.

(OOC: NPCing Nika with her player's consent)

Yaichiro sent a message to Hanako, informing her of the locations and status of the various crew that had replied, and he was still awaiting replies from the others. He again checked standing orders for the crew, to keep an eye on who was doing what, and saw the order given to Nayacesen-Hei. He sent a communication.

Nayacesen-Hei, your new order was just forwarded to me by Charisma. Some of the turrets are in the DOC still. I'm having Irenika-Hei assist me. Be ready to work fast.

Immediately afterward, he looked to Nika and watched her lower a turret into position. "Alright, turn the handle at the base of the turret 90 degrees and it should auto-lock into place."

Nika-Hei did so with some effort, and she felt a sudden shift in the Mindy's hands, and heard the faint "shhhhnk" through the physical contact as it locked into place. Yaichiro didn't hear it, as the sound didn't travel through space, but Charisma informed him that the new turret was mounted.

Information fed to the bridge as Charisma ran diagnostics on the turret and finally green-lighted it, which fed back to Yaichiro and Nika. With Yaichiro's consent, Nika went off to get the next turret.

Takeyu came to a sudden stop and turned around, then headed back toward the shuttle bay, but not before putting the kit back in the damage control station and then headed through the power armor bay and into the shuttle bay.

He looked around briefly, thinking to himself on where he had seen the pods before, due to being so focused on the doors he hadn't yet taken in the full scope of the shuttle bay.

Other than the Starfighter that he had noticed; he eventually found one of the Paa-Zem Advanced Construction Pod nestled up against the wall. Sadly, he found that it was located in just such a way that he'd have to menuver his way out of the shuttlebay, as it was aimed toward the door he had yet to cut. "Figures," he muttered as he hurried to the pilots pod and opened up the canopy.

The inside looked rather isolated. It didn't make him feel any better though, but at least for him there was 'some' room to move around in. He got inside and sealed up the canopy, then brought the machine online.

It took him a few moments to reconfigure the controls to his liking; then he eased it slowly into the air and menuvered over the starfighter and through the opening he had made a little earlier.

He listened for any signs of metal groaning against metal, which would've meant that he wasn't piloting it good, but in this case he had cleared the doors and breathed out a sigh of relief when he found that his work had done some good. "Close," he said and flew out of the shuttle bay.

As he came around and made his way toward the DOC; he then off a message to inform Yaichiro of his status.

Nayacesen-hei here. I've cleared the shuttle bay and am enroute, I don't know how to replace those turrets though, I'll need to ask that you run me through the process the first time please. Even just a list of instructions will suffice.

Yaichiro responded, as Nika-Hei went to get another turret. She presented it to Takeyu, since he could move it faster.

"Nayacesen-Hei, Irenika-Hei, we'll do this. Irenika-Hei will help unload them from the DOC, then disconnect the Kuma from it and put it into the shuttlebay. Nayacesen-Hei, you'll take the turrets and set them into position. Then you'll look for a handle at their base and turn it clockwise 90 degrees with your manipulators to lock the turret into place. Be careful to make sure it's all the way inserted into the hull, because you won't be able to turn the handle backwards once you've twisted it. I'd have to open panels to mess with it, and that takes time."

Sune checked on the progress of the sector scan the Taisa requested. While waiting for the results he performed a aetheric scan which can back negative. "Taisa who ever the unkowns are they are not using aether generators. I am instructing Charisma to conduct a power and control check on each of the replaced turrets and to notify Engineering of any difficulties so they can take action." he said as he entered the commands to the MEGAMI.

Understood Shosa
Takeyu sent and moved the pod over to the cargo-bay to pick up the first turret. He grabbed it with the manipulator arm and started moving over the hull, he watched its features fly by before he got into position.

He gently pushed the damage turret out of the way and positioned the new one over the now vacant hole. Looking down at the hole, and then back at the turret.

Looking around the base of the turret; he found the handle that Yaishiro was referring to and, after double checking the turrets position, he turned the handle clockwise ninety degrees and watched it settle into the base.

With a sigh he turned his pod around and began to make his way back; hopeful that the turret was functional and that its external appearance didn't hide any internal problem.

Takeyu felt several shifts in space as the area around Eucharis became occupied with twenty Elysian starships from the newly-created Star Army of Yamatai Tenth Fleet. Eucharis was safe for now.

Hanako sent a brief "Thank you" to the Tenth Fleet Commander, Duxi, and then got on the intercom. "It looks like the local fleet has the situation in hand now," she announced. "You may stand down from battle stations and resume repair work or whatever you need to do, including relax. I may call a meeting in the cargo bay once everyone is back aboard. Yaichiro and Takeyu, please let me know when the turrets are replaced."

Yaichiro sent a reply, as Irekina-Hei returned to the DOC and took the shuttle into the shuttlebay. The air was slowly vented from the DOC first, so the remaining turrets didn't get sucked out into open space rapidly.

"Understood. I'd like to load the damaged turrets into the cargo bay if possible. A few of these turrets aren't damaged in the same ways, so six damaged turrets with parts swaps might translate to a couple functional spares. The rest can be fabrication bay materials or discarded. Is that alright, assuming time and space permits?

"That is fine," Hanako replied.

Junko leaned against the console and sighed; crash start-ups were always eventful, to say the least, but executing one with unrepaired battle damage in an alert condition made it even more exciting. One of the power feeds to a capacitor bank – naturally the one she hadn't been able to check before – had burned out. Some quick rerouting had prevented any lasting damage without sacrificing more than a fraction of the stand-by power capacity, a far better outcome than losing the whole capacitor bank. Though the evolution as a whole had ended successfully, Junko was worn out. Closing her eyes for a moment felt far better than it should have, but there was business, specifically unacknowledged message traffic, to attend to. Picking up a handset, she keyed in Yaichiro. “Shosa, this is Takeda. Apologies for my poor response time. I've been monitoring the start-up process and we're now fully online without any sign of further, secondary damage. Unless otherwise directed, I intend to return to the repairs in progress. Please advise.”

He stared through the cockpit windows and let out a sigh of relief. "Never thought I'd be glad to see the calvalry arrive," he said as he pulled up to the cargobay and took out another turret.

Maneuvering the pod around the ships hull; he headed to another turret that needed to be replaced. He looked around first, saw the ships and figured that perhaps he could relax just a bit. "Whoever it is that the Taisa picked up, can't possibly be stupid enough to take on the tenth fleet," he said smugly and went about replacing the turret. Then again, perhaps it'd be stupid to think about it that way... the Mishu have proven already that they are a formidable force, who's the say those here aren't? he thought for a moment and kept one eye on the turret replacement and another eye on the area around him.

"Understood, Takeda-Heisho. I will forward your status to the Taisa. Please continue your repairs and use your judgment.

Noting her response and forwarding it to Hanako, Yaichiro then sent another communication to Takeyu.

Nayacesen-Hei, as you replace the turrets and return to the DOC to secure the next ones, can you grab the ejected ones and place them in the cargo bay as you do so? Some of these are damaged in different ways and could be parts swapped with each other to make some working spares, I believe. The Taisa has consented to our doing so if time permits.

Sune remained seated at the science station. He ran a series of algorithms on the sensor data to try and find the ships that they had seen. So where are they? We have not detected any fold events or other FTL activity other than the arrival of the Elysian ships. So they must be out there somewhere. Who ever the unknowns are they would appear to have a formidable stealth technology.

He listened to the repair progress, and took note of the status displayed on the systems monitor. Repairs are going well. The Engineer Kage-Shoga seems to have the repair effort well in hand. he thought.

He turned to Hanako, "Taisa, since it appears that the immediate crisis has been mitigated, if you would like to leave the bridge I can stay and mind the store for you. I have some additional scans and data analysis algorithms that I wish to perform."

Changing turrents seems easy enough as her current task was to help unloading the new ones while loading the damaged ones out and in of the DOC respectively. Her curiosity did however, requested Charisma to display the machanism of the installation, much to her frustration looking at the specs and schematics.

With the arrival of Takeyu in a construction pod, the speed in completing the task went much faster and Nika found herself in the DOC, helping just to load and unload the turrents.

ON: YSS Eucharis

"Thank you," Hanako told Sune. "I intend to talk to the crew and then assemble them for promotions. I think almost everyone deserves one after this last mission." She stood up from the captain's chair and left for cargo bay to check on the progress down there.

Yaichiro, meanwhile, had elected to return to the Cargo Bay and either start helping in ship repairs proper; or to somehow learn how to operate that Lorath Pod to help expedite the turret swapping. Charisma had no data on how to pilot it, and he couldn't do much more in an AMES. He checked his oxygen, to make sure his supply was still sufficient, before walking toward the Cargo Lift.

The Taisa entered through the main passageway and walked inside, looking over all the recovered supplies and parts spread over the floor.

"Ah, Taisa. Thank you again for the rescue," Victory greeted her, "and for the offer to join the Eucharis crew."

Hanako smiled to Victory and then noticed Yachiro over by the cargo elevator and went over to see him.

Yaichiro had briefly stopped to glance at the broken apart Mindy he'd recovered, pondering for a brief time using what shards were left of the armor for an experiment later, when he saw Hanako approaching. As he hadn't done so yet, he turned toward her and gave the appropriate bow for boarding the ship. He'd have given it when he first arrived, but the situation did not permit it at the time.

"We have a chance to talk now," Hanako told him. "Shall we go someplace private?"

"Very well, Taisa. It's nice to see you again." Yaichiro said, smiling gently through the AMES' helmet. They hadn't parted under the best of circumstances, but hopefully this would be a chance to fix that problem...he'd had a lot of time to think. "Wherever you want to talk is fine."

"How about the armory?" Hanako suggested. her big golden eyes looked thoughtful.

"Alright..." Yaichiro said, disconnecting and picking up the Sylph Pack and the Aether Submachine Gun. "That works just fine, and I can drop these off while I'm there. I have a few things I'd like to talk to you about as well, time permitting."

After riding the cargo lift, they made their way inside. Hanako sat down on a stack of grenade boxes tied down on the armory's upper level.

Yaichiro took a moment to put away the Sylph Pack and the Aether Submachine Gun before joining her and taking off his AMES' helmet. He was grateful for the fact Yamataians didn't sweat like Nepleslians did, or he wouldn't exactly be presentable at the moment. He stayed quiet, to allow the superior officer to speak first.

After a minute of silence it became clear that she was waiting on him, too.

"I apologize, I thought since you sought me out, and are the superior officer, I should let you speak first...the first matter I have to speak of is a matter of business, and the second a more personal one. If you have any more important matters, feel free to stop me and say what you want to say."
The first thing he did, while waiting for her to respond, was open the AMES and put his hand inside, pulling a letter out of his uniform pocket inside. He handed it to her, to read when she was ready.

The letter read,
"Princess, You may not know me, but my name is Celebration, the Captain of the Fruna Ruica. While yes, I understand that I am a Lorath, I promise you I do not hold their preconceived and unwarranted notions of you and your government, and to that affect I have disentangled myself from theirs. I've gone off track though. I would like to arrange a meeting, about a possible business arrangement between myself and your government, one that I feel could benefit the both of us. Included in this letter is my contact information, and I leave the arrangements of location to you. I will come completely in the spirit of open talks, and as such I leave it to you to pick the location, so you are able to know it is a safe place. I look forward to hearing your response and thank you for your time.

Signed Ringmaster Rish'Til'Tuk Celebration Llamnel."

"What is this?" Hanako asked before opening it.

"Long story short, I went to purchase a Lorath-made car from one of the only non-UOC places I could find it, under an assumed name. The captain of the craft I purchased it from somehow knew who I was and requested I give this to you...how she knew who I was, or that I would even see you in any timely manner, I haven't the slightest idea. I agreed to give it to you, but no more. It's your choice to ignore it or follow up. She says she has some sort of business proposition and wishes to meet you. The issue is that she's Lorath -- though she says she's not affiliated with the government or anything and doesn't share their views and prejudices."

"I see," Hanako said, frowning lightly at the letter. She did not open it. "How does it feel to be back, so far?"

"Good and active, to say the least." He said, giving a light smile. "Compared to arranging exhibits and schedules, it's a little more like what I used to know...I think I needed that break to be able to move forward."

"It has not been easy out here," Hanako told him. "Thinking about the future of this war makes me feel sick. There will be so much more death before it ends. The best we can do is to get through it with friends at our sides to help."

Yaichiro nodded. "Yeah...honestly, when we split paths last time, I was content just to serve my term and quietly get my discharge. When this second war started though, I decided to stick around. Just in case I was needed...I'm sorry about a lot of things from last time. I wasn't really doing well after the UOC split."

"Neither was I," Hanako admitted. "I wonder if they will survive the war."

"So do I...I adopted a sprite over there as a daughter when she lost her ship, but she stayed behind to serve the land she was born from. Sometimes I wonder..." Yaichiro said, sighing. "If the SMX hadn't manipulated Uesu-sama into the position to resign, I have to wonder if the UOC would really have split..."

"I like to believe he's out there somewhere still fighting for us," said Hanako. "I wonder what ever happened to Yuriko."

"The last time I saw her was when she gave me Midori to take home to Yamatai and sold her house to me...Midori's still living there in my care, since she hasn't really gotten better. There are rumors that Yuriko-san had some sort of company going, but with the blackout, that information might not be current."
Yaichiro waited a moment before standing to bow deeply. “I'm sorry...for everything that happened back then. I'd wrongly felt betrayed by my emperor, I'd lost my daughter, and I saw doubt and suspicion everywhere I looked...by the time you saw me again, I was tired. Very tired. I'd come back to the Eucharis somehow expecting it to be just like the Sakura I left, but...time changes all things. The ship, her crew, everything had changed in some capacity. Add to that all the politics and it just didn't work...but the museum let me rest, and I'm willing to try again, if you'd have me aboard..." He continued bowing as he said this, the bow not a subordinate to superior bow. This bow was far lower than the difference in their ranks would have made necessary.

"I accept your apology, Yaichiro, and welcome you back to the ship. I hope we can become close friends again and that you will also get to know the rest of the crew personally. This is a good new beginning."

"Thank you...and one more thing I should make clear...I don't hold any more grudges against Uesu-sama. You see...I had previously taken his resignation at the Elysian Plague issue as a sign of guilt...but that's not how it was. The SMX sent that information to the Nepleslians, you see....and Admiral Davis personally came and gave that information to Motoyoshi Taisho-Shogun. With the Nepleslians and the UOC both questioning him like that, he had to resign to avoid a war on three fronts. I see that now. The SMX maneuvered us all like fools."

"Melisson is the most dangerous person in this war," Hanako replied. The hatred was clear in her voice. "This is all her doing."

Yaichiro nodded. "From the destruction of Taiie to the cession of the UOC from the Empire...I wouldn't put it past her…perhaps we should think of happier things for a while."

Hanako had difficulty coming up with anything happy at the moment. "Perhaps business would work. I was wondering if you could set up an array of small graviton beams on the hull that could be used for rapid, easy salvaging."

"That should be no problem, Taisa. I've already been thinking on how to arrange them on a hull to do so, and have already noticed them in the cargo you ordered. I've also been working on a few other things here and there, though a few simple tests need to be run on the technology. One of my ideas might actually help expedite the Projector Array, if we have the resources to construct it. A 20 foot Construction Mecha which can be made in a Fabrication Bay. While not combat capable, Nishitama City has been using it for a couple weeks without issue."

"I can’t see how a large walking mecha would help install small projector arrays," Hanako replied.

"There are various benefits, but I have no problem doing it another way if desired. It would be a good chance to learn how to use that Lorath Pod, assuming the Mindy 3A couldn't carry them all at once."

Yaichiro briefly debated how best to accomplish the task, as he pulled out a datapad and pulled up the arrangement on the Eucharis' hull which he'd been considering. While there were a number of the smaller projectors as Hanako had suggested, there was some size variance to allow the grabbing of larger and more distant objects.

"I was also thinking of some sort of automatic inert gas system or an ionized water mist system would be useful for controlling fires," Hanako added. "Also, we have life-form scanners and anti-bug systems to be installed. They will help guard against insects and intruders."

"I'll start running through possible options for that as well. I recall the discussion in the wardroom about it. As for the life form scanners, I'm familiar with them. I'll start calculating the optimal locations for coverage for those. Unless you had any specific places picked out already?”

"Good. I am certain we will come up with a number of other improvements to this old ship," Hanako grinned, feeling a little better now. "She is our home, after all."

"Yes. She may not be the Sakura, but she's just as good from what I can tell." Yaichiro said, lightly patting the wall beside him. "Now I'm able to see that."

"Better than Sakura. I designed her myself!" Hanako laughed. "But she's got Sakura's soul...and by that I mean the original MEGAMI."

PAUSE

Takeyu positioned the next turret in place; then after insuring it was properly set, he moved the pod up a bit to gather three of the discharged turrets in his area and then brought them back toward the cargobay.

Glancing down at his instruments, he saw that everything was still running perfectly, despite the pounding that the ship had ben through it appeared that at least this pod had gotten out with very little damage. "I'll have to give it a look over once things have settled down," he told himself and smiled.

When he got up to the cargobay, he set down each damaged turret carefully, making certain they were well out of the way.

He mentally checked the number that were floating out in space and knew that he had only one more turret to set and then he'd grab the remaining turrets. "Unless I'm not noticing any more disconnected, only one more turret to go," he grabbed the last turret and moved out.

RESUME: YSS Eucharis

Yaichiro nodded at Hanako's mention of making the Eucharis and the reuse of Charisma. "I read that in the specifications. I think that it was a good move to reuse the original MEGAMI. Not only out of kindness to her, but also her experience...I'm working on a class refit myself. The old Yui-class Scouts still surviving are only a third through their life expectancy, and the ones still serving probably have among the most experienced MEGAMI in the Army. Can I have permission to have a detailed analysis of Charisma later for my research? She's not 8-10 years old like the Yui 2-5 MEGAMI, but she's old enough for her experience to start reflecting possibly."

"I do not think an analysis is necessary," Hanako replied, feeling somewhat defensive of her old friend. "I am not sure she would agree to it either. As for the Yui class, most of them were destroyed with the depot at Nataria...so the remaining ones should not take a huge amount of resources."

Yaichiro noted the defensiveness and nodded. "That's fine. If she wouldn't want to be analyzed, that's her right as far as I'm concerned. And yes, many were destroyed at Nataria; but I think that the Central Defense Fleet alone has 1,000 Yui-scouts in it, and is made mostly of dated craft. That alone warrants their upgrade in my mind. A fair number of systems were inspired from my time on the Eucharis, brief as it was."

"That is good. We need to continue to modernize older ships so that they can be as useful as possible. With your redesign you have extended the life of ships that might otherwise be sent to the scrapyard. From my experience each class should probably be reviewed every two years."

I'm not sure if we have the resources for such an optimal scenario. Even the base Eucharis would be considered out of date, as would most ships in the Army. Some fleets are still using the Sakura and the Nozomi. We'll just have to do what we can, I suppose...still, I am designing the new Yui's Main Gun to work on the Nozomi, since it is also in need of an upgrade. Hopefully, we can locate more old Yuis or even buy some back. Even I own a Yui 5...but the Eucharis' upgrades come first. When did you want to start the upgrades? After the repairs are finished, or during the repairs? I suppose it depends on what level of threat you perceive the unknowns as."

"Immediately would be best. As has been the case before, if the upgrades are essential enough for us, we will pass them on to become part of the standard design," Hanako explained. "Once our starbase arrives--which should be soon--we will also want the wardroom repaired and the lounge carpet replaced due to the fire and foam damage. This salvaging is essentially our shore leave. We already have a new mission waiting on us when we feel ready."

"I understand. I'll get started on that, since the turret swaps seem to be going well. If there's time between that and the arrival of the starbase, maybe we can actually manage some salvaging. Otherwise, we may have to call the whole thing off and focus on repairs." Yaichiro said, pondering the matter, and already debating what could and couldn't be repaired to spec with the replacement parts that had been delivered.

"Alright. It was good getting a chance to talk with you. I hope in the next day or two you also talk with each of the crew and get to know them as well," Hanako suggested.

"I'll make sure to do that." Yaichiro said, smiling lightly at Hanako. "Oh, one more thing. I'm not exactly sure what you meant by 'advisor' when I was brought aboard, so I've been trying not to step on the toes of the rest of the crew when they do their duties, or use too much authority. Exactly what is expected of me in this role?"

"Basically, you will report to me and be my consultant," Hanako explained.

"Do I otherwise act as a standard Engineering Officer, with similar authority, or are there specific people I report to below you?"

"No, you do not report to anyone other than me. You will assist or direct the other engineers as needed."

"Understood. I'm used to odd command structures, though it helps to have them clearly defined. Thank you, Taisa." He was willing to talk more, but couldn't think of much else for the moment. He wouldn't pester her about that letter, and he figured they both had work to do. He waited for her to change the topic, or to dismiss him.

"Alright. Well I suppose we should get started now," Hanako said, rising from the box. "Thank you again," she told him.

He rose, and nodded. "Thank you for everything." These words had some weight to them as he got down from the upper area of the armory and headed toward the Cargo Bay. He figured that Hanako would be calling the meeting soon, and if not, that's where the spare parts were.
