Osaka's doodling

OsakanOne here. The better stuff of my journey to artistic enlightenment ends up here. At this point, it's mostly just experimentation...

Front shot of early Rhys torso

... The cockpit is going to be a detachable part from the exterior, like a smaller simplified power-armour of its own with a power-loader kinda vibe. Note the chest parts - those are going to be arms that fold down, like the Winter, with concealed hands and pile-bunkers. I'm pondering adding an extra joint to give them an extended reach, sort of like a praying-mantis.

Alone, it sorta looks like some sort of construction droid. I might experiment a little with that.

The major arms and legs still need to be added and the back-parts. They're on my external drive, since my internal failed recently and I still haven't salvaged them back but I think they need a fundamental re-working.

Proportionally, I'm kinda going for a Takemikaduchi Type-00R vibe (the purple one I linked earlier -- I'm even using references) but I'm not really seeing it yet *laughs* I need to decide where the major curves of the frame are visually in 2D, then re-model most of this so I can get a higher aesthetic rather than just a base proportional draft.

Kinda has a Mercurius/Vayaete (2:33 - the red & blue mobilesuits) feel, doesn't it, with those side-vents?

I need to figure out a way to lay a muscle-fiber looking part down over the unprotected middle...

I guess I'm going to have be brave and finally learn to UV-unwrap and experiment with [displacement/bump/normal/texture] mapping types, huh?

Probably going to go for that artificial-muscle look of Crysis. Will probably need to study up on human musculature to get it right.

So far, looking at 10 gravidic centrifuges per limb (6 per primary, 2 per secondary) and 8 per shoulder-binder/intermediary in conjunction with 5 condensers in a hub configuration, 6 rectifiers and an engine assembly that needs fleshing out...

Probably going to slap either drones or rectifiers in the hollows of the centrifuges.

In total, we're looking at something like 60 centrifuges for the limbs in the final.

Pretty scary performance, considering the Caernarfon has four hubs of six wrapped around a central assembly and its over a hundred meters long.

Eek!

Edit:

The cockpit is surprisingly roomy from the inside... The idea is for pilots to be able to withdraw their arms from the controls at times. Lots of room to stow useful stuff, systems, etcetera.

I'm trying to work out a way to make it suitable for sleeping inside, since the torso's core (the smaller mecha) will go onto become a kind of survival/mining unit so if one of these things is trashed somewhere and makes it out alive, the pilot has a chance in hell of survival.

In a way, I guess a Rhys is two units, not one.

Gone through my backups for the old models - the one with the dynamic limbs and the spine. About 20 hours of work, 60 if you include the trial and error involved. Its gone.

Looks like I lost everything. When they replaced the charger, they also gave me a new machine -- and didn't even hand the old drive back, which is standard procedure in their contract. Yes, I have a nice higher spec machine, but I've lost a huge amount of work.

Seriously, sending off a whole bloody laptop when all you want is a charger. What the FUCK.

I'm... Pretty infuriated, really. Gonna complain tomorrow morning and scream at their customer service people.

That said, it gives me a second chance to look at the concept fresh and start over with new eyes so I have to look on the bright-side.

Lesson: Don't EVER trust anyone with your computer, even if its in complete working order.

With structol based gel.. Probably going to create the skeleton out of hard components then use this to soften its visage. While huge at 6 meters tall, I could drain out the gel into compressed lungs, then adjust the legs and hips and easily bring it down within a few seconds to about 2.5/3 meters.

Testing some new shaders for interface stuff in the cockpit.
Seems to work.

Also some work on a new ship. Lol huge factory. Ship is loosely 500 meters long and has about four times the storage of the Maras and twelve times that of a Sakura-class and should be able to build its own replacement parts and build other smaller ships and units in the field. Going for a Starcraft/Command Center type thing, I guess.

Going to be learning architectural and interior modelling soon.

Wish me luck, SARP!

Osaka, the only think I can think to say is "amazing". Especially that you model the interior components to your mecha...I don't know anyone else who does that. Makes it feel much more realistic and sound from an engineering standpoint.

I also agree with Doshii and Aendri, your planetary stuff is quite beautiful, which makes me wonder what you'll come out with when you have more practice with the program! Great work, keep it up! : )

Whee... Our internet got cut off so I'm basically sat around modelling full time to kill time.

Decided to try rebuilding the limbs from scratch. Added some rectifiers (particle projectors)... When at high capacity, they'll extend and slide out, sort of like a sprinkler system, but I need to figure that out.

The new legs split half down the middle neatly as a consequence of my new workflow, which is nice.

As a consequence, I can make a kind of 'demi quad' out of it, without needing to bring the back pair down, saving the effort, so I can strap more tat (medical/survival supplies, equipment, etc) to the limbs and body.

Similarly, I can make a thinner 'low profile' mode for the legs, though I'm really not happy with the shape. They look kind of ugly.

If its this big and working with regular armor, it really should be working as a packhorse, especially as a quad, with all that extra carrying ability (yay).

Anyway, a consequence is that this should make the new shoulder design a bit easier to manage. The feet are also a bit hardier and practical now, which I'd wanted to do for a while.

Also decided to try modelling to some assumed NTSE standards, with additional armor plating, hardening up a few components (shoulders, thickening the trunk up, hip and skirting plating), some bulkier shield generators (little cone things), adding some more contemporary propulsion gear (since the integrated aether plasma might be a poor choice in urban spaces and for political reasons -- plus the stealth advantage against aether) and building things more practicality.

Also starting to work on those sniper-cannons again that I lost when the harddrive died..

Trying to work out what I'd need to make a strike at an object in orbit from the ground. Not really viable for speedy combat, but a snub/shortened barrel version might be good for tankish action. Maybe I should mount treads under the legs and have the feet retract, if I want those NTSE sales? *laughs*

Gonna work a bit on the HUD and figure out the hard high-res mechanics once I have the shoulders solved, since I'm mostly happy with the legs. I'll probably fudge the fighter transformation like I did last time :3

Something for the Lorath (probably?)

Originally designed for the purpose of tactical assault and surgical bombing strikes, the Lancer packs a lot of whollop for it is for its size, though it is larger than most fighters in use today.

Its original compliment of weapons was quite respectable - four forward facing Hi'ki plasma cannons, 210 cubic meters of storage for munitions and equipment of up to 20 tons. Coupled with its speed and VTOL/dogfighting manoeuvrability, the Lancer could keep the battle-field moving and supplied - able to deliver and airdrop everything from heavy supplies, tanks, armour and personnel from most any altitude and just as easely recover it.

Of particular note is the main gun: 22 meter long aether-magnum (I'll clarify on this concept later) known as the 'avenger', and buried into the form of the Lancer, designers joke that the Lancer was an attempt to mount a craft to an Aether-Magnum, rather than the weapon to a ship - simply as a means to get the weapon airborne.

By all means, it belongs on a starship easily double the size of the Lancer, such as a compact gunship.

While limited to 32 rounds, it is undetectable when firing as it does not pull from the aetheric landscape as most weapons do, giving it a key element of surprise during opening engagements, especially against targets of strategic importance.

Able to punch holes through defensive lines and make especially light work of heavy artillery, its party-piece is to carve defensive lines and fox-holes into the land for infantry or to create massive bank walls of superheated fog and plasma, allowing infantry the time to re-arm with its supplies or board for rapid extractions.

While unquestionably effective when nested away into a landscape or for drops, the Lancer lacked the staying-power and particularly the armour to keep it alive long enough to make it a viable drop-ship for trans-orbital maneuvers, especially against dedicated fighters and particularly in testing against power-frames. For this reason, it may optionally be fitted with four rotary plasma flak guns and 12 anti-fighter missiles for use on priority missions -- though it remains a glass-cannon, relying on sharp intel and extremely skilled piloting to survive.

The Lancer can sustain a crew of two (pilot/navigator) fully for up to 8 months without resupply. Combined with its mobility, mobile armament and keen communications and sensors, it suits the role of a temporary base for action deep inside enemy territory where it can be buried and hidden.

Too wide for the damn forums grr

Work in progress... I'd like to get some feedback, since I really feel aether needs summing up properly. Its a deep part of the SARP noone really touches, as if its the beast in the cupboard and that isn't right.

If anything, we should revel in that which makes us unique.

Its a little early and once I've got the articles right (I'm happy to take as long as I have to) I'd like to follow up with some illustrations to further explain these ideas.

Aether
The Aether is a term used to describe the the near limitless energy offered by Zero-point energy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero-point_energy), and related technologies discovered by the Yamatai Star Empire in YE20.

Aether-generators are the leading energy source and a cornerstone in the SARPiverse, giving rise to faster-than-light travel and nightmarish weaponry the likes of which the universe has never seen.

Aetheric Generators
An Aetheric device is like a faucet that pierce the gaps between dimensions, the branes in order to deliver energy on tap.

If you're confused, it helps to think of aetherics (a nice simple term for aetheric technologies) as a free all-you-can-eat lunch, where 'the house' will let you take anything you want and as much of it as you can for the cost of entry (activation charge) -- but if what you take doesn't fit on your plate or you have left-overs, the house will be angry and the consequences can be catastrophic.

The smallest aetheric generators are the about the size of a lunchbox and can be thought of as very small plates that need refilling quite often. The largest are used in starships and can gather huge amounts of energy to power aetheric weaponry.

The equipment you use determines the power (your plate size) and the efficiency (left-overs that will destroy your device) that your device can use to harness that power.

Basic Aetheric Science

Aetheric technology was actually discovered by accident by enterprising Yamataian garage-inventers and although understood practically, the science wasn't uncovered until quite recently further research was made involving what has been dubbed as aetheric plasma.

Aetheric generators actually work by pulling pairs of gauge-bosons (sub-atomic particles which carry the fundamental forces of nature) out of surrounding space and arrange them inside itself as a special kind of lattice, or spacial sieve which grapples and holds photons like a tiny circuit.

This shape is then compressed and the vibration of that lattice is controlled. Eventually, 'excess' energy from quantum and gauge-fields flows through the lattice as tiny vibrations (amplitude) which are then passed through that circuit from the gauge-bosons onto their captive photons (mediators of electromagnetic force) which can then be tricked into releasing their own energy which can be collected (wavelength) in a variety of ways.

• The more precisely a generator is tuned, the smaller the holes in the sieve can be and the more efficiently it collects energy.

• Similarly, the larger a generator is, the stronger its pull from the aether (all aetheric taps within a given space are competing for energy - like three straws of varying thickness sucking up different amounts of milkshake from a glass).

Aetheric Bomb
Imagine we take a very small plate and pile it up with a huge amount of food - more than it could ever handle without special stabilised conditions - until the plate itself can't handle it anymore.

At the moment of detonation, the computer-assisted stabilisation (artificial precision) is removed and that 'plate' cracks, releasing that huge amount of energy back out into the surrounding space-time.

That is the 'Aetheric bomb', the first true aether weapon, commonly used on starships (for example, the AS-7, used by Yamataian vessels). Aetheric grenades do exist but are quite rare and not at all practical.

A practical example of an Aetheric Bomb would be the Aether-Flechette, a guided faster-than-light aetheric warhead using a combined field system to propel itself. Despite its small size, it maintains a respectable yield of SDR4.

Aetheric Beam weapons
The sale, maintenance and manufacture of Aetheric Beam weapons is primarily controlled by Yamataian government. Any unauthorised use is strictly illegal under Yamataian guidelines. In many nations, it is a felony to operate an aetheric weapon within an atmosphere.

There are many types of aetheric beam weapons but most follow a relatively simple idea of compressing the contents of an aether generator into a high-energy volatile degenerate state (instead of feeding off its energy potential as electricity) then using scalar repulsion to direct the output at a target to violent effect.

As the round leaves the barrel, the gauge-boson lattice carrying the force-potential of the shot stops vibrating and it rapidly begins releasing its photons, rendering the shot visible, usually white or pale blue and then shifting through the spectrum to red as the number of photons rapidly drops.

With no wavelength and no grip on its own photons and an equal number of X and Y gauge-bosons (resulting in a neutral charge), the shot is no longer affected by electromagnetic or scalar fields and aether beams will freely pass through each other with zero displacement or repulsion.

Often, a round can be seen triggering nuclear decay of the gasses it travels through in an atmosphere. The huge release of heat leaves behind a tunnel of superheated plasma giving the illusion of a larger beam and deals secondary damage to targets.

On impact, the effect of an aetheric beam is devastating. At first, the lattice-arrangement is broken and the huge energy potential stored is unleashed. This usually destabilises the nucleus of a physical target, super-heating it. Often a beam will pass cleanly through the target, should it possess sufficient mass and velocity. Despite the damage, this is of course not the intended effect.

The real damage comes from the degenerate-state of the gauge-bosons, triggering matter to collapse on itself. In fact, it can trigger a chain-reaction leading to total annihilation of the target.

Some beam weapons alter the lattice as it leaves the barrel, either further stabilising it into a spherical pellet rather than a beam. While this offers many advantages (reducing its surface-area and so it doesn't leave as much of an observable plasma trail, making evasion more difficult, higher round velocity) -- pellet shots are typically much weaker than beams and lack mass, making them less effective against larger targets such as starships.

An example of a 'pellet' style aetheric beam weapon would be the Aether Gatling Rifle (https://wiki.stararmy.com/doku.php?id=st ... ling_rifle), a weapon which uses multiple barrels to discharge an extremely high number of shots. While technically weaker, the high number of shots strikes multiple points on a target (rapidly chipping away it rather than directly piercing it) and is much easier to re-aim once firing, unlike an unwieldy particle stream which must be aimed before the shot making the Gatling Rifle more practical in high speed combat.

'Turbo' Aether Plasma
Confined into a tight space, gauge-bosons used in an aether-generators will repulse each other quite aggressively and typically begin mediating aether to photons. If they are denied from arranging themselves properly to collect energy in that compressed state, the repulsion effect will grow exponentially.

An Aether Plasma uses this principle to create thrust. Additionally, the particles left behind will continue to repulse the engine and the thrust it leaves behind, providing additional thrust in chain-reaction. Combined with a subspace accelerator, Aether-Plasma offers very aggressive STL acceleration and manoeuvrability compared to other STL propulsion methods.

What's more is it requires zero fuel: the gauge-bosons used (with the exception of the activation charge) virtual particles which exist for as long as the charge called up from the aether does.

An interesting side-note is that aether plasma is still technically considered a weapon and is such banned from the civilian market since anything passing through the trail can incur significant damage (SDR1 to SDR3) which does wonders to discourage pursuers, especially from close air-combat manoeuvres.

While this all sounds near perfect, 'aether plasma' trails can take weeks to dissipate and the particles dissist, leaving behind an observable cyan or orange wake as the lattice releases its captured photons as its charge drops over time. While beautiful, it removes any possible stealth advantage.

Recent advancements in defences against anti-aether weapons have contributed to its popularity: Aether plasma drives can still function within anti-aether fields (situations where the quantum and gauge-fields are too unstable for a generator to collect from) since the same virtual particles can still be formed though they will lack power for the doubler/tripler function (which depends on a higher amplitude or charge to manifest more particles which results in more repulsion which of cause means in more thrust and therefor more speed).

I don't have an exclamation worth using for the level of detail here. Even if it is a result of a single repeated design for the numbers, just the one of those units looks great! And you're putting those rectifiers in the generator, where no one will see it? That's dedication to a design!

Missingno: the rectifiers are an ongoing component that's going to be used inside and out. Its part of the generator, which is going to be an update of an existing submission.

The Aurora?

We're doing a tamed production version but we're going to be putting the particles to real work, too.

First proper shot at architectural modelling. Feels a little sterile and really apologetic, which is what I was going for but... It doesn't look very lived in, so it needs a lot of work. Something feels very incomplete and I'm not happy with the lighting or the lack of detail.

Kind of inspired by Space 2001, Moon, etc... Thinking of doing some research into Zero-G habitats and producing some modular/fabricated rooms about the size of cargo-containers that people can use to help detail the interior of their ships with, as a kind of ship-building product -- locking them together, like lego to build the interior of a ship. I kind of like that metaphor :3

Would like to add some floor plates, model the exterior, figure out where piping would go and re-do the lighting.

In the future, I want to take a crack at some rec-rooms, control rooms, that sort of thing. Just stuff people can plug into their plot. Will also share the geometry to whoever wants it when I'm done so they can make their own changes where it suits them.

I'm really open to suggestions as to what kind of chambers I might make.

PS: Yes, I have a thing for fold-away stuff. the flat-plates on doors are going to be volumetric screens and the big blank screen will also be volumetric, as will the rest of the room. I still need to add a shower, fine-tune some details and model some more assets to fill the room with.

Edit

I've just realized, there's no water. No taps.
To survive, they'd have to drink out of the toilet XD
O lawdy need to fix that.

Looks like we're starting to get somewhere. Bipeds, reverse and quad. Just need to nail out the old shoulder transformation, then I can start working on the cosmetics of making the limbs purdy.

Having fun texturing random things but I want to get my 2D sketches right before I tuck into this.
The new modelling tools in Modo are nice. Intersections are now called booleans and you can easily drag/drop and mess with them non-destructively instead of investing 40 minutes for each one you want to make. I'm hoping there are some tools for defining the scope. Would like to use them extensively.

No sense in making a hypnotoad and hypnosaka is taken. I'm experimenting with animated gif files for when I start animating stuff properly. Yay owls :D
