Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Kotori nodded. "In fact, if such a thing happened, the Daisy Cs would likely be the only thing capable of finding the source of the jamming and disabling it. With Aether Cancellation active, Hoshi would quite litterally depend on the armor team."

"On the bright side, those conditions would prohibit the base from using defenses that are aether-powered. This would also give the Daisy an edge over opponents such as the Black Mindy or the NH-28 NIWS, if those are stationed at the complex."

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

The news of not facing any Black Mindys or NIWS was certainly welcome. However even without facing such there would still be other matters to face. "What is the possible range of the Aether Canceller that may be located in the base? We would definately need to drop in undetected to avoid having it activated on us. If the Hoshi is caught by it before we can fully launch then we may be in trouble." Nyton further questioned.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

"Last time I saw anything like it, it was several hundred kilometers," Kotori ventured to say. She didn't sound sure. "What I do know is that Hoshi has emergency power which should allow it to get into position, at the very least. I do not think they will be inclined to use it early, as this would likely disable the drone aerial defense net the Mikomi faced."

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Yukari listened and made several mental notes along the way. There were not enough Daisy Cs to go around, meaning more had to be made, or squads would be led by one, with the rest being Daisy As.

The ST backup checklist would have to be consulted quickly in order to ensure everyone was covered. Her mental checklist showed it was only the newer crew, and the sprites, who would require it.

She thought the mix of torpedoes was acceptable, but did not understand why the Miharu was to be so active in ship-killing. The odds, at her last tally, were at least 4-to-1, but were more likely to be 6-to-1. Not very good.

However, the Taisa was not done yet, so she looked at her politely and waited.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Kai was suddenly distracted from his french toast and conversation as the Briefing started. Listening intently, he sighed inwardly when Kotori mentioned they would be doing ground work in the Daisy's. This was a relief, as most of his training had been on the ground in Daisy armors. Knowing that boosted the Yamataian's confidence a bit, but that did not fully distract him from the fact that this was his first true combat mission, and it would be a hot one.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Yuzuki sat, watched, and listened.

This was her first time working under a deadline. Suddenly, she was very glad that she had decided to go ahead and update the power armors the night before, rather than getting a little extra sleep - eight hours sounded really ominous, right before a list of stuff like that. It occurred to her that this would probably be her own personal effort, as well; One Yuzuki, many armors. Eight hours.

She wanted to move.

Something in the back of her mind caught her attention and, for a moment, she found herself staring at the small grid she had set up on her datapad. She ignored, for a moment, the new message from the Juni, and followed the lines she had been scribbling.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Things were becoming fairly speculative now so Nyton decided to wait until more of the briefing had been given before asking anything further. He settled in and began to wonder about the weapon loadouts they would require for the Daisy's along with the aerial support. This would be a heavy assault and could be relatively painless if they maintained the initiative.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Aoiko listened quietly to the briefing, idly chewing her breakfast as she thought over Kotori's words. Much of the technical specifics were lost on her - she wasn't particularly religious in keeping up with the details of armour and weaponry, any more than most of the crew would be with mathematics - and so she simply contemplated the arrangements Kotori was proposing.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Yoroko went silent when Kotori started to talk about the mission. The Hei listened intently to all of it, though her attention split after Kotori stopped talking about the fighter craft. I'll have to do ground support too??!!? Yoroko thought worriedly. She had only practiced providing support in space, she hadn't done simulated atmospheric flight let alone the actual thing. Relax...you can do it. You'll just need to do sims, and barring that rely on what you know. The Hei told herself. "Ne Kai, this will be...difficult don't you think?" Yoroko asked her comrade before returning her focus to Kotori.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Kotori waited a moment more to see if other people had anything to say, but all she seemed to be getting were expectant looks. She returned a nod and continued:

"Phase One of our operation will be our entrance in the Bowhordia system, the evaluation of the threats within and the finalization of our battle preparations regarding what we face," Kotori brushed some of her hair back behind a dipped left ear before she continued, the ear flipping back up. "If the situation proves unmanageable for us at that point, we will re-evaluate our objectives and see if something can still be done. If not, we will scrap the operation."

Kotori's expression became hard. "Any victory of mine would be tarnished by the deaths of my subordinates. I am not risking anything lightly." She paused. "The next planned phase of the operation are based an assumption on my part."

"Phase Two will be for Miharu to engage the defenders of the planet where the Daughters of Eve have their outpost. What we should face is the Obakemono's escort group, which includes the Ayame-class cruiser, four Yui-class destroyers and four Ketsueki-class corvettes. My belief is that the base on the planet is actually being evacuated and salvaged because of the increasing presence of the Fourth Fleet in this region of space. With the Ayame having the second largest vehicular and cargo assets after the SS Takumi, that group should be the one left behind while they move the Novacorp gate out and go after our diversion."

"While in the cover of the plasma sphere of one of the ships to oppose us - preferably the Obakemono itself, Miharu will release fighters, shuttles and the auxiliary ship and have those head down planet at the target point while Miharu deals with the rest of the opponents. The largest threat then for the ground assault group will be the Ketsueki corvettes, whom will be underpowered next to Miharu but quite able to be a threat to Hoshi, and any M1 Lamias released since the beginning of the engagement."

"Phase 3 is the ground assault group's approach toward the target site. It involves shaking off any pursuers, defeating the defense net of the installation and then infiltrating it, with Hoshi going on standby if such can be allowed or moving on to a more secure area to wait and return to pickup the armor team. Miharu meanwhile deals with the opposition left and gives cover as she can to the ground operation group."

"Phase 4 involves the infiltration of the installation beyond Miharu's capabilities to help. The objectives of the armor team is to make their way down the complex and seize control of key assets such as the control center for the defense net of the base, the main computer core, the hangars and armories likely holding extra supplies for salvage and mid-mission reloading, the securing of the YSS Sekkou and making sure it is operable, and freeing the Sekkou's crew if they are captives. The complex's database are of particular interest to us, as they might contain more information than was found back when we captured the Meng Po."

"Meanwhile, Miharu will set probes in the vicinity to remain good communications with the Hoshi and good situational awareness of the system before moving to the system's gas giant, which has a very dense ring of asteroids - most of them composed of ice. The excess torpedoes we have will be seeded around the areas like mines and Miharu will go into silent running."

"Phase 5 involves mostly Miharu waiting on the ground assault team to complete its mission, while needing to oppose any incoming Daughter of Eve vessels. Miharu will emerge from stealth, attack using AS-7 Anti-Matter torpedoes before a Anti-FTL field can be raised or scans by the enemy be done. Our probes will begin doing ECM jamming to keep the going ons on the planet hidden so that the main hull is the only opponent they can easily see. After making one attack run, Miharu is to retreat to the gas giant under the pretense of using the asteroid field for cover against weapon's fire and using the planet to gravity whip around it and so make a premature use of our fold drive to escape."

"Any priming of the fold drive, as well as use of FTL torpedoes, is likely to prompt the use of an Anti-FTL field, thus slowing us down and having the superior number of ships we are arrayed against to pursue and hunt us down. We will proceed to the asteroid ring and navigate through it, using it as cover. Once an acceptable number of enemies joins up with in in such a chase, we will use subspace detonator warheads to disable their combined field system and the dense ring of icy rocks should do the rest of the job in stopping them cold."

"Phase 6 involves using the teleporting Mindy to infiltrate the opposing vessels while the subspace detonator warheads are in effect - the chosen locations would be the engineering for Sakura gunships and the monitor room for the Nozomi scouts. Upon arrival, the infiltrators will destroy the vital systems nearby, be it sensor, generator or computer systems."

"Miharu will use transphasic torpedoes to destroy the weapon pods and released power armors from the opposing ships and then grab as many of them as possible to drag them down into the gas giant's gravity well. Having their computer or engine components damaged will render them virtually helpless - sufficiently so to have the gas giant's gravity well destroy them for us. The infiltrators will have little more than a minute to escape the disabled ships - so they will either need to wait for their teleporters to recharge or cut their way out."

"Upon expenditure of their missile payload, the Mindy group is to teleport back to the Hoshi, rearm, reload and then act as Claymere-Taii deems fit - or any ranking officer if he is unavailable to direct them."

"Phase 7 involves Miharu drawing the enemy into the area where the mines have been set and releasing them unto the enemy. Depending on circumstances, Phase 7 might happen before Phase 6 if the opposing ships do not fall in our first trap. However, I expect to use the mines against a second wave of vessels, whom I plan to lead into the same asteroid ring. The rest is mostly ship-to-ship combat, though depending on the status of the Mindy team we may be able to pull off the same trick again. I see no use to waste firepower on our enemy when I can let a planet kill them for us."

"Phase 8 involves our withdrawal. Armor assets will need to return to their respective ships, Hoshi will have to rejoin with Miharu and we will have to pull out, hopefully with the Sekkou in tow. The sooner we can and the less ships we face, the better, and this makes Phase 8 have priority over Phase 6 and 7."

Kotori breathed out after her presentation and then asked: "Comments or questions?"

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Nyton assumed his thinking position for a moment as the mission sunk in. I'm going to be in command of the Hoshi section and ground mission. This is quite the development. Well, new rank, greater responsibility. Time to prove that smarmy personnel management commander just what a Nepleslian is capable of. he thought to himself before he began going over notes for the Armor team loadouts in his mind. The current Hoshi loadout only contained two C model Daisys and twelve B models. The Daisys could be split up into two decent sized squads, each with a C model for support. Ideally though he wanted two C models in each squad, which meant they would have to fabricate more Armors along with sprites. There would be a lot of preparation before this mission that would have to be overseen and in a very short span of time.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Tom's expression soured at the mention of the mission's details, and he bowed his head in fake concentration to hide this fact from the others.

The entire mission hinged on the belief that the base was being evacuated and salvaged. Well, what if it wasn't? What proof of that was there other than a hunch on the part of the Taisa? Maybe these Daughters of Eve were die hard believers of their cause. There were more than enough of those in his own nation...

And the details of the mission--not only going into the base with what amounted to a couple squadrons to face who knows what--but the fact the Miharu would be busy fighting off more than 5 ships while the Hoshi, if it were lucky to get into the atmosphere of Bowhordia itself before being shot up, would be engaging all manners of defenders gunning to destroy the ground team. ...almost suicidal...

He was going to address these concerns as professionally as possible. It was his duty to his own subordinates. Taking a moment to make his face blank, he raised his hand and began to speak.

"Taisa, you stated that it is your belief that the base is being evacuated. Do you have any information you can share which would have led us to this conclusion? What are our means of verifying this information upon arrival at Bowhordia without risk of detection, and, should our intelligence be proven wrong, to what extent do we have a means of modifying or aborting the mission without drawing the ire of the enemy ships?"

He cleared his throat.

"It sounds as if the timeframe for the proper execution of this mission will be very tight, given the phases and their details. Everything must go perfectly, and I have no doubt that we are more than capable of meeting this standard, but one point I would like clarified is the use of one of the enemy's 'plasma spheres' to provide our ships and crew with cover to launch. Forgive my lack of tactical knowledge regarding this subject, but how do we approach and enter said plasma spheres and maintain the advantage of surprise? Are there any chances that these 'plasma spheres' could be insufficient for our needs or not there? I ask this because it seems that our mission hinges on the successful use of these things."

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

"I am not unsympathetic to the cause of the Daughters of Eve, despite them being criminals," Kotori began answering Tom. "the basis for my hunch is simply that if I was one of them and in the situation they are now, it would be what I would do. If I am proven wrong... then a cautious stealthy entry into the Bowhordia star system should be able to confirm that. If no clever ploys are at our disposal to use, then brute force will be needed; but I fear that if the opposing forces notice a large number of hostile vessels coming in that they might destroy the base before we can capture it."

"As for a plasma sphere... it's the result of the destruction of a starship from having saturated it with directed energy weapon's fire. Plasma spheres cause a great deal of sensor interference which should serve as ideal cover from which Miharu can release its auxiliary ship and vehicles. Which such concealment, the ground assault group could be able to make it as far as atmospheric entry before our opponents even realize we've split up."

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

"So we are counting on a quick and decisive strike upon one of their ships," Tom said with a nod.

"What are our contingency plans?"

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Kotori tilted her head to the left thoughtfully before replying: "For the Obakemono's Ayame escort group, we could always use Phase 6's tactic of inserting teleporting power armors inside. However, the quick paced circumstances of that battle and our dealing with a large carrier and several small hulls makes me feel such an endeavor would be more a suicide mission than a surgical strike for the saboteurs... so, I'm not very keen on it."

"Alternatively, we could just have Miharu fight and destroy all the opponents close to the planet, making it free to give fire support when the ground operation group then transits down to the planet. The problem with that idea is that its going to take a significant amount of time to defeat all opponents in space, giving more time for the ground installation to prepare or react to an assault which obviously wiped out what guardians they had in space and leaving the armor team less time to accomplish its mission within the complex before enemy reinforcements arrive."

"Then, there's me scrapping this operation because things really didn't go as planned. If such happens, command of the operation will be transferred to Eikan Minato-Shôshô of the First Expeditionary Fleet. Parts of the strategic strike pool will be assigned to fighting the vessels present while we still attempt to make our ground operation - but it will be much less discreet and having many ships fold in-system will likely inspire alarm, enough to have them destroy their ground installation and then beat a hasty retreat. The Daughters of Eve will scatter and our odds of piecing together the purpose of Amaya's Gate will become very slim; especially if they go to ground afterwards and bide their time until our guard drops again."

"A large part of this operation actually depends on us encouraging them to think the situation is under control and that they don't have to stoop to drastic measures to protect their secrets," Kotori finally stated. "We have to beat them before they realize they are losing. Take the initiative, attack aggressively and only allow them to react."

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Sora listened to Kotori intently, and tried digest both the insanely spicy bisque and what her Taisa was telling them. Another mission on the ground in power armor against Eve? She suddenly felt ill, she was still suffering nightmares from the last time they faced Eve and this new mission made her queasy, but she knew that there was no life in today's Star Army without power armor missions and her being in one.

She took a large gulp of her water to wash the burning out of her mouth as she tried to figure out what specialties she would want to assign the sprites that would be assisting in the medical bays during these phases. It was also apparent to her that she was still severely lacking in her ability to perform in a combat situation in a power armor. Am I ready to do this again? I guess that's really moot, I will have to be ready for this all I can really do is try to train and ready myself through the battle sims... Sumaru can probably give me pointers on how to maximize my time.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Nyton just continued to plan things out as he listened to others voice their fears and concerns. True he had thought of such things but in the end all their strategizing and plans were just theory and conjecture. For all anyone knew, Eve had thousands of soldiers hiding in that base.

However it would be foolish to dismiss the fears that members of his crew were being possessed by. If their morale dropped they may as well already be beaten. There had to be something he could do to help them overcome these fears. Eve was certainly formidable but she was not invincible.

"Kotori-sama, while I believe you have thought through this situation as much as possible, in the end we are all really just guessing. Logical guesses based off of what data we have but these are not enough at times to make people comfortable with the approaching battle. Instead of trying to convince ourselves of the validity of your plan let us be assured as to just what it is that we are fighting for here. We cannot shy away from this fight so put that notion behind you. Regardless of what Eve's cause may be, those of us on this side have a lot to fight for. Be it loved ones, honor, duty, or your own life, the only way to survive this battle will be to fight it together as one." Nyton then said.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Tom turned to Nyton, keeping a neutral expression, although his eyes gleamed with emotion.

"With all due respect, Claymere-Taii, I do not disagree with the spirit of brotherhood and teamwork behind your words, but accepting the validity of the plan is essential to the morale of the crew, in my opinion. That's why I'm asking so many questions, because I want Miharu's crew to be assured that the best possible plan that takes into account as many X-factors as possible has been laid in front of them. We are asking a lot of them, as you have stated, and we owe it to the crew to provide a comprehensive, reliable plan that maximizes our chances of mission success."

"We all know why we fight. There's no need to reiterate that. However, now's the time to know how we can best do that and come home in one piece."

He nodded respectfully to Kotori.

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

Kotori listened to Nyton and Tom both before finally giving a nod in understanding. "Is there anything else, then?"

Re: Mission 3: The sound of machina

"Yes, Taisa."

Yukari hoped she was not speaking out of turn, but there was simply a lot to consider.

"You have Miharu's skeleton crew fighting five to nine vessels by itself. The fighter and the shuttles are most likely limited to escort duty for the Hoshi, as it is not as capable offensively. Freeman-Juni's assessment is the necessary strategy for such odds, is it not? I believe we could, perhaps, use one anti-matter torpedo to our advantage after firing an area-of-effect subspace torpedo — if we fire that into the area of the Ketsuekis and older Yui-4s, we can maximize our first rounds. All we need do is drop our CFS before the subspace torpedo explodes, and bring it back up when the subspace-collapsing wave is past us."
